Ramblings about Femme. 2 Years on, I can see some flaws in Femme. I wished it was longer, or that we saw more of Prestons POV. We never saw any romantic scenes/ So was it just physical? etc But the reason [at the time] why I thought Femme was the best thing since sliced Bread was because Ng and Sam casted a black lead. That NEVER fricking happens in gay cinema. NEVER. Usually every LGBT film casts a sea of White Twinks and the film is White centred, But Femme had an actual Black lead. Not a mixed race, super light skinned lead. But a black dark skinned lead, that wasn't a negative black stereotype. I don't think I've ever seen that in Queer cinema before. So that's the main reason I became obsessed with the Femme film.
Jules isn't a thug, or a dealer or on the dole. He's not hyper masculine or in the closet. [ Alot of Queer films portray black gays as hyper masculine thugish types with no brains, just with BBC [ I hate that phrase but I'll use it this once] In fact the white character gets all the negative street thug tropes. But Jules was just a regular Femme guy that was living with friends and enjoying his life. Casting a dark skinned black guy as a LEAD in a LGBTQ thriller is a MASSIVE deal. So massive that I don't think the directors realise how groundbreaking it was.
So ......I'll always love Femme for that reason!

Review: Aaron Lee Tasjan- Stellar Evolution
Sometimes an eclectic album will be called “genre-defying.” Stellar Evolution, the new album from Aaron Lee Tasjan out 4/12 on Blue Elan Records, isn't genre-defying. That implies an acknowledgment that genres exist, something Tasjan refuses to do throughout this record.
Stellar Evolution pinballs from synthwave to power pop, classic rock, glam to Americana, and elsewhere, sometimes within the same song. Co-produced by Tasjan and Gregory Lattimer, who teamed up to produce Tasjan's 2021 album Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan!, it somehow always makes sense within the context of the song and the album.
The album's standout track “Alien Space Queen” is about as far from standard roots music as it gets. It's a danceable celebration of the outsider, with Tasjan noting the song's subject “ drives an old Trans-Am / in sunset gold / she's trans-femme / a demigirl dream.” Tasjan imagines a day when these joyous weirdos will rule the world and “we would live in peace.”
Another highlight of the album is “The Horror of It All.” With a less celebratory take on non-conformity, Tasjan sets this song in one of the least friendly places for the different; high school. “Whispers in the hallway growing” Tasjan laments as his rumored sexual proclivities are bandied about the classroom. But his protagonist comes out of it, screaming “I've got to be myself / because everyone else / is already taken.” This is the strongest guitar track on Stellar Evolution, reminding listeners why Tasjan was tapped as guitarist for New York Dolls before his solo career. When he rips, he truly rips. Further distancing it from being too serious is the fun music video, with its '80s horror movie VHS look and feel.
Stellar Evolution's other single, “Drugs Took Me” starts as a stoner fable (“dirty feet / long greasy hair / Jesus Christ goes heroin chic”) with Tasjan reciting the lines in his best burnout voice turns darker in the song's second half as he sees himself in the mirror (“white as an Irish spirit/everyone's best invisible friend”). It's somewhat autobiographical, telling Tasjan's journey to sobriety.
Tasjan goes full Tom Petty mode on “I Love America Better Than You.” It's a shot at nationalists who see patriotism as a contest, and exclusive to people who look or think like they do. “Happy Independence,” Tasjan drawls. “I hope you weren't depending / on we're all created equal / to go and live some dream.”
For those looking for ballads, Stellar Evolution has its share. “Dylan Shades” is an introvert's love story. “Roll Your Windows Down” is just about the pure joy of hanging out with people who accept who you are. “Young” is a piano ballad that is beautiful in its simplicity.
Stellar Evolution feels like just that for Aaron Lee Tasjan; an evolution. The courage to let the songs dictate the genre or, as is often the case here, to skip genrefication altogether, comes with experience. Stellar Evolution is the portrait of an artist who comes into his own.

It’s been 16 days, 12 hours and 29 minutes since you’ve been in the loving arms of your fiancé.
No, you aren’t in a lover’s quarrel. In fact, you were at an all-time high, having been newly engaged just 18 days, 8 hours and 17 minutes prior.
But dating the unit chief of the Behaviour Analysis Unit meant that the job doesn’t come lightly. If there’s a case, no matter the time, no matter the location, the team would be on the jet within the hour.
Aaron Hotchner had been upfront with this even before officially starting your relationship, having learned that it was almost always the cause of his failed lovelife.

Seeing Jack’s slightly wavy 6-year old penmanship with yours felt right. It’s these signs of a home to return to that recharges Aaron in rough cases.
But you’re only human. And it just so happens to be one of those days that an empty bed feels like an endless downfall.
The spark in your eyes dimmer and every bone in your body craving his touch.

It’s currently 7:43pm and you’re still in the middle of getting ready for the girls night. Officially, the goal of tonight was to reduce stress and let out an end-of-the-work-week frustrations. But you can see past the unusually early and long agenda for the night - the real goal was to get you to forget the past two weeks of “miss yous”.
The reflection looking back at you is a lady dressed to the nines - your dress was flawless, your shoes while slightly heeled, had a secret (as Aaaron likes to call them) foam cushion insoles - perfect to whatever the girls have planned and without the worry of blisters.
On the outside, you’re ready to go but the mood isn’t right. This felt like plastering wallpaper on the cracks.

Wearing Aaron’s shirt while he’s away on a case became a regular thing near your one-year anniversary. The team had gotten a case up in a fishing village in Alaska and was informed that there would be little mobile.
Since he won’t be able to update you as often as he likes, Aaron devised this deal.
“Here.” He had said, placing one of his home shirts on your lap. “It’s for when you miss me, wear it and it would be like I’m right there with you.”
“Aww, I didn’t know you could be this cheesy.” You say, smirking at him. “I love this side of you.”
Aaron helps you get your head through. “Miss me already?”
“Always” Pecking his dimple. “And this-” You continue, grabbing his phone from his back pocket. “Is something for you.”
That right there frozen in time, a moment of full domesticity, a scene filled with love - Just you and him, wrapped in each other’s arms. Aaron Hotchner, a man people rarely see smile - now has a lockscreen of lovestruck eyes and an infectious smile with you in his clothes reflecting the exact same expression.

Your eyes were still adjusting to the dark room, but you would know that voice from anywhere. “Aaron? I'm dreaming?”
“No, y/n. I’m really here, I’m home.” He whispers, pulling you close to kiss your forehead. Aaron missed your touch, your voice - he would want to hear about your days but seeing that it was 4am, he is fine settling for second best which is being wrapped around in your arms.
As he snuggles to your chest, the pattern of what you're wearing catches his eye. “So, my old academy shirt huh?”
“Shut up, it’s cause I missed you.”

Quick thoughts on the Indie Spirit Awards to explain my yay! but also: huh? reaction:
Generally, a very chaotic set of nominations. very little overlap in the Big 3 categories (feature, director, screenplay)
I don't know what I'm more surprised by. That Sebastian made it in for TA instead of ADM or that he made it in and yet Jeremy Strong didn't? I 'd have thought that if (that's a really big IF because, you know, *gestures at everything* recent events) one of them was gonna make it in at all, my money would've been on Jeremy.
Similarly very surprised by the Ali Abbasi nomination.

I continue to be absolutely delighted for Aaaron Schimberg and the love for ADM. Also, props to them for nominating him in what I think is not only the most deserving but also the most promising category for this film: screenplay! Maybe now A24 will finally get off their asses after all and throw some might (and money!) behind ADM. Because--and I could be terribly wrong about this, we'll see as soon as next week when Critics' Choice, LA Film Critics and the sure to be messy AF Golden Globes nominations drop--it seems like the love for Queer just isn't there? I still don't know how Luca Guadagnino got them to pay $50 million for this. Controversial opinion maybe, but I simply don't think that Daniel Craig is actually a big enough star to make people want to go see him have gay sex and go on ayahuasca trips in the Ecuadorian jungle in a 1950s period piece. Like *I* certainly want to see that, but I don't buy tickets worth $50 million. Good for Luca, I guess, but what a headscratcher of a late acquisition when A24 already had The Brutalist, I Watched the TV Glow, A Different Man, AND Sing Sing (which is very good and Colman Domingo is wonderful in it) lined up for this year.
I really want to see A Real Pain, but it's not out here until January. Ugh.
