I feel like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Ethel Cain are three versions of Vintage Americana. Lana is the old Hollywood actress version, moody and romantic and nostalgic for a bygone era, a golden age. Taylor is the pop, sugary sweet version, the wholesome girl next door who everyone loves. Ethel is the darker version, the Preacher's daughter in the American Bible belt, tragic and hauntingly southern gothic.

This also made me think about Cool Britannia and how masculine or at the very least androgynous it is in comparison to Vintage Americana and I think that's because it was mostly spearheaded by boy bands who sang about the working class experience. It was very rebellious, cocky and well, cool. But Vintage Americana is dominated by a more feminine perspective of American life, and it is sweeter and sad, and sensitive.
