Men jaja. I verden.
WHAT WHAT WHAT?
Oh my GAWD.
WHAT THE FUCK.
Wow wow wow.
16! OG JEG TROEDE AT DET VAR OVER 1000!!!?? HOW HOW HOW.
No no no. Stenen har mig ikke en skid.

born as the youngest to dominic danbury and his late wife harriet danbury, augusta was named after the late queen consort augusta. during childbirth and a extrmely harsh labor, augusta's mother lost her life due to an infection from childbirth, that left her bedridden. in a matter of days, the countess harriet danbury was dead due to a fatal infection. thus, this meant that augusta was the last of her mother's children and grew up with the love of her mother. however, her grandmother helped her son raise her grandchild to become a proper member of society.
ACT II: GROWING WITH WINGS
for what seems like a century, augusta was taught the basic of what it meant to be a "proper woman" — although she felt anything but. their governess taught her how to write, read, embroider cushions, play the piano forte (decently), and a bit of history. yet, what augusta felt most passionate about weren't any of this. instead loving the thought reading a science book and learning about the stars. a taboo subject — by far, that her father scolded her about on multiple occasions. sometimes augusta would find herself sneaking away on horseback late at night to get a glimpse of the stars in the sky. in their eyes, stars were a place that she could take her away from all her pain and suffering. a place instead of not being seen as just a maternal match for someone; a place they could be herself.
ACT III: A BLOSSOMING FLOWER
once augusta hit the age of womanhood, there was no going back for them. instead, she is preparing herself for her first season in hopes of finding herself a partner. the hopes of finding the youngest a danbury a match is all thanks to their status and names upheld. (however, augusta wishes nothing more to not mind a match but will bite her tongue for the sake of her family). only time will tell.
vi. wanted connections

family friends
frenemies
#bridgertonrpsintro#death mention tw#parental loss tw#for context i am following some of the plot lines from both the queen charlotte's series

Taurus at the Speed of Sound ~ May Monthly Horoscope
by Eric Francis
Dear Friend and Reader:
Earlier this week, we experienced the first of seven Sun-Uranus conjunctions in Taurus (that was Monday, April 22). News events are moving at a dizzying pace, and defy comprehension. At the time I’m writing this article on April 25, it’s been just over a week since the Notre Dame Cathedral fire, and a week since the release of the redacted version of the Special Counsel’s report. It seems more like a month.
As of this writing, there are now 20 Democratic presidential candidates, with Joe Biden’s entry into the race. Also today, Russia’s president Vladimir Putin met Kim Jong-un, the Korean leader, for a summit meeting in China. Putin is moving in on a power vacuum abandoned by Trump’s failed attempts at courting diplomacy with Kim.
Texas executed John William King for the 1998 killing of James Byrd, the first time in modern Texas history that a Caucasian man was executed for the death of an African American man. This was the infamous dragging death by a white supremacist.
Pres. Trump denied that he ordered then-White House Counsel Dan McGahn to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller III. He said that McGahn had lied to the Special Counsel about this during the investigation.
McGahn, one of the star witnesses in the Special counsel’s investigation, has been subpoenaed to testify before Congress, but Trump brought a personal lawsuit to block his testimony. The president also vowed to fight any subpoena of documents or testimony by congressional oversight committees, in effect daring the House of Representatives to impeach him.
On that note, if he is impeached, Trump said he would fight it at the U.S. Supreme Court. He is clearly referencing his impression that he would get a 5-4 win on any case he brings, but there is no such course of action provided for under the Constitution. (What actually happens during an impeachment is that the chief justice presides over the trial, with the Senate serving as the jury.)
Contents of the report of the Special Counsel, 448 pages long, are gradually percolating through the news. The report details the astonishing extent of Russian meddling in the election, which came in the form of a social media propaganda campaign dating to 2014, and hack and dump operations of email and confidential documents stolen from formal Democratic Party offices and Hillary Clinton’s personal office.
Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, this week falsely summed up the operation Wednesday as consisting of “a couple of Facebook ads.”
On the Personal Side of the Equation
We live in a restless time. I keep reading articles about the impact of lack of sleep and sleep hygiene. Part of this impact is coming from being inundated by radio waves, which are invisible light waves; these burn melatonin. So too does exposure to blue light, which is a fact of looking into screens all day.
But there is something more, a sense of agitation, nervousness and fear, as if we’re heading toward an edge that we cannot see.
Despite all the discussion about global warming and climate change, collectively our societies are doing very little about it. Economic success is still measured in growth — corporate profits and the value of the stock market. Many people are struggling — really struggling — to make ends meet as everything gets more and more expensive.
Economic woes are always an issue; we hear about them in good times and bad. But we are living in the New Gilded Age, when there are more billionaires than ever before. Money is energy, and much of it is stagnant at the moment, as companies and individuals hang onto huge cash reserves. There is fear of loss and little imagination about what to do with vast sums of wealth that exist.
As I’ve written many times, my studied impression is that the internet is what is driving consciousness: the sensation of what it feels like to be alive right now. Inundation by internet is the primary factor behind the social crisis, the anxiety epidemic, the sexless relationships, and a general state of psychic chaos.
Reader Responses: Uranus in Taurus
I recently asked my readers how they were responding to Uranus in Taurus. Here is a sample of the responses:
“It’s quite an upheaval. My trust in God has increased and at times is still quite tested. Due to a lingering concussion that hasn’t healed I haven’t worked for several weeks. I am far out on a limb in completely new territory. I have a sense that I am learning many things that I’ve needed to learn for a while. I am also in brand new territory that’s missing some of the old markers.”
lived at ages 4-6, (big stir), all the moving from home to home before I was in 5th grade… my inner sense of personal sovereignty and authority has had its challenges as I feel that speaking in honesty and truth can fucking stir lots of pots. It seems to put people I care for in uncomfortable wonder about my authenticity in relationship to them, cause I’m challenging them.”
“Quite a lot has shifted for me but the one that really stands out is as a 57 year old man who is pretty conservative in physical expression and exercise, I started going to a weekly free form dance and have progressed from slow soulful movement to full on dance machine!”
“Everything about personal awakening resonates, though that started about 3 years ago. Building on that theme now, Uranus seems to be about burning through convention to see what remains, like the alchemical calcination phase, and using what’s left to (re)build something new. This is showing up in my career, which is being guided towards creating a new, spiritually-based business model from what survives the fire.”
“On the 15th my shelf of greenware fell over and every piece broke. My shelf of essential oils came out of the wall; luckily only one bottle broke. I found myself reading about broken vessels, specifically oil bottles and the shards with drops of oil representing light and the connection to everything. But the break through this week, and I think that is what Uranus in Taurus is offering, is that these material things do not matter except for what they represent. Throwing pots is a meditation for me. It is the process that is important, not the creation of the material, but the creation of the spiritual body. Part of my path, it seems, is renunciation or detachment to the material plane. Creation of the spiritual body is most important. I also learned that you cannot have a loving connection to others without a loving connection with God/creator.”
Beltane New Moon Coming May 4
The Beltane New Moon on May 4 is an intriguing chart. I’ll have more to say about it in Monday morning’s edition, and in the upcoming Planet Waves FM (where I will continue my coverage of the Special Counsel’s report, and ignoring the presidential race). The horoscope below is based on the Beltane chart — shown in the graphic below.
With love, Eriv

recipe for turnabout liveblog
so right off the bat i'm seeing in my walkthrough that maggey byrde is the defendant. oh great. i have nothing against her character but i hate that she and gumshoe are hinted to be romantically involved or at least share feelings for one another. gumshoe is a gay man and i feel very strongly about this
phoenix wright impersonator??
the second man (the killer or whatever) looks suspiciously like phoenix in silhouette. if hes not an evil twin then who is he?
oh great the gay stereotype guy. i really don't know much about gay stereotypes in japan but this is certainly a different breed of homophobic stereotype than the american flavor
why can't we just use the magatama maya always wears? or is only the one pearl gave us magic?
not only is gumshoe definitely gay (its my headcanon which means its correct), but he's significantly older than maggie! (32 and 23 is a big experience and maturity gap) gross! i hate this ship even more! fuck the phoenix wright writer people for this one!
glen elg's name is a palindrome. not sure if that's significant or just for fun
orange is so not maya's color
what's in the bottle? poison, perhaps? the plot thickens
so this is our odd phoenix impersonator. how is he...orange? i like his pink scooter though
this old guy probably keeps coming back to the restaurant because he's a perv. i don't like this guy. also, those dresses really aren't showing much of anything. imagine being scandalized by that
what idiot lent armstrong half a million? i don't think that was a very good financial decision
phoenix! i know you need kudo to talk, but dont bring maya out just so he can be creepy about waitress uniforms! gross!
i am begging the people who make these games to stop sexualizing mia so much. i know i know boobs or whatever and yes she is hot im bi and have eyes but cmon
i feel a little bad for armstrong but he did steal from people and did have what might be a poison bottle in his kitchen so the jurys out on this guy
fr how did they think that guy was phoenix
have we ever had to choose NOT to press harder on a statement in these games? lol
WHY DIDNT GUMSHOE TELL US ANY OF THIS INFORMATION
i know you're not necessarily rational when your life in on the line in court, but why is maggey mad at gumshoe? he is legally obligated to present the evidence
victor kudo's nose is starting to disturb me...it looks like some kind of boil...are u okay sir
kudo and the judge cant be that far apart in age. why is kudo more of a boomer
i think that phoenix could pull off that waitress uniform for sure
i just realized kudo is wearing a sleeveless top which is sort of funny to me. the weird thing though is why does it have the hiragana for nu on it?
well that was a weird day at trial. still dont see how this changes the amount of evidence against maggey. sure kudo is unreliable, but we havent even established the presence of the second person yet
that girl is scary
the mob?? well that took an interesting turn
i know medical care is ridiculously expensive, but are there really million dollar procedures? maybe im being naive, though
i feel a bit bad for viola. she can't help the family environment she was born into, and its depressing that she really wanted to believe that tigre saved her because he cared about her. i'm guessing shes an accomplice in the poisoning, but tigre planned the whole thing
this is a very complicated murder plan, but it is ace attorney, after all. what would an ace attorney case be without like 50 logistically insane twists?
adhd gumshoe rights?
oh shit its all coming together
WHY DID ANYONE THINK THAT THIS GUY WAS PHOENIX
GUMSHOE'S HERE
why was there a random blackout. also cool that godot's mask glows. im still not a huge fan of his character though
i think maggey is being a jerk to gumshoe but maybe im just hetphobic if the writers were real ones shed be gay
anyway that was a wild case. i had fun but still i dont think its one of my favorites. i wonder what happened to violetta she was my favorite character from this case i think
aaaand finally we're done with the filler cases (i like the filler cases don't get me wrong, but i really just miss edgeworth and i assume he'll return in case 4 or 5)

1963
The biggest news from 1963 was the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy on November 22, which thrust Lyndon B. Johnson into the role of president. The assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was murdered two days later by nightclub owner Jack Ruby. This was a difficult time to become president, with the mounting troubles in Vietnam where the Viet Cong Guerrillas had now killed 80 American advisers. The continued campaign for civil rights by the black community caused violent reactions from whites in places such as Mississippi, Virginia, and Alabama, where the black civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested. Films included The Birds and The Great Escape, and popular TV programs The Virginian and Lassie. Women’s fashion and hairstyles included fur boots and towering hairdos for evening wear. In music, it was the beginning of Beatlemania, after the release of Meet the Beatles.
Major events
• U.S. President John F. Kennedy is assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas.
• The Beatles release the single “I Want To Hold Your Hand/I Saw Her Standing There” and the album Meet the Beatles, which marks the beginning of Beatlemania.

Music Landmarks Tour: Bars and Hotels
The Rainbow Bar and Grill
The Sunset Strip has always been well known for its connection to the music world. Many of the bars and clubs located on that street have a place in the history of rock ‘n’ roll, and none was bigger than the Rainbow Bar and Grill. The bar was founded in 1972 by Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and others. This quickly became a place for celebrities to hang out at as evidenced by the fact on it’s opening night a party was held there for Elton John. John Belushi would eat his last meal there. Before it was the Rainbow, this location was a restaurant owned by Judy Garland and Vincent Minelli. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe had their first date there. The bar soon became the number one spot on the strip for rock and roll celebrities including Keith Moon, Harry Nelson, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, Mickey Dolenz, Keith Moon, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and many more. Motorhead front man Lemmey Klimster practically lived there sitting at the end of the bar playing the video poker machine. The bar would also change its regulars as the music changed. Members of Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue, WASP, Poison all became frequent customers at the Rainbow in the 1980’s. Guns N’ Roses would go on to mention the bar in the songs “Estranged,” “November Rain,” and “Don’t Cry.” The place was filled with groupies for all of these bands. A number of the waitresses would end up being groupies also. The rock band Rainbow was actually named after the bar. I have drank in this place. The sense that I got as we stood in this room was that I was being stared at by this huge biker. People were trying to figure out whether I was a nobody or somebody.
The Green Mill
The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge located in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago first opened in 1907. Its original name was Pop Morse’s Roadhouse, but was changed to the Green Mill Gardens in 1910. The name was a reference to Moulin Rouge in Paris. During the days of Prohibition, Machine Gun Jack McGurn became part owner of the establishment. He was a member of Al Capone’s outfit organization. Performer Joe E. Lewis would later refuse to perform at the Green Mill, which led to his brutal death having his throat slashed. This would be later dramatized in the film, The Jokers Wild. Al Capone had a favorite seat in the bar, which still exists to this day offering views of both the front and back entrance. Underneath the bar, there was also an escape hatch, which led to a tunnel that came out to another building nearby. As time went on, the Green Mill hosted quite a few jazz icons of the day including Billie Holiday. The bar also became home to one of the country’s first poetry slams, which was held for the most part on Sunday nights. The bar has been featured in numerous films mostly in the 1990’s including VI Warshawsky and Prelude to a Kiss. The reason for placing a jazz club in this list is personal. The Green Mill was always the place to go after any concert at the Aragon or the Riviera on a weekend. There would always be a long line waiting to get in there after the show. Most of the time, I would not even wait in line, but instead head over to the Uptown Lounge. The Green Mill was usually too packed to warrant spending any time there.
Memory Motel
In 1976, the Rolling Stones released a song entitled “Memory Motel” on the album, Black and Blue. The song was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Jagger wrote the lyrics in 1975 while staying at Andy Warhol’s house in Montauk, New York (Long Island). The motel is an actual one located there as well. The history of Mick Jagger and this motel was very brief. He only visited the bar at the motel once. A husband and wife, who owned the bar, did not really like him that much. Rumor has it that all the members of the Rolling Stones did not particularly like the motel either, but they only liked the name of the motel. Jagger found it to be quite poetic. Anyone can stay there as it still exists as an inexpensive, mom and pop motel. If you do not wish to stay there, you can still visit the same bar that Jagger drank at back in 1975. If you look at pictures of the motel, except for this connection to the Rolling Stones, I could see very little reason to attract people to stay there.
Joshua Tree Inn
If you enjoy slightly more morbid rock and roll history, you could stay at the Joshua Tree Inn in San Bernardino County, California near Joshua Tree National Park. This is the hole in the wall motel where country rock legend Gram Parsons died in 1973. Who you may ask? He was a member of the Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the founder of American Cosmic Music. The latter was a hybrid music style combining country, r and b, rock, and folk. The Rolling Stones started to dabble in country on the album, Exile on Main Street primarily because they had met Graham Parsons. He died in Room 8 in an avalanche of drugs and alcohol. Anyone can stay in the room where he met his end. You can also stay in the Donovan Suite, which was the famous singer’s room of choice when he stayed there with his wife. In the 1970’s, he had decided to basically quit music altogether and moved to the Joshua Tree area to raise his family. The National Park is a good spot anyway because many musicians have found inspiration there including John Lennon, Keith Richards, Jim Morrison, and U2.
Continental Hyatt House
The Continental Hyatt House is a hotel located on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. If you remember the film Almost Famous, the character William Miller and Penny Lane go there to meet with Stillwater. The hotel has received the nickname over the years as the Riot House because of the outrageous behavior from many musicians over the years. The hotel was first opened in 1963 by Gene Autry, but three years later it was sold to Hyatt, which changed the name to the Continental Hyatt House. One of the primary attractions of the hotel was its close proximity to clubs on the Sunset Strip like the Whiskey A Gogo. Currently, the hotel is called the Andaz West Hollywood, but it is still owned by Hyatt. Led Zeppelin would often rent as many as six floors in the 1970’s when they stayed there. Legend has it that John Bonham would drive his motorcycle up and down the hallways. Truth be told, this was probably manager Richard Cole. In 1972, Keith Richards threw a television out the window in Room 1015. Keith Moon would later do the same thing from his room. Slipknot lead singer Corey Taylor attempted suicide here in 2003. The late Little Richard actually lived at the hotel for most of the 1980’s and 1990’s. Jim Morrison was living there for a time, but he was evicted after being found hanging outside his window. One change that has been made with the recent renovations is there are no longer any balconies to throw televisions over. The balconies have been changed to glass enclosed sunrooms.

Er tilstede forrest i min hjerne. Lige bag mine øjne. I mine hænder. Langs mine skuldre.

Sen. Hawley Calls For Federal Civil Rights Probe Over McCloskey Investigation
Missouri GOP Sen. Josh Hawley has called upon Attorney General Bill Barr to launch a federal civil rights investigation of the St. Louis couple who wielded guns outside of their house during a protest in their gated community. I have previously written about the possible charges against Mark and Patricia McCloskey and expressed my skepticism over the apparent effort of St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner to find a criminal charge. However, Attorney General Barr should decline this request from Sen. Hawley. There is no civil rights violation in this investigation. Indeed, while I thought the charges could be defeated in trial or on appeal, I previously wrote that the vague criminal provisions could be used to bring a charge. The issue turns on how the guns were used. While I find the criminal provisions to be vague and the application in this case to be unwarranted, it is not a civil rights violation to advance such an interpretation of the law.
Hawley maintains that Garnder is violating the Second Amendment by “targeting” the couple: “This is an unacceptable abuse of power and threat to the Second Amendment and I urge you to consider a federal civil rights investigation into the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office to determine whether this investigation and impending prosecution violates this family’s constitutional rights.”
We previously discussed how Missouri law has countervailing laws that support the McCloskeys like the Castle Doctrine laws. Hawley insists that these law as so clear and controlling that they make the motivations of the District Attorney equally clear:
“There is no question under Missouri law that the McCloskeys had the right to own and use their firearms to protect themselves from threatened violence, and that any criminal prosecution for these actions is legally unsound. The only possible motivation for the investigation, then, is a politically motivated attempt to punish this family for exercising their Second Amendment rights.”
Again, I have been critical of the basis for the proposed charges against the McCloskeys but these are broad countervailing statutes that are routinely subject to expansive interpretations by both prosecutors and defense attorneys. The question is whether, if a court agreed that the couple was threatening people on the street, there could be a legitimate charge. The answer is yes. That does not make it a legitimate case in the absence of such evidence and the underlying statutes have vague elements that could allow for challenges. However, that type of interpretative disagreement is not ordinarily the basis for civil rights charges.
The Justice Department clearly has the authority to investigate the violation of constitutional rights, but the specific basis for such an investigation is not clearly stated in the letter below.
The Second Amendment could be claimed as falling with the the Justice Department’s guidelines for the reporting of violations “based on … race, color, national origin, disability status, sex, religion, familial status, or loss of other constitutional rights.” Some investigations of state prisons or offices generally involve constitutional violations though often with a gender or race discrimination element. The Justice Department recently moved to protect free speech rights on campuses.
However, it is not stated as the focus of common references to “civil rights investigations” as illustrated in the Civil Division’s statement that it “enforces federal statutes prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, disability, religion, familial status and national origin.” It is also not included in Title VI’s prohibition of discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin by recipients of Federal financial assistance or the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, as amended (Crime Control Act).
Here is how the FBI defines the scope of its mandate:
“The FBI investigates violations of federal civil rights statutes and supports the investigations of state and local authorities in certain cases. Federal civil rights violations fall into several categories: hate crimes motivated by bias against such characteristics as race, religion, national origin, and sexual orientation; color of law crimes involving law enforcement and related criminal justice professionals’ misuse of their right to discretion, such as use of excessive force or police misconduct; involuntary servitude or slavery; violations of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act; the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act; the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act; and violations of human trafficking statutes included as part or the Trafficking Victims Protection Rights Act. The FBI’s civil rights investigations are separate from Equal Employment Opportunity Commission investigations, although EEOC regulations are enforced within the agency.”
Putting aside the specific office and basis for the investigation, I simply do not believe that this would make for a compelling foundation for such an investigation. Indeed, much of the criticism of Gardner is that she is acting for a base political purpose. That is a common complaint against elected prosecutors. Yet, the Justice Department has been a long defender of “prosecutorial discretion” on the use of the laws. The point is that these laws do not clearly bar such charges, even if the motivation and foundation are legitimately questioned. We would not want the Justice Department investigating every case where a prosecutor took an excessively broad interpretation of a statute absent a pattern of targeting constitutional rights. The Supreme Court has allowed for “reasonable” limitations on the right to bear arms. It is still working through the scope of such reasonable limits. It is unlikely to reject the basis for a criminal law that bars the threatening use of lawful arms in public. That leaves an interpretative or “as applied” controversy in cases like this one. Finally, the St. Louis case is currently at the investigative stage so any move at this time would be likely viewed as a premature.
————
Here is the Hawley letter to Barr:
Dear Attorney General Barr:
As you are well aware, the country is facing a moment of significant public unrest and discord. As many Americans are peacefully exercising their constitutional rights to free speech and protest throughout the country, still others are exploiting this moment as an opportunity to sow violence and destruction. Too often, peaceful demonstrations have devolved into tense standoffs or violent riots, with threats and attacks on businesses, innocent bystanders, and law enforcement officers.
One such incident occurred in St. Louis, Missouri, where a family reportedly faced a mass of demonstrators trespassing on their property and threatening them. When help from the police or from nearby security failed to arrive, this family, the McCloskeys, did what any reasonable person would do: they retrieved their lawfully owned firearms and defended their property and their lives. The confrontation was resolved with no one being hurt.
Unfortunately, this family is facing new threats, not from demonstrators but from the local government. St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner is now threatening to prosecute not the trespassers, but the McCloskeys, and she is using the powers of her office to target them. Her office has seized their firearms, and police have applied for warrants in the case, with an indictment believed to be imminent.1
This is an unacceptable abuse of power and threat to the Second Amendment, and I urge you to consider a federal civil rights investigation into the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office to determine whether this investigation and impending prosecution violates this family’s constitutional rights. There is no question under Missouri law that the McCloskeys had the right to own and use their firearms to protect themselves from threatened violence, and that any criminal prosecution for these actions is legally unsound. The only possible motivation for the investigation, then, is a politically motivated attempt to punish this family for exercising their Second Amendment rights. Indeed, this is part of a troubling pattern of politically motivated prosecutorial decisions by the St. Louis Circuit Attorney, who has not seen fit to prosecute many violent offenders, 2 and who has expressed hostility to gun rights in the past. 3 Recently, reports indicate that she declined to pursue charges against dozens of individuals arrested during a weekend of riots in the city.4
The Second Amendment is not a second-class right. No family should face the threat of harassment or malicious prosecution for exercising that right. The Department of Justice must ensure that all Americans’ rights are protected from this kind of abuse of power. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Josh Hawley U.S. Senator

Investering i langvarig pleje, del II
Over 65% af alle amerikanere vil have brug for en slags LTC i deres levetid 3. ULEMPER: 1. For dyrt 2. Krymp mit budget 3. Ingen Retur af Premium 4. Ingen langfristet garanti Fordele: 1.

Ozark season two is built on a lie, one the audience can see coming from a long way off.
It begins from the premise that Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) will split from the little Ozark resort town they moved to in season one once they’ve built the casino they promised to their various criminal partners. Said casino will help launder money for the Mexican cartel Marty works for, but it will also provide a slightly more legitimate business enterprise for a local crime family, the Snells, whose land will furnish a location for the casino and whose heroin trade might also provide a lucrative side enterprise for the cartel.
This complicated balancing act, with the Byrdes at its center, would seem to set up a second season all about Marty and Wendy trying to keep the casino on track while trying to keep the cartel from stomping on the Snells and the Snells from fucking everything up in a fit of pique. (Darlene Snell, played by Lisa Emery, doesn’t much like “Mexicans,” as she’s fond of pointing out, but she can come up with any number of reasons to stomp on the casino project, some of which she just pulls out of her ass in the moment.)
Yet season two of Ozark is mostly about the Byrdes trying to pretend they’re not characters in a TV show, as Marty and Wendy focus on their plan to split with their two kids for the Gold Coast of Australia once the casino is open, leaving behind whatever mess they’ve created. They give much less attention to their burgeoning criminal empire.
Leaving aside that the Byrdes are frequently the least interesting characters on their own show, perpetually trapped in moral dilemmas prompted by their life of crime (dilemmas you’d really think they would have seen coming had they watched any other crime drama ever made), the audience knows they won’t be leaving anytime soon.
The Byrdes are our point-of-view characters. The story is about their slow descent into outright criminality, juxtaposed with the way said descent changes their family, sometimes for the better (but often for the worse). If they leave the Ozarks, then there is no show.
This is a common thing for an antihero drama to try for a few episodes. The “what if I tried to escape?” story has driven arcs on just about any antihero drama you can think of, though rarely successfully. TV doesn’t handle the moment where the protagonist “refuses the call” well, because it tends to drag out that moment into long bouts of inaction. Thus, in season two of Ozark, the Byrdes are too often reactive protagonists, trying to clean up messes caused by others rather than making new messes of their own.
There are still enough good things going on that I could have written off Ozark season two as competent but ultimately not for me — but for one thing.
Watching any given frame of this series, which has earned Emmy nominations for directing and cinematography, is frequently like looking through a pool of dirty dishwater. So intent on being perceived as serious is Ozark that it never stops to shoot anything in a format other than “ultra-glum.”
Some spoilers follow, mostly in the images, which depict certain situations the characters get into.
Let me explain what I mean by starting with a shot that is, on its face, totally defensible.
Ruth talks to her dad in the Ozark season two premiere. Netflix
I call this image “defensible,” because it more or less makes sense why Ruth’s face would be half in shadow. The scene takes place in a car, in late afternoon, in a place without a lot of light sources other than the sun. If you’re following a naturalistic theory of lighting, you can more or less argue for why Ruth appears to be receding into darkness.
But I pull up this image to give you a rather dramatic example of Ozark’s primary method for lighting scenes featuring human beings. Regardless of where they are, regardless of how much light would be present, they’re always lit so that half of their face is in shadow. I spent season two trying to count times when characters weren’t lit this way, and I never got to 15, across 10 episodes where the shortest installment ran 55 minutes and several ran over an hour.
It’s not just Ruth (the teenage would-be kingpin played by Julia Garner, who was the best thing about season one and is frustratingly wasted in season two), either. It’s every character. They’re all constantly trapped between darkness and light, in a bit of not particularly subtle visual symbolism.
Wendy attends a very important meeting. Netflix Marty makes a choice. Netflix Mason reveals himself. Netflix
Now, again, I could sort of make an argument for any of the above images making sense from the point of view of “there probably would be low light levels in that situation,” especially if you accept that everybody in the Ozarks is turning off lights all of the time to save on their electric bill.
But it’s harder to make that argument for a shot that is set in a hospital room. Have you seen hospital lighting?
You’d think the nurses would turn on more lights. Netflix
Or this shot, set outside, on a sunny day. The sun is literally right behind the subject of the shot, but the director has staged the shot underneath an overhang so that the shadow lies over half the actor’s face.
The sun is right there! Netflix
This is not a problem of any one director, either. The show’s directorial crew includes esteemed Emmy nominees and winners like Alik Sakharov and Phil Abraham and Bateman himself. No, this is just how the show chooses to light every single shot, so that you always know the characters are in a murky moral gray area, caught between their darker selves and their better selves. There’s no attempt to vary this, and everything has a vaguely bluish tint over it, like the whole story takes place at 6:30 am in November.
But all of the above shots are more or less legible. Yeah, I think they’re all kind of silly as visual metaphors, but you can mostly see what’s going on, and a sufficiently skilled actor (and Ozark has plenty of those) will be able to get across just as much with only half their face as with access to their whole expression.
No, the real problems arise when Ozark stages so many of its scenes in ways that downplay visual contrast, leaving almost everything shrouded in shadow, to the point of genuine incomprehension. (At one point in watching season two, my monitor switched off, and it took me a couple of seconds to figure it out. Once I turned it back on, you couldn’t see anything that was happening anyway.)
Like, what are we supposed to make of this …
Ruth wakes up to see her father. Netflix
Or this …
Guys, you can really turn on some lights. Netflix
Or this?
A pieta! I guess? Netflix
Any one of these images might be stunning if it weren’t surrounded by so many other images that looked just like it. The last one, in particular, accompanies an emotionally powerful moment, and seeing this sort of negative image of a pieta could create something incredibly moving. But when everything is suffused with shadow, it’s harder for those moments to stand out.
The shadowy images are so bad they even swallow some of the show’s attempts at visual humor. For example, try to tell me what’s supposed to be funny about this image:
Any guesses? Netflix
The joke is that this would-be tough guy is wearing a shirt that reads “Take a Dam Ride.” Even if you don’t know who the character is, you should be able to spot the silly pun. But Ozark’s visual scheme chokes even that out.
There are some occasionally interesting visuals in Ozark season two, usually involving the sudden eruption of fire (which has a tendency to cast an unearthly but much-needed glow onto everything nearby). And I liked the season’s final image, which uses the flatter lighting of a news photograph to throw everything that’s happened into relief.
But the show’s visuals, too often, feel like a series playing at seriousness via tricks it learned on other, better shows.
This is a big, emotional moment, which would be evident even in a still if we could see the actors’ faces at all. Netflix
I can already hear Ozark fans lining up to say, “So what if it’s dark and moody? I like dark and moody!” Well, let’s take a look at a famous shot from a series Ozark is frequently compared to: Breaking Bad.
Walter White at night. AMC
Notice how much more definitive the contrast in lighting is here. Yes, you lose a bit of Walter’s face to shadow, but you can still see what’s going on, and the string of lights behind him acts as an effective visual counterpoint to the dark things he’s doing. This is a scene, set at night, that immediately tells you everything you need to know about who Walter is and what he’s doing. And if you know the series, you’ll understand that even better.
What’s more, not all of Breaking Bad was lit like this! In fact, here’s a shot from the very same episode as the shot from above, the classic “Ozymandias” (directed by Rian Johnson).
Skyler’s life falls apart. AMC
Look how powerful that shot is because of the contrast between Skyler’s raging emotions and the starkness of daylight. Her whole life has fallen apart, and the unyielding sun is going to make sure you see every iota of her grief.
But I could point to literally any other great antihero drama and find the sort of visual contrast above. Yes, they all had scenes that took place in darkness and shadow, to great effect, and they all had scenes that seemed to take place in an eerie, autumnal chill. But they also had scenes in contrast to those, where the lights are so bright that you can’t look away from the devastation onscreen.
This sort of visual discontinuity is important to an audience’s experience of a filmed story. When everything looks the same, your brain tends to slide down into a rut of numbing familiarity. Effective filmmakers use visual discontinuity, then, to jar your brain out of that complacency, to make you sit up and take notice. (The great YouTube essayist Lindsay Ellis has a wonderful video on just this topic, covering the Transformers franchise, which has a similar problem to Ozark but in an opposite direction — there, the movies have too much going on in every frame.)
Going from dark to light, from action to inaction, from cacophony to stillness are all ways to keep viewers engaged and invested. Making sure everything is muted and coolly blue is a great way to simply trick the brain into guzzling down more episodes without really thinking about what it’s watching, at least not until moving on to the next thing. It’s a way to make what’s being offered seem like it has weight, without actually doing anything weighty.
The illusion of depth without any actual there there is an Ozark specialty. By the end of season two, it’s dragged itself to exactly where you’d think it would go, and racked up quite a body count (also proving it hasn’t really learned the lessons of the shows that came before it, which did their best to hold off on killing major characters). But none of it feels as if it has any meaning beyond getting from the end of season one to the start of season three. It’s a bridge to nowhere that keeps building itself right in front of you.
Tricking viewers’ brains into continuing to just watch stuff without really engaging with it is typical of this streaming era, and especially typical of Netflix, which too often settles for shows that have the appearance of quality without actually trying to do anything worth watching. They might not be good, but so long as they look good and feature good actors and have the sorts of plot turns you’d find in better shows, your brain might think they’re just good enough to keep going.
This is the specialty of Ozark, which is admittedly not the worst show on the air, or on Netflix. But there are few shows that make me feel more like a sucker once I’ve finished watching.
Ozark is streaming on Netflix.

Financial Misconduct in Utah Divorce Cases
What is financial misconduct? In Utah, it is a basis upon which an Utah divorce court can make a distributive award.
Consider this:
If a spouse has engaged in financial misconduct, including, but not limited to, the dissipation, destruction, concealment, nondisclosure, or fraudulent disposition of assets, the court may compensate the offended spouse with a distributive award or with a greater award of marital property.
So what does this mean in plain English? It means if you are getting divorced and your spouse is destroying, ruining, hiding, or getting rid of assets in a sneaky way, the court can give you some of their separate property to punish them. When a court does this, it is called a distributive award.
youtube
So what is separate property?
(a) “Separate property” means all real and personal property and any interest in real or personal property that is found by the court to be any of the following:
(i) An inheritance by one spouse by bequest, devise, or descent during the course of the marriage;
(ii) Any real or personal property or interest in real or personal property that was acquired by one spouse prior to the date of the marriage;
(iii) Passive income and appreciation acquired from separate property by one spouse during the marriage;
(iv) Any real or personal property or interest in real or personal property acquired by one spouse after a decree of legal separation issued under section 3105.17 of the Revised Code;
(v) Any real or personal property or interest in real or personal property that is excluded by a valid antenuptial agreement;
youtube
(vi) Compensation to a spouse for the spouse’s personal injury, except for loss of marital earnings and compensation for expenses paid from marital assets;
(vii) Any gift of any real or personal property or of an interest in real or personal property that is made after the date of the marriage and that is proven by clear and convincing evidence to have been given to only one spouse.
So what does this all mean? It means if your spouse has separate property, and they are playing games with the marital property, the court can remedy this by giving you some of their separate property.
Retroactive Arrearage Modification Not Prohibited
The Supreme Court has decided that parties to a support order may modify child support by agreement. In Byrd v. Knuckles the Supreme Court held that nothing prohibits a juvenile court from adjusting an existing arrearage in child support if the parties agree to do so.
In this case, as part of an agreement to consent to a step-parent adoption, the Mother agreed that the Father’s child support arrearage would be reduced by 50%. After the adoption was completed, the Father attempted to have his child support arrearage reduced pursuant to this agreement, and the Court found that it had no authority to reduce this arrearage under the Law. This matter was appealed, and then brought before Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court noted that this decision does not mean that a court MUST accept a parties’ agreement to reduce a prior arrearage, but that a court is not prohibited from doing so pursuant to the Law. As in this case, this issue is particularly relevant where one party is willing to sign away their legal rights in order to be released from future, and possibly past child support obligations.
