Magician!Adachi starter for @obeysword

Inaba was a weird town. Adachi already didn’t like it much, but maybe that was his pessimism talking.

It was rainy and foggy all the damn time, for one. And this was the tiny kinda little backwoods town where everyone knew everyone, and someone was always up in your business. A far cry from Tokyo, where Adachi had liked that he’d been given a choice when to be noticed and what to be noticed for.

No one in Inaba was looking for him as an actor right about now, that was for sure. Most he’d done so far was a few magic tricks on the street for a couple extra bucks. That, and a pickpocketing or two that the cops hadn’t noticed.

He’d moved because of the cheap rent, but new people always got stares - maybe they’re looking to outsiders for suspects in that freaky murder case. Adachi didn’t care much, but the cheap rent didn’t mean he could go without a job, and that’s what leads him here, by the elevator in Junes, apron tied around his waist and milking a few seconds of freedom from the tedium before his manager finally caught him and sent him back to buttering up costumers.

Always the observant type, he’d begun to recognize the faces of the regulars, but there was a new kid giving him this weird look that Adachi didn’t like. He couldn’t give less of a shit about the high school kids, but he recognized the ones that worked there, and this wasn’t one of them. Surely this kid couldn’t have recognized him - the plays and bit parts he’d done back in the city didn’t garner much attention at all. It strikes him that maybe he’s staring at his face for some reason? He just remembered that he’d forgotten to take out his earring before work. Maybe it was that and he’d get reported to the manager. Yay.

Well, he had to deliver the authentic Junes experience. Catching the confused look on his face, Adachi instead gives a smile, though he doesn’t care enough to make it too happy, as his brows are still furrowed in confusion.

“Hey there. Rainy today, huh?” Here’s hoping some conversation would make the kid stop burning a hole in his head with this staring thing. “Uh... can I help you with something, kid?”

“...Yeah, I don’t think Narukami-kun’s coming.”

Adachi leaned back in his chair, tipping back on two legs, the cheap plastic groaning in protest. With Amagi-san gone for some reason - somehow, the Magician really didn’t feel like asking - and Narukami-kun a no show, it was just him, Satonaka-san, and the Fox, which was eyeing the order of takoyaki he’d bought with a keen eye. He sighs and takes the one he was about to eat and offers it to the Fox instead, who greedily gulps it down, before grabbing another for himself and then sliding the food over in the Emperor’s direction for her to take one.

“What a prick move, can’t even be assed to tell us if he’s swinging by. I guess we could train while we’re here... I’d like some extra cash just in case my landlord springs another surprise rent hike on me.”

He glances over at the punk girl. She could be wary of the shadow world still, just by what had happened to her and Amagi-san, but it’d be good for her to get some experience in, with how batshit powerful the shadows were. Prone to speaking without thinking, Adachi decides to blurt out something he’d been thinking.

“You’re not wearing makeup. And you’ve got that little smiley pin.” He gestures towards it as he takes a bite of his food. It wasn’t hard to spot, being the only splash of color on her wardrobe. “Now I know my opinion doesn’t matter in the slightest, but... looks like you feel more comfy like that than before. Might be a shadow thing, I kinda had the same vibes about me after mine. But what do I fuckin’ know?”

(For magician!Adachi) Somehow, more had happened during the course of this year than it had during his other life's. Never would Yu have expected to be making Adachi of all people a birthday cake. But here he was, lighting the candles and the sparklers spraying off their golden glow. They illuminated the orange fox decorated on the cake's surface. "If you don't like it, I'll force it down your throat." The smile on his face was sickeningly sweet. "Happy birthday!"

Adachi's Birthday - Accepting!

Some things hadn't changed over the course of the crazy-ass year he'd spent in the tiny backwater town of Inaba. The town was still somehow both weird and boring. And Adachi still has the feeling that Narukami Yu is going to kill him someday.

Granted, they were a hell of a lot closer now, now that the Magician actually understood why the kid had held such an animosity for him from when they'd met to the time that Adachi had slapped him for being a prick all the time. And he had to admit, Narukami-kun's more of a saint than he would be. Adachi didn't think he'd ever be able to forgive even a different version of a murderer who tried to kill Nanako-chan.

But the fact that their bond had become strong as iron didn't mean that Adachi didn't still have the ability to annoy the kid whenever possible... nor did it make the kid any less weird.

Still, the birthday cake... was a really nice thing to do. It was homemade, too, decorated just for him. Why else would there be a fox there? He could already feel Chironnupu's burst of pride at seeing Adachi's birthday symbolize that aspect of himself.

He hadn't realized he'd just been staring at the cake, not saying anything, until Yu made the poisioned-sugar comment about shoving the cake down his throat if he didn't like it, and he snapped back to attention.

"Chill, alright? I'm just looking! This is my first birthday cake, give me a little bit to savor the moment!

...Still. You're an absolute oddball, Hero, but... thanks. Means a lot."
