To the person looking for Nina & Kaz posts:

I think partly why Nina respects and values Kaz so much is because of how Zoya treated her. I’m rereading the duology now, and most of Nina’s memories of Zoya are very negative. Zoya calls her names and treats her badly, even when Nina is doing her job well.

Kaz is the opposite. While he doesn’t agree with certain things Nina stands for or suggests, he never demeans her. Kaz lets Nina know that she’s doing her job well and trusts her as a source of information.

I think seeing how Nina’s confidence shifts depending on who she’s with is so interesting this time around. It’s also a bit sad to see. We love Nina because of how confident she is, and she shows us this in how she interacts with the Crows. She isn’t afraid of Kaz and trusts him with information, plans, and to be fair. Then, compare that to how Nina acts in Zoya’s company? There is a part in Crooked Kingdom where Nina shrinks back and Matthias has to remind her to not let Zoya bully her. It’s sad and jarring to see Nina’s confidence torn to shreds.

So yeah, I love the dynamic between Nina and Kaz. There is an earned mutual respect between the both of them, that boosts Nina’s confidence rather than diminishing it.
