In the aftermath, once he's dealt with the adrenaline crash, all the panic washed away in favor of a tired so bone deep he's pretty sure if he falls asleep he's gonna be down at least as long as Rip Van Winkle -- in the aftermath he takes a breath, and stares at Tommy laid out on the bed with a tube down his throat and his leg in a cast and the scrapes on his face that are so small in comparison to everything else, but he can't stop staring at those specifically like they've insulted him personally.

He can still remember his voice on the radio.

He can still remember the silence after.

Tommy's captain is right outside the door, guarding it just in case any family who got the call bother to make the trek down to see him, and Buck thinks about the plan he'd made, a week from now, their first vacation together, all the little details he'd told Eddie that Eddie had hyped him up about.
