Even if it hurts to death

The air was thick with the weight of unsaid words as Y/n stood with her arms wrapped around herself, trying to shield herself from the cold—or maybe from the conversation she was about to have. Heeseung stood a few feet away, watching her with concern, the glow of streetlights casting shadows on his face.

“What’s going on?” he asked, his voice soft but tinged with worry. “You said we needed to talk.”

She couldn’t meet his gaze, her fingers nervously fidgeting with the hem of her jacket. Her heart pounded in her chest, the truth trapped in her throat. But she knew she couldn’t tell him. She couldn’t let him see her weakness, her illness. This had to be done.

“I...” she started, her voice breaking. She forced herself to look at him, her face hardened in a mask of indifference. “I don’t think this is working anymore.”

Heeseung blinked, confusion flashing across his face. “What are you talking about?”

She swallowed the lump in her throat, her words coming out harsher than she meant. “Us. I don’t love you anymore.”

Did I say those things without even meaning it?

His entire body seemed to freeze, disbelief flooding his eyes. “What? Where is this coming from?”

She turned away from him, tears burning at the edges of her eyes, but she forced herself to stay strong. “It’s just... I don’t feel the same way. I need space. We’ve been together too long, and I don’t want this anymore.”

He stepped forward, desperation creeping into his voice. “Don’t do this. You’re not serious.”

Her hands clenched into fists by her sides. Every word felt like a knife to her own heart. “I am serious. I’ve been feeling this way for a while. I just... I don’t love you, okay?”

Even if it hurts to death

The pain in his eyes was unmistakable, and for a moment, she almost took it all back. She wanted to tell him everything—the diagnosis, the treatments, the reason she had to let him go. But instead, she stood her ground, staring down at her feet to avoid the heartbreak on his face.

He let out a shaky breath, his voice low and strained. “I don’t believe you. You’re lying.”

the words I spit out

She bit her lip, shaking her head. “I’m not lying. It’s better this way. You deserve someone who actually cares.”

It’s alright if you leave me

The words felt poisonous, and she wished she could take them back as soon as they left her lips. His face twisted in anger, the heartbreak giving way to fury.

“Better for who?” he snapped, his voice trembling with emotion. “You think you can just throw everything away like this and act like it doesn’t matter? That I don’t matter?”

She flinched at the venom in his tone, her chest tightening. “It’s better for both of us. You’ll move on. You’ll be happier without me.”

His hands clenched at his sides, his face a mixture of pain and rage. “You’re selfish. You’re a coward. After everything, this is how you end it? Like I never meant anything to you?”

Her heart shattered at his words, but she couldn’t let him know the truth. She had to protect him from what was coming. “Just go,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “Please.”

He stared at her for a moment, his eyes searching hers for any sign of the girl he loved—the girl who once promised him everything. But all he saw was a stranger.

“Fine,” he spat, stepping back. “If this is what you want, then I’ll go. But don’t come back. I’ll hate you forever.”

His words cut through her like glass, but she stood there, frozen, as he turned and walked away, his footsteps heavy on the pavement. Each step felt like it was dragging her heart further into the ground.

She watched him disappear into the night, tears streaming down her face, her body trembling. She couldn’t stop the sob that escaped her lips, her knees buckling as the weight of what she had just done crushed her. Her heart broke into a million pieces, shattered by the lies she had told to protect him.

And now, he was gone. Forever.
