I always wish Sean lived for longer in the game, but I also can't take the heartbreak Sean would've gone through if he went through the deaths of the gang.
I don't know for sure, but to rub some salt into the wound, imagine Sean finally began to respect a little. A little, but enough to where Sean wasn't looking to headbutt him and let his anger loose on the poor soul. Then Kieran dies. He wouldn't be as shaken as Mary-Beth, but even Sean can't justify the way Kieran went out. Even for an O'Driscoll.
Imagine Sean being on the Saint Denis job, finally softening up to Hosea, then seeing him go out like that.
Don't imagine Sean being there when Lenny was shot. Don't imagine him screaming out Lenny's name and saying that he should stay by him, to make sure he's okay, but Arthur grabbing him up by his collar and dragging him away.

Thinking of how Varric is always the survivor and remembrance of tradegy, always putting a hint of tradegy or misfortune in his book. He likes to put his characters through pain, it makes an interesting story, and how heroes aren't without their trials and tribulations contrasted to Sean's lighthearted storytelling in the midst of tradegy and trauma. He talks about his dad in a good light, hinting at how he copes with grief. Sean is a light in the darkness just as Varric brings light to the darkness.

WHAT DOES YOUR HEART LOOK LIKE ?
* 𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐌𝐀𝐂𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐑𝐄
A BIRD STRUGGLING TO GET LOOSE
Your heart can never hold still. It pounds against your chest frantically, always turning your sights to one thing after the next. When was the last time you were certain? The last time your life was stable? Maybe this is how you prefer things. On the move constantly, not tied down to one person or place. You chase one goal after the next. Can you ever really feel complete without a place to land? Shouldn’t you build yourself a nest?

I just have this weird thought that on one of Sean's home robbery jobs, he snuck into this old lady's house and she finds him. But instead of fighting him off, she pities him and just keeps giving him all this food and being nice to him because Sean looks skinny as hell and malnourished to her. She probably assumes he's a teenager. So Sean just leaves the house with a ton of left overs he has to figure out how to fit in his saddlebag for the gang.

WHAT TYPE OF VILLAIN ARE YOU ?
* 𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐌𝐀𝐂𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐑𝐄
NO MORAL COMPASS
You are cold, analytical, and you strive to be as objective as a person of flesh and blood can be. Either don't understand the concepts of good and evil, or you understand it perfectly and think it's a load of bull. Some may call you selfish, some may call you unfeeling, but you're just doing what you believe will yield the best results, plain and simple. Why bother with petty ideals of right or wrong when you can do what will actively help those you give a fuck about? Your goals may be selfish or noble or anything in between, but you will not let anyone make you feel like garbage for going after them. You couldn't care less about what people brand you as. You just care about getting shit done by any means necessary.

I don't think Sean hates John, by any means. He's fun to pick on, but he really disagrees with how John ran away from being a father.
I don't think Sean does this out of "I wouldn't leave my child if I was in his position," or any connection to tradition and male expectation. (The standards for men might linger under his opinion, buried deep within societal conditioning, but it's not the extent of his disagreement). Sean really disagrees with John there because of his own connection with his father.
We can see that Sean thinks highly of his father, he has spoken fondly of his family history, hid Irish heritage, and seems to have countless stories of his da. Other than his dad being his only major parental figure growing up, his mother dying when he was young and having no recollection of her, I think this is how he deals with his grief. He talks about his memories of his dad because it helps him with his grief and keeps him alive in a way. (Also the circumstances around his death and how Sean didn't step in to help still haunts Sean a bit to this day). Sean also sees his dad as an extension of his beliefs (like with Irish revolution and hating rich folks). But his dad tried hard to take care of Sean as much as he could on the run. He tried to get Sean into school, but with the constant moving, it was really hard. He wanted the best for Sean. He taught him how to steal, but it was always because it was a necessity. It wasn't the best thing to pass down to Sean, but Darragh really had no choice sometimes when they were starving and needed the basic necessities.
With all of that in mind, Sean really doesn't agree with John's dismissal of Jack and running away because his own dad didn't step away. He took care of Sean through the chaos and mayhem, fleeing Ireland and lawmen to America. He took care of Sean in both places, America and Ireland. Even when he was wanted from the law, traveling town to town, he made sure Sean was fed, clothed, and cleaned with a roof over his head. Sean knows of a good father figure (in his eyes) and it really molded his view of what a father should be.

Bit of a lengthy post about Sean and his trauma with some new developments
So for my social work class, I'm reading this really interesting book called The Boy Who was Raised as a Dog by Bruce Perry. It's really interesting on how he describes trauma in children. While this is focused on children, I write adults here but plenty of my muses have a trauma related to their backstory and character. Sean is one of the best examples of this and I found some of his explanations could apply to my portrayal of Sean. I'm not a doctor, or a professional of any mental health disorder, or anything regarding trauma. I might not be 100% correct, so please educate me and/or take my words with a grain of salt.
The highlighted portions are what I found interesting with Sean

Sean has various different traumatic events in his life, from a young age to 23-years-old. Sean had to deal with a rough living being on the run, stealing and likely being a witness to violent acts of his father with law enforcement in Ireland. Then Sean had to be a witness to his father's death. He didn't see it, but he remembers the listening cues and knew when his father died. He has a lot of guilt over this. Then there's also reform school, which is essentially juvie in our modern day, and who knows what he dealt with there right after he was thrown from a traumatic event of his father being killed in the room over. Then there's his time with bounty hunters where they ripped teeth, burned his feet, strung his up, punched and manhandled him all for information on the VDLG. There's likely numerous other violent and traumatic aspects of his past with Sean's lifestyle, being thrown into a criminal lifestyle since birth, but these are the main focus of his trauma history.
Onto the character analysis: some say Sean has ADHD, but I'm not sure if he does or not. I'm leaning more towards him having trauma and showing symptoms that are similar to ADHD (since that often happens with trauma-inflicted individuals). We're not sure how he's like before r.dr2 personality-wise, but nobody seems to note anything on a personality change with Sean. But I wanted to say that Sean's aggression towards Kieran (other than gang loyalty) could be a way for Sean to gain control with his recent traumatic event (the bounty hunters incident) in how they showed aggression towards him and tried to get Sean to submit to their will, so he shows aggression towards Kieran. Not every person with trauma or PTSD is violent, I just want to note.
I think Sean's joking and almost proding and challenging attitude towards his captors could've been a way for his brain to deal with the torment brought onto him. And the excessive drinking, lack of sleep (like falling asleep during guard duty) could've been brought on by his trauma. I think Sean was a rather impulsive and easily distracted child, especially coming out during reform school. With his father's death so closely tied to it and a lack of social support around him, the rest of his family being another continent away, I think perhaps these behaviors were influenced by his trauma?

MORALITY ALIGNMENT TEST
* 𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐌𝐀𝐂𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐑𝐄
82% CHAOTIC NEUTRAL
You hold your freedom as your most treasured possession, and may be willing to do whatever is necessary to maintain it. In a conflict between two outside forces, you may play both sides to help you gain that which you desire, which can be dangerous not handled wisely; simultaneously, you may not necessarily act so strongly to defend others' freedom. This lack of regard for authority and its constraints, with no true animosity for humanity, molds you into the archetypal "maverick". 73% : Chaotic Good | 73% : Chaotic Evil | 55% : True Neutral | 51% : Neutral Evil | 38% : Neutral Good | 23% : Lawful Good | 4% : Lawful Neutral | 3%: Lawful Evil
#( 𝑨 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒊𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒊𝒎 ; headcanon (( Sean ))#( I would say he's more chaotic good but sorta? )#( like Sean was part of a movement for working class rights in one dynamic but he was also manipulated into it tho )#( and Sean has Irish revolution ideals with his father's influence )#( but he tends to be more self-centered with his freedom? Like in regards to the gang )#( and not actively protesting as a whole for other people in the world just fighting for the gang's freedom )#( and his own to some extent )#( but I don't think he disregards humanity as a whole )#( he just knows its very hard to totally fight the system for equality for all )#( so he does it more smaller strides with the gang and all that with Dutch's philosophy )

WHAT COLOR IS YOUR AURA ?

FIRE
sunrises, woven blankets, campfires, tigers, whiskey, monarchs, roadtrips. your essence is fire: you are the bold spirit of adventure. you seek out others who can broaden your horizons; a life best lived is one that's vivacious, but also makes a difference. you are steadfastly committed to your values and do not waver from your opinions. you are the inspirer. you are the opportunist. you find kinship in like-minded individuals of coral, bronze, red, and orange, who share your strong opinions. you are also drawn to the contemplative souls jade and chartreuse, who will help you grow and see the fullness of your vision. however, you may struggle to get along with the opinionated personalities of wine and mauve who act above reproach.

I know Evie has an official handwriting look because we can see her notebook entries in the game, but I tried to find a font super similar to this. I think this is probably one of the closest. I think Evie, as the perfectionist she is, tries to make all her handwriting clear and concise. Even if she's the only one looking over her own notebook entries, she has the instinct to make it as readable and professional as possible.
Since Jacob in the 19th century, cursive was the writing style most people wrote in. Jacob still follows this, but I think Jacob's handwriting is more simplistic and less "professional". He writes quicker than Evie and spends less time trying to perfect his handwriting since Jacob doesn't like to spend his time writing. His handwriting is still neat, which shows Jaco has spent time perfecting his handwriting when he was younger.
Sean! So Sean is illiterate, but I would imagine he learned how to write out his name in reform school. Supposedly Sean has official handwriting in the game files, but I don't think Sean cares for cursive writing at all lmao. "Why do I have to write in cursive when this works just as well?" he takes pride in his less eloquent handwriting. A lot of the retracing over his words is from his time practicing how to read and write. He has to commit the shape of what's his writing to memory.

Anyway it's easy to get Sean annoyed (and sometimes entirely pissed off) if you use the phrase "The luck of the Irish" around him or in reference to him. (It also depends on the scenario but most interactions will get a negative reaction from him). Just based on the implications of that phrase and history of Ireland (around before and during the 1800s). He takes it personally.
