SO a hogwarts au where iruma is a secret squib.

now. squibs are useless to magical society because they can't do magic. they do, however, hold greater value than common muggles because while they aren't able to use magic, they still have magical blood. therefore:

squibs are like one level above house elves.

squibs are kept secret

if a squib is kept secret, they can die under mysterious circumstances and no one will know or care

killing a squib means less undesirable blood to potentially ruin magical bloodlines

magically powerful blood > no magic blood

blood magic isnt banned

squibs are the ideal human sacrifice.

so iruma is a squib who's been adopted by headmaster sullivan and taken into the school as a means of protecting him, because his parents were about to make a blood sacrifice out of him to encourage eternal life or wealth or something. but they botched the ritual so it releases a large energy flare and sullivan, being a concerned citizen, checks it out and just, snatches iruma away.

sullivan doesn't want to keep this kid a secret his whole life, because that's just an upgrade from when iruma was kept a secret, given some 'kind words' ("please") and treated like a house elf.

sullivan also decides he can't just publicise that iruma is a squib. that's just asking for someone to like, kill the poor boy. not that he isn't powerful enough to stop any attacks, but better safe than sorry amirite

logical course of action: send iruma to babyls (hogwarts), pretend he's a Normal Wizard Child and hope for best teehee

nothing could possibly go wrong, right?

[ iruma manages to get azz on the day he visits diagon alley bc he accidentally beats the shit out of azz who is a puny 11 year old wizard boy easily impressed by physical strength, which the average witch/wizard does not bother to cultivate. clara is a distant relative of the lovegoods who finds herself attached to iruma and azz when they help each other escape the short yet ominous plague doctor who patrols the corridors at night. iruma kicks witch ass and ends up as minister of magic and proves that squibs are cooler than witches by, as a squib, heading his harem of powerful witches to take over the world ]

ooooo tell me about squire by sara alfageeh

OK so first thing u gotta know is its a graphic novel and the art is super duper cool i absolutely love the character designs. its a fantasy novel and its setting is based off like. the middle east but you also have elements from the ottoman empire and like. not a standard european fantasy setting so its very fun. similar concepts translated into different cultures

here’s some art from the end (like comcept art/character design pages)

anyway i really enjoyed the art and i think it made the plot even better.

and speaking of the plot — plotwise, it’s not new or anything, and it’s actually maybe — not simplistic, but at least not as deep as it could have been? but i think that the characters were really well done, the relationships were interesting and fun (especially the friendships) and you have a very different setting to what you see in standard fantasy peasant-to-knight sort of novels. so those things make up for any lacking plot anyway.

i had to reread to remember what actually happens in the plot, which is basically that the main character aiza signs up to train to become squire, which is like a knight. problem: she is ornu. they’re part of the bayt-sajji empire but comsidered second class because racism and recently conquered etc etc. now in the army she deals with training, making friends, and figuring out what she really wants to fight for, while also trying to keep her being ornu hush-hush

because its a graphic novel it is a bit faster to read which is why i think it doesnt go into as much detail as a uhh words book on certain plot points, especially if you sort of skim read like me, but homestly its so fun,, so worth it,, i also liked the thought that went into the main side characters, they’re not , like. flat (husni is GREAT).

it’s also a Thick and Big Book so it feels nice :>

what are some of the funniest arcs in m!ik in your opinion

i think the first arc is definitely one of, if not THE funniest because of how much whiplash you get like you go from this

to this

in the space of one chapter

and then we're introduced to kalego sensei who massacres a display board

and then. uh. this happens

this is only in the first two/three chapters. and then straight away we meet fucking clara and.

the love trio will always be one of my super top favourites not only because they're so cute but also because of shit like the panels above. azz azz becomes a widow in less than one page.

finally the general irumaness

i think the first arc is very funny because we're getting used to this weird chaotic world and they're smacking us with these surprises every three seconds.

i haven't even mentioned the abnormal class or the stuff that happens in lessons

but i will also say that the tournament arc is peak comedy uh

ive run out of photo allowance :( but iruma survival mode. clara's onesie. hmm

then also the one mini arc with the love trio crossdressing and dancing on stage in public that was. glorious

which vibe stands out to you more: sputtering candlelight or flickering fluorescents

fluorescents very much gives me battinson’s gotham vibes. like standing outside in gotham while it rains and you can hear the faint buzzing of those leds on the shop youre standing in front of and the streetlights are kinda faint above you, and theres some muffled shouting from an apartment somewhere close by and the moon sometimes peeks out from behind the clouds but honestly you’re kinda focused on getting home, you just got sidetracked for a second.

flickering candlelight is more like being in a stuffy room, red curtains, everything is barely visible and all the ambient noise is kinda muffled. the windows are shut and obscured behind them red curtains and youre sitting on some gorgeous wood furniture - it’s carved and everything - and wonderfully warm, but it’s so dark in this room: the candlelight barely does anything except for casting large shadows against faint glimpses of elegant furnishings and you’re kind of sleepy so, a nap wouldn’t hurt, right?
