“ you look very pretty . ” posy ( @wcrriorhearts​ ) compliments her and it easy puts a smile on effie’s face     . . .     it surprises her to realize that it has been a long time since someone genuinely made her such a compliment. it has certainly been rarer in this district; everything is so dark and dull, it is so very depressing. as if it would be a crime to bring the people some joy. but this is a joyful event and as such she should deserve to wear something more appealing, right? and so she smiles at the girl, genuinely pleased to face such a kind soul.    “ thank you. my, you are quite a vision yourself. ”    although she looks vastly different, effie can see the unique beauty within the young girl. reaching out, she gently touches her hair.    “ however, a few braids would finish it up nicely. i could do it for you, if you’d like. ”    something simple, something subtle, oh, it would frame her face in the most lovely way.

❛  i can’t do this anymore.  ❜ katniss ( @unheald​ ) confesses, clearly overhwelmed and effie knows what she says could be helpful or making everything worse     . . .     she might not be in her skin, might not be experiencing what she does, but effie still likes to think she is empathetic enough to be able to imagine what she must feel like. some days, and she wouldn’t ever say it out loud, she feels the same. each year, when their tributes had quickly died during the games, effie would think that this is it. let someone else take over. and a part of her hate herself for thinking this now because how dare she compare their feelings like that? it just feels wrong. shaking her head, effie moves to sit beside her, turning her body towards the young woman to give her her full attention. 

and she offers a smile, geuine but it comes as quickly as the once she forced would. can she tell that it is honest, though?    “ oh, katniss ... i know, it may seem impossible now, but you are the strongest person i know. ”    one of them, surely. a hand reaches out to brush a strand of dark hair behind the other’s ear before cupping her face.    “ you are not alone in this. we have your back. all i need you to do is trust me. ”    and that is the point, isn’t it? effie is afraid that it is the one thing the girl cannot do and to be quite frank, she couldn’t blame her. hasn’t she been the cause of all the pain she has experienced lately? so many thing shappened because of her and if she wished she could do something about it. if only she could change the past.    “ we are a team. ”

❛  we’re screwed. ❜   haymitch ( @murkyhazed ) proclaims as pessimistic as always and effie only rolls her eyes . . .

most of the time, he is just a voice in the background. oh, she is absolutely hyperaware of him, but she knows better than to listen to him when it comes to the hunger games. he’s never been optimistic about their tributes, never remained sober enough to even attempt to help them come up with a plan.    “ you keep saying that every year. ”    she doesn’t look up from the papers she’s looking at, taking a few notes.    “ don’t you ever have something new to say? ”    leaving her signature at the bottom of the last paper, effie neatly puts them away and turns towards her partner. face remaining neutral, she takes in his appearance. of course she has not been expecting to see something other than his disheveld self. haymitch is not the most unpleasant company. she can admit that his comments about fellow capitol citizens (especially about some of her fellow escorts) are often rather amusing but that is probably as far as she would go.

“ we’ve never had a volunteer before. don’t you think the girl might be an actual chance to have a victor this year? at least try to acknowledge that she might have a chance. ”

there is a pang in her chest, guilt, knowing she has done so many bad things that she couldn’t possibly make up for all of them. it is because of her that this young man’s life has been put at risk. it is because of her that many children had to fight for their lives without ever having a chance. logically, she knows that if it hadn’t been her it would have been someone else. she has always been replacable. but it doesn’t ease the guilt. just knowing she tried to make their time as pleasant as possible ( even when she failed to do so ) is a minor comfort for her. how could he not hate her?

her mind is running and screaming but effie puts on the smile as she always would; only that it is genuine whenever she is around peeta. the boy is too good.    “ oh, thank you, peeta. you have given me so much. ”    more than she could ever put into words, more than he could probably understand. her team made her feel like she had a family, they still do.    “ i wish i could have done more. i wish ... ”    her voice breaks. what is the point of thinking about any what if’s? what’s done is done and she cannot change a thing about it.    “ you deserve the world, peeta. ”
