OH! i think you brought up a very good point, about the drivers risking and being encouraged to risk their own health, and internalizing that as a good thing.

i think this dismissal of pain is found in all sports, and even in other real life situations too. for some reason, we have a strange glorification toward enduring pain? even when in situations where one might not need to. it is genuinely admirable what some of us can power through but you can guarantee praises, admiration, and positive comments when someone is revealed to have pushed through an illness or pain or bad health condition in order to continue their work.

there is also a weird sort of backlash when someone expresses desire for comfort too. now maybe part of it is my own environment, but "suck it up" or "deal with it" or "do you see me complaining?" is kinda a common response to pain or discomfort being expressed. not to mention all the jokes people made of "lol i just sleep it off" in response to concern about health, jokes that i unfortunately did also make before.

suffering, especially in silence, is like a badge of honor.

as for what lewis said about AC, i feel this is harder to explain. this is just a vague idea i have, but i think it has to do with a subconscious fear, a realization that you had suffered where it wasn't necessary (i'm not the only one who thought AC is one of those things that probably could have been added much earlier the moment it was brought up, right?). people reacting similarly can be found in other situations too. a sort of feeling of unfairness, like why did i have to go through all of that, and it's part of why i am special, but now you are telling me i don't need to.
