Seras  /  Romantic Interest: Canon Characters.

As it’s seemed a semi-popular topic for discussion recently, I figured I would finally take a moment to discuss Seras  &  her relationships with certain other characters. Please take this as a blanket disclaimer that these are simply my opinions, relevant to my portrayal; this is not meant to reflect any sort of ‘negativity’ towards shippers  /  those with differing opinions.

Alucard: Ah, yes, the one that almost everyone wonders about. While I’ve likely mentioned this pairing in passing  &  undoubtedly ‘shipped it’ more when I was a bit younger? Allow me to make this perfectly clear: My portrayal of Seras does not have any romantic interest in Alucard. She views him as a mentor  /  teacher, as her sire  /  master, and ultimately: as a father figure (once she’s had the chance to develop that familial attachment). There will be no ‘crushing’ seen on this blog  &  I am not likely to ever have a romantic ship between the two.

( As a related disclaimer: My Alucard, similarly, does not have any romantic interest in Seras. In the quickest way I’ve ever heard it put: Why would the 500+ year old vampire king, have any interest in the 19 year old fledgling kitten? He doesn’t, that’s the answer  —  at least on my blog  /  in my portrayal. )

Serves to say? The dynamic that you will see between my portrayals of these characters, should my muses interact in things like drabbles, will be strictly familial. 

Carrying on from that! A couple other notes.

Integra: This is another one that I’ve seen somewhat regularly, but if I am being entirely honest? I do not see the appeal in this one, nor does my Seras. She views Integra as an employer  &  inevitably as a friend. She holds a great deal of respect  &  adoration towards the other woman, of course. But that dynamic is strictly platonic in nature.

A General Statement: I’m not going to run down the list of every canon character  &  overview my thoughts on every single ship with Seras. That would get extensive, unnecessary, and tiresome to read. The prior mentioned were covered due to the frequency of the subjects  &  more importantly, due to wanting to establish the dynamic between my Seras  &  Alucard.

That being said, my version of Seras is not particularly interested in romance, despite being a romantic at heart. Her work comes first, she values friendships over romantic relationships, etc. The only canon character that she standardly holds romantic affections towards is Pip, following the Ultimate timeline  —  and quite clearly, that is a fleeting situation, considering that my ‘main verse’ for Seras generally takes place after his death; he’s already her familiar  &  I’m like, 90% sure that you cannot reasonably date those.  ( I mean, I guess maybe you could try, but that’s a whole other fucking conversation, now isn’t it? )

Once again: This is not intended to be critical of anyone else’s thoughts on the matter  &  I mean absolutely no harm or hate here. I’m simply laying out my opinions on things, for the sake of my blog’s canon  &  for anyone that may have been curious about it. Quite obviously, your portrayal is most certainly allowed to feel differently than my own  &  I will have absolutely no ‘hard feelings’ towards you for that. As always, ship and let ship  —  you’ll never find any ‘bashing’ on my blog, sweethearts.

My interpretation of Alucard  vs  ‘fanon’ Alucard, are very different when it comes to NS/FW subjects. As we all know, the fandom has a persistent habit of making him this extremely sexual individual. And I… absolutely refuse to do that.

I know, lots of people like to headcanon him as this suave, sex-driven, downright sinful individual. But consider this: trauma.

This post is effectively a run-down on some of the major points that I want to be sure to ‘drive home’ about that topic.

Alucard  /  Sex, Trauma, Related Topics.

🦇  I write him as being frequently adverse to touch, especially until he’s actually comfortable with people. There are very few situations that are an exception to that rule.

🦇  In established romantic relationships, there are still plenty of days where he cannot handle sex or intimacy of that nature. There are the days where he can’t stand his partner touching him, and doesn’t have any real idea how to communicate why that’s the case.

Even once he’s comfortable with someone in this regard, there is frequently going to be a sense of nervousness about it. There’s going to be moments of hesitation. And there’s going to be moments where he pulls away, tells you to go home, whatever else, because he “can’t do this right now.” It’s called trauma.

🦇  His foul mouth and vulgarity? It’s a coping mechanism, more than anything else, and he does not actually mean 80% of the shit that he says. It’s all talk. The moment that someone actually takes it seriously, he’s highly likely to ‘shut down’  &  lose all that filthy charm, because it’s not (usually) legitimate.

🦇  Don’t get me wrong: Alucard can be downright disgusting (for lack of better terms here) at times. He has his ‘fair share’ of kinks, and some of those do contradict the typically-present tension that he has in regards to sex...

But honestly? There are a lot of those, that he’d frequently just assume be what they are  -  take sex out of the equation. Kink without sex, it isn’t a subject that people discuss often enough, but it’s frequently more likely to be ‘on the table’ with Alucard, than actual sex is.  (I could honestly make a whole post just about that, which... I might, at some point here.)

🦇  No matter how filthy he can be, no matter how vulgar his mouth gets, he’s still a trauma victim, and that isn’t something that you can erase with faux-confidence  &  a few lies. These are coping mechanisms, not all of which are particularly healthy. These are impulses that he isn’t actually happy to have, in a lot of cases. These are intrusive thoughts that just sort of... come out of his mouth, and then they’re on the table  -  whether he's happy about it or not.

TL;DR  —  I like talking about his more filthy moments, as much as the next guy, but... Let’s not forget the reality of his situation while we do that, okay?

Oh boy. We could be here all bloody day, going through the various HCs that have cropped up in my head over the years, that I’ve just casually never remembered to publicly post. That being said, most of those do ‘deserve’ a properly formatted HC post, so I’m gonna save my ‘first thoughts’ here for a day where I actually type those up.

However! For the sake of rattling off a HC that applies to this blog’s canon, that doesn’t really require an entire post made about it:

As you all know, while I’ll always be an OVA-based blog, I do take a lot of inspiration from the Gonzo anime. With that in a mind: a lot of Seras  &  Alucard’s first meeting within the Gonzo timeline? Applies to this blog’s canon  /  my versions of those characters.

While yes, it doesn’t stray that much from what the OVA  /  manga did with those scenes, there are key differences that we’ve all noted before  —  and in a lot of ways, I prefer how Gonzo handled those particular scenes.  (This isn’t to say that the OVA scenes inherently aren’t blog canon, just that… some of the specifics, in Gonzo, are how I actually imagine it went down, for the sake of this blog’s interpretations.)

Her straight-up shooting him at first? Blog canon, 100%.  ( “You’re not human.”  /  “Would you have shot me if I was?”  -  those lines, stand out here too. )

Most of Alucard’s lines to the ‘priest’?  “I’ve had enough of you.”  being the opening comment? Also blog canon. The majority of his lines in that scene, actually, as they felt far more… appropriate, to the given situation, than most of the lines within the OVA.

“This is where you’re supposed to close your eyes.” and being just… generally less detached, about turning Seras? Blog canon, baby.

When it comes to sexual encounters, Alucard is very much a ‘lights out’ lover. Being most people don’t have a vampire’s night vision, it feels far less ‘vulnerable’ if the room’s pitch-black  &  he’s the only one that can actually see properly. And as we all know, he isn’t exactly a fan of vulnerability.

Vulnerability aspects aside? He’s far more comfortable in the dark, just in general, and actually being able to relax is mandatory for these sort of situations to go anywhere enjoyable.

( Besides: Imagine the ‘tricks’ you can pull off in the dark, when you have the shadow manipulation nonsense that he does. Imagine. )

Seras:  Her views on sex are something that end up a little complicated. She considers it a way to connect with your partner, in a different (though not necessarily better) way than other intimacy allows. Unfortunately, she also struggles to view sex as something that is inherently safe. It unsettles her, it makes her nervous, it reminds her of dangers that she’d much rather forget. That being said, nobody’s going to be having sex with Seras until she wants that emotional connection, feels that it would improve your relationship with her, and is actually able to relax about the idea. Side-Note? Hearing about other people having sex, where the experience was positive / happy, while fundamentally embarrassing, is something that makes her happy; it’s proof that sexual instances aren’t bad for everyone.

Walter:  He typically views sex as something that is, first and foremost, a matter of stress relief. While there’s definitely something to be said about emotional connection, and things of that nature, as well, that isn’t generally the original ‘point’  —  though if it’s beneficial to that with a partner, then more emphasis will be put on that part in the future.

Alucard:  This is another instance where there’s really no ‘short answer’ to give. He considers sex something that is fundamentally healthy for people and relationships  —  for a combination of reasons, including those listed in the above responses. That being said, considering how often sex is a difficult thing for him to engage in, this view leads to quite a bit of frustration. Frustration at himself, for not being able to relax about something that could potentially be important to relationships. Frustration at the fact that it frequently is important, because maybe if it wasn’t, then it wouldn’t matter so much. So on, and so forth. Long story short? He has mixed feelings about the subject. Instances where he’s able to enjoy it, it’s a lovely thing; the infrequency of that, is terribly stressful.

Heinkel:  Due to religious rhetoric, sex is something that they view, first and foremost, as a sin. It’s something that they’ve internalized, and not something that they’re likely to stop feeling that way about anytime soon. That being said, they’re not completely adverse to the idea; they simply would prefer those matters be kept entirely private, and are liable to end up with religious guilt over it later.

✑ + Kassi & Alucard

Well, my partner here’s a rule breaker that didn’t send me a number for this meme - but that’s alright! I’m just gonna rattle off some of my favorite HCs for these darling disasters.

Every autumn season, without fault, Kassi manages to con Alucard into trying a pumpkin-spice-flavored something. Every year, he finds the entire ordeal absolutely ridiculous, and has yet to genuinely see the appeal in any of it. She hasn’t given up, and she likely never will. At this point, it would almost be stranger if she didn’t insist on it — and besides, there’s usually some gifted blood gained from the debate, so who’s he to really protest?

This is the singular plot where someone has convinced Alucard to attempt to understand modern technology, beyond its basic functions. There are still frequent confusions, and he’s never taken to adoring it nearly to the degree that his little hacker does, but he tries. Somewhat. When there’s something to be gained from the attempt.

Kassi has taken to teaching Alucard how to play various video games with her. As expected, he doesn’t understand the appeal of this either, but he does humor her with them from time to time. Honestly? He’d rather be sprawled at her side like a lazy guard dog, watching while she fusses with the damned games, than actually be playing them with her.

Kassi’s desire to be a vampire someday, is one of the few things about the girl that genuinely stresses Alucard out. Falling for a human may not be the brightest idea, but it’s never something that he does with the intention of turning them — at the very least, not anymore. Human life is precious, no matter how fleeting, and being a monster — stuck here, unable to die when you’ve had enough? That isn’t something he particularly wishes on most people. Certainly not Kassi.

That being said, the girl’s made clear that she’s no desire to die - that the thought genuinely troubles her - and… As much as he doesn’t inherently approve? He isn’t planning to stop the girl’s adoptive, vampiric father, when he inevitably makes the call to turn her. Alucard has said his part, expressed his distaste, and made it abundantly clear that it’s up to Kai to do it — but he isn’t going to argue with either of them any further, either.

🔥 + sex drive (seras, walter, alucard)

Seras:  She has a rather notably low sex drive. Setting aside the traumas that plague this girl, setting aside the fact that she’s a virgin  —  none of that’s even particularly the point. While Seras is someone that, under the right circumstances, is entirely capable of being comfortable with sex, engaging in such with a long-term partner, etc; the fact stands that she’s frequently not interested in those activities. It’s honestly the least of her concerns, at most times.

Walter:  As most peoples’ sex drive fluctuates with age, this question is highly dependent on the given timeline. I’ve always written Walter as having a fairly high sex drive in his younger years, but that’s ‘evened out’ by the OVA timeline; as typically happens when someone’s nearly 70. That being said, my technical ‘default’ verse is that obscure Survived Verse that I came up with… And in that case, being that’s based on having somehow survived to later live as an artificial vampire? Yeah, the sex drive’s mostly back intact in that.

Alucard:  While his sex drive is entirely functional, and can honestly be a bit high at times, it’s also extremely prone to fluctuations. He can go months, years, without really dwelling on the matter too much  —  or without letting himself dwell on it, in other cases. However, that doesn’t change the moments where it’s rather persistent; which is typically when the intrusive thoughts, the abruptly filthy comments, the antagonistic bullshit, etc., happen. Setting aside the fluctuations in his sex drive, moments where it’s ‘functional’ do not mean that sex is on the table. I won’t go into another ‘consider: trauma’ speech right now, but consider that. Also, once again, he’s frequently adverse to touch in the first place, and that’s liable to ‘get in the way’ of such activities as well. Summary? His sex drive more than exists, but it’s complicated.
