✨PART 4✨ of things my husband does that are so violently Asher Coded, I had to compile a written list and turn them into headcanons:

• his phone consistently below 20%. Babe has to plug it in every night cause he sure ain’t gonna

• saw the meme image thing on how to break your thumb ligament by flicking your wrist. Sat in quiet contemplation for a few minutes, visibly weighing the pros and cons of conducting this experiment. Moved on with his day without a word (the smart choice)

• “oh, you know you love meeeeeee” when he senses that he’s getting on my nerves, which is all the time /j of course.. mostly

• yoinks our nintendo switch to romance Sebastian in Stardew Valley every single play-through because it’s against his moral code to leave Tsundere characters un-kissed (what does this say about me)

• sends posts of two animals interacting, no matter what they’re doing, and captions it “this is literally us”

• also sends posts of the most scrungliest and disheveled creatures, captioning it “this is you”

• alternating turns of getting one another ‘just because’ flowers. I originally initiated it, so if Babe did the same, Asher would die I think

• does have a thorough skin/hair/hygiene routine, but will wash his face with Dawn dish soap if he’s tired and it’s more convenient

• conks out the second his head hits the pillow like HOW?? Babe lays there awake, wondering what sorts of dark magic he’s really capable of

• makes a questionable decision, and when anyone begins to address it 0.5 seconds after it happens, he’ll jokingly say “it’s in the past now, that was the old me”

• uses the 😳 emoji in the most confusing and unfitting places, so much so it really makes you rethink the original meaning of his texts?? “Can I take your car today? 😳” “Work let us have some of the leftover chicken for dinner😳”

• can and will turn goof mode off at the drop of a hat when needed. It’s actually kinda scary if you get the chance to experience it bc the whole atmosphere of the room changes

• received a uh *noise complaint* and proceeded to bake AND decorate a whole cake to “celebrate the achievement” (photographic evidence exists)

• but that’s not before fully removing the still beeping smoke detector from the ceiling and handing it to me in a panic, asking me to turn it off because he didn’t know how to (photographic evidence also exists)

• can’t cuddle like a normal person, he has to either suffocate you with the weight of his body or you gotta coddle him like he is oh so fragile and the most delicate of waifs— no in between. Great Dane who thinks he’s a lap dog vibes

• gives the BEST advice and pep talks to people. He‘s studying forensic psychology to be a counselor and I think Ash would make a great counselor or advisor of sorts, just in a more lighthearted environment

• knows he has the pretty privilege card, but only uses it for the most unnecessary reasons? Like of course you can have a some of my pasta you freak I literally made you your own bowl, why are you batting your eyelashes and trying to persuade me via brainwave manipulation

🩵He’s perfectly comfortable sitting in silence, alone or with others. There are few things he hates more than people trying to make awkward small talk in order to fill the silence, or out of a perceived obligation to interact. Probably the only thing he hates more than that are those stupid get-to-know-you games where you go around the room and you have to share five facts about yourself. (Sorry, Atlas.) He's not necessarily shy though. He has no problem talking to people when he has something to say, or he genuinely wants to get to know someone.

🩵He is, however, incredibly introverted and overwhelmed easily by bright lights, colors, and crowded spaces. At the end of the day, he’s just trying to conserve his energy and keep his mind calm. One of the ways he does this is by making his apartment as peaceful and calming as possible. It’s always clean, but also cozy, with just the right amount of plants and clutter. And the color palette is light wood, grayscale, and light blues… kind of like a cloudy sky. His favorite color is a pale blue-gray.

🩵I don’t think anything brings him pure joy the way being an uncle does. He loves his nieces with his whole heart and soul. While he doesn’t see himself being a dad, he fully embraces being an uncle. I feel like him and Spencer will be close forever, and I’m sure the same will be true for Aspen.

🩵He loves music. There’s almost always music playing in his apartment, or through earbuds while he’s out for a run or working. He tends to listen to the same stuff over and over, rarely adding anything new to his carefully curated playlist… which consists of 80’s new wave… and is mostly New Order, which is his hands-down his favorite band. His favorite song? Your Silent Face. It’s the best, and he won’t be taking any questions on that fact. Moving on…

🩵He also loves to sing and has a beautiful voice. Since he’s so quiet and reserved most of the time, keeping his thoughts to himself, something about singing loudly feels really freeing and cathartic. He and Asher also enjoy dancing, so there’s a fair amount of singing and dancing and being silly together in their apartment. I don’t think Atlas ever expected to live with someone after Dawn moved out, but he’s very happy that Asher moved in. He brings so much life and energy to their home, creating a lovely balance.

This was my 1st book by Lauren Asher (now one of my autobuy + top 3 authors) & the 1st time I read the marriage of convenience trope✨

I knew 3 things before going into the book:

A) the main characters' names

B) That they get married

C) Workplace Romance

I am writing this review after having read all of her books & I only have 2 things to say:

1) I absolutely adore her dedications

2) Her talking about disabilities + mental health issues via her characters & shedding light on them is something which has made me fall completely in love with her writing & books.

Now, let's talk about the characters, shall we?

🌿Iris Kane: For me, she is one of the coolest & strongest characters I have read about. Her personality was so vibrant and energetic even through all hardships of her life. She was selfless, confident & thrived at her job.

👔Declan Kane: where should I start? This guy was so grumpy yet, an introvert & a selfless person in his past. He gave his all in everything that he did & only aimed for success. He was confident and driven which was all any of us want in life. I couldn't stand the way Iris was treated by him but he did make up for it by his grand gestures or small gestures for Iris.

💍What I loved about the book?

Everything! The banter, the chemistry, all of it. One thing that really has me going like "I'm totally in love with this book" is dogs <3 I know it's very common but Declan adopting a dog because of Iris' story of their proposal and noting all that she talked about & doing it? I loved it & while reading the book I lived for it.

We saw more of Cal here, who has the most personality out of all the 3 brothers & I loved his interactions with any of the characters in the book. It was full of sarcasm and funny remarks, making it interesting to read and laugh!

Overall, I loved this book (I'm pretty sure I have said this, like a lot in this review but okay). If you wanna read a book that highlights important issues while sticking to its plot wonderfully, Lauren Asher is definitely the author you should lean to♡

This is kind of making me want to post some of my scenes with Asher and his ✨problems✨ (I literally have a document in my writing folder labeled that). I’ve avoided it for the sake of not confusing things with the two characters, but I genuinely think that Asher and Maranore’s fight is one of the best scenes that I have ever written

(Also, I think it would be really funny to see the two of them interact. No real reason, just vibes)

So, I have a question and a comment for you.

First, my question: was there any specific piece of media that inspired some of the fantasy elements/specieses in your story? Like, did you ever read a book and think “oh I really like how they do fairies, I want to do something similar”, or was it more of a sort of whatever mix? (Specifically for this story, but also for your other ones if there are any specific examples. Also, I really love how you made fairies work in this world, I think it’s really cool)

Also: I was doing some planning for a scene involving one of my sad and tortured little guys today, and I found myself thinking “oh yes I am once again visiting Kate and Elia’s Torture Characters Through Drug Problems Club”

EVERY SUN THAT EVER DIED UPDATE # 3

welcome to the writing update i said i would post four months ago but forgot about instead 💅💅

so i’ve written about 15,000 words since the last update, and the draft is now at 38k. i have admittedly not been writing basically anything for the last few months, because school is a thing and writers block is a thing and those things don’t really go well together.

i’ve written too much to fit into one update so this will be split into two or three updates! hopefully it won’t be four months before i remember to write the second part of this but don’t hold me to that🧍

CHAPTER 8: EYE TO EYE (working title)

parker gets a haircut and then it’s raining so she goes to an art gallery and is inspired to start painting. we stan a good art gallery scene.

after parker goes back to her apartment, there’s a flashback to her last interaction with her best friend from the cult, alice.

The evening before she left, the sky was a pale indigo, smudged with dim stars. A yellow crescent moon slanted through the branches of the oak tree over the lake, which cast its pronged shadow further across the property just before dusk. Parker had wandered across the grounds to where Alice sat cross-legged in the grass, messy blond hair static around her, a blue bruise welding her cheek.

IT'S EASY

a melodramatic vignette. melodrama is apparently my favourite thing. here’s the end of it:

Sometimes it’s easy to find an empty parking lot outside the city and scream, scream until your throat caves in, scream until you run out of breath, run out of things to scream about, can’t utter a word for weeks. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s satisfying, sometimes it’s possible, but you can never bring yourself to do it because what will people think, what will people say, what will people do? What do people do with a person like you? It’s easy to want the best, the worst, but sometimes all you want is to be here and be here, live here, belong here. The problem is that you don’t know what any of these things mean.

THE FIRST PAINTING

a short vignette that describes parker making her first painting. very self explanatory. no excerpts good enough to share.

CHAPTER 9: SETTING FIRES

asher and ezra (or should i say: ezrasher) have a conversation about ✨arson✨ because thats what normal people talk about right!!

ezra is a pyromaniac who doesn’t set things on fire anymore due to a certain traumantic event in his past (more on that later).

here's ezra being intimidating:

He strikes a flame with the lighter and curves a palm above it, the flame dancing so fast it’s hard to follow. “There’s so much destruction, in one tiny flame. I could burn down this building if I wanted to. I could burn down the entire city if I wanted to.” He smiles and places the lighter on the railing with a dull clink. “I could make this place a living hell.”

and here's an instance of 'lilac' used as a verb because verbs!!!!!!!

Asher’s legs still ache from a day of wandering the city, where Ezra had bought them coco-cola from a vending machine and they’d walked through the nearest park, bushes ribbing the edges of the path and redwing blackbirds flashing their wings and soaring over their heads. They’d walked until twilight lilac’d on the horizon, and then headed back to the apartment, sunset pearlescent against shop windows and reflected in the eyes of every passerby.

CHAPTER 10: SWALLOWING LIGHT

i’m going to drastically alter the events of this chapter so you get no summary, only nice prose.

Parker paints pictures of everything in her apartment over the next few days – the ceiling fan, the waxed floorboards, the sink faucet. She’s already seeing improvement, but not as much as she expects. She finds a way to paint finer lines, rather than thick messy brushstrokes. She finds a way to blend colours more realistically, to create the gradient of twilight blurred across the horizon outside her window.

and here’s the end:

Sometimes it feels like nothing will ever change. Nothing ever changes. Nothing ever ends. Nothing ever works. She grabs at the moonbeams and her hand sinks right through them.

i thought my melodramatic phase ended a year ago but apparently it did not 🥰

MACROPHOBIA

i’ll give you the entire vignette because it’s very short. it’s another phobia definition so naturally i like it a lot.

(n.) a fear of long waits.

A fear of waiting and waiting and waiting for something to change but nothing ever changes, a fear of waiting and waiting and waiting for something to happen, for something to cause something else to cause something else to cause something else, but nothing ever causes anything and you’re afraid you’ll get used to it. You’re afraid you’ll get used to this soaked stagnancy, this watercolour world half-coloured in, the sky never blued by rain or the grass never dotted with wildflowers. Nothing changes anymore and you’re afraid time will stop, years will overlap and filter over each other like recording over the same tape. Nothing changes anymore and you’re afraid nothing ever will.

BIRD STRIKE

another vignette, which is only dialogue, and is basically just ezra telling asher that he just got kicked out of his apartment and they have to move. very fun times.

ORANGE

a list of images that describe a scene, similar to the chapter “indigo” from the previous update. asher mentions that he knows of an old cult member who left, who he thinks they can go stay with for a while until they find somewhere to live. this vignette is them walking up to her house (which is on the beach ofc) and knocking on the door.

here’s a bit of it:

Sand silting under the soles of your Converse / a sky paled by sunrise / waves crashing and melting on the shore / a flimsy paper map clutched in your hand, tugged at by wind / his voice hardly resonating in your mind / 6:48 a.m. / a gull swooping low over your heads / a boy in swim trunks watching you from knee-deep in the water / broken seashells scattered in the sand / a forgotten shovel and bucket half-buried / sunbeams glittering in his irises / the way the water looks like ruptured glass / a trickle of soft voices rising from behind the narrow line of trees / early morning beach-goers trickling into view / a patina of shadows cast across a forgotten picnic blanket scrawled further off / the house you’ve been looking for looming ahead / a greasy paper plate wafting across your path / an orange peel coiled in the sand / the way he asks if you’re sure you know where you’re going / the way you say you do even though you don’t /

and it continues but you definitely dont want to read that .

i know asher’s going through it already, but imagine him coming down with a tummy bug. he’s feeling so sick and extra miserable cause he can barely afford to feed himself and his puppy and now he’s puking up his one indulgence for the week and god, what a waste. he doesn’t wanna put anything else in his tummy until he was sure it’ll stay down. he ends up making himself feel worse cause he’s been empty for so long that he’s not sure if he’s still nauseated from the bug or if he’s just that hungry

at first, my brain was just: tummy. like maybe ash tries to fill himself up a little with water before he actually eats anything and it makes his tummy all sloshy and grumbly but when it doesn’t come up, he nibbles on a slice of bread or some crackers… something to soak up a little of the excess liquid gurgling around in there

and then i was like: that’s not angsty/plotty enough. plus if i’m gonna daydream abt him interacting with payton, i better figure out how they meet. so then i thought he’d probably be so stressed if he had to miss work that he’d end up not taking off as much time as he really should to feel better. so he goes in and somehow gets through the day, and he’s walking home (cause he can’t spare any money for public transport) when he starts feeling shaky and lightheaded. he stops at a cafe for a quick break, sitting at a table in the corner because he doesn’t wanna get in the way and cause trouble. eventually someone comes over and he braces himself to be kicked out only for the sweet barista to offer him a glass of water and ask if he’s okay

I enjoyed reading all of this so much that I had to just post it for others to potentially enjoy, too. It makes me so happy when people take my OCs and make such lovely, detailed scenarios 🖤✨

"he’s not sure if he’s still nauseated from the bug or if he’s just that hungry" - this is one of my favourite sickfic/whump tropes. His belly is rumbling and churning around excess stomach acid, but what does it want?

That whole second ask is perfect. I can picture him sitting, curled up on his bed, one hand resting on Sparks' head for comfort, the other holding a cracker that he occasionally takes a small nibble from.

"he starts feeling shaky and lightheaded. he stops at a cafe for a quick break" - ooh, I love this! He might also be craving some meaningful human interaction after being chained to his desk all day (he's a receptionist at a dentist's office, so his conversations are brief), and he thinks that maybe he'll bump into Jayden there. He goes in, and even though he can see that Jayden is not there, he feels so drained and woozy that he just slumps down in a chair.

And yeah, I could totally see Payton noticing him over there, realising it's the same guy who didn't look too good last week/the week before. They'd be so nervous, but they'd work up the courage to go over and talk to him, just to check that he's alright.

Medicine

16. How does your character tolerate pain? How do they handle stress and trauma?

Bentley can handle pain just fine. They can handle stress just fine. Trauma? Nah bruh, they need an emotional support dog and two husbands to get through that shit.

Asher is a dramatic baby because they know Danse will absolutely drop everything to nurse them, even though pain really doesn't bother them. They can handle stress just fine... Until Danse is involved. And they understand the concept that they've gone through traumatic events, but it barely registers with them. Tho they really need some therapy if I'm being real.

Richard handles stress and pain beautifully. He is epically and legendarily bad at handling trauma. His inability to handle trauma is literally the entire reason that Nuclear Family even happened 😂

Gin's pain tolerance is variable, but no matter what she tends to be dramatic about her pain. Handles stress like a goddamn champ- she thinks. Ask her brother and he'll say otherwise. Trauma? She can handle it, she's just gonna be dramatic about it first

17. Does your character have any habits? Any tics, fixations, rituals, superstitions, or dependencies?

I wasn't gonna include Bentley until I saw ✨dependencies✨. Yeah they're dependent on the emotional support from MacCready and Hancock (even when they were only platonic) to help them function in this new strange world. Other than that? They may or may not go to wine to help distract themself.

Idk if fixation is meant as hyperfixation, but you put Asher anywhere near a scrap pile and their inner Scav will pop out. They definitely got in trouble for disappearing into junkyards while on mission and reappearing two hours later covered in gunk with an apron filled with goodies.

Richard has a habit? Tic? Ritual? Of tracing the constellations at night if he's on the road now.

Gin's a smoker. 'Nough said.

18. What's something that always makes your character feel better (physically, emotionally, mentally)?

Hugs always make Bentley feel better. Especially from Duncan. Baby hugs just bring them peace.

Asher always feels better after a smooch. Lil Danse smooch.

Richard is where the Fancy Lad Cakes quirk comes from. You give him a box of those and he will solidly forget anything was wrong as long as those snack cakes last.

You'd think Gin's answers would be a cigarette. But actually it's running. Specifically from X. It's like a fun little game of chase that gives her something else to focus on, and when he catches her she's up high.

Repair

22. What is your character's single most handy trait or skill?

Because Bentley is such an emotional and traumatized person, they're easily underestimated. They figured out early that because they seem so frail, people let their guard down when going after them.

I mentioned this early on in NF, but Danse credits Asher for his continued survival. Anything they upgrade becomes a fuckin legendary item. BOS folks like up to beg them to Midas Touch their shit.

Richard didn't become a Captain over nothing. He's a strategist. He's a big ol' himbo, but when it comes to tackling dungeons hideouts, there's nobody better to have with you.

Gin is a fucking deadeye with any manual or semi-automatic firearm. Good to have if you're running low on rangers, can nail a ragstag through the eye at ranges that would put MacCready to shame.

23. How concerned is your character with practicality? Are they more down-to-earth, grounded, or focused on necessity, or are they more of a dreamer, indulgent, or reckless?

Bentley is very down to earth. They have anxious tendencies but most of their concerns dig them further down than into the clouds.

Asher's so fucking indulgent and reckless. They sneak away from their tanks and stalk strangers across a strange area for a wellness check for fucks sake.

Richard's very focused on necessity, though he's very much a dreamer if he has even the faintest reason to be romantic.

Gin's like Asher. Girl hopped out of a hiding to antagonize a bunch of raiders and then almost toppled off a cliff until X intervened.

24. How quick is your character to forgive? Are they able to earn forgiveness from others easily?

Bentley's very quick to forgive most people, and even faster to earn forgiveness.

Asher is a very spiteful creature. There's a small handful of people who they don't hold grudges with as a rule. Everyone else the will hold a grudge to their grave. This tends to go in both directions.

Richard forgives easy... Earning it tends to be harder tho.

Gin is the opposite of Asher. Forgives easily for most, but if you're in that one percent it's fuckin grudge city. But people tend to forgive her easier because she's got chronic baby face and people assume she's a tweenager.
