So I know I'm like several years late to the party with this, I just played it for the first time recently, but for those in this F/F discourse who like me, their big stumbling block with a lot of F/F fanfic is that they're specifically into messier, kinkier or more "toxic" dynamics between women than the romantic friends-to-lovers fluff that seems to predominate these days (though considering this is a common complaint, is probably already on the way out): cannot recommend the visual novel Ladykiller in a Bind enough. Especially the route with the Beauty - not gonna spoil, but you'll have fun, at least if you're not totally turned off by BDSM.

Anyway, has anyone noticed that it feels like even if F/F fandom is moving away from the fluff-only stuff, a lot of people who sign up for F/F in fanfic exchanges seem to be realllllly fluffy in their preferences? Like even in a lot of kink-centric ones (like kink in the BDSM/fetish sense, not the way fanfic uses it as just "trope you like"), it's a lot of stuff like that "consensual sex pollen" thing people were ranting about a few asks ago. I feel like the only way I can get the kind of F/F I really like in exchanges is if I get like five of my like-minded friends to sign up, and then we either end up just writing for each other, or are writing and receiving some M/M or F/M ship we also requested.

I sometimes wonder, because this is a trajectory that I went through myself and have seen so many other lesbians and bi women go through, that it has to do with comfort level about your sexuality. Like I was kind of afraid when first coming out to admit the freakier, less "good representation" style stuff I liked, and then once I got over it I was like making up for lost time. Especially when it seems like a lot of people with those preferences also buy heavily into "anti" thinking (like people have discussed with the Rhaenicent stuff), I do kind of wonder if it's motivated by shame in your less "moral "desires. THough obviously a lot of people just like fluffier stuff naturally and can process all they want and that's still goign to be what they like. I tend to have fluffier, more romantic preferences in M/M for whatever reason and all the processing in the world hasn't made me more want to read whumpier or kinkier fic.

(I'm a lesbian, ftr, and again I don't wnat to seem like I'm shaming anyone else, but I have kind of wondered what it means that /I/ am into one thing with the gender I'm actually attracted to IRL and one thing very different with the one I'm not. And then my preferences in F/M seem to be a lot more situational, depending on the ship or the fandom in question or the fanfic writer, etc.)

Also wondering if even more generally, what y'all have noticed is the difference in the overall patterns of preferences of people who sign up for fanfic exchanges vs. fanfic writers as a whole. As someone who does a lot of exchanges, it's something I've kind of wondered about in myself, too, especially compared to my friends who aren't as into them as much.

As someone who is violently transgender & androgynous, binary gender is more of a struggle to authentically write for me, but I'll do my best! Worst comes to worst, it might just be more subtle.

hey there! ur one of my favvv authors and i love getting your updates! (Loved the most recent update of the stars and their children, Wilbur coming across mean despite his best intentions is one of my fav characterisations, I love imperfect protagonists so much).

Anyway, I was just wondering if you knew any other wilbur centric, or at least crimeboys centric authors?

I love writing wilbur in stars, he's such a bitch and he kind of means it, kind of doesn't. it's a mix of him being naturally petty and bitter but also knowing you make more friends with honey compared to vinegar. also, mood to the projecting thing lmao. although I love writing both crimeboys, I do have a preference for writing wilbur partially because I can project more of the existential dread of being in my twenties onto him compared to tommy

anyway yes yes I love giving recs. okay, so while not all of these are wilbur/crimeboys exclusive, these authors all have multiple great works that are wilbur/crimeboys centric

bari_astralis - has written a lot of really cute crimeboys stuff especially recently, REALLY funny author who nails characterizations and manages to balance humor and fluff extremely well

Zannolin - it would be a crime not to include zanna on this list. very based wilburian who writes a ton of really great wilbur-centric stuff, especially crimeboys. planetarium stickers by her is so great highly recommend

birdfeet - i feel like black honey should be required reading for every crimeboys enjoyer out there. bird has FANTASTIC characterization for both wilbur and tommy and writes just the dynamics and dialogue so fucking well. definitely check out their stuff!

Summary: A series exploring Obi-Wan and Ahsoka's relationship as Grandmaster and Grandpadawan.

Okay, so this is one of the first fics I can genuinely remember reading with a heavy emphasis on the relationship between Obi-Wan and Ahsoka where I was like 'hey oh my god I love them?’ It was a monumental moment for me because now I am so obscenely ride or die for them and I truly do think back to this fic often with utter fondness. 

A moment I loved: 

“From a certain point of view,” he finally conceded, motioning her to start again. “At least I know you’ve learned something from me!”

“Well I couldn’t learn the secrets of your hair routine!”

A little bit of sith!Obi-Wan? As a treat? Hm, well...all right!!!!! I don’t want to say too much here because I would really prefer you read it than read any more of my mindless babbling but–it’s good.

A moment I loved: 

He can hardly think around the smothering darkness that has so wholly encompassed his master, so effectively destroying the light that has always been. He’s always been able to reach for it at the worst of times. Now he can’t feel it at all.

a time to say goodbye by Sokaless

Summary: Ezra isn't the only one facing the temptation of change in the World Between Worlds. Just minutes after facing Vader, Ahsoka falls through a portal seventeen years into the past and must relive her final encounter with Anakin and Obi-Wan without drastically altering the future. But Anakin Skywalker taught her many things. How to push her luck was one of them.

This is a short and sweet time-travel fic that finds Ahsoka back in that moment in the hangar with Anakin right before they unknowingly have their last goodbye. She knows more now than she did before and struggles not to say it all. But the theme of learning from loss is really special and powerful and I feel this sad sort of closure when I finish (I say that actively because I have...read this fic several several times). Painful, poignant–all the best things.

A moment I loved:

One last thing she learned from Anakin- teaching a lesson often requires holding your student to higher standards than you hold yourself. 

With the knowledge that she’s holding him to a standard she herself might never reach, Ahsoka tells Ezra, “I’m asking you to let go.”

Summary: “You look miserable.” Ahsoka dropped her hand, spun around. Obi-Wan stood behind her, one arm carrying a cloak and the other half-extended to Ahsoka. [or: After she leaves the Order, Ahsoka has one last encounter with Obi-Wan.]

Let’s see how many of Caroline’s fics I can get away with posting before someone reports me. This one-shot is full of all the good post-wrong jedi stuff. Soka and Obi have a conversation at Dex’s that hurts a lot but also feels real and I will never not respect Caroline for understanding the nuances of the disaster trios intricate and intimate relationships with each other and how they shift and mold around different circumstances. This feels so authentically them that it hurts.

A moment I loved: 

What came out instead was a small, half-choked sound.

When Obi-Wan opened his arms, Ahsoka fell right into them. “It hurts,” Ahsoka said, her voice cracking. “A lot.”

“I know,” Obi-Wan replied thickly. “We’ll take care of it.”

You Haunt All My What-Ifs by @kckenobi

Summary: But then she saw the way Obi-Wan’s lip was quivering, and his eyes were shining, and she realized— He hadn’t called because he needed to tell her. He’d called because he needed her. “Obi-Wan,” she breathed. “Oh, Obi-Wan…” And she wanted to reach out, to hold him. To be his refuge, his shelter, his home. Instead she just watched as he shook his head, palmed at his eyes, apologized. She reached out. Touched the hologram. One of the first fics that got me on my Obitine grind!! Just the right mix of angst and angst to create the perfect recipe of absolute sorrow. These characters feel so real I could reach out and hug them–and oh, how I want to after this incredible little fic.

A moment I loved:

And then suddenly she was thinking of every little what if—the other paths they could’ve taken, the millions of ways they could’ve ended up here. She imagined a future where he’d stayed. She saw white weddings, crying infants, painting nursery rhymes on a pale bedroom wall. She saw herself rolling over in the middle of the night, bumping shoulders, feeling his warm breath on her face. She saw family dinners, rushed breakfasts as they hurried the kids off to school. She saw laughter. She saw a lifetime. And at the end, she saw herself old and gray, holding his hand, his eyes the last thing she’d ever see.They had arrived at the end now. But she was not old and gray.

Summary: Anakin is trapped beneath a collapsed building, and has one final conversation with Obi-Wan.

One of my favourite febuwhump contributions from within the mountain of wonderful fics that the second month of the year created!! Some good ol classic Obi & Ani pain. Hint of a deathfic...but mostly just the moments leading up to it. And they...hurt. Also!!! Melanie took the care to make Anakin’s final words be about Obi-Wan, which is very special to me for the reason she includes in her author’s note.

A moment I loved:

“And,” he said, “if you ever see Ahsoka again, tell her she was the best padawan I could have asked for.” His breaths were coming in rapid pants, now, and the room was spinning out of focus. “Obi-Wan?” he asked, voice barely audible. “Yes, Padawan mine?” he responded, his own voice shaky as well. “Thank you for being my Master,” Anakin said.

A moment I loved:

Making their way to the cockpit, Ahsoka tilts her head into Obi-Wan’s general direction and says: “You know, Master, Anakin would probably think things so far have gone excellently.” Obi-Wan returns her look and sighs.

“Now you surely must get why I am so worried about this.” Ahsoka grins and gestures back and forth in the empty space between them with one hand.

“For what it’s worth, I think we make a good enough team.”

Summary: Master Depa Billaba and Padawan Caleb Dume.

Windu worries for them, out in the wider galaxy. Waging war, while he and Anakin sit here, waiting.

But he trained Billaba, and Billaba is training Dume. Anakin once took lessons from her, when he himself was a Padawan, and he knows she is skilled enough by far, to ensure that both she and her student make it back to Coruscant safely.

It’s ironic, that when cut off from the Force he can understand other people better than he has in years.

ZOWEE!!!! This fic made me ugly cry on my conference period at school!! Ha! Another fic that culminates in, er...death. But!!!! The lead-up! Ooh, baby! The writing style of this one is also very fresh and unique which I appreciate as someone who essentially reads the same thing eight million ways (by choice, mind you!!!! and loves it every time!!!!). This is just an absolute gem of a fic. Queue: your best crying playlist.

A moment I loved: 

Depa, her Padawan braid hanging from her shoulder, hugs him around his middle and drags him to the training salles. The whole way, her laughter follows them– warm, like summer rain. Like the smallest, most ephemeral moments of happiness.

Her smile feels like a sunset on his back, and Mace smiles back even as they spar, as green and purple clash over and over again in a dance unique to teacher and student.

He does not need to reach out to know the galaxy is at peace. Caroline at it again with the post-wrong-jedi disaster trio angst comin’ in hot! Some platonic bed-sharing, some confused Anakin, some conflicted Ahsoka, some pained Obi-Wan. Well–strike that. They’re all in pain. But what do we expect, honestly? What do we want, honestly? Pain. We want pain.

Hello ms Sav! I've been following you for quite some time and have been reading almost all of your works and I really admire you as a person and of course as a writer which is why I wanted to share this idea I had with you. If you'd be so kind and give me your honest opinion it would mean the world!!

Recently I had been thinking of writing a levihan family centric fic post 139. It isn't canon compliant more like alternate ending thus Hange is still alive and the premise was how the relationship progressed thereafter and also switches between curent time and forward to the snk equivallent of the 60s with their grown up daughter having to deal with the consequences of the unconventional parenting she experienced and the slightly dysfunctional and strained relationship she has with their parents. It is very angsty because Levi and Hange have a weird dynamic, like they're exclusive to each other but they themselves hold back on things, and their daughter -who was an accident- feels weird because her parents despite being loving as much as they could they had a lot of emotional baggage that never got resolved. It's a little heavy because I try to be as realistic as possible in what two worn out almost 40 yos soldiers with tons of trauma would be in a family setting. Like, heavens no they weren't abuse or cruel but based on their lives and past experiences they wouldnt be the most perfect parents ig. It touches upon how their angsty and what started as friends with benefits and fucking to feel something relationship evolved slowly to a unique kind of love with frequent ups and downs hindered by Levi's previous attachment to Erwin, survivor's guilt and depression catching up, Hange's ptsd and equal survivor's guilt and them slowly healing but also how this healing journey had negative effects on their daughter who was a quiet observer. And of course her getting involved with the princess isn't a small matter and yet another challenge for her to deal with. It's actually in the end a healing journey for the whole family ngl, there's a lot to unpack and I try to be as meticulous as I can with their characterizations. There's generational trauma passing, strained romantic relationships, strained parent-child relationships, lgbtq+ themes, kinda fix it with armin becoming a succesful diplomat whose efforts guaranteed Paradís peace with the rest of the world and jean as commander who strives to bring military reformation while also the development of his relationship with mikasa.

I am not completely sure if I even explained it well but it's very emotional and angsty and heavy and I'm not sure if anyone would wanna read that?? What's your opinion and maybe commentary or critique of this idea? Should I proceed?

Thank you for sharing your ideas with me. I'm honestly touched you trust me enough to ask for my opinion on this.

First things first, before I get into sharing my opinion, I want to point something out.

All fics, all types of fanart deserve a place in this world and ao3 was created as a safe space to house ALL these ideas so regardless if someone thinks something is the worst idea or the best idea in the world, I think it has the right to exist and it has the right to be posted, as long as the right warnings are in place.

I'm not a fan of puritan culture really lmao so I just have to say, feel free to go wild with your ideas and your interpretations of Levi and Hange.

I think your idea is very realistic and very interesting. I personally love angsty fics, particularly those that explore these types of issues so I would be happy to read it. Don't stop yourself from writing Levi and Hange that way. Personally, I believe that everyone in this world has a part of them that is problematic and it will be interesting to see how you will interpret that problematic side of both Levi and Hange.

As an angst fan, and as someone who likes to explore psychological issues, I woudl be pretty excited to read your fic.

I've written a lot of heavy stuff lmao too and as someone who prefers it to fluff, I'd love to see how you deep dive into this.

126 862. Which is, frankly, more than I thought. I think it’s grown quite a bit in 2021, to be fair.

7, according to AO3. One is an original work, so I guess 6? Except Far Cry 4 and 5 are considered different by AO3, as are Persona 2 and 5. I personally consider it like 4 or 5 fandoms.

Silence is a Virtue and IWAJWAV are both multi chapter fics at 23.6k and 19.2k, respectively. sybe (syn), moacm, and undercurrent are all part of the same series of short fics and range from 4.4k (unfinished) to 7k. Lost. is a theoretical first chapter of a multi chapter fic. 4/6 fics are ATLA, 1 is Far Cry, 1 is PJO.

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

Yeah! I used to not because I’m incredibly awkward about it, but when I started commenting on fics myself and realized how nice it is when the author replies, I started doing it myself. I really enjoy recognizing regular commenters. I just need to stop talking so much about worldbuilding and hinting at stuff in my replies, I think ^^’.

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Hm. Probably either what is a legacy to a dead man (it is worth far more to those still living) or Shattered Porcelain. The former is most likely more angsty to readers, but the latter holds a special place in my mind because I know my OCs intimately well.

7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Most of them, to be honest. I am, at my core, a fluff writer, even if I also enjoy throwing in sprinkles of angst every so often. The entire the dragon king series is going to end pretty happy if it goes according to plan. If I had to pick a finished fic then probably Apricot Blossoms— it’s just sweet kids in love, you barely notice the darkness on the horizon.

8) Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

Kinda? Sorta? Not really? Two of my published fics are crossovers but they’re like, crossovers within the same extended fandom.

Oh, wait, that one fic I wrote and published when I was 11 was a weird Harry Potter and mild Avengers crossover. So yeah, I guess.

9) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not really, no. I occupy a pretty niche area in all the fandoms I write in, so you kind of have to search out the content I make. I’m also not popular at all in the grand scheme of things, which I’m mildly thankful for. I have some popular fic writers as friends and I see some of their commenters sometimes.

10) Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I guess? It’s not something I make a habit of, I just in general am not that horny, but I have one published smutfic on AO3 and a ficlet on Tumblr that, if it isn’t really classified as smutc definitely is close. The smut I write is pretty soft and loving and is exclusively LuZhao so far.

11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not as far as I know.

12) Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope. If someone wants to I’m all for it, and theoretically I could translate my own fics into two other languages, but if there isn’t a demand there wouldn’t be much purpose other than me practicing. Who knows though, maybe one of my fics on my account will show up translated into French or Norwegian by me. Or maybe Russian, but that would be an effort. My Russian... isn’t great.

13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Currently (kinda, fixing my laptop has made it take a hot second) co-writing an OC centric fic with @theboyfrommakapu. I also betaread two of @izzymrdb’s fics, and she called me their coauthor in a comment once so... I guess that counts? I also had plans to make a massive crossover with my own fic and two of my friends but then I fell out of PJO and into ATLA pretty hard.

14) What’s your all-time favorite ship?

LuZhao, definitely. I’ve just created enough stuff around it to make it my favourite. I’m also quite fond of Jastavian in the realm of PJO.

15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I fully intend to finish my two main multichapter fics eventually, but I doubt I’ll ever finish Butterfly Kisses. Especially to the extent I have it in my mind.

16) What are your writing strengths?

Uh... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe worldbuilding within an established world? I actually prefer AUs to canon compliance, but when I want something to be canon compliant then I will make sure that it is as fully canon compliant as possible (or, to the extent that canon doesn’t contradict itself). For example, at the moment all of my OCs are completely canon compliant. If I somehow were asked to publish them, they would not contradict any existing work. I put a lot of work into my OCs and worldbuilding and it definitely shows.

17) What are your writing weaknesses?

If you asked my girlfriend? My paragraphs are too long and I don’t know how to use commas. She’s right about that, of course.

If you asked me? I’d probably say something a little more vague. I’m bad at the whole “communicating just enough” aspect of writing (and of life). I tend to get absorbed by my worldbuilding and want to tell everyone every little detail, which makes no sense because you don’t need to know it for the fic’s promises.

18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

So long as a translation is provided, I see no issue if it’s accurate. One of my first fandoms was Hetalia so... yeah.

19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?

I’m not sure if it was Harry Potter, Sherlock, or Hetalia. But it was definitely one of those three and I was about 10 when I wrote it.

20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Surprisingly I haven’t mentioned it so far, but solntse moye / luna moya. Azulon and Ilah have a relationship I really like, and they both have such distinct inner voices.

Celes travels in the saved world?

While I don't have anything particular in mind here, I'm all about the mood for Metroid and would appreciate really leaning on the atmosphere and environmental aspects--either more lush areas (eg Brinstar, Tallon IV landing area) but still isolating, or the darker more tense places. I'm particularly fond of Super Metroid and Metriod Prime.

Any singular focus on one of the above three or some combo is good.

Regarding the manga: I know next to nothing about it, so light referencing without needed knowledge is fine; anything deeper than that please avoid?

Explore the legend of El Pollo Diablo in some way. What do the chickens get up to now they roam free across Puerto Pollo? What oh-so-nefarious schemes is Murray up to now? A feral chicken demonic skull team-up?? I mean, that’s kinda close to El Pollo Diablo right???

This is coming off as Curse of Monkey Island-centric (it is my favourite) but it doesn’t have to be. It’s just because of the chickens… and Murray. But mainly chickens. Anytime from the previous games, or future or off to the side is good too.

I love the group dynamics! Party fun times while they’re travelling would be good. Really interested in more with Leif’s situation because that is a Lot and open to more introspection and dealing–Kabbu support go? Attempted Vi support go? Chompy being the best plant she can be? Snuggle that plant during hard times?

Exploring that lab more and cordyceps is welcome for the creepier end of things. Same with the Giant’s Lair and what IS that giant eye?

There’s also an interesting connection between Elizant II and Leif I’d be interested in seeing more. Leif’s out of his time but holds memories of Elizant I. Elizant II is a more direct connection he’s otherwise lacking and it’s nice to see how his opinion of her shifts and grows as she grows.

Alfin, Olivier, Priscilla: The Arnors have it rough dammit. Some soft moment for any combo of these three? Reunions after Olivier comes back and isn’t dead? We were deprived! Entertaining sibling times. A Priscilla bonding moment with Olivier when he was still getting used to living in the palace. And of course individually they’re interesting in their own roles and I’m always down for more.

Mueller: Of course anything with Olivier is good in my books. I’m running under the assumption that since he shows up with Olivier in the triumphant not-dead return, that he wound up at Valleria while Olivier recovered and I would be very soft for any moment taking placing during that time period. But when it comes to those two sky’s the limit. I’m good with platonic or ship. Mueller having some interaction with either Priscilla or Alfin would be great too!

Valimar: Given his history and knowledge it’d be interesting to see a conversation with Olivier or Alfin given also their family name Cedric’s positioning and, well, all the history there. Alternatively I love his interactions with Mint and how respectful of her he is, so anything between those two yes please. Or just something exploring him by himself in some way would be cool too.

Mint: I’m particularly interested in her during CS III and IV times and with Valimar as above. However, any Mint shenanigans is a fun time. She’s doing her best!

100 Days of Writing: Day Eighty

Only took a couple days off this time, not two weeks--pretty good!

Day 78: Fanfic or original, which fandoms/genres do you like to write?

I think I’m pretty diverse in my genre preferences, at least in terms of “fanfic genres.” I’ve written fluff, angst, canon-verse, modern AU (adult/college/high school). I’ve written horror. The nature of the fandoms I’ve been in means that I’ve written sci fi. I’ve tried a little bit of adventure-type stories (at least if you define ‘adventure’ broadly enough lol) and some supernatural-type stories, also. I even wrote a Western (thanks Troped), which was a lot of fun!

I have been trying to expand myself more the last couple years. I’ve been in my current fandom for a LONG time, and I’ve written a lot of fairly typical romance-centric stories within it. That was starting to bore me. Funnily enough, my creative goal for 2020 was “be weirder”—but then…everything happened… and I could barely write at all, so the goal switched to ‘write whatever you can and whatever feels good.’ Then at some point I adjusted course to wanting to finish my WIPs and old projects, not specifically with an intent to settle my accounts before leaving the fandom but… just for the clarity of it. That goal aside, though, I am trying to push myself to write things I haven’t written before and to make more unusual and bolder choices.

I know that the total number of genres out there is way greater than the number of genres I’ve even dabbled in. But I think I’m pretty varied, again, as far as the styles/genres/plot-types that tend to be common in fandom spaces go.

(The way I answered this makes Day 79 impossible to answer, so I’ll just be skipping that one. Also if you haven’t noticed I’ve been skipping all the ‘homework’ questions. My to-do list is long enough already!)

Day 80: How do you feel about your old works? And bonus homework: say something nice about past-writer-you.

I feel pretty good about them! Roughly speaking, I’m generally proudest of my recent works, or at least my recent faves, and also proud of my older work, the stories I don’t feel much attachment to anymore. About those I can at least say ‘wow, this is really good for someone X age,’ and even sometimes ‘yeah, this is just really nice!’ without any qualifiers. The works that fall in between those two categories I am harsher on. By that I mean, those stories that were written long enough ago that I can see how I’ve improved, but not so long ago that I don’t feel attached to that person anymore, where I still feel responsible, as it were, for the errors or rough spots in them. I’m especially harsh on stories that USED to be my favorites, for whatever reason. Even then, I’m talking about being more nitpicky, not about despising the stories or wishing I hadn’t written them or wanting to take them down.

All of this is just the general pattern of my thoughts. I have specific works that I think are bad, or at least kind of embarrassing or silly, works I can’t personally stand to re-read. But it’s a question of scale. I’ve been posting online since 2006 and have over 200 works on AO3. About the ones I don’t personally like, I think, ‘well if someone else reads it and likes it, it’s worth the story existing and existing in public.’

Plus the super-SUPER embarrassing stuff, the late elementary/early middle school original novellas, the early fandom stuff, almost everything I wrote in high school even (I’m the class of ’07) is only on my computer and on various back up drives.

I guess the tl;dr of it is that I’m proud of my writing overall, even if my exact opinions about specific stories, fandom experiences, or eras might vary. I think I’ve always had some kinda talent! It’s good that I’ve changed and grown, and hopefully improved, but I still feel fondness for my early writing experiences.

A Writing Update

Since I haven’t done one of these in a while…

I’ve finished my Troped fic, which took over my brain for longer than intended, and done a first editing read-through. There’s one scene with some VERY rough bits that will need to be worked on more, and since some of my read-through was a bit… quick, because I just got excited to read ahead and didn’t think as critically as I should, I think I should do another full start-to-finish read. I don’t want to forecast too specifically when it might be up, which would just make it even LESS anonymous, but I can say pretty confidently that it WILL be eligible for the competition.

So I’m pretty excited for that. I’m not sure what I’ll turn to next. What I probably should do is switch to autumn mode—I have a pretty big list of stuff I want to write this fall, although so far I’m not inspired at all because it’s still way too hot! So I think my first task this weekend is going to be to figure out where my focus should turn next.

five facts

i’m a reporter for my school newspaper

my energy level fluctuates a lot and that can usually be seen in my writing, if i’m feeling too high-energy i’ll play a high-energy character or if i’m feeling slow and lethargic i’ll play an easy-going or slow paced character. if it’s neither then i’ll play more complex characters !  i love all my characters but i really like when i’m at a regular energy level, roleplay is always more fun when i’m feeling like that

pretty much the only thing i can’t roleplay is really heavy gore, i can’t see it or read it as described in detail.  i’ve tried but it doesn’t end good :(  so i just steer clear of it most the time.

my favorite type of roleplaying is if i’m roleplaying a cartoon character and i can make them do cartoon things in roleplay like pronouncing the WHAM when they hit the floor or something like that.  spider - ham honestly was one of my favorite to roleplay just for that reason ( though i wasn’t the best at portraying him, sorry hammy )

how long ( month / year ) :  since about 2013 ish ? about 6 years platforms you’ve used :  kik was my OG, i used tumblr for a while but got too overwhelmed with too many rp partners at once.  i usually just roleplay on roblox or discord now best experience :  the few stable long-term roleplay partners i’ve come into contact with :  rosie, dusty, & damien.  i find one-on-one with individuals is better than a group thing for me, i get too overwhelmed with too many people to rp with at once unless it’s like 1-liners, or short paragraphs or something !

fluff/angst/smut :  definitely both !  i usually am heavy on angst for large plotlines or backstory and such, or to develop plot further, but i love soft little fluffy moments as well. :) i like reading back on those a whole lot.

plots or memes :  i like memes more if we’re doing fluff or less plot-centric stuff !  sometimes it’s good for angst but most of the time for angst i like plotting it out ... though i do like a good surprise every once and a while !  so ... just both. 

long or short replies :  usually i enjoy longer replies or at least replies in the mid range, but when i’m with multiple rp partners at once it HAS to be short replies.  ( i definitely prefer one-on-one, though, it’s easier for me to manage ! )  i also have difficulty keeping a roleplay going if we don’t do it in sessions:  not because i’m not interested, but because i lose energy or motivation for it, so it’s better to do scenes in one shot or shots spread across over a while.

best time to write :  nighttime !  or when i’m generally feeling good.  i like to roleplay when i’m not feeling good, but that doesn’t really make for the best roleplays :(

First things first, tell us a little about yourself.

Amy, 30s, California, she/her.

How long have you been writing for?

15+ years. I started by writing little ficlets to make my friends laugh in a tiny fandom. Besides a few of things on LiveJournal, I didn’t start posting publicly until around two years ago.  

What inspired you to start writing for The Magicians?

I finished the book series and I wanted Quentin/Eliot endgame so I wrote a (relatively silly) ending to the book series that put them together. Around the same time, the Welters Challenge started and that seemed like fun and I jumped on in.

Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write? What it is about them that makes them your favourite?

I love writing Margo and Eliot because they both have such good lines, and I love their relationship. Josh is up there, too.

Do you have a preference for a particular season/point in time to write about?

My sweet spot in writing is generally non-canon, but I do love everything about the key quest.

Are you working on anything right now? Care to give us an idea about it?

So many things! I’m working on a Josh-centric one based on the tumblr post “a whole fic where one of the characters is a food blogger and it’s formatted like online recipes” and it’s been fun trying to write in Josh’s voice. My focus for the next month is for my timeline in the 39 Graves project.

How long is your “to do list”?

Impossibly long. Five things I’m actively working on in this fandom, and about the same that are only a few lines of an idea that I might get around to someday. (And a dozen more stories in four other fandoms.)

What is your favourite fic that you’ve written for The Magicians? Why?

My favorite is “All's fair in love and war” because I spent so much time reworking it before I finally got it to the place I wanted it. I tend to give up on stories if I can’t get a decent first draft finished, so actually making myself figure out why it wasn’t working and fixing it was a big step as a writer for me.

Many writers have a fic that they are passionate about that doesn’t get the reception from the fandom that they hoped for. Do you have a fic you would like more people to read and appreciate?

I looked at my stats and was surprised “Moonlight” has so few hits; I think the people who liked that one really liked it, and I recieved so much good feedback I assumed it was more popular than it is. (Honestly, once I post something, I barely think about it again because I’m focused on the next thing.)

What is your writing process like? Do you have any traditions or superstitions that you like to stick to when you’re writing?

I’m a stay at home mom these days, so if I have even 15 free minutes to myself during my mentally-on hours, I try to not procrastinate and do something for me, be it writing, reading, yoga, or crafting. I used to have a routine where I’d make a cup of coffee to start writing, but I finally had to admit to myself that coffee was making me more jittery than productive.

Do you write while the seasons are airing or do you prefer to wait for hiatus? How does the ongoing development of the canon influence and inspire your writing process?

Either. Being canon compliant isn’t something I’m concerned about, so I have no problem if something changes after I’ve published.

What has been the most challenging fic for you to write?

So far it’s my unpublished nanowrimo project, which is a retelling of the show as a high fantasy novel from Margo’s point of view. Fen is an important character in the story and I started with her similar to her Season 3 character, but I realized partway through that without seeing the growth she goes through, she’s not as interesting. I also won’t write about Julia being raped, but I can’t find the balance of writing a defining event where it’s bad without being cruel.

Are there any themes or tropes that you like particularly like to explore in your writing?

Even if I don’t explicitly state it, found family is what I’m all about. Especially for longer pieces, I am less interested in the interpersonal conflicts of a relationship and more interested in how the couple works together against outside conflicts.

Are there any writers that inspire your work? Fanfiction or otherwise?

Douglas Adams. Caity Weaver and Taffy Brodesser-Akner write the best celebrity profiles these days; I read their stuff to figure out how to write the details to show, not tell.

What are you currently reading? Fanfiction or otherwise?

I’ve just started Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel after multiple friends recommended it. Next will be to read some Terry Pratchett, who - besides Good Omens - I’ve somehow completely missed.

What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve ever been given?

You can’t fix nothing. Get the first draft written, no matter how terrible, and then you can make it better.

Are there any words or phrases you worry about overusing in your work?

“Just.” And my characters are always shrugging, nodding, and/or grinning.

What was the first fanfic that you wrote? Do you still have access to it?

I started by writing silly things in a tiny fandom for the amusement of a half-dozen friends, and luckily it has all disappeared.

This ballet was absolutely made for me, I swear.  Victorian vampires, Tchaikovsky, and a gothic heroine wooed by both an adorable hero and a sexy villain.  You can tell me stories about the characters I listed, or dive into the world of the story.  What exactly is the deal with the vampiric fairies?  How does Aurora deal with awakening in a new time, with a new being?  As far as shipping goes, I could enjoy creepy Caradoc/Aurora, sweet Leo/Aurora, or some kind of power play combination of all three.  I just want to revel in this world, so you should as well!

Hope: The Other Side of Adventure (characters: the Princess, the Hero, the Duke)

This iphone game broke my heart.  If you signed up for a different canon, I encourage you to check it out anyway- it’s free, despite the fakeout towards the end about adding a quarter.  It’s about what the kidnapped princess in old video games goes through while her hero goes on his adventure, and her growing despair, fear and anger feel so real.  You can show me more of that, or let me see what the hero is up to- is he fighting hard to save her while none of the secondary characters seem to grasp the severity of the situation, or is he fucking around collecting stars while she suffers?  And what’s the Duke’s angle on this?  Although I found out about this game via an article that said the princess really needed to listen to some Beyonce and get empowered, I don’t want that attitude- I certainly wouldn’t be able to break out of a locked castle by sheer empowerment.  I keep requesting this every year, and someday I’ll get it!

Frankenstein (Movies- Hammer) (characters: Victor Frankenstein, Elizabeth Lavenza

Peter Cushing as Hammer Frankenstein is my ultimate villain crush, and I’m really curious about his relationship with Elizabeth.  He more or less forced her into marriage, then neglected her on their wedding night.  What’s up with that?  We see him having an affair with the maid, and he did go to some effort to set all this up, so is he just only into sex when it’s somehow coercive?  And what’s with all his threats to have Elizabeth meet the Creature, only to save her when she actually does?  I’d love dark ship fic for this, but if that’s not where you want to go, just character studies for one or both of them would be fine.

Darkest Dungeon (character: Grave Robber)

My girl!  My beautiful snarky thieving girl!  Her dialogue and her backstory comic reveal her to be an impoverished noblewoman driven to crime by a man’s debts (either her husband or father, depending on how you interpret the comic) so you could play with that.  What if the Heir or Heiress is someone who knew her from the old days?  I personally ship her with either the Houndmaster (ex cop and ex criminal!) or the Highwayman/Dismas (ex criminals united!) but you don’t have to do that if it’s not your jam.  You could also just dramatize a funny incident that happened in a playthrough of yours, and I’m happy to see stuff from Crimson Court or Color of Madness if you want.

Also, silly idea, but I could go for a 20th century creepy small town Twin Peaks-y AU.  Use that or don’t, as you will!

Kushiel’s Legacy

My request this year is the same as last year, because I got such a great gift from this prompt: Night Court worldbuilding!  Show me your favorite House and what life is like there, either during sexual encounters or in downtime.  I’d be especially interested in what the Mandrake or Valerian houses are like for adepts who enjoy bdsm but don’t have Phaedre’s extreme masochism, but I’d also be happy to see just what the hell they do in Bryony or a magical Gentian encounter, or really anything.  I don’t like how this series handles Jewish and Romani people, so that’s my only real “don’t” there, but if you think you can handle those issues more sensitively then go for it.  You can use canon characters from the main trilogy or have the story entirely populated by OCs.  I tend to prefer m/f pairings, but it’s not the end-all be-all if it’s something else.

The Brides of Dracula (characters: Marianne Danielle, Van Helsing)

Peter Cushing as Hammer Van Helsing is my ultimate hero crush, and this movie is my favorite in the whole series.  I love the hints of his feelings for Marianne, and their embrace at the end warms my heart.  Given that he’s married with children in later movies, I always like to think that these two married after the events of Brides.  Tell me about them!  They can deal with trauma of their last encounter, have another run-in with Baron Meinster, meet the actual for-real Dracula, or even have normal cute fluff.  If you really don’t want to ship them, then I’ll take gen interactions- how about Marianne becoming his pupil in vampire hunting, or them having to cleanse the remaining town and school of Meinster’s progeny?
