The motivation to do much of anything just wasn't there for Tanner yet. The last few months of her life had been a slog of trying to figure out what she was going to do next. The move to Kismet brought a whole different wave of emotions and Tanner had been mostly keeping to herself since arriving a few days before. Sitting down at one of the benches for the food truck village, Tanner was gazing out at the water, lost in thought. It was pretty crowded with the evening rush for dinner and her table was one of the only ones left with any room. Spotting someone lost for a place to sit, Tanner hefted out a sigh before motioning to the woman that she could take the other half of her table. When Verity came in closer, there was a vague sense of recognition there, an inkling that she'd perhaps seen Verity somewhere before. "Is it always this fucking busy here?" she asked, scooting a bit to make enough room for Verity to sit.

finally, he'd managed to carve out a moment of peace. the order and his work consumed far too much of his time. not to mention the family events he was, unfortunately, obliged to attend. he didn’t subscribe to the ridiculous pureblood charade his parents still felt the need to parade around. who were they trying to impress? it was a mystery. all their friends had gone over to the dark side, and the pureblood families they now socialised with had no interest in any of their beliefs. but anyway. after weeks of putting it off, he’d finally sent the owl he'd promised to frances that night when he'd been fortunate enough to meet her. and now, here they were, meeting up. or a date. or whatever it was. “ for a moment there, i thought you weren’t going to show, ” he exaggerates, and his sly grin makes it clear he’s enjoying himself. “ though, to be honest, you had every right to leave me hanging. it wasn’t very gallant of me to keep you waiting like that. ” he admits, shrugging casually. it was his way of apologising... a rather peculiar one, but pride always came first with edgar. “ so, how’s london treating you? did you manage to find any decent places, or were you just waiting for me? ”

Even the way she enunciates the words seems calculated—light and cloyingly sweet on her tongue, but not quite cheery. She runs the brush through her gilded hair, from root to tip, in a perfectly straight line—like a ritual. Her neck and spine remain impeccably straight too, rigid against the mirrored reflection, as though she stands before a competitor and cannot afford to show weakness.

Another strand. She continues:

"I'm sure some people think I deserve horrible, horrible things to happen to me."

There, the faintest hint of a smile blooms, softening the outline of her lips—amused. The doll-like lilt of her voice does not waver, but her curiosity does.

"Tell me—what is it that you think I deserve?"

Truth be told, she wasn’t supposed to be back at the Leaky Cauldron. After her ‘elegant and decadent penthouse apartment ’ was finished, Verity was supposed to start casing other hot spots with high wixen traffic. And that had been exactly what she’d been doing — efficiently bumping into some Ministry jackoff named Yacksbee or something or other. He was on the list of wealthy Pureblood heirs she was supposed to mingle with, and after enough chat about her flat, which did not end with the expected suggestive invitation back to it, she somehow ended up in Diagon Alley shopping for decor and furniture. The man was weirdly preoccupied with ensuring her space was ‘properly outfitted’, and Verity wasn’t shocked to learn he was single. What woman would put up with this? When he inevitably dumped her on the street for some other pressing matters, leaving her with no intel and no company, the agent had little else to do except go to the pub for a drink. And truthfully, she quite liked the place.

It was surprisingly empty, though she thought it was because it was still working hours. There was a lingering somber atmosphere, the recent interview leaks having every bit to do with it. It was helpful for Verity, even if it left more questions than answers. In particular that Auror questioning what was going on with this ‘Fudge’ character — Verity wondered if she could meet this Auror and get his theories, or even go directly to the grieving family. While this wasn’t her investigation, having a better grasp on whatever happened to the Fudge girl could only help her reconnaissance mission. And she was endlessly curious. It was an unsolved murder after all, sue her for wanting answers. So caught in her thoughts, she was taken by surprise when another patron spoke up. “Oh?” She blinked, turning her eyes on the other. She’d been sitting there deep in thought, she hadn’t even touched the fruity cocktail she ordered. The kind of drink her cover, Fancy Beauchamp, would want, but not what an Appalachian kitten weaned on moonshine like Verity Walker enjoyed. “Maybe I’m still getting used to the time difference an’ all,” she replied, voice laced in that southern accent that was sugary sweet. “Though, I don’t have any sorrows to drown. This drink doesn’t seem right for that, anyhow,” she laughed, a melodic and saccharine sound. She paused, looking at the other’s drink a moment. It seemed to be not as touched either. “Is that what you came here for? I hate to say it, but you don’t look so chipper either, darlin’. If you don’t believe me, I have a compact mirror that’s been known to tell a girl the cold hard truth about herself, and I’m afraid it ain’t always so pretty.” Her tone was equal parts teasing as it was warm, as if a bit concerned. “Long day?”
