What’s wild is that you can write a story that revolves around two male characters and make it sibling-coded or as obviously platonic as you want, but Hori didn’t do that. Right up until the finish line he fed the bkdk’s when given the choice.

He didn’t have to give Katsuki an 11+ year hang up about holding Izuku’s hand. He didn’t have to make Izuku so possessive, or have him go feral anytime Katsuki was looked at wrong. He certainly didn’t have to give Izuku the “I’m gonna hurt your loved one to hurt you” trope or have Katsuki use Izuku’s kiddie nickname for himself in front of the biggest bad.

He gave Izuku the “control your heart” complex that centered entirely on Katsuki

He had Katsuki literally die and come back to life thinking only about Izuku

He gave them the big eyes-meet-across-the-battlefield moment and that voiceover about how their feelings were finally one

At every opportunity, right up until the epilogue chapter, Hori chose to write Izuku and Katsuki like you would the main hero and heroine in any action story and it worked

Thinking their creepy af, crazy af, blood thirsty blonde counterpart is the cutest things in the whole world

Izuku once said that when someone holds his hand he feels at ease and in the new one he says it again just worded a little bit differently

“… Holding someone’s hand can put your heart at ease, did you know that?”

However there’s only one person who he has held his hand out twice for which said person refused to take, Katsuki Bakugo

Izuku extended his hand out to Katsuki twice and in both Katsuki refused to take his hand

And in both times it was for the exact same reason. Izuku was worried about Katsuki and Katsuki viewed it as a weakling worrying about him

And yet Katsuki refused both times, however now all Katsuki wants and is yearning for is to hold Izuku’s hand

As Katsuki kept developing so did the relationship between him and Izuku. He has come to terms about his feelings towards Izuku and his relationship with Izuku. So much so that now Katsuki goes “De- Izuku” and now he is fully ready to put his heart at ease

But what about Izuku? If we were to flip it around then what we get is completely different than Katsuki’s

Izuku has feelings for Katsuki I mean he can’t even imagine a world without Katsuki that says a lot, but they aren’t fully resolved he hasn’t come into terms towards his feelings for Katsuki

I mean Izuku literally goes into demon mode whenever Katsuki is involved wether someone is simply talking shit about Katsuki or when Katsuki get hurt

And since Izuku said that he feels at ease when someone holds his hand then imagine how Izuku would feel if the person who was always there were to extend his hand out towards him

Izuku’s heart will truly feel at ease and all those unresolved feelings he has been having towards Katsuki will simply wash away, they will disappear. All those pent up feelings/emotions will come together piece by piece like a puzzle

Thus at the end if Katsuki were to reach his hand out towards Izuku then it will surely and perfectly be complete. Katsuki’s heart will feel at ease because finally he gets to hold Izuku’s hand and Izuku’s heart will feel at ease because Katsuki extended out his hand. It would come full circle just how they are the definition of ‘win to save’ / ‘save to win’

You know what also doesn't make sense?? People are translating or clarifying the offer katsuki made and saying he was asking Izuku to be a SIDEKICK, and not open/partner at an agency.

But you know what, that doesn't really make sense either!

Bc they're also saying that in the MHA universe, sidekicks do not get hero ranked. And in the case of being katsukis sidekick, Izuku would be working under Katsuki.

So hold up!

You mean to tell me that Katsuki, who wanted to compete with Izuku, and race him to the top, who has long, LONG since gotten over his desire to put Izuku in his place/lord over him/boss him around,

How can they compete like that?

Why would he want Izuku in a position where he couldn't compete on an equal ground? That was what he always wanted and worked for.

I'm just saying it's fucking weird that thats what katsuki asked for, because that's not what Katsuki has been trying to work for.

Isn't Katsuki wanting him to be a sidekick under him kind of defeating the purpose of his development, of the whole 8 hear process he went through to get Izuku back out into the field? Is this not inconsistent?

I like to think that pre canon both AFO and Izuku visited the same online forums where people came together to discuss quirks and often debated with each other about pro hero quirks lol. Their first conversation ever was arguing over aspects of All Mights quirk because AFO said something insulting about him.

Izuku finds AFO abrasive, but creates some of the most fascinating analysis he's ever read that he wonders if AFO is some kind of quirk counselor or doctor who specializes in studying quirks in real life.

AFO finds it refreshing to see someone share the same enthusiasm about quirks like he does and enjoys reading and challenging Izuku's own theories at times.

I wouldn't call it friendship.... but more like two people finding common ground in sharing a hobby that almost no one else cares for.

The crazy thing about bkdk is that when Hori decided not to focus on traditional romance but instead to focus on this relationship between Izuku and Katsuki, he laid the foundation for one of the greatest romances ever. Bkdk had so much substance, such a strong foundation, because Hori decided they were his focus. So even if he had tried to write a traditional romance bkdk would have always had the most chemistry and been the most plausible option due to the canon content. He maybe didn’t mean to do it but he really did give us the most fleshed out relationship full of every ounce of yearning he could pack into it and there’s no coming back from that. Bkdk is here to stay., no matter what happens in canon.

Easily one of the best episodes of season four, a season that people had mixed feelings on when it premiered. The animation for this episode was provided by Takafumi Hori, a former animator for Studio Trigger and a friend of the crew.
