Perler Bead Flight Flags

Made these flight flag coasters a bit back, figured it was a good time to post 'em! I do enjoy Perlers, they're like pixel art but at the end I can hold them and stuff.

Crafting details after the break, if y'all want to make your own.

These are using the original 2013 flag designs/colors on a 14x14 board, with standard 5mm beads. If you wanted to do the current flag designs, they'd need a little bit of tweaking as many are more symmetric in the current art (and also, I'd recommend a 16x16 size, since then you have room to put the current art's border). You could also try out an odd-sized flag, 15x15 maybe, but the angles at the bottom will look a little off. Doesn't hurt to try stuff though!

I got most of the beads for these out of variety packs and various kits, which don't necessarily label the colors in them, but these are my best guesses to what I used:

Earth: Tan design on Brown base

Fire: Butterscotch/Orange on Light Brown base

Wind: Dark Green on Kiwi Lime

Water: Light Blue on Dark Blue/Cobalt

Lightning: Toothpaste on Parrot Green

Ice: Turquoise on Robin's Egg

Light: Cheddar on Creme

Shadow: Pastel Lavender on Purple

Nature: Kiwi Lime on Dark green

Plague: Red on Cranapple

Arcane: Pink on Raspberry

(Most of these came from the Multi Mix packs or the Neutral Colors/Fun Colors trays, but Cranapple in particular was catankerous to get ahold of. Fitting for Plague, I suppose! Anyways, there's some wiggle room on hue for a lot of these, too, I was just using what I had onhand as much as possible)

As for what I would do differently if I made another set of these? Well... I've gotten a bit better at getting the melt level consistent, so there's that. Learned the hard way that trying to melt two designs on the same pegboard, even if said board is big, isn't a good idea (and it's near-impossible to fix). Also, I was using one of the freebie folded pieces of parchment paper, so some of the coasters have creases... On non-ironing notes, I think it would be fun to take a stab at a micro-bead variant, since they support a higher dpi and all!

Anyways, if you decide to make your own set, please uh... I'd say ping me, but I'm not actually sure how that works here? I think it'd be cool to see 'em, that's all. Happy crafting!

OK so in art we had to do a watercolor drawing of a single thing really zoomed in and I picked my converse cause I thought they looked cool. But mine are red and I didn't want to use one color for the whole picture so I wanted to find a way to make it colorful.

I asked a couple people and they gave me the idea to just do a bunch of different angles of converse with each one being a different color.

So I got the idea to make it ninjago themed!

Kai's shoe

-OK to be honest his was the most basic but the one I drew first and possibly the one that inspired the ninjago theme in the first place.

-so the flames are an obvious tie to his element and sorta self explanatory

-I was stuck on ideas though and it randomly struck me to make his scar included into his shoe as well and make it look ripped open!

-I chose the yellow laces cause he has a lot of yellow/gold accents on his gis and I thought it would fit better!

-I would definitely try to make his more interesting if I wasn't on a time crunch and got to think it out more

-thank you to rusty for hearing out my ideas for his!

Nya's shoe

-OK I think this one is really cute!

-I have the all star converse and since she has an ocean theme I decided to make it a star fish instead.

-I included her water form markings cause I think their really cool and they were fun to add!

-I think I did well with the colors and I like that I put 2 different shades of cyan instead of 1

-I really wouldn't change anything about this one and I think it's 1/2 solid ones I'm completely happy with :)

Cole's shoe

-So for him I did the bottom of my shoe cause I thought that the triangle diamond like markings could be colored to look like his lava markings he gets in his arms

-Originally that was all I was gonna do, but someone in class mentioned that it looked like a pineapple so I knew I had to switch it up lol.

-Since my shoe curved up at the top I decided to make it look like a volcano so it was more clear that the markings were supposed to look like lava since it was dripping into it.

-The bottom part was supposed to look like mountains but I forgot to outline it so it doesn't really look like it. (I'll definitely fix it when I get my paper back)

-This is the 2nd shoe that I think I'm completely happy with!

Zane's shoe

-This one gave me the most trouble to be honest

-I didn't have many ideas for what I could do with his outside of making the star into the snow flake symbol he has on his gi in the movie.

-While I was making it I decide to try and give elements that made it look like his og heart core in the show.

-I kinda wanted pixal to be included somehow and needed to make the shoe look more balanced so I added her markings on the side so that there was both parts of his heart on both parts of the shoe.

-The heel part was a last minute choice. I was trying to make it look like the gold head piece on all of the ninjas masks cause I thought it would look cool but the overall shape was a bit off.

-I think I should have left it there and made it just the solid gold piece but there was a square on the heel of my shoe that said the logo and stuff so I decided to include that and made it the birch forest that he unlocks his tree potential in.

-But idk it think it makes the shoe look all over the place

Jay's shoe

-So with his I ended up making the point of the shoe have lightning strikes on it

-I didn't know how to draw lightning or how I would go about outlining it so I left it where it was.

-I made the little metal pieces look like gears to reference his inventor past instead of just having regular ones.

-I added a quote on his that somehow got...smudged off? Huh I wonder why jay would smudge it off...

-The backround is also on Jay's shoe and his only. You could probably give that some sort of meaning but I was tired so i couldn't come up with a reason tbh

-Overall I wish I had done more with it like make the laces be in the shape of lightning or something but I was heavily focused on the refrence photo that I didn't think to do it since it was already too complicated in my eyes

Lloyd's shoe

-I made the star into the little design movie lloyd has on his gi cause i love him and thought it would be nice.

-And yellow laces!!

-Originally I was just gonna do some plant stuff with his (I didn't have any design ideas I just thought that the whole life = nature thing) but then I looked at my shoe for a second and I was like-

"Oh my shoe looks like the wing of a dragon!!"

-And I told some classmates that and they were so confused. And were just like "????" So I showed them a picture of my shoe that I drew on to show them my vision:

-They still didn't get it but I thought the idea was cool so I went with it anyway!

-The shoe anatomy is off but I really like the idea of it so it was fun to design which is good!

Garmadon/Wu's shoe

-So I knew that since there was a big chunk of space in the picture and I couldn't decided to either do garmadon (all the ninja +their enemy) or wu (all the ninja + their sensei aka the good side)

-I talked to coconut about it and they said that I could make one shoe that was Yin and yang with both of them!

-I thought that was really cool and wanted to do it but I realized that no matter what position I put the shoe in, it wouldn't fit that whole chunk of space. So I decided to make it a Frankenstein shoe!

-Wu and garmadon have their own shoe, but their's are stitched together, making both of their little star circles combine to make the yin and yang symbol!

-Underneath is both of their head pieces that I decided to make into an hour glass shape (representing their immortality but also the time twins situation)

-Then on the bottom part I made it wu's staff and a snake for garmadon with the white part having yellow and purple blend into eachother.

-I think this one is really nice.

Overall

I can see a lot of mistakes I made with this piece, rather that was design choices, line art mistakes or bad shoe anatomy there's definitely stuff I could fix if I ever decided to recreate this. But with this piece I realized something pretty important-

My art (and anything I do) doesn't have to be perfect for me to still feel proud of it. It doesn't have to be masterful or something that my teacher would show off to others to be happy about it. I think mine was pretty good for someone who's only done serious water color a handful of times and I took time and effort into this and tried my best and that's the best thing I could do. I'm happy with this!

you sat in one of the conference’s seats, it was a meeting about the publishing days for the team’s social media page, mainly instagram. you’re the team’s newest photographer, not just that but you freshly graduated from ucla with a minor in economics, a major in photography.

your camera gear was set on the table, different camera lenses were sorted in the bag, the camera itself, an extra storage card, two black camera straps and the other essentials.

you had anxiously tapped on your thigh, as you payed attention to the conversation. it didn’t take long for the meeting to end, and when it did—you gently carried your stuff.

it was international camp, as the uefa nation’s league was coming to a close. you grabbed the tripod already setting it up, as the schedule was coming to a close.

and as expected, the players had arrived. some were in a group of trios, duos or individual. you were behind the camera, as a few players took note of the newest staff.

you had a shy interior as you hid behind the camera while your co-staff had done the talking. occasionally, asking things how is it like at their club, or their weekend has been.

it was literally break when you were at the pitch, a co-worker was helping you set up the cameras as you were humming to yourself, not noticing a player looking at you with adoration.

she noticed your shy interior, how you would avoid conversations or eye contact with people. it was cute to her, she wanted to get to know you better. but she didn’t know how to.

little did she know, that she had caught your eye as well. your little brother is quite a fan of the team, and you would always get mixed up by the players.

but jackie really stood out to you, maybe it was her smile. the out-going vibe that she gave. you grabbed your camera, ready to take pictures after the players started piling out of the building.

quickly snapping a few pictures, you made sure the angle and lightning was okay. the pictures turned out perfectly, you looked through the camera, noticing a certain dutchie looking at you with a soft smile.

you had taken a picture, as you found the smile a bit charming. the whole training, you focused on the playing style, you had played high school football but never continued at college.

“come on, jackie.” daniëlle teased, trying to nudge the midfielder a bit closer to your direction. you were busy humming to yourself.

the day had came to an end and you were busy sorting through the camera gear, putting the things away not noticing the two players behind you.

“she’s busy-“ jackie didn’t finish her sentence as she was pushed by the other midfielder. she was just behind you, admiring the way you were focused.

she cleared her throat, but you didn’t hear it. jackie looked at danielle who shrugged.

“tap her shoulder!” danielle cheered, as jackie scoffed at how happy she was. she took a deep breath before gently tapping your shoulder.

you glanced back at her before placing the camera down, her eyes were looking into yours as you reached into your bag, getting a case.

as you opened it, a pair of hearing airs were revealed. yes—you needed hearing aids. did you use them? you do, but earlier your ears were hurting, hence you had removed them for a while.

you quickly put them on, giving her a timid smile—as her eyes widened in realization.

“yes?” you asked, as she cleared her throat for second time.

“hi, i’m jackie.” she introduced herself, her hand was held out as she had a toothy grin. you chuckled at her behavior, before returning the handshake.

“i’m y/n l/n. i’m sorry if you called me earlier, i had my hearing aids off.” you explained, as she hummed. it was a cute thing, despite this being the first time interacting with you, she loved how you rambled. or how you’d over-explain things.

“it’s fine, i didn’t really know. so, how’s your first day?” she asked, as she stepped beside you. analyzing the gear.

“it’s fine, my brother is a huge football fan.” you commented, as she asked for permission to grab on of your cameras. you gave her a soft nod, as she grabbed your nikon d780.

she turned the camera on before looking through the viewfinder of the camera.

“is he, then? who’s his favorite player?” jackie asked, as she snapped a few photos of the pitch, she turned the camera to danielle and a few of her teammates who dramatically posed.

“he really loves viv.” you chuckled remembering on how he’d ramble about the star striker, feeling a bit disbelief on how she would’ve retired at age 18.

“i’d see why.” she hummed, pointing the camera at you, quickly snapping a few pictures catching you off guard.

“hey!” you said, covering your face with your hand as she chuckled at how cute you looked like. you were shy, but you always preferred to be behind the camera and not in front of it.

little did you know, you had gotten out of your comfort zone in the future. jackie is and will always be your favorite photographer, she’d snap photos of you.

Where Evil Grows by The Poppy Family: this one I drew for, but I heavily think of it over Joseph and Wamuu's first meeting where despite the rough first meeting, theres that spark of interest in on another. Despite unexplainable need to get close to one another, especially Joseph to Wham.

Blood in the Wine by AURORA: mostly a song I put on there for Wham, its a Wham heavy song and makes me think generally of pillar fam but also of Wham and his relationship to his pillar men family and kars. His Loyalty and devotion to the man who is his father, but ultimately having these different goals and feelings.

Electric Love by BORNS: Honestly mostly just a fun feel good song I felt had some good vibes to Pillar fam, love a good lightning motif for Joseph.

Kiss her you fool by Kids that Fly: First kiss scene, 1000% Joseph with a million thoughts about how he's trying to get out of dying, or even killing but also quickly realizing he might just be in love with this powerful warrior and that Wham just might like him back, and to make a leap of fate with a kiss.

Talk to Much COIN: Another song that fit the bill for Pillar Fam especially of a Joseph angle for suuuure

High on Humans by Oh Wonder: I think this is pretty straight forward for the wham angle of this relationship, especially when Suzi starts being in the mix and he's realizing he's soft for two humans who he should be seeing as a threat to Kar's mission. but instead his brain if fuzzy and soft around them

The Sex has Made me Stupid by Robots in Disguise: also pretty straight forward, they were going at it like rabbits because i take Wham for a guy who fucks his enemies as an equal partner for him, fighting it like gay sex to him but so is gay sex lol. Also this song is such so extremely british its just a bit of a too fitting not to include

Dirty imbecile by The Happy Fits: Kinda vauge take on Joseph, i get big joseph vibes in this song and fitting to my minds touchings of his character and relationship to family and lack there of

Step With me by MIKA: its the vibes, the specific lyrics just feel so right, the slow set by set calculations of getting close to someone like Wham in their specific situation. Both in trying to work every angle to get everyone out alive, but also dealing with big feelings for a big man who may kill him. One step at a time, just a few steps away from you. I especially take this song overlay to the idea of the height of Pillar Fam when the month is almost up and joseph's one like asking of truce between him and wham, but wham choosing to stay to his word and to kars and leaving Joseph, but stubborn Joseph not giving up quite yet.

Necessary Evil by Unknown Mortal Orchestra: i think this in a way feels a lot like similar lyrical vibes to Where Evil Grows. But bit on the horny side lol, two crazy kids defying the odds, dealing with how they feel, messy messy feelings while they nearly kill each other in a gladiatorial fight on chariots around a roaring fire.

I wont hurt you by the West Coast Pop Art Experience: THIS SONG OUHGH this is one of the big ones on the playlist to me, its soo ouch. Song that 100% in my head links to the end of the Chariot fight. Joseph and Wham have dealt out all their cards, every trick in the book to live or win. All but their final trump card, all or nothing, put it all on the line and die winning. Wham lost of sight, arms and burning a hole into his own chest. Joseph with caesars headband and the lighter fluid... But he can't do it. instead opting to drop his weapons and his guards, i wont hurt you, Yelled over the intense slicing winds as they grow nearer. Joseph's pleading one more time for Wham to stop to not kill Joseph, but more importantly, himself. That Kars wouldnt want this, Suzi wouldnt want this and Joseph wouldnt want this. He would rather lay down and accept defeat and death than be the one to remove Wham from the world. its then, Wham in his biggest moment of vulnerability stops, words reaching him. Falling to his knees and embracing Joseph in a messy bloody puddle in all the heavy silence under the blazing fire. I wont hurt you.

m'Lover by Kishi Bashi: themes of unlikely lovers? well dont mind if i do for my pillar fam playlist. Picking up right after the last one, things are finally looking right, defying the destiny that they were meant to hurt and kill each other in that pit that night instead promising themselves to each other. two loves in the night finding each other in the most unlikely way

Affection Taku Iwasaki: Its a jojo song, and it makes me sad weepy, its soft its perfect for this vibe.

Bizzare Love Triangle by New Order: I think mostly on here for the general title and 'love triangle' idea. Suzi and her two boys, their Bizzare Love Triangle

From Me, the Moon by Lav and Dark Moon by Bonnie Guitar: putting these together as their both meant to be for the same idea, Wham watching his human partners grow old. His family even with his pillar man genetics, growing older. The idea they will one day leave him behind. This reality will obviously never come as they world ends in p6. But its a lingering idea, a soft sad, but approachable topic to think about for Wham. Couldn't not include it in a playlist meant to encapsulate them and their life start to finish. Wham will be sad, but happily live out his humans long lives. As long as they'll have him.

Affection Taku Iwasaki: it was the final track of P2, just like Affection, sweet and good, how could i not make it the final track on this playlist.

(curiously the first screenshot with all of its early part icons and such doesnt have the placeholder verb icons, nor does it have two tabs in the part selection, but the energy bar is a lot older and placeholdery)

anyway. the part arrangement is different from final, with old and often differently angled part icons, and some of them even look consierably different

some part icons seem to NOT have been rerendered, but anyway

the order vertically changed from this to this, excuse the janky color coding

as for the parts themselves

warrior parts swapped Plasma Pulser and Missile Flinger (the early arrangement actually matches up more with the creature attacks they replace), the parts aside from the Lightning Striker look somewhat different and like theyve been extended with morph handles

shaman parts actually have Swarm Magnet come first. in fact all of the parts swapped places (and the early arrangement did NOT match the attacks they replace). the most obvious thing is that Toxic Crystal is blue instead of purple! purple conveys way better that it poisons your foes so i get the change. also the band was a coppery color instead of grey

scientist parts look about the same, same arrangement even, but seems like the power generator and battery parts (the right two) were rerendered

ecologist parts also look the exact same, not even rerendered

diplomat parts have the first two swap places, this time its the final part arrangement that actually matches the arrangement of the social moves they replace

bard parts were also rearranged in places (with only Fettipopper staying in the same place), Fettipopper and Hop Gogs were also modified with morph handles but the other two icons look identical. the final part order also matches the order of the moves they replace

trader parts used to look kind of unrendered, theyre in the same order though. the Stealth Helmet is colored somewhat differently (yelow bits instead of blue ones), and the wings on Jump Jet seemed to have a darker tip

zealot parts also look the same

for all of the captain part arrangements, it should be noted they largely match the internal order of the parts too

aside from the shaman parts even so these were arranged SEVERAL times

and on another note, the icon in the top left for selecting the expansion parts was just the spore logo previously, as in Core Spore for some reason, instead of the final's Galactic Adventures icon. i dont think this suggests anything but its weird

also theres the placeholder ui with 3 health icons and 2 speed icons. seems like the captain parts also didnt replace the icons of the creature parts, so Bladed Knuckles seems to still be using the bite icon

and Missile Flinger is represented by spit curiously enough, even though in final it replaces charge NOT spit (plasma pulser replaces spit). so the old part arrangement wasnt even in the same order as the moves either

anyway its pretty clear the second speed icon is meant to stand for the shielding icon, and im not sure whats going on with the 3 separate health icons on top of a completely separate energy bar, but some of the health icons probably do stand for the energy

also the energy bar is flatly colored, wider (since its not placed next to an energy regeneration counter) and has the text above it instead of on top of the bar

also ALSO. the trader parts themselves look different, unlike what the icons show. the bits on the helmet are blue but a different blue, and the glider pack has orange glowy stuff instead of light blue. why do the icons match the final color schemes and not the actual part icons?

also the jump jet does have a darker tip on the wings

also this is different. it also showed a military icon in the other newer ga screenshots, so this must have been changed fairly late

after god art style study --part 1

first off disclaimer I don't really know if there's a supposed professional/appropriate method of studying artist's art styles so please don't expect this to be polished or like a tutorial in any way this is just me spending a lot of time admiring eno sumi's art

thoughts overall

eno's art has a pretty semi-realism leaning anime art style. it's not conventionally cute, the level of detail is what you'd see in a seinen manga. thumbs up it works out just right

because this is manga with what looks like a monthly to biweekly release schedule yeah I too would want to be paid $$$$ as my full time job if I were drawing with that crunch deadline so shortcuts and corner cutting are taken to make the job easier. I particularly want to study some of the shortcuts in addition to the way she stylizes certain things in her art style.

I used to have a very cutesy/baby-faced anime art style and had really wanted to move more away from that to something more mature-looking. studying how an artist stylizes something is a cool way to figure out how you want to depict something in your style too. obviously still do take life studies and all... there is nuance between understanding how an artist builds on top of fundamentals versus copying plainly what is depicted. I know how to draw noses but I couldn't figure out or visualize how it'd best look in my artwork.

I personally cannot really discern perfectly if 3d models were ever used for posing the characters- if there was use of 3d character models then thank god they weren't directly traced over bc 3d does not translate to 2d well when it's directly traced over and that type of jarring uncanny proportions is what I'm used to seeing when that happens.

however, sometimes it is kinda noticable when the anatomy looks a little bit wonky or rushed. I don't blame it that much for comic making standards

they are more detailed than the typical "single dot/line" anime nose, I really appreciate that. the variety within the main characters isn't very wide, but I digress. if it's easy to draw then it's easy to draw and it's nice to feel no pressure drawing what you want to draw

the most common nose drawn is a line for the bridge and two lines indicating the nostrils. the two nostril lines may vary in direction depending on if you're viewing the face, differing angles from above or face from below

frequently, in addition to that, the tip of the nose is also defined.

sometimes the bridge is given some additional depth with some hatching instead of a singular line.

sometimes, only the nostrils are drawn. shading may be used to define the nose shape instead of using lineart.

sometimes instead of a line for the nose bridge, a "triangle" shine shape is drawn. usually it shows up on smaller images.

very rarely does it ever end up being drawn as a single line (either for the nose bridge OR the bottom of the nose).

the diversity of noses typically shows up the most on the older aged characters. or the non-japanese characters.

So I talked about godslaying magic here, in this post about Zancrow, and wrote it as having a lot to do with how psychotic and violent Zancrow is. I also happen to believe proto-dragonization has a lot to do with exacerbating the effects of Laxus' burgeoning mental breakdown that had its tipping point in the Fantasia arc. I also wrote that those negative effects feed into themselves the more the godslaying magic is used.

This poses problems for both of them, especially Orga, who doesn't have purely elemental lightning magic to fall back onto like Laxus, and is highly incentivized to use his magic frequently by the hype that sustains Sabertooth.

I think they'll have enough ease getting along just due to chemistry in their personalities, but needing help doesn't hurt, nor does:

These two probably bonded very very quickly. Not only were they all but flirting in the leadup to their GMG fight, but they both have a love of music that is very noticeable, like their punk aesthetics, and are very lowkey otherwise. Can Orga sing? Debatable. Will he be a hell of a lot of fun at karaoke? Yes.

I think their first fling happens relatively early into their friendship. Honestly a bit of a speed record for friends-to-friends-with-benefits. It was a natural course for them--they are the ultimate masc4masc fuckboi hookup.

And maybe it's through that fling that they discover something pretty useful; Dragonslaying magic and "godslaying" magic (corrupted/cursed dragonslaying magic) have an inherent opposing quality, almost like a positive and negative charge.

And by fighting each other and kissing each other, and just being around each other, they can temper their internal magic's discharge-like backlash that causes brain degeneration. Doctor approved!

No really they probably went to Porlyusica and she told them to keep hanging out.

This would also handily explain why corrupted brain degeneration isn't affecting Chelia either, since she hangs out with Wendy so much.

It's a slow thing, but that friends-with-benefits angle slowly deepens for them, especially with Orga, who originally thought of Laxus as just a very powerful mage in a powerful guild. Laxus may be something of a thug, but he's also well-read, introspective, and respects history, and it makes Orga want to improve himself.

Their fights get brutal. Not even arguments, because they rarely have them, but their sparring matches pursued just for fun. They are both very competitive, and unused to being challenged on an even footing. Orga actually being able to hurt Laxus makes up any difference in their power easily.

Laxus ends up with significant extents of lightning scars. Yeah yeah, Laxus with lightning scars, we've all seen those posts--but consider that a) Orga feels horrified when he sees them later and b) Laxus has to shout them down because he actually thinks they look sick as fuck and he loves them. They're dark, too, black like Orga's lightning before they fade to normal a few days later, so it's like getting more tattoos.

I like to think that Orga has a deeply-hidden romantic side. He's probably into cooking, has an instagram where he posts the supermodel equivalent of foodinsta, looking oh so delicious. He likes to write lyrics, too. Laxus gets into that stuff--he could sit for hours and watch Orga pore over a set of verses he wrote himself (and maybe even help) or watch him dither trying to make a three-hour meal for two people (and help because he feels guilty).

Orga's nickname in Sabertooth is "big bro" by the young'uns, or "uncle" when they feel like disrespecting him. When he officially becomes a thing with Laxus, this also extends to him, and much like they do with Cobra, Sting and Rogue slap Laxus with the big bro label.

When you spend that much time around another person, both because they heal you physically and because they heal you socially, you start to learn them. Every little intimate detail. For Laxus and Orga, that means not only learning each other's scent, but learning each other's "scent" (how they appear when being picked up via electroreception) and even how the other's lightning tends to sound when far away.

The instas go wiiiiiiild babey. The thirsty gays were already congregating around the two but when they start appearing in each other's stories??? Absolute hoe madness in the comments. The twinks are dying. Someone send help. Modeling contracts are flooding in. Constant requests to start an OF together.

Laxus is openly bisexual and Orga is openly gay, but neither one of them has ever been huge or loud about it. But they do go to their first Pride together, and it's a great experience for both of them. Orga in particular feels like he's being rewired in the best way being there.

This is my oc, Julian Damian Archer. He got the Storm Insight which grants him powers over the weather. He mostly uses lightning but he can use ice if he wants to. He’s a prince and has two older siblings. The oldest is Frances who is the heir to the kingdom and is the golden child. The middle child is Bartholomew who insists on being called Bart. Bart realised his parents sucked when he was quite young and decided he was just going to be as invisible as possible and move away as soon as he could. He went to a boarding school when he was 13. He felt bad about leaving Julian because he was painfully aware of Julian’s attempts to earn their parents’ love. Julian thought Frances was loved for being the heir so he tried desperately to prove how incompetent a ruler she would make. He studied from the early hours of the morning to the late hours of the night since he was six to become the perfect king. He was charming to those he deemed important enough to charm, he was intelligent and he was talented in many different areas. Alas, his parents still never gave him the attention he wanted so he decided around the time he was fourteen to go to the boarding school Bart went to. To his surprise, nobody knew there were two princes at the school and Bart had been pretending to be a normal guy who wasn’t noticeable in any way. He got a lot of attention for being the “only” prince there and had a lot of people try to get into his good graces so they can gain power and connections. He started off a bit egotistical but when he joins the Glow Seers nobody treats him like he’s some fantastical god among men. He’s just Yellow the annoying hot head of the team who’s only exceptional traits are his magic skills and how quickly he can get infuriated. At first he hated it but then he realised this was his first chance to be someone beyond Prince Julian. He could just be him and finally start to figure out he was without all the prestige and achievements.

Growing up the only people who could tell him what to do were his parents and he graciously listened to his tutors because most of them he deemed worthy of respect. However, since he was obsessed with comparison and felt inadequate compared to his sister, he became very classist and a massive asshole. He’s fifteen when he becomes a Glow Seer and it’s the first time he hangs out with kids who aren’t all wealthy nobles. He can’t be sure of that because of the whole secret identity stuff but judging by how they carried themselves and how they acted, he could guarantee everyone but maybe Purple and Orange were nowhere near his status. Over time, he came to respect his teammates and stopped judging people based off of their status and instead their character. From then on he distanced himself from a lot of people he once called friends. He also tried to reconnect with Bart but that goes… well Bart’s kind of going through getting possessed by a goddess withdrawals so it’s complicated but Bart does his best to also reach out.

I gave him Bakugou hair to show he’s the team hot head and I leaned more into the 70 s aesthetic for his costume. On the front of his jacket he has lighting bolt shapes but from this angle you can only see the straight stripes underneath his arms. He chose to make his hair look like that because as Julian his hair is very carefully “windswept”. He spent hours perfecting the “I just woke up like this and I’m so down to earth for a prince” look but it takes so much time to make it look like that. He wanted to look practical because that’s what he values second to looking Princely but since he has to hide his identity he focused on just wearing practical clothing. He’s always trying to be larger than life and better than he is so I thought giving him platformed boots would get across that idea nicely. He fights with throwing knives that he then shoots lighting bolts at so the lightning has an easier path to follow but he also punches a lot of things with lightning too.

He’s a hothead as Yellow but even whilst he’s being rude as Julian he never lets his temper slip through. He leans into his anger to further distinguish himself from his perfect princely persona so no one can figure out it’s him. As he grows to respect his team, he acts calmer around them and far nicer. He only gets angry during villain fights. He also has to learn the right balance of charm to calm people and get them to listen to his instructions for their own safety whilst also not too charming as to reveal his identity.

A lot of decisions I’ve made for him have come from other characters I like. His middle name is Damian because he reminds me of Damian Wayne and Damian Desmond. I already mentioned the Bakugou hair but he also has that aspect of learning to be a good hero. He also is kind of like Adrien from Miraculous if Adrien was super mean and rude. I think Geo is more like Adrien what with not knowing who he is or what he wants and constantly having to prove himself but Geo has a great support system at home and Julian very much does not.

hi! so my full set of the little shop of horrors topps bubblegum cards just got here (long name i know). i bought them partially as an early birthday present for myself, but also because the cards include a very interesting piece of info/trivia that ive become completely obsessed with. take a look at this:

this is a picture of the card that i took! its the scene where seymour is feeding pieces of orin to twoey, but as you can see, he's holding his head. hes Holding Orin's Severed Head. hoooooly shit, right??? you can see his face is frozen with that goofy grin and everything, its so cool!!!!! im gonna go into more detail about it under the cut, its a big ol ramble so fair warning

so, if youve seen the movie you probably know that (unfortunately) there isn't any part where you see this head. thats because it was a prop that ended up being totally scrapped from the scene! im still actively gathering information, but from what i can piece together from older drafts of the script along with the workprint, the original plan was to show orin's head (big, stupid grin and all) being fed to audrey II

this concept was, at the very least, held onto long enough for a prop replica of steve martin's/orin scrivello's head and face to be fully created. however, as seen in the workprint of the movie, all footage of the head shows only the back of it, with zero glimpse of its face.

and as we know, in the final version of the movie there arent any severed head props to be seen, meaning it got entirely left on the cutting room floor. i havent been able to find any written info about it so far, so i cant tell you the exact reason why it ended up being scrapped. my personal guesses are that it was considered too scary or dark, test audiences reacted badly to it, and/or the head wasnt considered convincing enough to be included.

in a previous version of this post, i stated that i believed there was only 1 existing photo of the head's face, that being the one on the trading card. im happy to report that i was incorrect, as ive now found a Second Image!!!! this one is from a slightly different angle, and its much higher quality than the previous image, allowing us to see more detail on the prop itself!! here, take a look:

for one, i gotta express how EXCITED i was to find this!!!! this new photo allows us to see that the prop itself has quite a bit of detail to it! you can see the creases in its face, not just around the mouth but the eyes and forehead as well! the whole face is impressively realistic, i would say the eyes (or at least the eye thats visible) is a bit uncanny, but every else looks so so good!! there also appears to be some blood stains on the shirt collar and neck, and even more blood stains on the fabric that seymour is holding. something like this was definitely made with a lot of attention to detail and a lot of skill, which makes it even more gutwrenching that it got left completely cut out. im really happy that we have another photo of it, though!!

i'll update this post as needed, once/if i find anything else that relates to this (admittedly very very niche) topic. if youve read the whole thing, thank you!! i really really appreciate it, i hope you found all this as interesting as i did!!!

literally just me talking about edit stuff because im in a mood

these r what i would call like my base level of ingame edits (i dont reallyyyyyy count my cas screenshots as edits unless i spend an actual amount of time actually working on them rather than my usual blur+chromatic aberration+sharpen combo) theres usually very little? or like no actual basis in the characters "canon" or lore like its just done to make them look nice. right. or like its fun lighting practise for me really. theyre usually pretty simple in execution like in the two examples there its just plain yellow background for sunny and the neon cross for vin so i have to put a little extra oomf into it because the backgrounds are like not super detailed so theres less of an "interest" factor from that so the sims themselves have to look REALLY good to make up for it. the ones i end up happy with though usually look really dynamic so it balances out

so these are more sort of abstract edits to me bc they have a basis in the oc lore or themes or whatever and most of my ocs have at least one or two visual markers (in the examples lucari or even just ari specifically gets a fair amount of celestial/sky imagery, i handled the colours here a bit sloppily but its meant to be blue and purple which are ari and luca's text colours, heiya's emphasis being on her muscles and scars and the clouded solar eclipse, redacted gets a lot of water/reflective surfaces/birds/rainbow flares?? and also lightning but that isnt being used in this specific one and sunny gets a fair amount of fire/smoke stuff as well as emphasis on primary colours like his more blue toned edits r usually in his darker stages of his life while warmer yellows means more positive stuff, red usually is just for uhhh violence oriented stuff) and like none of these are Actually happening. right. redacted isnt actually ever in that position with that era of hair in the water with the birds and sunny was set on fire at 13 not as an adult and they certainly never had a portrait of his family like that. but its symbolic, it means Something even if you as the viewer doesnt know it yet 😅 or ever aha

OKAY LOL I PRESSED POST BY ACCIDENT LOL but these are my full lore edits or something likr theyre totally rooted in the background of the ocs. like these are scenes from their lives for real. obviously i fiddle with lighting angle composition a tinyyyy bit to make for a more pleasing or dynamic image at the end but if my ocs all got dedicated like. movies or shows these would be ripped straight from the scene. i take creative liberties with some stuff but in essence these could be story posts (like the 3rd example with idris/redacted is literally in the story itself in one of the posts) the difference is usually amount of images in the post and orientation of said image/s. to me an edit stops being an edit when it has more than likeeeeee 4 images and then i will usually keep that bulk all in landscape or maybe one as portrait for emphasis. edits will be 4 or less and mostly in portrait because i want the less images to take up more room on the dash. the backgrounds for these will usually be way more complex like ill build a mini set or use existing sets for each one. i just think that ingame edits have a lot more capability than you might think (u dont have to go into blender for every little thing promise 🙌🏼) its just like. u can do a lot with this game i swearrrrrr just treat it like an art medium. im serious

ALSO the song almost always is sooo relevant to the edit i swear its not enough to sound good. i have to be unwell about it as well and it has to make sense with what im showing u

East of Eden - John Steinbeck The humanity of this book is what got to me. I couldn't imagine reading another book when I finished this one, I felt bereft and that odd sense of loss that comes at the conclusion of a story with characters you deeply love. Not to mention that the Kathy angle made sections feel straight out of a modern day thriller.

H is for Hawk - Helen MacDonald.. to intertwine a memoir of grief and loss with a th white biography and a large measure of birding knowledge is quite the feat. But that sounds too pat an answer. I'll quote my goodreads review for this: This book felt like me sharing something that lurks so deep inside my heart, so carefully protected, so strewn with feelings like vines and bits of moss that shake off as I hold it out. It felt like sharing that something and absolutely, 100%, knowing that the recipient understood, with every fiber of their being.

Survival in Auschwitz - Primo Levi. Please, this isnt just what you think it is. It is that and more. Levi's words will leave you spellbound and aching and hopeful and everything in between.

Dandelion Wine - Ray Bradbury. As with most of my favorites, this is sublime writing that makes me long for a time i am too young to have experienced. Utterly gorgeous.

Provinces of Night - William Gay. This was my first William Gay novel and I am slowly making through them all. Southern Gothic with such elegant prose. I want to write like him. A negative review called Gay's work "novels with poems scattered about weak plots" and frankly? that's what i love? so good job you sold me

Microserfs - Douglas Coupland The author of my 20s. His stuff opened me up to fiction about real people with real feelings thinking the things you do in your head. The unbearable loneliness of the human condition and the wondrousness that is friendship. I am not a rereader but ive read this book at least five times. I have no idea if it has aged well, i do not care.

The Chronicles of Amber - Roger Zelazny. Something about this urban? fantasy grabbed me in a chokehold and never let go. I first read this at the beach, paging through dog-eared paperbacks a friend urged me to read. I barely left the deck that week. The traveling into Amber, the walking of the Pattern - these things will never leave me.

Lonesome Dove - Larry McMurtry Look yes it's a western but it's The Western for a reason. Characters that seep into your bones. The image of lightning dancing across a steer's horns remains as vivid as when i read the book 3+ years ago.

Station Eleven - Emily St. John Mandel Something about how this post-pandemic story is paced, something about the stakes of it and how they will differ from any other post-apocalyptic book you've ever read, stuck with me. There was a simple beauty here that I never want to let go of.

Most of 52's pretty well foreshadowed, this is the biggest shock value moment imo. I mean, it works for that, but there's a lot less clever buildup and payoff than like. Booster's death.

I really don't like Adrianna's dying "lol nvm murder's cool" change of heart. I feel like this'd be a lot better if it was more her saying these were monsters and that extreme situations justified extreme measures, but it being a total 180 is just dumb.

Love that Tot is just like. Yeah you're going to need the costume. He's seen the whole denial routine before and he doesn't buy it.

I do think she needs it less than Vic did. He started wearing it before he did any introspection, and the separation of identity was central to his journey. Also he had some depersonalization going on. Renee's further along in her process by the time she takes it, and isn't compartmentalizing as much, so it's not central to her self-image in quite the same way. Accepting the mask is important, but wearing it isn't as much, if that makes sense?

Like, there's a lot of parts of herself she's not engaging with, but there isn't a Renee/Question separation in the way there's a Vic/Charlie/Question separation. It's a different angle on identity issues.

Continuing Renee's theme of identifying with guys with anger issues.

I still don't love the total turnaround on character development, and it's running into the same problem a lot of big events have where the destruction is wide enough and effortless enough it doesn't feel that impactful. One crowd being at risk feels more meaningful than a guy fighting an entire country.

I was reminded of this early on in 52, when Black Adam talks about how many people died in Infinite Crisis. Sure it did a bunch of horrible shit to the world and everyone on the planet was witness to destruction, but I was more invested in Jaime's very bad day.

I have to assume from context that this is about the glasses question, and with all due respect, I think this is deeply unfair. I really like your work, and I have also long suspected that a lot of the resentments that have built up within fandom come in part from the way everyone vague blogs instead of talking to each other, which is why I am responding to you directly. Sorry if this is an overstep.

I think the majority of people who are deep in fandom find the Fireside chats in general kind of disappointing because we want them to have more depth. I know you and I agree that the format is not super well suited to in depth character stuff, and obviously CR has not been using it as a vehicle for that; Marisha's was half about Stardew Valley, and many of the questions that are pre-selected by Dani or whomever else are not about the characters or even the campaigns. Plus the actors in the hot seat choosing to just read whatever question they can see while the chat moves at lightning speed means that some of the stuff that gets answered is just random chance. I also don't like it, but I think that's just baked in to it being a live Q & A. The interactive component is its main unique angle for better or worse.

I also think it's fair to look at the questions that get submitted and cringe as someone deeper in fandom—there were somewhere in the realm of 50 different questions about dice, stuff that has been answered before, etc. But I do think we need to remember that as frustrating as those are, some of that is due to the fact that not everyone is In Deep, you know? Most people who watch CR are not active in fandom. We're a tiny subsection. Live chats with actors very often draw casual fans who don't know that these things are redundant or uninteresting to other people. They are just excited to get to ask their favorite something! I find it maddening too, but it is what it is, and it's not new—con audience Q & As have always been the same.

But here are the facts about the glasses question specifically:

It was not the only question Cole submitted; he also submitted some deeper character questions.

It was submitted in the pre-stream phase and was pre-selected by Dani.

It is something Laura has referenced on stream and in 4sd multiple times before without coming to a resolution so it is not completely out of left field for Laura.

The glasses have become a weird lightning rod in fandom, with people assigning moral value to whether someone likes Imogen in glasses, as if liking the idea of glasses means that you infantilize Imogen.

To the above point, it was one of only a couple questions that some people, in a departure from the standard of decorum in the chat, decided to explicitly react to with thumbs down emojis.

I am not going to address the last two points here (though I think I am going to make a post about it generally) because I don't know your feelings about them and I don't want to ascribe the feelings or behaviors of others to you. I only bring it up because I think that they color the reactions people have to this question in particular quite a bit. I think there were many people, myself included, who enjoyed that question being asked not because they have strong feelings about the glasses fanon (I am deeply ambivalent), but because it felt nice to see it be treated as something lighthearted and fun, to be reminded that all the fanwank about it is really just insular and small.

So my main reason for making this post is the rest of it. I do not think it is fair to throw shade at Cole for asking that question. He asked other questions, deeper questions, which I know that you'd only be able to know if you looked at the question thread, but needs to be said because it is directly in opposition of what you said here about not caring about the characters or campaign. And Cole is also one of the people active in fandom who interacts with the discourse the least. He is not someone who is a diehard for any particular answer regarding the glasses; sometimes he draws her with them, sometimes he doesn't—this was clearly not about getting his favored fanon proven correct because he doesn't have one. Which again, you might not know! But that's part of the problem here—there is a lot of assumption of intent and character that is just both off the mark and really ungenerous. Cole is a genuinely nice guy who is getting all kinds of splash damage over a completely innocuous question and it honestly bothers me a lot. Saying that he must not care about the characters or the story because he asked that question, that it makes him or anyone else who enjoyed the question selfish, feels to me like offloading frustrations about the format on him and he does not deserve that. I get why Dani chose it as the final question; if you divorce it from the discourse, it's lighthearted, something Laura has actually been considering back and forth all campaign, and a bit tongue in cheek. It had an inside joke component of ribbing Laura about needing the teleprompter made larger. Ending on something heavy is not the usual strategy for talk segments, and without the drama hanging off it, it looks like a quick, cute send off.

I get being frustrated with what questions were asked and answered, I really do. I also desperately wish we got something juicier, even though I did ultimately enjoy the experience of watching, because Laura is very charming. But I suggest you consider that maybe taking that frustration out on other people who love the show, to say they are selfish and don't actually care about it, is unkind and disproportionate.

I shouldn't be surprised by the fireside chat being the state it was, seeing as I don't follow any CR themed blogs myself or really go into the tags because I find it frustrating but still, the bleed over of fanon is depressing and a lot of you are showing your asses in terms of how you don't actually gaf about the characters or the story the players have chosen to tell.

I love my au's, I love my headcanons, I love my not quite canon ships, but they're for me and the people who chose to enjoy them if they want to. and what makes creating those things more fulfilling is trying to really be true to the character it's about, otherwise just go play with OCs

this will be my last salty post on the matter (guess we'll see) but man, the timing? all of this crazy shit is going on, it is well established that the audience is frustrated with how little downtime we've had with these characters and getting to see those long rest bonds we got to enjoy with previous campaigns, 4SD is over, and that's what you wanna ask about? it's selfish, honestly.
