oh my god i can’t believe there’s an in-game note that refers to cordyceps i thought they might be going for that but. woo validation i guess.
#alright so technically i was thinking ophiocordyceps. u know. The Ant One. but i never remember that first part. just cordyceps.#its interesting bc at least with ophiocordyceps unilateris#wait fuck. unilateralis?#it grows out the head#and while one of the in game corpses looked fungal it looked like it was growinf all around the body#one or two from an arm or a leg or the chest or face etc#but i dont know as much about other variations of cordyceps so maybe some of those emerge differently?#hang on lemme pause the game for an hour to do what really matters: fungus research

Fun fact: The fungus that causes the "Infection" in The Last of Us is actually based on cordyceps, specifically the species Ophiocordyceps unilateris or more commonly called "zombie-ant fungus".
On the bright side, one species of cordyceps, Cordyceps militaris, is used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Most cordyceps are entomopathogenic, meaning they infect insects till they die :D
What happens is that their spores latch on to the unfortunate insect (for example, an ant)
The fungus will then develop inside its host all while draining the host's nutrients. Once it nears its mature state, the fungus will send out signals in the host's brain. The host will then be compelled to climb on a vantage point that has the favorable microclimate that will help the fungus develop further.
The host will then anchor itself to that spot till it dies. Several days after the host dies, the fungus will sprout out of its host's body and spread its own spores. Then the cycle continues.
Hope that wasn't too graphic :D
One word: Cordyceps :)
Yes, I'm back. Still not done with school work but I'll manage... I think ⊙﹏⊙ *eyes my still-in-the-works research*
THE MIND CONTROLLING FUNGUS????? epic C:
i'm wishing you luck!!! im still filling out forms and shit for my school so i get it sigh
#a tea package with cordyceps as one of the tea's ingredients made me remember this fungus#this also reminds me of that time where i rambled off to my older sister about cordyceps after she mentioned the last of us#such good memories...#cookie's random rambles

Anyone else think of the The Last of Us? That ophiocordyceps unilateris is what turns the human population into the “infected?” i.e. these god-awful things?

I don’t think they’re meant to be a metaphor for love, but you do you Lenny.
I’m starting to wonder if she’s really the right girl for you. Legion | 1x06 “Chapter 6″
