Ohhh I love when a piece of media sets up an anti-expectation. When everything in the premise is pointing toward a specific Result or Resolution but by the nature of the story’s genre you don’t expect the Thing to actually happen, you naturally expect the story to take a different turn, but then the thing does happen, early on even, and all your expectations for where the story was going are shattered and the narrative is free to go beyond its original confines and blow your mind.

Parenting questions for Ella and Rosy, and Ellis and Sally, and Ellery and Glitch. :)
11. Who has a harder time getting the baby to eat their food?
13. Who checks under the bed for monsters?
14. Who’s the “tooth fairy” that leaves money under the kids’ pillows?
A. Who do they think their child takes after? In what ways do they remind them of each other?
E. Are they honest with their children? Are there certain things they try to shield from them?
Tysm PD!! 🥰🥰 Long answers are banished under the cut 💕
11. Who has a harder time getting the baby to eat their food?
Ella and Ambrose: Ella has the harder time of it. I think that Ambrose would be unexpectedly patient with his kids (and his partner, lol) but that, while Ella can be patient too, her patience eventually starts to wear thin on things like this and she can get a little frustrated after a while.
Ellis and Sally: Sally does. Ellis is generally a more patient person than Sally is, and I think that would extend to these kinds of frustrating parenting moments too. (Sally does a better "here comes the airplane" though.)
Ellery and Glitch: I think Ellery does, but only marginally. Like Sally, I think Glitch is just better at getting the baby excited about eating and thinking of it as a game. I also think that Glitch just has this quality to his voice that bewitches babies (when I met my cousin's eldest after she was born, she was absolutely obsessed with my voice. Every time I spoke (and she didn't necessarily do this for the other three people who I was visiting with) she would just turn to stare at me with this amazed expression. I think it's the same kind of thing for Glitch).
13. Who checks under the bed for monsters?
Ella and Ambrose: Ella does! I know I just said that Ambrose is unexpectedly patient, but I don't know how well that patience would extend to things that are absolutely and obviously not real. I think Ella is the one who would actually be better about going through the "checking for monsters" steps. She remembers what it's like to have recurring childhood nightmares about Medusa-like monsters with snakes or tentacles or wires for hair (reminiscent of the devices she'd be hooked up to during her tests), so she does what she can to banish her kids' monsters.
Ellis and Sally: I think Sally accidentally played into it too hard once while she was checking and now the kids typically ask Ellis to do it.
Ellery and Glitch: Glitch is the one who checks under the bed. I think he's better about making it fun for the kids and using laughter to stop them from being scared. I also think that he misappropriates some of Unity's resources to "invent" a monster-detecting device to go under their beds, which will make a noise if it "detects" any monsters. That way, if they don't hear any beeps and boops throughout the night, then they know that there's no monsters under their bed.
14. Who’s the “tooth fairy” that leaves money under the kids’ pillows?
Ella and Ambrose: Ella is. Given what we know about Ambrose's upbringing, the Tooth Fairy isn't something I can see him really thinking about (or even remembering that it is something that children might believe in) until Ella reminds him.
Ellis and Sally: Sally is. I don't have a super deep reason for this one, I just think she'd enjoy it more and have more fun with it.
Ellery and Glitch: Honestly, I think they trade off. I know it's kind of a cheap answer since I'm supposed to pick one or the other, but I really do think that even when one does it the other is nearby watching it happen and being part of the moment. And then they go cuddle on the couch and talk about how their kids are getting so big now and are growing up.
A. Who do they think their child takes after? In what ways do they remind them of each other?
Ella and Ambrose: For Ji-eun, their eldest, her personality is way more like Ella's. If the expression is "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", then in this case the apple is still in the same tree. Every teacher she's ever had has described Ji-eun as having "a real personality". She's loud and makes jokes and commands attention in a way that reminds everyone of Ella. She can also be very stubborn, which Ella insists that she gets from Ambrose because "I'm [Ella] not that bad" (she is, but Ji-eun has mastered Ambrose's one arched eyebrow look so perfectly it made Ella do a spit take she was laughing so hard the first time she saw it). Their younger daughter, (who still doesn't have a name but whose English name is probably) Hope, is a bit quieter and more subdued. She's very thoughtful and pensive and tends to think a lot longer before she speaks in a way that reminds Ella a bit of Ambrose when he's not being a hardass.
Ellis and Sally: I can't answer this one super well, unfortunately. I saw that you asked this question for Ellis and Sally and remembered all at once that I don't actually know anything about their kids specifically (other than at least one is a precog and that maybe one was adopted). I think one, maybe both of them, get into art as kids (though one likely takes it much more seriously than the other as they get older), which reminds Ellis of Sally (he cannot count the number of times he's come home from work to find a Painting Mess absolutely everywhere with Sally and the kids happily sitting in the middle of it).
Ellery and Glitch: Ellery swears that she was involved in the birth of their eldest, Langston, but that she would never be able to tell if she hadn't been there because Langston is essentially a little Glitch mini-me. One of the first few posts in Ellery's tag is actually one that reminded me of Ellery picking Langston up from daycare (before Langston had a name in my head). Maya, their daughter, is a better mix of both of them: She shares Glitch's sense of humour (which is similar to Ellery's but not quite the same, and Ellery insists Maya has more his sense of humour than hers) but can be prone to worrying, the way Ellery is (Glitch has his moments of anxiety and worry too, but Ellery is more of a "worry-wart" than he is, I think).
E. Are they honest with their children? Are there certain things they try to shield from them?
I think all parents lie to their kids at least a little bit, even if they generally try to be honest with their children. I think all of them do try to be honest with their kids (to varying degrees) when they can, but they're also parents - they're going to try to shelter them from the worst and scariest things, at least when they're little. One of the biggest things that each of my Buttons would have to consider whether or not they're going to lie to their child about would probably be their mind blindness. I think that they all ultimately have to explain what mind blindness is in general terms, but that they try to play down the dangerous implications of their mind blindness (like mind wiping), at least until they're older.
Ella and Ambrose: Ella tries to explain her mind blindness rather matter-of-factly to her kids when they're younger. She doesn't explain the negative side effects of her condition to her kids when they're that young (she doesn't want to scare them and they're so little), but she does answer honestly as they get older and start having questions (and they start putting things together, like "if your mind blindness works like x then wouldn't that mean that y?"). In her mind, her mind blindness isn't something that she can realistically keep from her kids, but she's also not going to treat it like it's some kind of disastrous condition that her kids can never know about. She's always had (or, at the worst times, tried to have) the opinion that her mind blindness is a part of her, but it's only one part of her, and she tries to bring that same energy to conversations about it with her kids. At the same time, I think they're always very vague about Ambrose's childhood and how he grew up.
Ellis and Sally: At least one of Ellis's kids is a precog, so there was never any chance of them not having to explain exactly how Ellis's mind blindness works. He likely has to have multiple conversations when the kids are young about how no, not every kid knows how their daddy feels when they hug. Ellis does try to downplay the more concerning parts of his mind blindness, especially how Sally has used her precognition to act as a warning alarm for if someone is messing with his brain: he doesn't want to burden his kids with a sense of responsibility over him and his wellbeing (In his mind, he's the dad and they're the kids, so he should be worrying about them and not the other way around). I think Ellis always kinds of downplays these dangers of being mind blind, even as they get older and aren't little kids anymore.
Ellery and Glitch: Ellery is always pretty uncomfortable talking about her mind blindness with her kids (since she doesn't like talking about it much at all - it's very emotionally taxing and makes her feel incredibly vulnerable). Her kids know that she's mind blind and what that is (because it observably affects parts of her daily life), but she gets really uncomfortable when it comes to actually explaining all of what that means. Glitch, however, is way more comfortable talking about Ellery's mind blindness, so I think he's the one the kids go to when they have questions, and he's the one who explains to them as they get older about what being mind blind means in greater detail.

Guardians SW One-Shots: Louise Eun-Kwan (Crystal's Guardian): Mountain Trouble!
Eun-Kwan Palace - WingsView City
Louise Eun-Kwan is Crystal's Guardian and rescues in snowy terrain, mountains and avalanches. It was winter, your favorite season and she was skiing with her sister Lizzy, on the slope of snow that formed in the Eun-Kwan Palace, while competing who could go down the slope faster:
- Let's go Lizzy! - said Louise
- I will beat you Louise - said Lizzy
- let's get ready for our extreme and radical challenge! - Louise said
- As long as everything is very well secured - said Lizzy - we don't want any accidents
- Better prevent it sister - said Louise checked everything before going down the mountain
Everything was ready, now was the moment of truth.
- Ready Louise? - said Lizzy
- I was born ready! - replied Louise
- 3, 2, 1! - said the two together - Here we go!
The two went down next to each other, when they reached the end, Louise he was thinking he won, but his joy was short-lived.
- I won! - said Louise - I'm the best!
- Louise - said Lizzy - we both arrived together
- Ah, sorry - said Louise - so we won!
Lizzy laughed, Louise and Lizzy were heading to the WingsView Mountain Range for yet another exciting challenge. About that....
Mi-rae's Mechanic Shop
Leslie was with her cousin Lee Mi-rae trying out her new climbing gear when she asked.
- Lee, It turned out amazing! - asked Leslie - I love my equipment, I'm dying to use it
- Yes Leslie - said Lee - you will rock with him
- Thank you Lee - thanked Lesllie
- You're welcome cousin - said Lee
Leslie came out of the shop with her new equipment, eager to try it out.
WingsView Mountain Range
Leslie arrived at Cordillera to climb, taking the opportunity to use her new equipment that Lee had given her, Leslie positioned everything to begin her rappelling descent, the equipment felt secure, but the guardian did not realize that the equipment was poorly adjusted and could cause serious problems.
- The mountain is perfect for a radical descent - Lesllie said - here I come!
The beginning of the descent was going well, too bad it didn't stay that way, the cable got stuck in the middle of the course, causing Lesllie to hang on the ridge and any movement could be enough to cause a huge avalanche.
- Oh no, I'm stuck, I can hardly move - Lesllie said - I can't get the equipment off, it's stuck, I need to call the Healing Team.
Skating Rink - Gymnasium
Lizzy s Louise went to the skating rink, meet with some Super Wings and their guardians, Ellie and Lollo were waiting for Lesllie, not knowing what happened, they were both worried.
- Ellie where is Leslie? - asked Lollo - she said she was going to go down the mountain range and so far she hasn't come back
- Is she still not back? I was going to ask you if it wasn't her out there - Said Ellie in surprise - It doesn't smell good to me
- For me too - said Lollo - my intuition is telling me that something happened to her, but I don't know what.
- Girls! Come skate! - invited Lolla - The track is great!
-Let's go! - said Lollo - we are waiting for Lesllie to arrive
- I understand - said Lolla - but come soon, you won't want to miss it.
Lizzy and Louise went to talk to Lollo and Ellie, and called them to the dance floor along with the others when something very serious happens.
- Hi Lollo! Hi Elle! - said Louise - shall we go skating?
- Hi girls! - greeted Lolo
- In a little while - said Ellie - I'm waiting for my guardian to arrive
At that moment Lizzy's cell phone rings.
- Hello - answered Lizzy - Lizzy Eun-Kwan speaking
- Lizzy! Help! I got stuck in the ridge - said Lesllie shivering with cold - The equipment crashed, I can't finish the decision or get it off me, I'm too cold!
- Leslie! Don't worry we're coming to rescue you - said Lizzy
Lizzy turned to Louise, Ellie and Lollo, telling them what happened.
- Leslie got stuck in the ridge - said Lizzy - we must get her out of there fast
- Oh no my guardian! - said Ellie - count on me.
- I knew something bad was happening to her - said Lollo - let's go!
So they all went to the mountain range where Leslie was trapped.
Back to WingsView Mountain Range
Leslie was shivering with cold, hoping the Healing Team would arrive soon. Luz and Luphie also arrived at the scene to help, Louise would lead the rescue and Lonnie was called to retrieve and check the troubled equipment.
- Leslie! We arrived! - said Ellie - let's get you out of here
- Ellie! My Super Wing! - said Leslle - get me out of here!
Ellie tried to get down but Louise warned her.
- Watch out Ellie! - said Louise - it's too steep for you, stay here while Lonnie and I get Leslie off the mountain range
Louise and Lonnie went very slowly and arriving at the place, Lonnie analyzing the equipment asked:
- Hmm, this equipment is poorly adjusted, probably because it was poorly built it did not work as it should - said Lonnie pulling a pair of pliers out of my pocket - hold still Lesllie, I'm going to need to nip it in the bud.
Lonnie was taking off the equipment very carefully.
- Pulling on three - said Louise holding the rope - 1, 2, 3!
- Very well we did - said Louise.
- No avalanche! - said Lonnie
Everything was going well, Leslie, had been successfully pulled, but all this agitation caused a small avalanche.
- We speak too soon! - said Lizzy
- An avalanche is coming our way! - said Lonnie
- No panic - said Louise - let's get out of here! with safety.
Ellie held Leslie who was shivering from the cold, Louise led the way, before the avalanche reached them. taking Lesllie direct to the hospital
WingsView's Hospital
Arriving at the Hospital, Lesllie was wrapped with several blankets so Luphie doing the check up asked:
- Leslie, who gave you the equipment? - Asked Luphie
- It was Lee who gave me that equipment - Lesllie replied - Don't blame her, he didn't know the equipment wouldn't give this kind of problem.
- We understand Leslle - said Ellie who was there to help her Guardian
- But next time, See if the equipment is really safe - said Lollo who was also there to take care of her younger sister
- It's okay - Leslie said.
The end.

Survival Mode.
In ten recent coming-of-age films, Ella Kemp finds the genre thriving—and looking very different than the 1980s might have predicted. Film directors and Letterboxd members weigh in on the specific satisfactions of the genre, especially in a pandemic.
There have been jokes, some more serious than others, about the art that will come out of this time. How many novels about a fast-spreading disease are you betting on? Will Covid-19 be better suited to documentary or fiction? But the art I’m most looking forward to, and revisiting now, is the art made about teenagers going through it.
Physical school attendance, so central to the John Hughes movies of the 1980s, is up in the air for so many. Sports practice, theater clubs, mall hang-outs; the familiar neighborhood beats of a teenager’s life are more confined than ever. All of us have had to tweak our reality to make the best of invasive changes forced upon us during the pandemic. In a sense, it feels like we are all coming of age.
Teenagehood, though, is a particularly tricky time of transition, and we don’t yet know the half of how the pandemic is going to impact today’s young adults—and, by association, tomorrow’s coming-of-age films. But in the last two years alone there have been enough brave new entries in the genre, about young people so enlivening, that there’s both plenty for young film lovers to lose themselves in, and plenty for us slightly older folks to watch and learn from.
So I sought out ten recent coming-of-age films (and several of the directors responsible) to see what these stories teach us about teenagers, and how we might empathize with them. The list—Jezebel, Beats, Zombi Child, Blinded by the Light, Selah and the Spades, The Half of It, Dating Amber, Babyteeth, House of Hummingbird and We Are Little Zombies—is by no means exhaustive. But it allows us to look at several things.
Firstly, that the genre is thriving, considering these titles barely scratch the surface. Secondly, these ten films look a whole lot different than their 1980s counterparts. Six are directed by women. Four tell queer stories or, at least, feature queer characters in a prominent subplot. Seven tell stories about Black people, Asian people, Pakistani people. Only three are from the US.
And: they’re really good. They understand teenagers as angry, energetic, passionate, confused, desperate and deeply intelligent beings, echoing the nuances that we know to be true in real life, but that can often get watered down on the screen.
Tumblr media
Blinded by the Light (co-written and directed by Gurinder Chadha) We Are Little Zombies (written and directed by Makoto Nagahisa) Beats (co-written and directed by Brian Welsh)
The protagonists in these first three films use music to feel their way through panic, brought on by both internal and external circumstances. Screaming another’s lyrics, furiously composing their own anthems, dancing along and sweating out their fear to the beat, the ongoing beat, and nothing more. It’s salvation, it’s release—when you’re left with your own thoughts, the only way to fight through them is to drown them out.
Music acts as a source of enlightenment in Blinded by the Light, directed by Gurinder Chadha (who made 2002’s coming-of-age sports banger Bend it Like Beckham). In Thatcher’s Britain, Pakistani-English Muslim high schooler Javed discovers the music of Bruce Springsteen, and his world bursts wide open. The wisdom and fire of the Boss helps Javed to make sense of his own frustrations; that the film is based on a real journalist’s autobiography makes it all the more potent.
Meanwhile, in Beats, a real-life law enacted in Scotland in the 1990s temporarily banned raves: specifically, the gathering of people around music “wholly or predominantly characterized by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats”. As the UK struggles to contain a youthful, exuberant new counter-culture, the central characters face what it means to enter adulthood. The answer to both: a forbidden rave.
“I have to say, there’s probably no such thing as teenagers without complicated emotions,” We Are Little Zombies writer-director Makoto Nagahisa tells me. The Japanese filmmaker—who loves the genre, known as ‘Seishun eiga’ in Japan—wrestles with the frustration and hopelessness of the world by giving his film’s four orphaned teens the tools, and the permission, to find solace in something other than their everyday life. Following the deaths of their parents, the quartet create their own catchy, cathartic, truth-bomb music; it’s an instant hit with kids across Japan, but the adults miss the point, of course—that the cacophony of superstardom is filling the silence of their mourning.
Nagahisa-san’s film is named after a fictional 8-bit Nintendo Game Boy game that the main character is addicted to. “I used to get through my day relatively painlessly by pretending I was a video game character whenever bad shit happened to me,” he explains. Teenagers “are constantly feeling crushed by reality right now… I want them to know that this is a valid way to escape reality. That reality is just a ‘game’. I want them to know they don’t need to face tragedies, they can just survive. That’s the most important thing!” Who else needed to hear that right now?
Tumblr media
Jezebel (written and directed by Numa Perrier) Zombi Child (written and directed by Bertrand Bonello) Selah and the Spades (written and directed by Tayarisha Poe) House of Hummingbird (written and directed by Kim Bo-ra)
Our next four films turn to technology, mythology, hierarchy and education to animate their protagonists’ lives with a greater purpose. In Jezebel, nineteen-year-old Tiffany finds her way through mourning with a new job, earning money as a cam girl and subsequently developing a bond with one of her clients. There’s a magnetic aura, one that harnesses grief and turns it into something more corrosive as this teen puts all her energy into it. Similarly there’s mysticism in the air in Zombi Child, in which Haitian voodoo gives a bored, heartbroken teenage girl a new purpose as she searches for a way to connect with the one she lost—and with herself.
Selah and the Spades and House of Hummingbird understand the third-party saviour as more of a structure, that of a school or an inspiring teacher. Selah finds herself by doing business selling recreational drugs to her classmates in a faction-led boarding school. Nothing mends a sense of aimlessness like power. This same framework lets Hummingbird’s Eun-hee, a schoolgirl in mid-90s South Korea whose abusive family invest their academic focus in her useless brother, search for love and find connection in her school books—and from the person who’s asking her to read them.
The films on this list are not perfect; some might be criticized for specifically following a formula, the tropes of the coming-of-age film, a little too well. Jezebel lets its protagonist rise and fall with familiarity, while Selah suffers the consequences of her extreme actions, and even Eun-hee reckons with a few recognizable pitfalls. But still, the fact that these films exist is “innately radical”, says Irish writer-director David Freyne, whose queer Irish comedy Dating Amber is covered below. The filmmaker describes the coming-of-age genre as mainstream, but in the best possible sense: “It’s a broadly appealing film,” he says.
This is why, to see these stories reframed with minority voices, with queer voices, is so quietly revolutionary. “The more you see them, the more broadly we see them being enjoyed—the more producers and financiers will realize these stories don’t have to be niche just because they happen to frame a minority voice. Everyone can enjoy it.”
Film journalist and Letterboxd member Iana Murray, a coming-of-age genre fan, echoes Freyne’s thoughts. “Representation is absolutely not the be-all end-all, but I’d love to see more coming-of-age films that reflect my experiences growing up as a woman of color,” she says, before introducing what I’d like to call the Rashomon Effect. “I see it as like one of those films that tell the same events from different perspectives, something like Rashomon or Right Now, Wrong Then,” she explains. “A story becomes even more vibrant when told through a different set of eyes, and that’s what happens when you allow women, people of color, and LGBT people to create coming-of-age narratives.”
Tumblr media
Dating Amber (written and directed by David Freyne) The Half of It (written and directed by Alice Wu) Babyteeth (directed by Shannon Murphy, written by Rita Kalnejais)
Which brings us on nicely to our last three: wildly different titles, each with young protagonists at war with themselves, trying to make sense of their bodies and minds as best they can. In this context, companionship is everything. Finding a platonic soulmate in Dating Amber, a sexual awakening in The Half of It, a first love to make a short life worth living in Babyteeth. Each film is directed with a verve and passion that you know must be personal.
The story of a frustrated boy in the closet in Dating Amber aches with care from Freyne behind the camera, while Alice Wu directs Ellie Chu, the main character in The Half Of It, with patience and the kind of encouragement that quiet girls who live a life between two cultures are rarely given. And with Babyteeth, Shannon Murphy returns Australian cinema firmly to the center of the movie map, with a quintessentially Australian optimism and sense of humor, which Ben Mendelsohn called “delightfully bent”.
These perspectives are specific to each teen, but the intensity transcends genres and borders. It manifests musically, verbally, visually, aesthetically. These teens connect with their favorite music and means of entertainment, but also simply to their favorite clothes and accessories—blue bikinis and green wigs, red neck-scarves and floaty white dresses. These details give the characters ways to reinvent themselves while standing still, which certainly feels apt for a life lived, for now, at home.
Tumblr media
‘Pretty in Pink’ (1986), written by John Hughes and directed by Howard Deutch.
Many argue that the coming-of-age genre peaked with John Hughes, who defined the framework in iconic 1980s films that have his stamp all over them, whether he wrote (Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful) or also directed them (The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Sixteen Candles). Hughes’ world view was of a specifically suburban, white, American corner of the world, which he filled with misfits and ultra-hip soundtracks. “John Hughes was to the genre what The Beatles are to rock and roll,” confirms Letterboxd member Brad, maintainer of the essential coming-of-age movie list Teenage Wasteland.
After Hughes, the genre tumbled, Dazed and Confused, into the 1990s—notable voices include John Singleton with his seminal Boyz n the Hood, and Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho and Good Will Hunting. This was also the decade of Clueless, which informed the bright, female-forward fare of the 2000s, like Mean Girls, The Princess Diaries and the aforementioned Bend it Like Beckham. The last decade has seen new American storytellers step into Hughes’ shoes, including Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird and Little Women), Olivia Wilde and the writers of Booksmart, and the autobiographical voices of Jonah Hill (mid90s) and Shia LaBeouf (Honey Boy, directed by Alma Har’el).
It’s interesting to note—whether it’s the 1860s or the 1980s—that many coming-of-agers from the past decade take place in an earlier period setting. Social media has demanded the upheaval of entire lives, but it seems some filmmakers aren’t yet ready to grapple with its place on screen.
The audience, on the other hand, is far more adaptable. The way we’re watching coming-of-age films has shifted, and it’s more appropriate for the genre than we could have imagined. On the last day of shooting Dating Amber, Freyne recalls one of the young actors asking, “So, is this going to be on Netflix or something?” This is when cinemas were still open.
“That’s often how younger people are devouring content now,” Freyne reasons. His film, in the end, was snapped up by Amazon (a US release date is yet to be announced). “It’s creating a communal experience with the intersection of social media: live streams, fan art, daily messages… It’s made us feel incredibly connected, moreso than I think we would have got with a cinematic release.”
Streaming platforms also cater to one key habit of a younger film lover: the rewatch. The iconic teen films of the 80s embedded their reputations thanks to the eternal allure of the Friday night video store ritual, and constant television replays. These days, it’s only with a film finding a home on Netflix, on Amazon or on Hulu, that a younger person (or, in times of global crisis, any person) can both financially and logistically afford to devote themselves to watching, again and again, these people onscreen that they’ve immediately and irrevocably found a connection with.
It’s always felt hard to be satisfied with just one viewing of a perfect coming-of-age film—observe how many times Iana Murray has logged Call Me By Your Name. What is it about the slippery, universal allure of the genre? It’s possibly as simple as the feeling of being seen in the fog of intergenerational confusion. Says Nagahisa-san: “Grown-ups think of teenagers like zombies. Teenagers think of grown-ups like zombies. We’re never able to understand what others are feeling inside.”
“The reaction is always emotive rather than intellectual,” adds Freyne. “There’s something quite visceral and instinctive about coming-of-age films; it’s an emotional experience rather than an analytical one.” That emotional experience is tied up in the fact that we often experience coming-of-age movies just as we ourselves are coming of age, establishing an unbreakable connection between a film and a specific period in our lives. MovieMaestro Brad explains it best: “There is a bit of nostalgia in a lot of these films that take me back to my younger days, when life was simple.”
But that’s not to say only those coming of age can appreciate a coming-of-age film. On her favorite coming-of-age film, Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women, Murray explains, “It doesn’t see coming-of-age as exclusive to teenagers, because that process of growth is really about transition and change.” (In a similar vein, Kris Rey’s new comedy I Used to Go Here, in select theaters and on demand August 7, meets Kate Conklin, played by Gillian Jacobs, in a sort of quarter-life-crisis, needing to grow down a bit in order to grow up.)
Tumblr media
Natalia Dyer in ‘Yes, God, Yes’ (2019), directed by Karen Maine.
There is endless praise, conflict and wonder to be found in the ten films mentioned above—and all the ones we haven’t even gone near (Karen Maine’s orgasmic religious comedy Yes, God, Yes, now available on demand in the US, deserves an honorary mention, as does Get Duked!, Ninian Doff’s upcoming stoner romp in the Scottish Highlands). The thing about this genre is it’s raw, it’s alive, and it’s always in transition. Just when you might think it’s gone out of fashion, it emerges in a new and fascinating form. And yet, there are still so many filmmakers who haven’t tackled the genre. I asked my interviewees who they’d like to see take on a story of teens in transition.
“I’d love to see Tarantino’s take on a coming-of-age tale,” says master of the genre himself, MovieMaestro/Brad. Murray gives her vote to Lulu Wang, saying, “I love the specificity she brought to The Farewell, I think it would transfer well to a genre that needs to escape clichés.” Freyne, meanwhile, wants to see if Ari Aster might have another story about young people in him. Maybe something a bit less lethal next time.
Ultimately, “you write from empathy, not from experience,” says Freyne. I think the same goes for watching, too. It won’t be tomorrow, and it might not be this year, but eventually, the world will emerge from Covid-19. What will we have learned from the films that we watched while we were waiting? From the sadness, the angst, the determination, the rage and the passion?
Nagahisa-san already knows, and his advice is everything we need right now: “You don’t need others’ approval of who you are, as long as you understand and approve of yourself. Do whatever pops up in your mind. Live your life without fear or despair. Just survive.”

For the ask game, "Santa's on his way" - Jughead is a mall Santa, Betty is the photographer!
Hey babe, sorry it’s taken a while to get this out here. As I told you on Discord, there’s going to be two parts. I hope you enjoy what I have so far! This is entirely unedited, I will post it on the Archive fully edited when I get the chance!
Santa’s On His Way
“He is the skinniest Santa that I have ever seen,” Betty told Cheryl as she adjusted her tripod. “Where on earth did you find him?”
“He applied for the job,” Cheryl answered, tapping her long red nails on her travel coffee mug. “His background check came back clean and I couldn’t see any reason not to hire him. We’ll just have to make sure he’s padded really well. The kids won’t know the difference, they’ll be excited that they get to meet Santa. Oh come on Betty, don’t look at me like that. He was better than a lot of the guys I interviewed. One of them came in drunk and another one smelled like Philly cheese steak. I couldn’t very well unleash either of those men on the general public. Try and be nice—”
“Hey, Miss Blossom, I think this costume is a little too large for me.”
“I could have sworn I ordered one in your size!” Cheryl said. “Hold on, I’m going to check my office and see if it was actually delivered. Try and get to know your photographer while I’m gone, Forsythe.”
“Forsythe?” Betty raised any eyebrow as Cheryl clacked off.
“Or you could just call me Nick,” he replied as he hitched up his pants.
“Nick. Haha, very funny.”
“Everybody calls me Jughead. Trust me, I don’t think it’s as bad as Forsythe,” he said. “So, what’s your name?”
“Elizabeth. But everybody calls me Betty.” She lifted her camera and made sure it was charged for the 100th time that morning before taking a preliminary shot of Jughead.
Jughead frowned as the shutter clicked. “Do you have to take pictures?” he asked.
“It’s part of the job. Or did you not read your contract carefully before you signed on the dotted line?”
“Of course I read my contract!” Jughead groused. “But there was nothing in it about taking pictures when a child isn’t sitting in my lap.”
“No pouting! Santa Claus is coming to town!” Betty joked.
“I am Santa,” Jughead reminded her, rolling his eyes. “I think I’ve already come to town.”
“Well, you better not pout all the same. Kids don’t want to see a grumpy Santa and I can tell you parents will be less than thrilled to have to pay for pictures if you aren’t smiling.”
Jughead faked a grin. “Are you happy?”
Betty shook her head, her antler headband jingled. “You look like a serial killer. Don’t you know how to smile nicely?”
“Do you get paid to tell the mall Santas how to do their jobs?” Jughead retorted.
Betty was about to reply when she was interrupted by Cheryl.
“Your suit was in the office!” Cheryl said, holding it out towards him. “You better go to the locker room and get changed. Don’t waste my time on your account of being a hooligan! The kids are going to start lining up to see you any minute and you cannot allow them to see you as anything other than Christopher Kringle!”
“Cheryl, you really need to relax.”
“Christmas is a billion dollar industry! There is no way I’m going to relax. We don’t want people taking their children to Greendale to see Santa when they see Jughead as a civilian!”
“A civilian?” Betty shook her head. “You’re crazy, Cher.”
Jughead returned a few minutes later, fully clothed as Santa Claus. “Okay,” he said. “I’m ready. Are you happy?”
“Very. I have to go and do a few things in the office. You two enjoy yourselves! Toodles!”
.
Betty stifled a yawn. There was nothing she hated more than having to go to the mall early on a Sunday morning. She usually went to mass and had breakfast with an elderly couple at her church. She looked in her rearview mirror and fixed her elf ears headband before pulling herself out of her car.
She wandered into the mall and found Jughead lounging on Santa’s chair, checking his text messages.
“You look like you can’t deal this morning,” he commented.
Two weeks with parents and kids from hell had cemented their status as friends. She smiled at him and handed him a cup of coffee. “I stopped at Starbucks for you. I didn’t know what you liked, so I just ordered you an espresso.”
“That’s fine with me,” Jughead replied, taking it gratefully. “I had to sew a tutu last night. I barely got any sleep. I’d drink gas station coffee. I can’t be jolly and bright without caffeine.”
“Really? Is that all it takes?” Betty teased. “If I had known that, I would have hooked you up to a caffeine drip the first day we met.”
“I’m sure I wasn’t that bad,” Jughead replied.
“You looked like a serial killer.”
“Stop saying I looked like a serial killer! I did not look like a serial killer.”
“You weren’t smiling.”
Jughead shook his head. “You know what, new rule. I can’t talk until I finish my coffee. Because you’re annoying when I’m running on 3 hours of sleep.”
“I was sewing a tutu,” Jughead replied.
“A tutu?” Betty repeated.  “What are you not telling me, Jones?”
Jughead cleared his throat. “I have a younger sister. I take care of her because our parents died in a car accident. I don’t like to talk about it, I know you’re sorry. We’re fine.”
“What’s your sister’s name?” Betty asked.
“Don’t laugh, okay? Her name is Forsythia—”
“Forsythia?”  Betty raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t your name Forsythie?”
“It was my father’s idea. I think if my mom had it her way, she would have named us something a little more normal like Ellie and James. But dad insisted and he always got his way.”
“Will you two stop standing around? We only have a few more minutes until customers show up!” Cheryl interrupted.
Betty shook her head. “Coming!” she turned and smoothed an errant strand of hair away from Jughead’s face. “I’ll talk to you later.”
.
The next day, Betty showed up at work and Jughead wasn’t there. Reggie Mantle, the Santa Claus from the year before, was sitting in his chair looking less like Santa and more like he belonged on the December page in a firefighter calendar.
She barely acknowledged his presence before going to her cousin’s office. “Where’s Jughead!?” she demanded. “I thought we both agreed Reggie wasn’t a good Santa!”
“Don’t get your Christmas panties in a twist. He couldn’t come in because he needed to take his sister to the doctor.”
“Reggie?” Betty raised any eyebrow. “Surely you could have found somebody else. I thought you hated him because he slept with you and didn’t call afterwards.”
“I called everyone on my substitute list and he was the only one who could fill in,” Cheryl explained. “Believe me, I would have rather it been anyone else but him. Beggars can’t be choosers though, so he’s here. You don’t have to like it, you just have to work with him.”
Betty sighed in exasperation. “Fine, I will.”
After work was over, Betty texted Jughead.
B - Tell me where you live. I’m going to swing by and bring you something to eat.
She waited for a few seconds and then her phone pinged.
J - You really don’t have to do that.
B - I WANT too!!!
J - JB has the flu, highly contagious.
B - I got the flu shot. I’ll take my chances. What do you guys want to eat?
There was a while between replies. She took the time to clock out and put her coat on.
J - She asked if you could bring some dakgaejang from Eun’s.
B - I’m getting in the car now. What would you like?
J - I’m game with anything you bring.
B - Okay. I’ll see you soon!
She put in order with a local Korean restaurant and went to pick it up. When she got into her car again, Jughead had messaged her his address. She plugged it into her GPS and followed the instructions exactly.
When she got to their apartment, she grabbed the big brown paper sack and took the elevator. She didn’t know why she was suddenly so nervous to see him. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Jughead opened it wearing a fisherman’s sweater and jeans. He looked thinner than he did when he was wearing his Santa suit.
She swallowed, barely able to look at him because she was suddenly aware of how attractive he was and how messy she looked. “Here you go!” she held out the bag for him.
“Thank you,” Jughead replied, leaning against the door and looking at her. “Do you want to come in and eat with us? We’re watching Christmas movies on Netflix. Also, I think JB would like to meet you.”
Betty couldn’t think of a reason not to stay, so she nodded weakly and followed Jughead inside.

predictably: top 5 beyond evil scenes/moments. but also if you want to, i’m gonna be totally narcissistic and ask: top 5 rahul fics/moments from rahul fics 🥺 i have some others in my head but i’ll let you answer this ask first 😭 love youuuuuuu 🥰💙💛
hii rahul mio caro !!! great questions omg <3
top 5 beyond evil scenes (or at least those that come to mind skdsnj):
juwon-ah, ep 16 i mean. is anyone surprised look at my url LMAO i just. the way dongsik offers himself to juwon while simultaneously juwon lets himself be at the mercy of dongsik... it's SO fascinating their dynamic, they both want to give each other all they can possibly give and at the same time are telling the other: don't break yourself into pieces for me. and this scene is like The Culmination of all that. dongsik telling juwon to arrest him and then taking his hand, smiling at him with so much softness and juwon completely breaking down. changed my life forever no joke
I WILL- I WILL .............. GO TO HELL. ep 15. you and me and ellis have talked about this scene so much already but GOD it's the guilt that's swallowing juwon whole and the way all he wants to do is atone, for his own sins, FOR HIS FATHER'S SINS, and he's sinking to his knees in front of dongsik saying, promising he will go to hell and suffer immeasurable torture just so dongsik won't have to break anymore AND so he, juwon, can get what he thinks he deserves. MAN I WILL NEVER RECOVER FROM THIS. N E V E R .
the scene from ep 16 i giffed this morning (here) like it's SUCH a pivotal scene in my opinion. we see dongsik tell juwon straight out that he did nothing wrong and he's not at fault for the horrible acts his father committed. he doesn't have to sacrifice himself. for him. that's not what he's asking of him, actually he's not asking anything of him if not that he doesn't put himself in further danger. and i also think the way juwon is so quiet during most of the scene is so interesting and important. we've seen juwon say he's gonna break himself into pieces, go to hell, to atone. now he's being told he doesn't have to do that. he shouldn't do that. and all he says is: first, he won't apologize. secondly, "i'm sorry". we see how much dongsik's opinion and feelings matter to him and we see it in the rest of the episode too, in how they team up to bring down han ki hwan, how they're partners, they've been for a while but now they've elevated to another level. they're one. SORRY I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS SMKDSNDSK
the scene in ep 8 where jaeyi finds out about her mother. SO heartbreaking i was literally sobbing and choi sung eun did a FANTASTIC job. the denial, the realisation when she sees her mother's hairpin, the way she breaks down. my dear, lovely jaeyi :((((
the scene at the end of ep 7 where juwon and dongsik go to arrest jinmuk. JUWON'S ENTRANCE YOU ARE SO SEXY AND COOL I AM IN LOVE WITH YOU- and "are you here alone?" "of course not" and juwon TURNS AND SO DOES JINMUK AND WE SEE DONGSIK'S SHADOW I'M AAAAAAAA the cinematography ???? the pathos ????? LITERALLY UNPARALLELED. ep 7 is a masterpiece of his own.
honorable mentions:
in ep 8, the date (yes.) scene, "i'm curious because i don't understand." and the way dongsik ponders over that for a second and then explains. absolutely adore how much they try to understand each other throughout the series. also in ep 8, "i'm glad you're here" brb crying
just juwon's cool girl era. ep 10. he's sitting on a bench looking like he just got over a horrible break up and he now could conquer the world. sunglasses. long black coat. new haircut. "dongsik is gonna WISH he still had me."
the scene in ep 2 where dongsik helps a young disabled man who's lost in the rain, gives him his shoes, his umbrella, and juwon looks at him like he's never seen anything or anyone like him
i could go on and on and on ...... i tried to also choose scenes neither you nor ellis had chosen. for variety sdskdsn (except you know. those scenes.)
okay this is so long already sorry skdksmds
top 5 moments from your(rahul's) fics !!! <3
it's fresh in my mind because i read it recently, so i could just say all of inyeon and it'd be true BUT i particularly loved all the coming out scenes in the fic ANDDDD the scene where taek's dad shows jung hwan the piece of newspaper with his graduating class' pic. IT'S SOOOOO. it made me cry so much because it's him saying, you are part of the family. you have always been. always. 'The article is neatly cut out and tucked into the folder, the same importance given to it as every other snippet, as everything else that Taek has won.' and '“I watched you grow up into a good man, Jung Hwan-ah. You’re good to him, good for him. There’s nothing more a parent could ask for their child. Just take care of him well.”'
OF COURSE i have to mention paper planes. [every mention of the c-word- NO JK] the scene after they've confessed and they find the last paper plane chanon made for pom before everything went to shit ...... i LOVE LOVE LOVE the way you used paper planes in this fic, what they represent. fickle moments. and yet this one stood the test of time. and so did chanon and pom's relationship. AAAAAAA !!!!!! '"I know I promised no trajectory without you. So here’s something to remember me by until I come back, and I can hold your hand on our flight path." Chanon’s eyes flicker up to Pom’s. “Thanks for coming back, Non,” says Pom, sitting up with his disheveled hair and his perfect smile, blankets bunched up around his waist. [...] “Thanks for giving me a home to come back to,” replies Chanon, holding him tightly.'
also the scene in paper planes where pom goes to chanon's house when they're teens .... chanon's mum making chinese food for pom :'))))) also loved the little detail you added that chanon took extra chinese classes when he was younger!! it was soooo lovely <33
i ADOREEE life gets hard (but these days been meaning more) [side note i didn't remember why you titled it that skdsdns] and especially when achara comes into the scene AND the ending .... just the whole idea of the perspective of the trees, it's so lovely and original and THE EXECUTION ! spectacular trulyyyy 'The garden isn’t empty anymore, much less the house, both decorated and made lovely and into a home by two men who love each other and their daughter more than anything else in the world. Every week, their friends come over with their own warmth and plates and pots of food, setting everything up neatly on the table and laughing loudly and joking around as the day stretches into long night, as things are meant to be. This garden was meant to be loved, this house was meant to be lived in -- and now after such a long time, it finally is. Kao will keep planting more vegetables in this garden with care. Pete will remember to mow the grass every so often, keeping his husband company and buying him gardening supplies. Achara will drift back and forth on the swing, teasing her fathers.  And the trees? The trees will keep watch for as long as they need to. Such is the way of life -- and they’ve never grown stronger.'
THE ENTIRETY OF SMALL THINGS ARE SPECTACULAR SIGHTS. absolutely adore the fact that every snippet is from one of the kids' pov ANDDD it's just so so sweet it makes me :')))) the way the kids are so happy for pom, the sappiness (affectionate) it's just everything one might need to heal from [gestures vaguely] tgg “No, I mean,” says Pang, fiddling with his shirt, “I think I speak for all of us when I say that we’re happy for you. P’Chanon is really nice, and he makes good cupcakes, and he sends you flowers.”
OKAY I'VE BEEN REREADING PARTS OF YOUR FICS FOR LIKE AN HOUR SKDSMDS :HELP: i fell into a hole sorry lmao but also honorable mentions (entire fics):
jeong (I DIDN'T KNOW WHICH MOMENT TO CHOOSE :YELLINGCAT:)
how do you love when you're frightened? [KANIMANO SUPREMACY ALWAAAAYYYYYS]
don't mind growing old with you by my side
my weary heart has come to rest in yours BUT ESPECIALLY: '“You,” says Chanon, very quietly. Pom whips to him, Chanon’s face wide open and vulnerable, almost like he’s caught in a breath. “I wished for you.”'
wherever you're going, i'm going (that way) [i mean. MOON RIVER AS THE TITLE.]
and he got fight stories to tell
my feet are drawn to you [WHEN WILL PERTH READ THIS !!!!!!]
this is so so long i apologize :sob: i've been at it for 3 years . anyway . i love you so so much rahul and love your writing and our conversations and. yeah. <3 :^)

all of my buttons considered their partner's naming preferences when they chose the names for their kids, so a lot of the answers kind of refer back to this ask about names (i linked it in a previous reblog, but i'm including it again)
as i mentioned before, ellie and gray have hyacinth and unnamed younger son. hyacinth is (probably, i reserve my right to change my mind later) telekinetic and has a larger brain range than gray (i'm not sure how long, somewhere between 1 foot and maybe a few feet at most), which ellie finds extremely manageable (she can go to another room in the same house and hyacinth can't hear her thoughts anymore - she feels downright lucky that this is hyacinth's brain range). unnamed younger son continues to be unnamed and not have a set pollard score (if he's a ment, he's probably a telepath, but as i said i find the idea of him not being a ment to be kind of compelling). i don't have middle names picked out for either of them (ellie would want to try to work sally's name somewhere in there, but she wouldn't be able to find a place other than hyacinth's middle name, so maybe hyacinth sally?? but i don't know how much she'd like the sound of that name). hyacinth is approximately 4 years older than unnamed younger son.
(possible names i have debated but not settled on for ellie and gray's unnamed younger son are ash (ellie likes ash but doens't like that his name would be ash black because it's a gray black situation and she insists on naming her kids better than gray's father did. gray jokes that it could be the start of a family tradition), basil (ellie thinks it feels very british, which isn't necessarily a bad thing so much as it is just a thing (value-neutral), but she doesn't like the alliteration in basil black), and william (for the flower, sweet william).)
i've said before that ella and ambrose have identical twin girls. their daughters are each given a korean first name and an english middle name (ella wants both sides of their family to be represented in their names. also, ella knows ambrose has adopted an english name since leaving korea, and she wants her daughters to have that option for themselves. she would never force her daughters to use one name over the other and they use their first (korean) names with family (and, i think, speak korean a lot at home too - ambrose and hope canonically speak korean, and ella starts learning a few months after she starts dating ambrose) but if they ever decide they want that option, she's picked some names out for them in advance). i always feel like i'm cheating my buttons out of angst when i don't make their kids ments, but i feel in my heart that her daughters are both pollard 5s.
their eldest daughter is named ji-eun, by ambrose's request, and ella picks hyacinth for her middle name. their youngest daughter doesn't have a first name yet, and only sort of has a middle name. ella would want to use hope's name (her relationship with hope is important to her and hope is her family member that likes ambrose best. it's also this way of ella saying to hope "i love you. i want you to be part of my life. i want you to be part of their lives"). originally, i was leaning towards ella using hope's middle name for her youngest's middle name (thus leading to her having no name at all, since i don't know what hope's middle name would be). however, if their youngest goes by their first name with family, then they're not really running into that much of a risk of a "two hopes" scenario. so i think her middle name is just hope.
(part of the reason their youngest daughter doesn't have a first name yet is that i haven't really sat down and learned the naming conventions (rules, taboos, etc.) of korean names yet (and i would want to do that before even trying to come up with a first name for her). i'm not an expert in any way and i could absolutely be wrong here, but i did a cursory search when i first started thinking of names and saw that naming a child after an elder or relative is not typical in korea. however, ambrose suggests the name ji-eun first, so ella assumes that that's just a convention that they're not following and goes about naming her children accordingly.)
elle and kent are a little trickier, mostly because i'm not 100% sure if they have a kid. elle likes the idea of having one kid, but she doesn't feel like she needs to be a parent to be happy and fulfilled in her life, if that makes sense. she will be happy and fulfilled in her life whether she has a kid or not, it's just that what makes her happy and what fulfills her will look different. and she loves her relationship with kent more than she loves a possible hypothetical child that may never exist. and she and kent did not talk about having kids before they got married: like with most major life milestones between them (moving in together, marriage), they kind of just stumbled into them by accident. so if elle brought up the idea of maybe having a kid and kent freaked out even a bit, elle would simply say that they don't have to have kids. i can picture them having a kid, but only really if it's unplanned, if that makes sense?
so they might have one kid, probably not a ment (i think they'd take after kent's pollard score). i haven't decided on if they'd have a boy or a girl yet. kent likes to pull names from greek mythology, but elle is very clear with him that she wants what she calls "names that people have". so, for example, to pull from annie and cass's names: cassandra is a name that comes from greek myth, yes, but there are also just people named cassandra out there in the world. if you met someone named cassandra, you probably wouldn't assume that they were named after a mythological figure. antigone, on the other hand, is clearly a name from greek myth, and if someone was named antigone it would be very clear exactly where their name came from, and elle doesn't want that for her kid's name.
so if they had a son, his name would be jason nicholas. if they had a daughter, it would be a little more complicated. they end up choosing the name daphne for a daughter (it's from greek myth, but it's also just a name, and it's also a flower, which elle likes because it complements the name hyacinth). elle wouldn't like daphne hyacinth as a name (too floral), so she'd have to come up with a middle name too. i think elle would suggest to kent, in a kind of "only if it makes you happy, never if it makes you sad" way, that her middle name be maria, for kent's mother. so if they have a daughter, they'd end up with daphne maria (there's also a version where i think they just give her two middle names, so maybe daphne maria hyacinth?).
(i named elle and kent's kids quite a while after seeing the post about what kind of names the ros would like and so i picked jason and daphne as names just based on the knowledge that kent likes names from greek mythology and that elle wants the names to be fairly "normal". imagine my surprise when i found the ask again to link it and both those names were on the suggested names list for examples of the kinds of names kent would like.)
i did pull names from the ask for ellery and glitch's kids, though. ellery is very similar to elle in that she wants her kids to have names that aren't immediately identifiable as being drawn from somewhere or in reference to something. what ends up kind of unintentionally happening is that glitch picks the first names (with ellery judiciously using her veto power) and ellery picks out the middle names (ellery doesn't mind that her kids are named after poets, btw. she knows that glitch loves poetry and that, more than that, it's this strong connection he has to his mother, who is a professor of african american poetry. so it's this kind of connection to him and to his mother that she likes). that's how they end up with their eldest son, langston nicholas. glitch picks the first name maya for their daughter, who's born about 3 years later. both of their kids take after glitch, so they have his pollard score (ellery feels bad about how glad she is that they take after his side of the family instead of hers).
picking maya's middle name is a bit more of a process. it's revealed in k (i think in chapter 8?) and glitch's (i think maybe chapter 12?) routes that glitch calls k "kenzie" as a nickname. so ellery takes kenzie as a starting place and it later becomes mackenzie. so their daughter's name is maya mackenzie (ellery explains the choice to glitch later as: "langston's named for his uncle from my side of the family. maya should be named for her uncle from your side of the family" i think it's actually a surprisingly emotional moment when kent finds out that they named/are going to name their kid after him).
i know the least about ellis and sally's kids. i know at least that they have two kids and that at least one of them is a precog, but they don't have genders or names or age differences. personally, i think they adopt at least one kid. sally has a whole thing about how her dads adopted her (as two norms willingly taking in and loving a precog child when other people might have stayed away because of her precognition) and i think it might be meaningful for her to be able to do that, too. if one child is adopted and the other child is biologically theirs, i think the biological child is the precog, but i'm not settled on that lol.
ellis doesn't actually mind that his kid(s) (adopted or biological) could be a precog. in his opinion, that's the easiest type of ment they could be, since they would only feel his feelings instead of reading his mind. in his view, his kid knowing if he's mad isn't as big of an obstacle as his kid hearing all of his thoughts. he does make it clear to sally that he never wants his kids to feel like they have to be an alarm system for him the way that sally is. he wants them to be kids without having to feel any kind of responsibility towards or worry about his safety.
i had the thought the other day that maybe they adopt their first child and that, after they already have been chosen to adopt a child, they find out that, whoops, they're pregnant too (mostly because i have this image in my mind of them going to their families to tell them that they're having a baby, and everyone is like "??? yes? we know? you told us about this months ago?" and they have to say "no. we're having a baby". but i'm not committed to that).
there's also a possibility that they just adopt both of their children (in this case, one of them is still a precog). if his kids were both adopted, he wouldn't have to worry about passing down his mind blindness to them, for example. and ellis isn't some kind of macho "i need to carry on my bloodline" kind of guy - he wants to be a dad, not the progenitor of some great lineage, and there's so much more to being a family than shared blood.
in terms of names, i don't have any picked out, but i think they kind of go along with sally's tendency towards long names with nicknames. of course, the eldest child's middle name is either nicholas or hyacinth (depending on if they're a boy or a girl). the kind of names they'd toss around are things like theodore (teddy) ( ;) <- this wink is for vilna if she sees this), benjamin (ben), edward (ed), samuel or samantha (sam), isabelle (izzy), katherine (katie), elizabeth (beth), dorothy (dot).
i had way too many thoughts today about the gray/ellie pregnancy drama
