The bass of the speakers were pounding, y/n’s hand looped into Madelyn’s as they wove through the sea of bodies on the dance floor. She and Madelyn weren’t late per say, the two of them had just opted to spend a bit more time pregaming and getting around before they left for the club… perhaps they were just fashionably late. The smell of sweat and alcohol filled y/n’s lungs as she and Madelyn finally broke through the crowd, ending up in front of the table while the rest of the Outer Banks cast was sitting around.

“There they are!” Chase clapped, causing the table to let out into a round of hoots and hollers as they raised their drinks towards the two girls. Y/n grinned, her eyes scanning around at the faces of her castmates before landing on a familiar pair of dusty blue eyes. 

Towards one end of the booth, Drew sat nursing a drink. His ringed fingers fiddled with the slice of lime perched upon the lip of his glass. He wore a white button down, the top few buttons undone to reveal the chain that rested just atop his tanned skin. She hadn’t even realized how much she was staring until someone said her name.

“Hmm?” Y/n said, straightening her back as she looked around.

“Damn, how much did you guys pregame, Cline?” Madison teased, glancing over at Madelyn as she slid into the booth next to Chase. Y/n rolled her eyes, looking down to fiddle with the short hem of her dress. The black mesh wrapped around her body, the fabric bunched up around her right hip before falling open in a slit. Throughout the fabric were sequins that beautifully reflected the flashing lights of the club. It wasn’t what she’d usually wear to something like this, but Madelyn convinced her to buy it specifically for the wrap party.

“Sit down, y/n, let’s get this party started!” Chase said just as Rudy returned to the table, his arms full of shots of tequila. He sat the shots down, everyone grabbing for them with excited squeals. Y/n looked around the table, for an open spot. She noticed a spot next to Madison, but it was quickly filled as Drew nudged at Jonathan to scoot over, opening a spot next to Drew instead.

“Here.” Drew grinned, patting the cushion of the booth. Y/n flashed him a smile before sliding in next to him. She smoothed her hands down her dress, the fabric hiking up as she sat down. Drew’s eyes flicked down to the skin of her thigh before quickly looking back up at y/n. Now that she was closer to him, she could see the flush of his cheeks that usually adorned his face when he drank.

“Y– you look nice.” Drew said, his voice low underneath the blaring music

“What?” Y/n asked, leaning in closer. Drew did the same, his arm moving to rest on the back of the seat as he leaned in.

“You look nice.” Drew repeated, his lips nearly brushing her ear. Y/n felt her cheeks arm as she looked over at him, his face mere inches from her own. Y/n opened her mouth to respond, but then—

“Y/n and Drew!” Madelyn shouted, causing y/n and Drew to whip their heads around. Rudy let out a small chuckle from behind the rim of his glass.

“Yeah?” Drew hummed, straightening slightly.

“Shots!” Madison hollered, gesturing to the two remaining shots. Drew reached for them, handing one to y/n.

“To Outer Banks, thank you for introducing us to our family and changing our lives!” Chase sang before everyone brought their shots in in a chorus of cheers. The glasses clinked together before they tossed the shots back, the burning liquid sliding down y/n’s throat with a small wince.

“Jeez,” y/n coughed, “I feel like I’m back in college.”

Drew laughed before offering his drink out to her. She took it, taking a long sip of his drink before finishing it off.

“Shit.” Y/n swore, mixing the ice around. “Sorry.”

“No problem.” Drew chuckled. “Come with me to get a refill?”

Y/n nodded, sliding out of the booth. She stumbled a bit, the heels she’d chosen swaying her balance. Before she could get too far, a hand quickly shot out to steady her hip.

“Woah there,” Drew said, looking over y/n as he got to his feet, “you good?”

“Yeah, yeah.” Y/n laughed. “Let’s get drunk!”

Drew grinned, following y/n as they made their way to the bar. As they wove through the crowded dance floor, y/n could feel Drew’s hand move to rest on her lower back. She let out an involuntary sharp inhale, her heart skipping at the feeling of Drew’s touch, even if it was just his attempt at being gentlemanly. However, even as they cleared the crowd, Drew’s hand remained on her.

The two of them approached the bar, ordering their drinks before leaning against the bartop. Y/n looked back at the sea of people for a moment, the bodies mushed together and bathed in glitter and flashing lights, before turning to glance over at Drew. He was already looking at her, his eyes tracing the path from her dress up to her face slowly. Once their eyes met, they both quickly looked away.

Just in time, the bartender dropped off their drinks before scurrying over to the next person. Drew took them both, handing y/n’s to her. Y/n thanked him, taking a sip of her drink with a hum. Drew did the same, looking at her over the rim of his glass as he did so.

“Is there something on my face?” Y/n asked, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear as she furrowed her brow.

“Oh, no I just—” Drew stammered, clearing his throat.

Suddenly, the beginning notes of the next song rang out across the club, causing the dancefloor to erupt in cheers. Y/n’s eyes widened, swatting at Drew’s shoulder excitedly.

“C’mon, we’re dancing Starkey!” Y/n squealed, grabbing Drew’s hand before dragging him out onto the dancefloor without a second thought. Drew hastily took a long sip of his drink, finishing it off before leaving the empty glass on some other party’s table. He prayed the alcohol would quell the churning in his stomach at y/n’s simple, friendly gesture that had his head reeling and thinking about things he definitely shouldn’t be thinking about.

The two of them wove through the dancing bodies before finding a sliver of space to slip into. Y/n relinquished her grip on Drew’s hand, but he stayed close, his chest practically bumping up against hers in the close quarters. Y/n moved her hips, the music practically vibrating against her skin, while Drew swayed side to side.

He looked practically edible under the flashing lights, and y/n found herself fighting the urge to reach out and drape her hands on his shoulders or kiss his flushed face. Sweat glistened against the sliver of his chest peeking out from beneath his unbuttoned shirt, his cheeks a bright pink as he watched her dancing in front of him.

He wasn’t sure he’d ever seen anyone or anything so beautiful as her right now. The dress that wrapped around her body perfectly, the wisps of hair curling in front of her face, the wide smile spread across her lips, the way she sang the lyrics so gleefully.

Drew’s mouth parted slightly, his gaze flicking down to the curve of her lips. He wanted to spill it all right now. Tell her all the feelings he’d been holding back for so long. Tell her how he found himself struggling to function when she was with him, the whole world fading away until all he could think about was her.

Just as he went to speak, someone brushed against y/n’s back, pushing her into Drew. With a squeak, y/n’s hands shot out and pressed against Drew’s chest. At the same time, Drew’s hands fell to her hips.

“Sorry.” Y/n murmured, swallowing harshly as she stood so closely to Drew. His fingers involuntarily curled into the fabric of her hips.

“It’s ok.” Drew whispered, his face so close to y/n’s she could feel the warmth of his breath against her skin.

Maybe it was the alcohol coursing through their veins or the way their hands were on each other, but they could feel their carefully drawn line of “just friends” begin to blur as they both moved at the same time, their lips meeting in a drunken kiss. Drew tasted of whiskey as y/n squeezed her eyes tightly, attempting to memorize every second before Drew abruptly pulled away. 

His eyes were wide, lips slightly swollen as he looked at her. He wanted so badly to kiss her again, to taste her lip gloss and feel the curve of her lip he had traced in his mind so many times, but she was drunk. He was drunk.

“I– I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have— ” Y/n stammered, letting her hands fall from Drew’s chest. His eyes remained almost pained as he removed his hands from her hips.

“I’m sorry—” Drew stuttered, taking in a deep inhale as he ran a hand through his hair.

“I– It’s ok.” Y/n swallowed harshly. “We’re… just drunk, it doesn’t have to mean anything.”

Y/n’s stomach churned at her own words, the lie coming from her lips in a way that bordered on painful. She didn’t want to hurt Drew, force her feelings on him when they weren’t reciprocated, so she lied and said it didn’t mean anything… even if it did.

Drew nodded quietly, his own heart practically breaking at the fact y/n clearly didn’t feel the same way about him as he felt about her, so he lied and agreed that it didn’t mean anything… even if it did.
