which is, really, i think, one of the main reasons shauna doesnt believe in the wilderness religion, but yeah. i just think its interesting

All things considered this is very far down on the list of things that matter in Yellowjackets and certainly not one of the biggest issues the show has right now, but I really don't like what they've done with Gen this season.

She HAD a personality in season two, or at least, more of a personality than Melissa did. She was a bitch, like Mari, but I always felt like she had this vitriolic edge to her that Mari didn't. Mari dunks on people because she wants to come off as cooler and funnier than them, Gen dunks on people because she wants them to be hurt. Mari's bitchiness is performative, Gen does it solely for herself. She's paranoid and suspicious and assumes the worst of people. And whereas Mari always came off (to me anyway) like her turning to Lottie's side was her wanting to be 'in' with the group that was getting considerably stronger in the cabin, Gen and Melissa's acceptance of their situation and the supernatural nature of the wilderness always felt pretty self-driven. They saw what was in front of them, shrugged, and ran with it because it was just what had to happen... And fuck, maybe they kinda liked it. (All of which, as an aside, feels like it flows fine into Melissa's season three upgrade; her level headedness in the face of her situation is what gives her the drive to cozy up with the girl she views as strong and purposeful.)

I won't deny that all these observations are based on barely a few lines of dialogue being connected together with red string on a pinboard, but as someone who loves to check up on the background Yellowjackets I always felt like there was SOMETHING there. And that something is really not coming across in season three Gen. Her being a new hunter was unexpected but nice, but pretty much everything else has just been her being a grovelling, cowering follower that either desperately tries to appeal to the stronger members of the team or get batted around by them. There's none of that venom, ego or independence we see in season two, just this scared, wimpy follower.

And the funny part is, I don't even think that's a bad direction for Gen! I don't think she'd be an especially brave person or have principles that she sticks to, I could see it all eventually breaking down and the venomous facade slipping away to reveal the coward underneath. And I do, on paper, love the idea of Melissa turning on and using Gen for Shauna's benefit and then falling back in with her when Shauna disappoints her. But because this change in personality happens entirely between seasons and Gen is reintroduced to us in what seems like a comparatively good place compared to the hardships of season two, there's kind of no reason for it at all. I feel like this role of the team punching bag who says desperate things you pity her over was the role Mari sometimes served in past seasons, like Lottie's cousin diss or when she campaigned hard for Lottie in season two, and now that they've been doing some great stuff with Mari this season they wanted someone else to fill the role... Even if that role wasn't what the character was like previously.

We don't know exactly what happened with Mya and it could have been up to any number of things, but I do feel somewhat bad for Vanessa having to step into Gen's shoes as well. She's done perfectly fine with what she's been asked to do this season, but I definitely don't think the actress change is helping. Not that many people were paying attention to Gen to begin with, but having the character change face and personality at once only makes the transition stand out more. Or, if you weren't paying attention to begin with, Gen's actions this season are pretty much your only frame of reference for her, which I've seen in the rising sentiment against Gen in the fandom. Mostly as a joke, but only because she's too minor to have any real impact. Which begs the question, why not just kill Gen in the cabin fire and have Robin or Britt step into this role? Lord knows they could use something to do. I love Gen Yellowjackets but ultimately she is just an expendable background character they're probably never going to do anything important with (unless they pull another Melissa next season lmao) and part of me would rather she just die than see the writers use her for whatever the plot calls for.

Chapter 2 Beta Update~

--Nearly all of Ch2 is available, EXCEPT: The "America" backstory when talking with Lottie (it's just half finished). Overall around ~22k words added, and a few thousand to Chapter 1.

--Reworked the Sex/Gender/Gender Presentation System.

--New and Revised MC Dialogue to Ch1, depending on what Occupation you choose. Not all has been changed, more planned later in the month.

--Various typo fixes, small re-writes and bug fixes.

I wanted to get more done, but alas ><;; 🙏🏽 some IRL came up that i really need to deal with. BUT! I managed to get Ch2 from beginning to end! I hope yall will enjoy the last half of Ch2, I'm very happy with it overall! :"))))
