We localized the names of all the Super Mario Land enemies, too!

Yeah! If you don't remember, a few years ago, we came up with localized names for all the Super Mario Land 2 enemies as a sort of Christmas gift from us to you! But did you know? There's a Super Mario Land 1 also, and very few of its enemies have localized names either...! With another holiday upon us, we're making this the gift that keeps on giving, with a whole new set of clever enemy names just for you! I hope you enjoy!

Goombo -> Goombie the Shroom Fish

While "Goombo" has always been a fine name, it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi that other localized Goomba relatives like "Galoomba," "Goombrat," and "Goombud" have. With this new name, which is a clever homage to Hootie & the Blowfish, now it should fit right in!

Bombshell Koopa -> Koopie the Boom Fish

Another enemy that technically has a localized name already, but once again, this fairly boring name lacks the ceci n'est pas une pipe that truly great localized names have. It might seem weird to call a turtle a fish, but when you think about it, all tetrapods are fish, so it's fine!

Bullet Biff -> Shootie the Bullet Fish

You know the drill by now! A name that lacks Allouette, je te plumerai turned much more memorable by one simple yet effective reference! Bullets look kind of like fish, you know!

Since we've spruced up all the enemies with actual localized names, now it's time to Get Creative! The rest will be under the cut!

Fly -> Fruity the Fly Fish

While not explicitly a fruit fly, we figured that for the sake of the homage, this name gets the job done. And don't worry, I checked. He's allowed to reclaim it.

Bunbun -> Stabyoutie the Bee Fish

The Japanese name is an onomatopoeia for the sound a bee makes, but because we couldn't think of an English equivalent, we decided to name it after what it does instead. Watch out! It's gonna stab you!

Gao -> Mewtie the Lion Fish

"Mew" is a common onomatopoeia for a cat, which fits Gao pretty nicely, given a lion is a type of Big Cat! Of course, to remind people this is a lion rather than your typical housecat, we've appended it with "the Lion Fish" for good measure.

King Totomesu -> Roary the Zebra Turkeyfish

I'm pretty sure one of my siblings once had a plush lion named "Roary the Lion" so I've decided to rename King Totomesu in their honor. And see what we did with the descriptor, eh? Eh? Pretty clever, huh?

Honen -> Hootie the Bone Fish again

Yeah, I know we used "Hootie the Bone Fish" for Honebon during our Super Mario Land 2 project, but can you blame us for the repeat? It's a good name! And since none of these names are official, either one can have it. I don't mind.

Yurarin Boo -> Hottie the Blow Fish

Yurarin Boo is a seahorse that blows fire at you, and you may not know this, but fire is Hot! I know it's a seahorse and not a pufferfish, but since it's a fish that blows fire, I figured "Blow Fish" would be a good pun still.

Mekabon -> Rebootie the Bot Fish

As an enemy in the Muda Kingdom (the game's signature water world!) with a fish-eyed stare and arms that look more like flippers than anything else, this enemy's fishy appearance was not lost on us, and we figured we should reflect that in its name.

Torion -> The Blue Fish

I know I said some of the already localized names lacked omelette du fromage or whatever, but some enemies really do just deserve a name that's simple, straight, and to the point. Torion is one such enemy.

Yurarin -> Nottie the No Fish

As a relative of Hottie the Blow Fish without the ability to blow fire, we decided to give it a similar name, but this time specify it can't really do anything special at all. Serves as a nice parallel to the Yurarin/Yurarin Boo naming convention, huh?

Gunion -> Octootie the Blue-Ringed Fish

"Oh, those rings are clearly yellow!" I hear you say, but consider: Super Mario Land was in black and white. Or. Dark green and lighter green. Maybe the official art made a coloring mistake, huh? Huh??? Some people would object to me calling it a Fish also, but at this point it's been well-established that every sea creature is some kind of fish.

Tamao -> Tammy the Jelly Fish

See what I mean? The English instruction manual called this thing a jellyfish, and I'm sticking by it!

Dragonzamasu -> Haughty the Boss Fish

As the boss version of Hottie the Blow Fish, I figured to give it a name that parallel's Hottie's as well! As a boss, you'd expect it to be pretty haughty, huh?

Bataon -> idk man give me a break the Flying Fish

this is really hard you guys

Ganchan -> Cheeky the Stone Fish

What a Cheeky fellow we have here! I think it's fun they decided to give this rolling rock a personality with eyes and cheeks, and we've decided to emphasize that with the name we came up with for it!

Tokotoko -> Scooty the Dude Fish

Tokotoko looks like it's running very fast, but it doesn't even have legs, so it kinda just. Scoots all over the place. And I'd be foolish not to call this guy a Dude, what with the Cool Cool Glasses! And since Batadon is a Fish, Scooty shall be too. Simple as that!

Suu -> Suutie the Arachno-Fish

Decided to stay pretty faithful to the Japanese name with this one, but I figured a clever reference to Hootie & the Blowfish would make it more relatable to the American youth of today.

Kumo -> Kumootie the Arachno-Fish

Hiyoihoi -> Brutie the Rude Fish

Hiyoihoi has always had sort of "cool delinquent" vibes to me, hence calling him rude, and as a boss, you gotta assume he's a bit of a brute. The name also rhymes with "Scooty the Dude Fish," which this is the boss version of!

Pionpi -> Spooky the Boo Fish

This frightening fishy fiend is sure to give you the heebie-jeebies!

Pompon Flower -> Rootie the Grow Fish

Plants are pretty well known for having roots and growing, and thanks to Hootie the Blue Fish helping us learn that plants can, indeed, be considered fish, that makes every part of this name legally Clever!

Nyololin -> Spewtie the Blow Fish

Look, I know this is the second enemy that we've named "the Blow Fish," but it blows poison at you, and on that note, it is poison like a real blowfish! It all comes together flawlessly!

Chicken -> Tweetie the Crow Fish

Yeah, I know we technically changing its species, but it looks nothing like a chicken! Can you blame us? And the Mario franchise has a long-running tradition of connecting birds and fish (see Cheep Cheep!) so calling it not just a "crow," but a "crow fish" makes it fit in better.

Roketon -> Grutie the Banana Fish

Chikako -> Floatie the Glow Fish

Hi the Mod formerly known as Mod Chikako! I hope you like your new legal name going forwards...!

Pipe Fist -> Punchyoutie the Pipe Fist

This one may seem like we're grasping at straws, but being a big hand, I think Punchyoutie the Pipe Fist can grasp straws very easily, thank you very much.

Biokinton -> Cumulootie the Atmosphish

This one's self-explanatory.

Chapter 1 -> Chapter 2 -> Chapter 3

Ships: Y/N x the outliers

CW: poor family relationships / poor mental health

You spent the next few hours slowly coming to. And getting to know your new temporary roommates. You told them the basics about yourself, and some funny stories and fun facts. Tearing up when you thought about your old life to much. And they returned the favor.

You learned that dust doesn’t talk. Because he can’t. something about losing his vocal cords. You learned that error’s body is the way that it is because of code radiation that used to infest the antivoid. He Told you it’s fine now because of something related to a “heart” but he wouldn’t tell you any specifics.

You learned horror loves to bake! That Got you pretty excited to try some of his work. Apparently their team name is “the outliers” and there’s a bunch of other teams in the Multiverse. Some good, most bad. It’s their job as protectors too well, protect. And try to stop whatever evil gangs they come across.

you learned they’re all in a band! “Mew mew and the outliers.” Apparently the band name came first. error is the lead singer, but doesn’t like going on stage so he has to wear a mask and perform as a character. you ask him if that’s considered drag since the character is a girl, and killer immediately replies with an enthusiastic yes. Telling you he also does drag.

You learned that nova has a brother, but he doesn’t like talking about him. Saying he “lost him a long time ago” and “The person his is now is someone I don’t know.” You related to Nova quite a bit. Your relationship with family wasn’t exactly the greatest back home. You ask him if he wants to get to know the person his brother is now. He says absolutely, but his brother runs one of the most dangerous gangs in the Multiverse. So it’s complicated.

It was getting pretty late at this point. Apparently. you don’t really have a good sense of time. You all had been talking for quite a while. Horror had excused himself, dust following behind. You remember telling him about one of your favorite foods in your earlier conversation. And when he returned with dust, he had that exact thing on a plate for you.

“I figured… it could make ya…. Feel better.” The large skeleton said with a smile, handing you your food. Nova assisted you in sitting up, careful not to agitate your wounds. Once you were upright, you began to dig in. As you took the first bite, could be tears in your eyes. Your favorite food was always something you’d eat when things were going wrong. A piece of comfort that you could always rely on. You weren’t sure if it was because of just how bad the situation was, or because of horror’s cooking… but in that moment, your favorite food had never tasted better.

Horror and the others looked knowingly at you as you started to cry. Like they had all been in your position before. Horror slowly approached you, putting his hand on your shoulders. “Hey… it’s ok to cry… you’ll be ok… we promise.” The sympathy in his eyes caused you to crack even more. You sniffled as you stared at him. “Do you… need a hug?” He said, tilting his head and opening his arms. After a moment of pause, you set your food aside and slowly nod.

He takes you into his arms, careful not to hurt you. His warmth and the plush of his jacket snap the final straw. You hug back, crying into his shoulder. He squeezes you tighter just slightly. The extra pressure is extremely welcome. He lets you cry for quite a while, before you part. You manage to thank him through shaky breath. He Delicately wipes the tears from your eyes with his thumb. “anytime… we’re here… for you.” He says

Your face warms were he touched you as you go back to eating. dust brings up the idea of watching a movie. They all agreed to let you pick because your the “guest of honor” so to speak. You haven’t heard a single movie out of their selection. Probably because they all come from alternate universes. You pick out one about trucks getting possessed by aliens or something, and error perks up immediately. Saying “oh my god this one is SO BAD it’s AMAZING.” And ranting about the apparent cinematic disaster you’re about to view.

You start the movie and- wait is this a horror movie? Wait… oh. Oh my god. It’s bad. It’s really that bad. So bad in fact, it turns right around to being so damn funny. You all agreed that you should be able to talk during this movie because joking around is part of the fun. But no one was really able to because you were all laughing your asses off. Apparently only Dust and error had seen this movie before so everyone else is losing their mind right along with you.

After a long night of joking around and laughing hysterically about evil alien semi trucks, error stands up and says it’s probably time to start heading to bed. You ask if you’ll be sleeping on the couch. “Oh no dear—” Nova explained “we have a guest room just for you.”

“allow me.” He said, and began to assist you up on to your feet. You try to take a step, but the pain in your stomach stops you. You nearly fall over, but nova is there to catch you. “do you not think you can walk?” He asked. You don’t think you can, and you tell him as much. He hums to himself for a moment, before seemingly getting an idea. “Here, may I?” He asks, holding you up. you nod your head. Not actually sure what he was applying.

In one swift motion, nova sweeps you up into his arms. You yelp at the sudden movement, causing nova to glance down to you. “Are you alright?” He questions. You slowly nod as blush fills your cheeks. “Good. Let’s get you some rest.” He replies

“Error, could you open the tent for us?” Nova called. Walking away with you. “Of Corse!” Error replied. Pulling strings from his eyes that caused the knitted walls to part. The blinding white of the outside caused you to squint your eyes tight as you hissed through your teeth.

Nova was squinting as well, blinking over and over to try and get his eyes to adjust faster. After you a moment, he begins walking off into the white void. You ask where you’re going. “Our guest bedroom of course.” He replies. The two of you soon come across a blue door. You had seen a couple other doors connected to nothing in the void thus far. Nova reached out with one of his tentacles to open it.

Turning and handel and going inside, the room was simple. Just a bed and adjacent desk and dresser. there was nothing on the walls except for window with the curtains drawn. Nova walks slowly over to bed and gingerly places you down. Careful not to agitate you. After setting you on the bed, nova kneels by your side.

“Now my friend, you suffer from nightmares… is that right?” Bad ones. Ever since that day, you never been able to get a good nights rest. You explain your situation to nova. He looks at you with sympathy in his eyes and warmth in his smile “then I will assist you, if you so desire.” You do. “Oh, one thing however…”

“My connection to your mind will be stronger if I am closer to you. I would have asked you before, but I could not, it was quite a dire situation. So if I may, how comfortable are you with touch?”

You ask him if you can sit on his lap like you were when you first woke up. “Oh! Are your nightmares that intense?”

You say yes… but you also just want to be with him again. It felt so… right. Being in his arms. “Alright then. I’ll go tell the others I’ll be staying with you.” Nova stood from his place beside you and felt the room. You… hadn’t been without them all since you woke up. You felt so alone.

The weight of your situation began to sink in again. You tried to sit up, but only hurt your stomach more. Tears pricked at your eyes… you tried to keep yourself from thinking about your old home. Your old friends. But you just— can’t stop. Until…

The door handle twists as nova returns. And… everyone else too? “*Sigh* my apologies…” nova began “I told the others I would be here with you tonight, and they insisted a slumber party was in order.”

Error piped up from behind his tall pink friend “if you’ll have us! Of course…” you welcome them all with open if somewhat confused arms. Why would they all want to stay with you…? You’ve just met— did they all really find you that interesting? Although there’s a part of you that’s warmed by the thought of them wanting to be with you… None the less you tell them you’d love a slumber party.

Error sighs in relief, killer pumps their fist in the air, horror claps excitedly, and dust simply walks in and sets down a massive armload of pillows. While everyone else was getting comfortable, error slunk over to you. “H-hey… sorry if we’re coming on too strong— we all just think you’re really cool after hanging out… we don’t have to sleep here really— just tell us if it’s to much ok?”

You pause for moment, taking in the fact that they all apparently think you’re so cool after one hang out that a slumber party was in order, before calming error’s worries. You told him truthfully that you liked them all too. And getting more opportunities to be with them was fantastic. A weight seemed to lift from error’s shoulders. “Woo, ok— awesome! Just tell us if you need anything alright?” You nod and smile warmly at him.

After helping everyone settle, nova approaches you again. “Pardon me, but Are you sure you would like us to be that close again? A connection that strong would not be required to sooth your mind. I’m simply concerned you are forcing your because you think it necessary.”

You question yourself for a moment, you’ve only just met him… but then… you remember the way he looked at you. The deftness in which he held you. The warm hum of his magic as you lie on his chest. You reassure nova that you don’t mind. You want to make sure the your connection is extra strong so you can actually rest. You also just want to be close to him again… but you don’t tell him that part.

He looks at you with that god damned smile of his… gods you can’t get enough of it. The way he looks at you just wrapping around your soul like a warm embrace. “Of course… “ he says “allow me.”

The dryad bends down and gently moves you over so he can lay down beside you. You feel his tendrils wrapping around you as he gently lifts you up above the mattress. After scooting to the middle of the bed, he gingerly places you on top of him. Your head resting on his chest again.

You melt into his hold as he takes one of your hands in his own. Your body relaxing as he takes his other hand and gently places it on your stomach. Using his healing magic to sooth your pain. “Rest now my dear friend. We are here to protect you. You are safe now.”

His silken words echo in your mind as the chatter of the others around fills the room with warmth. The hum of nova’s powerful soul finally lulls you into the one thing you thought you’d never experience again… calming, restful… sleep.

(Extra note: the movie they watched is Stephen King’s maximum overdrive. It’s an absolute shit show would highly recommend with friends)

What inspired you to get into pokmon?

I've loved Pokemon since I was little! We had movies 1-5 and the lucario movie on dvd when I was little and I watched them on repeat all the time. I collected cards, figures, and plushes-

I love Pokemon! Fun fact, Mew isn't actually my favorite Pokemon. Not even my favorite mythical. My favorite overall is Buizel and my favorite Mythical is Celebi.

LUNCHTIME [Tracking Down]

The family of three are driving down the busy 8am streets.

Mary had already been dropped off to her respective kindergarten, and while Samuel typically would have been dropped off right alongside his sister, his classroom teachers were both on sick leave, resulting in Sylvester bringing him along to work.

It's just the office part of the building, nothing bad will happen, he reasoned to himself as he pulled into the gated entryway. A flash of his car pass let him trough easily enough.

Once parked and out the car, he picked up his son in his arms, locked the vehicle and headed inside. He'll deal with the possible back pain later, but now he just needed to make sure Sam didn't run off somewhere. It's a big place and he's not in the mood to play tag with a 5 year old.

He greeted the receptionist with a quick nod and made his way to the elevator, within which he finally put the boy down, but made sure to keep holding his hand.

The door slides open on the second floor, his little office just down the hallway.

Were he to look behind him, he'd see a pair of men gaze their way, with one getting playfully elbowed in the side by shorter one as they quietly conversed.

Though Sam did. He stared at the men in uniforms with big, curious eyes, and innocently waved their way.

Seemingly delighted, the one who did the elbowing waved back with the same enthusiasm. The other remained put in place, staring at him unblinkingly. Uncannily.

Turning back to his father, he almost walks headfirst into his legs. Sylvester unlocked the office door, and ushered the boy in, entering without even a cursory glance towards the two men.

"Well, here we are, kid," Sylvester hums, turning on the lights and then helping Sam unzip his coat and hanging it up next to his own one on the rack.

As a cautionary measure though, he locked the door, pocketing the keys. Again, mainly to stop a certain child from sneaking out, but also to keep unwanted visitors away.

"You got your toys, bud?"

Sammy nodded, and pulled out his beloved plush fox, as well as a handful of cars and an assortment of other random toys.

"I do have one rule, don't touch what's on my table, okay? Everything else is okay, just… Just not that. Got that, Sam?"

The boy nods as he wanders around, fascinated by the trinkets and items surrounding him.

Samuel finds himself settling on the windowsill, loving the rising sun. If his father were to look at him now, he'd just see a ball of ginger fur, snoozing away.

As he napped, Sylvester turned to his own duties. Various broken or worn down laptops, radios and the like were left in his care. Most were easy jobs though, like the vents of a poor laptop being clogged with dust or a few missing screws here and there for a device which should have been retired years ago.

Speaking of radios, he turned on his favorite station for some background noise. His longtime friend, Ainārs, was on air, speaking with that distinctly thick Russian accent of his. Nothing that important was said. Traffic, upcoming weather and the like. Just a pleasant white noise to have on so he didn't have to listen to obnoxiously loud shouting coming from his colleagues.

Lunchtime rolled around. They were both starting to grow hungry, as evident by the way Sam was tugging at Sylvester's pants.

"Alright, alright. I guess we can take a break now," he smiled, ruffling the boy's curly hair, resulting in a happy mew.

"Whatcha want, hm?"

"Uh, I dunno…" the boy trails off, looking unsure of himself.

"Then I guess I'll have to choose. You okay with a bistro? Or do you want some junk fo-"

"Yes!" Sammy interrupts, eyes basically lighting up with stars at the rare treat. And it gave him something to brag to his sister about, since Sylvester wasn't typically fond of the greasier stuff.

The father smiles, and once they're both dressed, he pockets his wallet and they step out the office. At least Sylvester did. Sam basically ran, to the amusement of Syl.

In his excitement though, the boy runs straight into something. Or rather someone.

"Ack-!" he yelps, drawing the attention of his dad, who was locking the door.

Only to be faced with his soulmate, who was gripping his son in an attempt to steady him… Only to severely underestimate his own strength and draw a pained whimper from the boy.

… At least he didn't fall over.

Still, Sylvester went to pick his son up immediately, not liking the idea of this stranger possibly hurting him more.

"Hello to you too," his soulmate huffed as Sylvester marched down past him.

Right… it's Monday. Whatever, he's too hungry to deal with this, so with the best, most innocent and sweet tone he could muster, he replied, pointedly not looking his way.

"Hello~! Apologies, we're, uh, busy! Later!" he smiled, yet his body language indicated anything but joy.

The icing on the cake was Sammy sticking his tongue out at him, having decided in that moment that he doesn't like his father's soulmate. Not one bit.

Unfortunately, during the following days, the man was insistent on lingering around Sylvester, despite his best efforts in avoiding him.

What confused him further was the way he was almost aggressive at times, when Sylvester was just trying to do his job. Why the fuck would he be even interested in snooping trough the medical files stored away in the big old-fashioned box called his work computer?

Whatever. If he's hellbent on sending mixed signals, Sylvester is hellbent on ignoring each and every one of them. They're adults and they can talk like ones too, as far as he cared.

Nobody is forced to get together with their soulmates. It's not a legal obligation. He would know, as evidenced by the two children he now has in his care. Both from non-soulmate relationships.

In the depths of his mind, he hoped it would ward him off. Maybe make him think Sylvester is taken, despite there being no ring on his finger. Or even better, maybe make the soulmate think he's the unfaithful partner.

The soulmate who's name he doesn't even know. The call sign, sure, but not his name. Damn military folk, being cagey with their true selves. But he supposed he understands it to a degree. That's good enough.

Sighing, he slumped over his workbench, trying to focus just on the radio and not his thoughts.

Thoughts which he's drawn out from at the two sharp knocks on the door.

He debates playing dead. Maybe ignoring the mystery person.

Two more knocks. Louder now.

Can't they fuck off? he thinks to himself.

And again.

"Ugh, coming!" he caves, and unlocks the door, ripping it open, "Can't you read? I'm on break," he grumbles, pointing to the sticky note he put on the outside of the frosted glass door.

"Apologies, Mr J-"

"Don't call me that. It's Sylvester. Just… call me Sylvester. What do you want?" he asks after cutting him off. Last thing he wants is pretending he's in the mood to upkeep the formal persona expected of him.

"Right… Have you eaten yet?" Stone asks.

What kinda question-

"No…?"

"Hm.. Here, then," he speaks, shoving a little box in Sylvester's hands. It's warm, Syl notices.

"Huh? Wait, hey! Get back here!" he calls out, but once more, the taller man is quicker and disappears around the corner moments after giving him the little reusable plastic container.

Luckily for him, Sylvester doesn't follow. Or else he'd see how flustered the soulmate lets himself become.

Though, unfortunately for Stone, his friend catches him there instead.

Pokemon Regionals Vancouver BC - My Experience

After having a good time at the Portland Regionals in 2023, I decided to make it a yearly thing - choose a Regionals to go to and see what there is to do!

I fully intended this year to have a video game team all ready to go with side games, however, I started a full playthrough of Violet for the DLC and did not finish Blueberry Academy's story, let alone with enough time to build and test a team. Let alone trade for Pokemon like Giraffe Raikou because I got Violet. So I did not have a real team. Which was fine because I only had a spectator pass.

My Video Game skill level: Battle Tower 50-streaks earned in Gens 3, 4, 6, and 7 for the Ribbons. No competitive experience against real people.

My Trading Card Game skill level: I know the rules but mostly played Theme on TCG Online. Not caught up on the meta at all.

My GO skill level: I don't play GO League. Level 39 in general with random Pokemon I like raised up with little regard for what's good.

My friend does not play TCG or VG, is higher level than me in GO.

Day 0 (Friday)

The venue opened for merch sales and, surprisingly, side events. I arrived in the afternoon and got side event tickets and picked up the GO sheets, since those are very much aimed at a casual audience. It was like a mini GO fest. My friend and I went out around the city to scope the area out for food places and do as many of the GO tasks as we could outside the venue. I also took note that they were testing some formats, which was free to participate in. I made note of when it was happening on Saturday.

That was really all we did first day of arrival.

Day 1 (Saturday)

We arrived early to get in on the testing. I expressed interest in the Video Game format and received a Fighting TCG energy card that told me to come back in an hour.

With that, my friend and I went around the venue doing the Pokemon GO scavenger hunt tasks that required taking photos of various banners in the venue, as well as top off the Raids, trading, and making friends tasks. Most of the making friends tasks were easy to do after raiding due to the built-in friending-after-Raid feature. I got a little concerned I would have to redo some of the tasks since one of the GO players we spoke to said they were instructed to take screenshots of all their tasks as they did them, while we were only told that they'd go through our in-game journal to check. But some of the tasks didn't show up in the journal. It seemed like it was going to be a big mess.

Hour up, I headed back to the format testing area. Sadly, I was the only sign-up for that hour, so I exchanged my energy card for the next hour's, a Psychic Energy.

My friend and I wrapped up our GO tasks after this and headed to the GO prize booth. Luckily for us, the people there just believed us that we had done our tasks and let us turn in our tickets for prizes without checking that we did them right. I got a Mew plush and my friend got a Latios plush!

Hour up, I headed back to the format testing area. Sadly, I was still the only sign-up for the hour, and I exchanged my energy card for the next hour's: a Darkness Energy.

So more GO playing around the venue it was! But my feet were tired so we headed over to where various console systems were set up. N64s, Gamecubes, and Switches all had various games running. There was an empty spot playing Colosseum where evidently someone got stuck not knowing where to go next. The game was at the beginning, post getting Rui (named AAAAAAA here), but before finding any Shadow Pokemon. I played, getting Makuhita and Croconaw before deciding I should give up the spot to someone else.

Hour up, I headed back to the format testing area. This time there were a couple of additional players! Seemed to be brother/sister around highschooler age. But honestly age doesn't matter much when I'm on the lower end of the skill level here.

VG Test Format

The format was interesting: each player gets a pack of cards to open. Each keeps the code card and puts that in their Draft. From there, they draft one card from their pack and pass it around. Each Pokemon is a Pokemon you can use on your video game team. Each Trainer, Code or Energy card is an item you can attach (any item). Pokemon can only be raised one stage above what's on the card: an actual example was that I got a Nacli card and could only use either Nacli or Naclstack - I could not use Garganacl.

Once all players get their 12 cards, they have 45 minutes to build their teams through whatever means they have. This includes HOME, trading, already having it, whatever, though the set chosen only had Pokemon available in mainland Paldea in it so you could build a team just fine with just a completed game, minus if you got the wrong Starter. I purposely did not choose any of the Starters for my team because the game I was playing was not completed.

Only one of my team was something I already had (and was an in-game team member so its EVs and IVs were whatever) so 2/3 of the time was spent catching the team and 1/3 training it. And by "training" I mean throwing vitamins at them and adjusting their movesets.

Then we did the battle phase. The judge had three cards and the two players who drew Fighting Energy fought, best of 1. I was one of them. First round I won, second round I lost.

I quite enjoyed this format. It does depend a lot on how much your game is already set up and is pretty unbalanced, but the luck of the draw really helps.

For testing and sending quick feedback (age range, skill level, did you like it?, would you recommend it?) I was given a pack of cards alongside being allowed to keep the cards I already had!

My friend and I got lunch after that, and right after lunch was the Primal Groudon Raid Event in GO, so we did all those raids. When there is such a density of high-level players in one area, they go by very quick. I got enough Primal Energy to Primal Revert Groudon! Didn't get any Shinies, though.

Impressed by the VG testing (and drawn by the fact that the TCG only needed 2 players), my friend and I did the TCG format testing next.

TCG Test Format

This format was also a draft format, but not random. They had 80 unique Pokemon and item cards stacked up, and both players take turns drawing 5 from the top, choosing one and swapping, and choosing 2 and giving the others to the other player, repeat until both players have 40 cards. From there, they use their cards and Energy cards available from the side to build a 40-card deck, swapping out anything you don't want to use for Energy.

The cards were all lower power than you'd normally build decks around - no Pokemon ex or Pokemon V. Which is just my format since I liked playing Theme!

I won 2-0 but there was a big skill gap so it's not surprising. We really should have exchanged decks for round 2 just to even the playing field a little, since I think I both built my deck better and played better.

After this, I went over to more seriously check out what the side events were and bought three side event tickets. I was most interested in Ogre Oustin' and Pokemon Pinball, but for today I decided to only do a VGC Judge Battle. If you wanted Prize tickets, this seemed like it was the way to go - the judges wanted you to have fun and this first judge went way easy on me, always attacking my higher-defense Pokemon with weaker attacks so I could win.

With a full and fun day behind us, we headed back to the hotel.

Day 2 (Sunday)

We only had two nights at the hotel and had the trip back home scheduled, so I was a little in a rush this morning. We had to be going at noon.

I immediately headed over to the side event booth to sign up for Ogre Oustin'. 1 hour of standing around later, I swapped to a Judge Battle. This guy was very nice and friendly, and wasn't really all that skilled in Video Game battles. I enjoyed battling with him, and like the day before, I won. My friend and I both wanted Prize Dice as a souvenir, so I gave her this one.

On the mention that it went faster the day before, I used my other token on Pokemon Pinball. 2 hours later, it still didn't go and I had to switch to a Judge Battle again. But even that didn't go in time as a bunch of drop-outs from the competition were in the queue, so I just asked a judge if I could get a TCG pack (the consolation prize for not winning) and take myself out of rotation and he let me. He was going to give me a prize die but I wanted a pack since I had my souvenir and wasn't going to turn them in.

Conclusion

Overall I had fun, but I do think the side events could be handled better. I really would have liked to express interest in several of the more casual side games and go with whatever one ran first, but it seemed that the only ones that were running were those that already came in with a full group, or Judge Battles.

The GO booth was fine, though it was strange that there were four task group tickets and the prizes (which were completely separate from the other game prize booth) went up to 12 for some of the plush and I think there was a Pokemon GO Plus+ there for even more than that.

But for the rest, it was a lot of standing in one spot. Last year, they gave you one of those blinking light devices and you could head around the venue as you pleased. It was frustrating that I was for one thing on a time limit, and for another just. . . no one else was signing up and I couldn't be in more than one event queue at a time.

Judge Battles are a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it is very nice to have a type of competition that WILL run, because it's customer vs. staff and the staff WILL get to you. On the other hand, it is drawing away from the PVP formats, especially because PVP you have a 1/4 chance to get the prize die (if you're all of equal skill, which won't always be the case) and in a Judge Battle you are more than 50% likely to get the prize die. Maybe close to 100%.

Last year, you got a prize die for participating and another for winning. This year, you get a prize die for winning and a TCG pack if you don't win. It's a lot more pressure to win if you want plush.

Last year I bought 5 side event tokens and got two plush and a TCG pack. I also got to play the games I wanted to at least once. This year, I bought 7 side event tokens and got one plush, one TCG pack, and two prize dice, and only got to play one of the three formats I wanted to. I did end up with four TCG packs overall, but three of those were from the format testing event, which was free.

I wish they had some computerized queue for the side events rather than it all being on paper. It'd be really nice to go: hey, I'm interested in X, Y, and Z and I'll play whatever happens first. Maybe even sign up for absolutely everything! While I'm playing, I'm off the lists so others aren't waiting for me, and then I can spend another token to get back on the other lists.

Or even if, instead of Judge Battles being its own thing, have the judges fill the slots in the other formats. That way they'd actually run even if there isn't much interest.

All that being said, I plan to come back next year at whichever Regional is closest and this time actually get three nights, planning on leaving Monday, so I'm not in a rush the last day. I may even compete - I don't know! Or I might do what I intended to do this year: get a decent team and play VGC battles in the side events area.
