they’re distracted as they type in someone’s seven digit number, and by distracted they mean they’re sucking on a vape pen & getting high off its contents ( though it’s also safe to mention they’re inserting a number they found in their back pocket from the night before & they may or may not have entered some of the digits wrong ). but nonetheless, they hit the call button once it’s done, sooner propping their phone up to their ear & cutting to the chase after three rings.  ❛ hey, jason bourne, right? ❜  avi reads the name scribbled onto the loose piece of napkin, unaware that jason bourne is a movie character — though they’re quick to continue on so the person on the other end doesn’t correct them about it,  ❛ so i totally remember last night, ❜  they don’t,  ❛ and i think we should do it again. whattya say? area 51? eleven o’clock? i’ll slap some glitter on my cheeks so you know it’s me. ❜

          JUST HOW THE DOCTORS RECOMMEND IT, avi treats their body with no amount of disregard, respecting it like a rare gem caught in the rough. polishing the bone structure. lathering where’s sensitive. soaking the nape with essential oils. and most importantly, maintaining a sense of pride in their entirety — which is why, on every third day of the month, they throw themself into a void that’s filled with treating their body like the temple it is. a spa day, to be specific. the well curated packages that elysium has to offer not even having to convince avi to exchange their dollar signs for two cucumbers to lay atop the eyes.

          in fact, they’re in the midst of a full-body exfoliation when thoughts of a lost paycheck slips their mind. entirely immersing themself in the experience of a professional touch gliding across their skin, all whilst a blissful aura radiates from them as they ease into themself, sigh, and say,  ❛ i deserve this. ❜  those words sparking a knowing smile to etch at their lips. eyes blinking toward the masseuse at hand and then toward the crack in the doorway — a crack which grants them a view of someone walking by. that same someone locking eyes with avi for one, two — oh, what feels like hours of seconds before avi licks their lips and casts a glance to the side. allowing the other to stare at them if she so inclines.

A flash of anger, much like oil in a hot pan, seizes hold of Sage’s features for a moment before she’s able to wrestle them under control. The culprit, a garishly dressed individual half-hidden behind ridiculous sunglasses, smiles over at her with an infuriating air of apathy, an insult encased in a pet name she’s heard far too many times in the courtroom, the bedroom, the street. At least they have succeeded in frightening off the woman on the phone, easing the strain of idiocy on Sage’s tired ears temporarily. She fears, however, they have replaced her with something far worse. 

“No one was talking to you either.” She counters coolly, posture remaining casual against the metal seats, book still folded in her hand. “And my name is Sage, not honey. But you can call my Miss London or you can simply not refer to me at all. In fact, I think I’d much rather prefer the latter.” Her lips twist into a sour sneer as she turns back to her book, the words now swimming angrily across the pages, and pretends to read.

          IT’S FUNNY, ALMOST, HOW THE OTHER REACTS to avi’s reaction to her reaction toward someone discussing a case involving manslaughter. the spark of red avi reads in her eyes going up in flames, as though they’ve plucked the wrong chord and ruined her song, that limelight she found herself under now flickering until avi characteristically steals it from above her. which, it makes sense this way, especially considering avi’s head is held high whilst the woman’s drops down into her book — either reading fast or pretending to. the abrupt end to their conversation doing nothing but bring a smirk to avi’s expression. letting this silence hang on for one, two, three minutes before they’re reminding her they’re presence is still here with,  ❛  it’s avi, by the way ... miss honey. ❜  a tease. another wrong string to pluck.  ❛ but if you venture over to club bacchae sometime, you can call me abba. and it’s an honest invitation seeing as you’re tightly wound in the way you’re literally tight, y’know, frigid. i can promise you that you’ll not only heat up there, but the music’ll be loud enough, you won’t have to stand to correct anyone while you’re enjoying the show: me. ❜

no. no, no, nonono, no,  ❛ oh my god ... what a cop-out, ❜  avi stresses where they sit & judge ( not so silently ) near the bar, their ears tuning into the music that fades through the overhead speakers. sweet caroline. a song they swear someone sings every week during karaoke night, & honestly? it’s a tired & unoriginal way to seek audience interaction — in avi’s opinion, at least. which, if you ask them, is always right & never wrong, and no, criticism will not be taken at this time.  ❛ you — ❜  they snap to get the person beside them’s attention, not knowing anything as far as the other’s name, age, or phone number ( maybe avi’ll ask for that specifically by the end of this charade ). the only thing they’re banking on is the stranger’s talent,  ❛ this isn’t up for debate, but we’re performing next — why? because everyone loves a troy & gabriella moment, and i will be damned if this nobody on stage thinks sweet caroline is the crowd pleaser of the night. ❜

        THE ILLUSION BEGINS AND ENDS with a tightly wound blindfold, the black veil wrapped around avi’s eyes having amassed a wide range of ooo’s and awh’s as they presented elements of vogue and burlesque alike. each snap of their wrist and sharp angle of their body blending well with the beat despite this obstruction — because practice makes perfect and, darling, they were more than that. a truth they won’t shy away from telling considering once they’ve donned their final bow and withdrawn the blindfold from their eyes, they’re quickly met with an onslaught of applause and distant cat-calls. their open arms welcoming the recognition for all it’s worth as their sights survey the crowd — a twinkle highlighting browns and hazels — until they spot a familiar face or two well off to the side. so familiar, in fact, avi doesn’t hesitate to wink, smirk, and offer a curtsy, silently challenging them to approach if they so dare.

tomas feels his eyes narrowing just a touch at the other, his lips pressing together - not that many people can tell, given that his mustache usually covers most of his less noticeable mouth-movements. his hands wring together for a moment as his head cocks to the side, hesitation running through him before a quiet grunt sounds from the back of his throat. “too much makeup is a no-go. i’m shit at art,” he said simply, but the question of blood - fake or otherwise - had a faint snort leaving his lips. “ain’t never found somethin’ that made me squeamish. pretty sure such a thing doesn’t exist out there, so that’s not a problem.” ranch work was dirty work, after all, and you had to get over a lot of those inhibitions pretty early on, and since he’d been working at puhlman ranch pretty much since he’d reached the age of being allowed to work - and then bought it later on in life - it’d been a long time since he’d felt faint at the sight of… well, anything.

❛ okay, so brooding zombie is out of the question ... could’ve fooled me, sweetheart, ❜  avi mutters to themself, not quite loud enough to be heard entirely, but not quiet enough either to be considered free from defensive reaction. something avi is quick to avoid as they carry on walking & talking, projecting their voice this time so the older man can properly hear,  ❛ well, if you’re not into prosthetics & cheap makeup, but are okay with blood, my suggestion would be to go as something that kills, rather than something that has already been killed. so a vampire, a zombie hunter, the unoriginal, but very easy to pull off & quite the horror classic, scream. ❜  they even pull out a mask that represents the slasher-film murderer, though with its oddly deformed shape, it’s clearly a knockoff of scream, instead of an emulation of the real thing.  ❛ what’s your granddaughter going as? ❜

to be fair, avi isn’t watching where they’re going. in fact, their eyes are glued to their phone as they embark on a texting war with someone who had a lot of opinions ( veiled criticism at worst ) about avi’s recent instagram post. which isn’t the rarest of occurrences & definitely won’t be the last — but as avi’s thumbs do all the talking, they don’t expect to become speechless when they round a corner and, subsequently, run into a nameless figure walking in the opposite direction. they’re so taken aback by this, that they wind up stumbling backward & saving their fall by landing halfway onto a wooden bench.  ❛ oh, shit — ❜  avi curses, shock written in bold on their face as they look up to see who caused their fallen dignity, only to realize the other person has a camera in their hands & is, indeed, filming.  ❛ what — i — is this a joke? ❜  and then after a second thought, they slightly change their tune,  ❛ honey, if i wanted my ass in the air like this while you’re on the other side of the camera, you could’ve asked nicely. ❜

they’re nursing a coke zero that they’ve doctored into a poor man’s long island iced tea, sipping it through a metal straw as they push through their apartment door ( already unlocked ) & shut it behind them. shoes then chucked to the side before they’re turning around and — oh. of course they’d come across two uninvited guests. both having made themselves at home on avi’s couch, looking mighty comfortable despite this being, well, not their house, what with the tv ( loudly ) turned on & everything. this shocking phenomenon wearing off quickly for avi, considering they’re somehow used to these surprise visits because a) they never lock their front door, and b) cyrus & jj are like two lost stray dogs that followed avi home one day & have yet to actually leave.  ❛ is this an intervention? ❜  they approach the situation, stepping further into the living room,  ❛ ‘cause if it is, you should know i’ve done nothing wrong in my life & i’m positively perfect. so ... ❜  as they take another sip from their spiked beverage,  ❛ or should i assume you two missed my face & you’re regretting spending so much time away from me? because that’s definitely valid. ❜  something they will never stop teasing the other two about ever since avi became the single & forgotten one of the trio.

drinks come and go as jackson enjoys his own company by the bar, while still keeping an eye out for anyone that might catch his attention. that is, of course, until someone takes the empty seat next to him and his attention is all theirs. he’s already grinning as soon as blue hues fall on avi’s figure, taking a small sip from his drink before he sparks up conversation. “so, what is it tonight, darlin’? came here to sweet talk me or insult me? or is it both?” there’s a little gasp after his question, still smirking at them before he leans slightly closer but still maintaining their distance. “you know i love it when you’re mean to me.”

GOD, THEY’RE IN NEED OF A DRINK. or two. or four.  ❛ vodka cranberry. make it a double, ❜  avi orders as soon as they sit down at the bar, fingers carding through their hair in a ‘please, god, let me forget the phone conversation i just had with jaden’ type fashion. these prayers somewhat answered when the man beside them catches their attention, avi’s sights landing on a smirk that renders them unimpressed and, for the most part, REGRETFUL about allowing such lips to explore their body a week ago. or was it a month? maybe they should just say how unforgettable jackson was to get him off their pedestal.  ❛ i love that you love getting even an ounce of my attention, honey, but i’m gonna have to pass. i’ve met my wonder bread quota for the week. ❜

        THEIR FIFTEEN MINUTES OF UNWAVERING FAME has flickered and simmered into a quiet buzz from those who witnessed avi in action, their inflated ego drifting from the scene they’ve caused as more than few onlookers stamp avi’s performance to their memories and their stage name, abba, to their mouths. in truth, avi becomes high off it. this validation. this idea that the world is their circus, with avi as the ringmaster and curious eyes as their none-the-wiser audience. they latch onto it, folding the euphoria up and tucking it away in their pocket whilst they waltz toward the exit. always one to leave in the height of people wanting more, only for them to eventually return for an encore hours later. but right now — six inch heels under their belt — avi kisses the lingering intrigue goodbye. already in the middle of inhaling a hit from their vape before they recognize the person who’s taking their leave too.  ❛ where are we off to, cat scratch? ❜  they toy with the nickname as they join trixie by the hip and continue walking,  ❛ and is it far away from hyper-caffeinated matilda’s and eloise’s? ❜

        IT’S AN OVEREXPOSED AND SATURATED HALLELUJAH, this carnival, the flashing lights and balloon devils far from the spotlights and dancing devils avi was used to. they couldn’t care less about the glee. the awe. the fascination one got from winning a hand-me-down stuffed animal. rather, their interests lie in turning this family friendly affair into an abba&co one, the bluetooth speaker they’ve brought with them accompanied by a backup dancer or two as avi situates all they need to pull off this free, unlicensed performance — one not hosted by the carnival itself, no. but if you’re to ask them, they’d just say a little rule breaking doesn’t hurt when providing an actual jaw dropping show.  ❛ is that bartender #3 i see? ❜  they interrupt their setup in the midst of catching wind of the stoic ( drunk? ) man walking by,  ❛ impeccable timing, darling, i needed someone to tie-the-knot. ❜  a sarcastic snort escapes them as they hold out a blindfold, jokingly implying silas should do the honors and finish their costume off just like he did their corset.

they’re late. but they’re also terribly hungover. any sense of dignity left in their dramatic — albeit beautiful — existence somehow washed away by the last mai tai that was urged into their hand the night before. the consequences of which having begun at eight o’clock this morning when they continuously hit the snooze button until they disabled their alarm entirely, this plan of action resulting in them showing up to work an hour ( okay, maybe three hours ) after they were supposed to. clad in sunglasses that cover half their face & a wide-brimmed sun hat to, well, block them from any offending light, if possible — they theatrically throw themself against the nearest wall & slump their figure, announcing to ali behind the counter,  ❛ please give me a round of applause for being here, or else i might call in sick. ❜

let the record show, avi amin has no reason being in the emergency waiting room right now — in fact, they have no reason being here ever. but nights when they’re enjoying the nightlife alone & subsequently leave to go home alone, they often find themself here without a second thought. using their apparent intoxication & their insistence that they have a very bad, very unfortunate headache to somehow finagle their way into one of the vacant rooms, just so they can see allegra for thirty minutes or more. just so she can warm their cold heart & remind them they’re not lonely, they’re just alone.  ❛ my head ... ❜  avi sighs theatrically, the back of their hand meeting their forehead as they lay down across three seats, all while one of the nurses they’ve been complaining to looks at them as though she’s fighting the urge to roll her eyes,  ❛ please spare me from these harsh florescents — or spare me some sunglasses ... both works. ❜

WHAT: avi’s car breaks down and has subsequently been towed to the mechanic WHEN: late morning WHERE: vulcan’s auto shop AVAILABILITY: closed, @magsonfire​

        IF YOU WERE TO ASK AVI, they’d say everything in their life is impeccable ... except their car: a second removed, distant cousin, twice handed over volkswagen bug. which, suffice to say, means their main mode of transportation is a heaping pile of junk. but also, in the same vein as its owner, the mismatched hubcaps, different colored doors, and a defining dent on the hood where avi had spent an hour making out with a pool boy ( golden speedo and all ), is what makes it infamously stand out. and perhaps that’s why avi’s yet to rid themself of it, despite the car barely hanging on its last leg. literally. after all, it took five twists of the ignition for it to kick into gear this morning, and then halfway through their drive toward ambrosia, it decides to putter out right when they stop at a red light.

          now they’re here. the mechanic. a place that reeks of oil and pit stains and black gunk beneath the nails. it’s no surprise when avi’s unable to mask the disgust as they hop out of the tow truck and watch as their car is dragged into the shop, their colorful world clashing immediately with their grimy surroundings.  ❛ so help me, rina sawayama, if someone even touches me ... ❜  they mutter to themself, jaw tightening before they’re walking over to who they assume will be fixing their broken vehicle.
