“Your fix it powers,” Buck explains. “Eddie obviously believes in those. He’s seen them. He’ll come around to this, too.”

“I’m not a mutant,” Maisy says. “I think I come from a family of witches? It’s unclear. I had limited capacity to investigate. No vehicle.”

A witch? Eddie and Chris were right. Damn. 

“Ah,” Buck responds neutrally. 

“Did you really think mutant?” Maisy asks. “Like, my whole life, were you waiting for Magneto to come recruit me?”

“Oh, that’d be sick,” Buck says. “Not even Professor X? You’re jumping right to Magneto. I like that.”

She smiles. It’s a small smile, but present nonetheless. Buck feels a wash of relief. 

“We’ll get Eddie to believe,” Buck says. “I know we will.”

“Okay,” she mumbles. 

“Uh,” Buck says. “Before we get there, is there anything you need to tell me?”

She looks at him, eyes suspicious. He doesn’t want to put her on the spot, but now might be a good time to tell him that he’s dead. Or will be dead. Or might have died. Because he knows what Eddie dreamed. He knows Eddie has dreamed a lot of bad things, some of which he won’t even tell Buck. If Eddie puts the pieces together, it might be nice to have some information. But it also might be really hard for her to talk about. He doesn’t want to push her. 

“I don’t have any lottery numbers for you if that’s what you’re asking,” Maisy says eventually.

They both know he’s not.
