You’re actually shaken. The picture reached you via Spider, but you know that you had nothing to do with it. He was already messing with the game, before you had mentioned it. You stumble into your house, still managing to be quiet even as you collapsed on a chaise. Briefly you wonder why you even had one. Then you remember most of the furniture Ash picked out.

You hear movement and feel the slightest breeze before your daughter is kneeling in front of you. Casey’s blue eyes find yours and you sit up hugging her tightly. Oh how you wish you were a better mother. One who could protect her from everything, instead of letting her see you at your utmost weakest. You blame the Candy timeline parents for being the worst, but honestly, are you any better?

“Mom, can’t breathe-”

You quickly release her. “…we can run. Just the three of us.” Selfish. Selfish, terrible thought. You realize it the moment it leaves your lips and her expression goes sour.

She stands up, ripping herself from your arms. “And leave everyone else to struggle? Are you fucking serious, Mom?”

“…No, Casey, no I’m not.”

She simmers but she’s still upset. You’re so very thankful, once again, that she looks nothing like you or your brother. You don’t think you could handle it if she did.

“Are you… ready? Are we ready?”

“Nobody is truly ever ready, Casey-kins. But we’re as prepared as we’re going to ever be.”

“…I love you.”

“And I love you, so very much. You and Helevi stick together. Have each other’s back. Once the game starts… I don’t know what’s going on happen to me. I don’t know who I’m going to be.”

“You’re going to be Rose fucking Lalonde, and you’re going to be a bad ass.”

You really hope she’s right. But something tells you she’s not.

You’re pacing the floor, anxious and maybe even a little scared. The grub, Epeira, was sitting on the counter, watching you. Helevi had been by earlier, dropping off a basket of things that their lusus had given them.

You heard the crackle, felt the electricity vibrating the air before he appeared. You were prepared, claws ready, an aggressive hiss escaping your throat. And all he does is chuckle and pat your head. He looked over at Epeira, you assumed, then back at you. You take the grub, hold her close.

“Get the fuck out.” You bared your teeth. “Zee will be here soon.”

“I’m just here to offer advice, worry not. I’m not afraid of your little clown either. I was very fond of my Vriska, before she died. It was a sad occasion. You know, I never thought I’d see the day when one of you actually made your own decisions, or even survived to do so. Not following a path set before you. I’m so proud of you, you know. Not everyone can find forgiveness and peace. Kat certainly hasn’t.”

The words made your skin crawl and you acted before you thought. Your fist collided with his head, knocking him back. Your eyes grew wide and you backed up quickly, moving the grub to a safe spot. Which was a cabinet. He stood, and for a moment you thought you were going to have to fight.

“Your lusus would be so disappointed in you however.”

And he zapped away with a wave of the fingers, and you were relieved. You retrieved the grub, holding her close. She squeaked and squirmed, finally settling down to gnaw on your finger. She kind of reminded you of Helevi, when they were a grub. Just, not a seadweller. You always gave Eri shit for raising a kid, instead of just letting nature take its course. Yet here you are, doing the same thing. It took mere minutes for you to calm down, though you knew that you were still shaking. You moved your fingers across the table, like Spidermom used to do with you with her leg. She followed them, little grubby body sneaking across the surface after them. It was kind of cute. Still gross, but cute.

Didn’t stop you from nearly jumping out of your skin when Zee came in right as she chomped down on your hand. Ow.

What have you been doing this whole time? Arguing with Jane. She didn't like being pushed out, but at the end of the day you needed to do what you needed to do. She couldn't really argue. You made your points- and it wasn't like she didn't worship the ground Meenah walked on. She was just put out that you didn't give her a choice.

The one truly put out was Feferi. She was weak, naive, and still so very childish. Angry, threatening you like she had any true power. What could she do? What could she hope to do? Eridan was a problem she refused to deal with, after all, and he wouldn't magically (haha) come to her aid because she batted her eyelashes.

Spider's reports grew more and more precarious every day. Every report was filled with more damage, more death. He was growing more ballsy during the transition of power, and not without good reason. You had to hand it to him. Taking some personal time, though desperately needed, probably wasn't the best idea. You still had yet to speak to Damon about pushing back the wedding. Perhaps you should've just eloped like he suggested.

In the midst of your thoughts, Casey runs up and grabs your hand. She's grown so much, already an adult. What are you going to do when she finally decides to leave home? You think to that pup who called you Mother when you were visiting Riley and your heart pangs. You wanted nothing more than to scoop them up and hold them all tightly. In another world, in another life, you couldn't imagine not raising your own child. Even if Kanaya kept zero contact with you, you still had contact with the wriggler you both adopted. Visited often. Same with your other children, adopted or ecto. The timelines all had their variances. Yours was you couldn't procreate, so you really did have to have ectochildren.

"Mom! Hello! Earth to Mom!"

Casey's giggles bring you back and you... have to look up at her. She's tall, like John. Thank the green sun. "I'm sorry, dear. What's up?"

"Hel said something about a game Aunt Spider told them not to play? But it's on pre-order right now, they said it's due out in a year. Their lusus is throwing an absolute shitfit right now. Um... and Mama called-"

Your stomach sinks. You really shouldn't have taken that sabbatical. Karkat probably reached out to Kanaya about everything, after all, they were still really close. Funny how she forgives his transgressions, but she couldn't quite get over yours.

"She said that she heard about the empress, and she wants to sit in on the next meeting. I don't know how it's going to go, Eridan, Mama, Meenah, Feferi, AND Aunt Jane? I think you should let Hal go for emotional support, you know?"

You don't know how this meeting is going to go, but it certainly won't go well. Then you'll have to make an announcement to everyone else. That will go over, arguable worse.

You watch in horror as the wriggler crawls from the massacred remains of the egg. Honestly you kind of forgot about it. Terrible parenting, but you were never made to be a lusus. You tilt your head, watching the little thing for a moment until it starts trying to crawl to you.

You have never called R so fast.

You were NOT raising this thing. You don’t think you could raise a mini you anyway. You could barely handle Helevi when they were just barely still a wriggler.
