just think for like. a second. if you have a secret. a REALLY big secret, that you're deeply insecure about and that you know your trusted lifelong friends are judgmental about. then...very obviously...opening up to a random stranger who you have no connection with, who you won't feel too much of a loss about if the conversation goes wrong...is WAY easier. she's never had a positive experience with a demon before, so he's compelling. he's sympathetic to a part of her that all of her loved ones hate. of course she's going to want to connect with him. why wouldn't she??

And you might discover that theyre the best winter clothes youve ever worn because of COURSE they would be if theyve kept this culture warm in harsh winters for thousands of years.

Yes, you are allowed to join those Cambodians in that local holiday theyre celebrating during your visit if they literally invited you to it. They would not have invited you if they didnt want you to participate. And in the process you might learn a lot about a culture you never wouldve interacted with and you can all have a laugh together about your clumsy but genuine attempts at getting your footwork right in one of their traditional dances.

Yes, you are also allowed to ask if you can participate in something from the local culture you are visiting. Sometimes you will get "sorry, thats a closed practice" but in my experience most of the time you'll get "of course, let me show you how to do this!" And in my experience people tend to appreciate when others make an active effort in sharing their culture and wont stone you to death if youre clumsy about it while youre learning. I guarantee that the local children doing all of this for the first time too make the same mistakes you do and they can tell if youre being disrespectful or genuine.

So much "cultural appropriation" discourse really starts to sound like "you cant participate or visit any other cultures if youre from a Colonial Culture and have to stay in your little box and never relate to other people"

Driving is so overstimulating. Like, I don't even really hate driving. Sometimes I actually think it's kinda fun. But, it's an incredibly taxing mental & physical task that we treat like nothing.

Like, if someone tells you they just did 30 minutes of exercise or 30 minutes of math problems or essay writing and now they need to rest for a bit, you'd be like yeah, obviously.

But when it's 30 minutes of driving that you were doing, you're just expected to roll right into your next activity with no pause whatsoever.

A lot (not nearly all, but a lot) of the problems with car culture stem from the fact that our society refuses to acknowledge the strain and responsibility involved in piloting a two ton brick of steel propelled by controlled explosions.

We treat it like it's as simple as walking instead of a complex skill which requires intense focus. And I just think a lot of stuff would be better, if that reality was actually taken into account.

If youre a young inexperienced queer, sit down with me. Im making you tea, cooking you dinner, and then im going to tell you something that I had to learn the hard way and had so many unnecessary falling outs and the losses of friendships that never should've been friendships in the first place over:

Just because someone is queer, doesnt mean they are a good person for you to be around. Being queer doesnt automatically make somebody a good person, an understanding person, an accepting person, or even just a good person for YOU to be around. Being queer alone is not an indicator that a friendship is either warranted or will work out. I know that you are desperate for other queer friends irl, but do not go rushing into the first queer people you meet.
