@radiation Pimothy Pimling’s optimism differs from say, SpongeBob’s in the sense that it doesn’t stem so much from naïveté, a sheltered life or childishness but is in fact a trauma response, Pim is a 34 year old man who has been beaten down consistently by life and is from an extremely dysfunctional family (to whom he was likely the eldest sibling and was saddled with most of the responsibilities of care taking and mediating from a young age) and his coping mechanism is literally to look for positives and put kindness into the world, in much the same way that some people’s trauma response is to do the exact opposite. This is not to say that he is a healthy or more evolved individual, he basically gaslights himself into being positive at times and has a savior complex, and can become very unstable when his idea of himself is challenged (as seen in Enchanted Forest for example). But he is by no means just a silly or one dimensional character, he makes the choice every day to look on the bright side and be a good person likely because if he stopped doing so he would become insane or be crushed under the harsh realities of a world that constantly tortures and brutalizes him. Yet he doesn’t exist as many of these types of characters do just to be the butt of the joke and be brutalized for laughs, he, like Charlie, exists as a complex character in his own right as well as a deconstruction of a common character archetype and more importantly, he is the glue that holds the smiling friends together
