erwin & levi
sometime after levi agreed to follow erwin after the events of acwnr is when he started realizing how little sense erwin makes. his involvement in the scouts' leadership at the time did not technically match his rank. most were still waiting for levi to fail, & so levi's performance reflected directly onto erwin's own credibility. levi felt that there was some twisted irony in his having some influence over erwin's career (albeit small), so there was a very personal & delightful thrill of insubordination in those early days.
erwin stops staying long at memorial bonfires after he is promoted to commander. he stays for the rituals, stays for the formalities, & then gives the rest of the time to the corps for mourning. levi used to prefer to spend the bonfires up high looking at it from above, & sometimes he still does. other times, he leaves with erwin after the formalities so long as they stay outside. fresh air feels like a better tribute than an immediate return to work. -- they are both symbols of authority rather than associated with the laymen. but even so, erwin always has the impression that levi trusts parts of erwin a little less when he does not dedicate the time to memorial (even while keeping a distance from the bonfires).
erwin survives ! au - similar to armin in canon, after the rumbling, erwin feels very reluctant to stay in one place. it always been a secret of his, that he would delight too much in the opportunity to be lazy, though his temperament would never allow it. however, armin's reluctance to settle stems from a type of flightiness that means he wants to see everything. it is also a type of sentencing from his role in the rumbling - the promise he made when he told eren he would accept half of the blame. erwin's reluctance is penance. his ambitious was never meant to survive the end of the world. this is a point of contention ( & loss ) between erwin & levi.
modern ! erwin 100% is the type to call levi on the phone if they're in different rooms of the same house if he's working. he's not much of a yeller - in canon verse, he projects & yells for war, but he doesn't actively yell so much on his own. levi is closer to blocking erwin on the phone every day that they know one another.
modern ! erwin is a decent gift giver -- or at least a frequent gift giver. items of food, a fucking garmin watch, new shoes. levi genuinely doesn't know what to do with the shit sometimes. not because the gifts can't go to use, but it just takes him off guard in ways that pisses him off.
armin & eren
in childhood, at least, eren has gotten far too many preaching sessions from armin about moral integrity. funnily, it rarely came as reprimand for things that eren did on his own. more often, it came every time that eren scolded armin. rarely did armin actively choose to act in his own self-defense, & sometimes that left him with bruises from childish scuffles or from decisions made with warped priorities. armin usually justifies himself by saying that he believes in doing the right thing. have you ever heard of it, eren ??? sorry that was dramatic.
armin doesn't know if eren knows all the ways that armin has been angry too. they express it differently.
armin is prone to excessively bad seasonal allergies, & honestly it pisses him the fuck off that eren never seems to get allergies. then he feels about that because eren is more prone to getting fever, which weighs him down a little worse than the allergies could.
modern ! they do game together sometimes, & they both have to pretend that they're not as competitive about it as they are.
modern ! armin walks around the apartment with airpods in when he's listening to a podcast. eren yaps at him for ten minutes sometimes before realizing that armin hasn't heard a word. sorry, fam :|
floch & eren
dead ass, floch was pro "bully eren" for years until the aftermath of shiganshina. floch mostly, like the best of them associated eren with being overly loud, ambitious, & honestly overrated. he thought that listening to eren talk was essentially like hearing a chihuahua go full force.
when it came to making plans for how the jaegerists would actualize their agenda (despite the scouts efforts), floch was primarily responsible for strategizing how they would move throughout the city & the area. he's good with maps & more familiar with the area than eren & zeke were.
floch finds it difficult to understand any attraction he has to eren - it is true that he learns to deify the symbol that eren presents himself as. at the same time, he has to strategize with him & point out his weaknesses. & so he sees some of the residual pieces of humanity in eren before he commits his worst. however, it comes at the same time that floch makes peace with his own self-loathing. it then becomes difficult to tease apart attraction, deification, humanity, & self-hatred.
modern ! while eren likes doing art more between the two of them, there are moments when floch thinks that he would like to learn more about photography. he likes taking pictures of eren. he tries to tae photos that would help promo eren's work, too, though he sends it to eren to post first.
modern ! floch thinks a lot more about social mobility than does eren. he thinks that it means there are things about him eren can't quite understand.
modern ! floch & eren listen to soundcloud together.
bertolt & reiner
after they infiltrated shiganshina, they did field work with survivors of the fall of the walls. they never discussed the possibility of trying to abandon marley's cause. even if they trusted each other, they did not trust each other well enough to entertain the idea of treason. furthermore, guilt made it difficult to imagine being anything but a weapon.
bertolt survives ! after the rumbling, bertolt doesn't want to travel. he struggles with the idea of working as a peace ambassador because it feels too public, too friendly, & too much of a farce when he feels as though he has been made to play two sides. of course, this makes him very useful as an ambassador. he would rather train as a medic or else work administrative places, but he feels that he might be a less benevolent person than he should want to be. reiner carries a lot of guilt & feels compelled to travel as an active ambassador. they struggle to come to a decision, between the two of them.
modern ! bertolt is the worst person to get dinner with from a restaurant. he will not say what he wants to eat because he's not picky. reiner mentions one food? 100% that sounds great. or how about this food? 100% that sounds great. bertolt is equally invested in all meal opportunities.
modern ! reiner is passenger princess. bertolt enjoys it, in part because he likes driving. reiner has a day every three months where he sort of blusters about wanting to drive, but otherwise likes watching bertolt drive.
tsukishima & kuroo
kuroo showed up at the museum one day to ask for a tour when tsukishima was scheduled to give tours. it was supposed to be a romantic gesture, probably, except tsukishima was already booked for a summer camp. so kuroo was just kinda there.
when kageyama & tsukishima traveled to brazil to visit hinata, tsukishima got atrociously sunburned. hinata took it upon himself to send a picture to kuroo of the sunburn (which impressively was interrupted by a handprint where sunscreen hadn't washed off). kuroo was appropriately horrified by the burn but delighted by the fact that hinata sent it to him. tsukishima refuses to explain why hinata sent it to kuroo - partly out of pride, & partly because he just suspects it was a drunken decision.
tsukishima thinks he's being ironically funny when he pesters kuroo to wear his jersey. however, kuroo should technically not wear any team's jersey or should technically wear all teams' jerseys. it makes tsukishima feel a little competitive.
akiteru met kuroo on accident & without kei's permission. when kei met kuroo's sister, it was a much more intentional affair.
at one point, they switched from watching movies in english to watching american reality tv shows. tsukishima was overly invested, & kuroo was mildly horrified.
miscellaneous : bonus !
uri & kuchel are in frequent correspondence with one another when it comes to exchanging photos of levi. most of these photos levi does not know exist.
levi would rather die than be nosy in uri & kenny's medicine cabinet.
porco has purposefully locked reiner out of reiner's own phone. it seemed funny at the time.
connie is accidentally the loudest fucking houseguest when he stays overnight at eren's place.
reiner & armin genuinely cannot decide whether they should tell eren that they hooked up. it shouldn't be the end of the world if they told him, but what if?

tarantulas/mesothulas for the headcanon meme?
Headcanon A: realistic
i assume that the actual period in which mesothulas and prowl worked together was substantial, but not that long. i think by the time Sins happens, it has been longer by far since they saw each other than they ever actually like... worked together for. when prowl throws him in the noisemaze, they're still on cybertron, and more to the point there's clearly still major settlements of civilians on cybertron. (it's the inciting incident, in fact.) we know mass evacuations started about four million years prior to canon, if my timeline is in order, after which things increasingly moved offworld. anyway, i think they worked together from about the start of the war through to somewhere before the million year mark at most, so mesothulas(/tarantulas) has had a very, very long time to stew over the version of events his brain has settled on when we see him in Wreckers. which... well i'm sure that was very healthy and fine probably, look at him, he's a model of emotional stability.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
i do think the concept that he's sort of lying about never even trying to join either side because of his Aloof Neutral Objectivity is. a little bit of a lie. is very funny. he briefly tried to join the decepticons for purely pragmatic reasons (shockwave had a very fancy lab) and shockwave was like. hm. no. massive liability. and now mesothulas is like "oh i would never even BOTHER WITH THOSE IDIOTS nope i am far above all that actually". seems like the sort of thing he'd do.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
i am increasingly convinced of the idea it works to have the original impetus for tarantulas to make his time travel device be some kind of plan to go like. take ostaros out of the timestream before anything ever happened and start again with him. (presumably erasing springer in the process.) it strikes me as completely unrealistic he'd never have even considered it when coming up with that idea. so him not doing so makes the most sense to me if it's an idea which (having watched, and grown attached to, springer as he currently is) he actively abandoned.
i think he's telling the truth that when he abandoned this idea he was 100% onboard for all the 'fuck around with the specimen' stuff, but his original goal being an aborted one to go get ostaros fits fine with that.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
do i think the relationship mesothulas had to shockwave was supposed to be senator shockwave? no, obviously it's supposed to be post-shadowplay evil amoral scientist shockwave. do i think it is way too fun to imagine pre-war shockwave as mesothulas' benefactor despite all those red flags i'm sure were visible from ten miles away, because, well, senator shockwave was a little morally dubious and mesothulas was very good at science? absolutely. 100%. you'll pry it out my cold dead hands.

Hi there! May I request an angst + fluff scenario of Mikasa finding out her female s/o is pregnant. Like she finds out after her s/o got injured during a mission and finds out when they are being treated? Idk if this makes sense but thank you!
C/n: HOW ADORABLE!!! Mama Mikasa back at it again. Thanks for requesting and I hope that you enjoy🤍
———————————————————————
You’re What?! (Mikasa x Reader)
Titans. Titans everywhere. Levi’s Squad were the first on the scene and just in time. “Ackerman! Springer! Get the left! L/n and I will take the right. Th rest of you! Take down as much as you can!” Levi orders and shoots his gear. You looked to Mikasa and gave her a wink before taking off.
Everyone succeeded in their respective positions to take the beasts down. You had just finished taking one down and looked around to see for any survivors. Nothing. As you were about to take off, in the corner of your eye you see an abnormal heading straight for you. “Fuck.” You mumble and turn to face it. You shot your gear and as you were getting ready to slice it, another gear shot on it and bumped into you, making you knock into a nearby building.
Mikasa stood and waited for you. Levi was back, Connie was back so where were you? “Captain!” A voice calls to Levi and Mikasa turns to see Floch. “What is it?” Levi asks. “It’s Y/n. Her gear must’ve been faulty because she got knocked by a Titan into a building.” He explains and Mikasa’s eyes widen. Not even thinking, she shoots her gear and goes to find you. “Tch. Where are they?”
Mikasa looks at the buildings and comes across a Titan who was decomposing. She stands down and looks around. “Y/N!” She calls out to you and looks on the third floor of a building and sees a hand sticking out, slightly waving. Mikasa gasps and shoots up to land by you. “Fuck, Y/n. Honey? Are you okay?” She asks as she takes the wood off of you and you wheeze out. “M-Mikasa. It hurts.” She looks down to see your hand injured and wood pierced through your thigh. She examines it and sighs. “You’re alright. It’s okay. I’m here. We’ll get you out of here.” She assures you and the rest of the squad comes to see to you.
~~~~
You were knocked out for a few hours and Mikasa sat next to your hospital bed while you recovered. She was waiting for the doctor to come in and fill her in on your condition. As she waits, she brushed the hair out of your face and kisses your cheek. “Sleep well, beautiful.” She whispers and sits back down.
The door opens to reveal the doctor who performed surgery on you. “Mikasa. She’s doing good. Her leg will heal with time. I give it a month and her hand was sprained so nothing major.” He tells her and she nods. “That’s great.” She says and looks to you. The doctor refills your IV and looks back at his documents. “Oh and the baby is fine, luckily. Congratulations by the way.” He says and Mikasa’s eyes widen. “What?” She asks and the doctor raises an eyebrow. “Did you not know? Y/n came here two months ago for an IVF treatment and it was successful.” He happily says and Mikasa is shocked. You were...pregnant?
The doctor leaves and Mikasa stares at your tummy. She rests her hand on it and caresses it. Now that she knew, it did make sense that your tummy was a bit bigger and that you and her couldn’t do the do. Shortly after, you begin to wake up and you see Mikasa’s hand on you. “Mika?” You say and she turns to look at you with tears in her eyes. “Baby. Whats wrong?” “Why didn’t you tell me, Y/n?” She asks and you gasp softly. “Why didn’t you say anything? You wouldn’t have to go on missions and this wouldn’t have happened.” Mikasa says and you cup her cheeks. “Mika. I’m sorry. I just wanted to be sure. The doctors told me that they weren’t 100% sure it work. But, it did now. Mika, we’re gonna be a family.” You say and Mikasa smiles and hugs you. “Yeah. We are.” You scoot to the side of the bed and allow Mikasa to come snuggle with you as she rubs your tummy.
“Babe. How did you get knocked into the building? Did a Titan do it?” Mikasa asked you and you shake your head making her wake up and look at you. “Huh?” “It was a person. Someone maneuvered into me when I was clearly going good to kill it.” You shake your head and Mikasa’s eyes widen. “I’ll be right back.” She says quickly and pecks your forehead. “Huh? Wait!”
~~~~
“Yeah. Mikasa will be mine. She’ll leave that idiot in no time.” Floch brags to his subordinates and they laugh. They look behind him and quickly shut up and turn to leave. “Where y’all going?” “So you’re the one who pushed my spouse into the building resulting in them having their leg injured?” Floch turns to see Mikasa furious and her fists clenched. “Mikasa. I didn’t do that!” “Oh really? Because they’re having my kid. So,” she grabs him by his collar and picks him up, “you messed with my partner and our child. And now it’s time for you to pay.”
Needless to say that later Floch came to apologize with a bandage around his head and arms. He also got kicked out of missions for three months and was on stable duty. Don’t mess with Ackermans.

headcanons meme : requested by @springmournings
jean & mikasa
mikasa has a quiet step, & so he never hears her approaching. when he jumps, she doesn't understand why. she says something unhelpful like 'i've been here for ages, didn't you know?' & jean has a crisis trying to figure out why he didn't notice. presently, his suspicion is that his hearing is rapidly deteriorating, even at his young age.
when things break, jean is inclined to wanting to try to fix it. does he know how to fix it? no. does he get around to fixing it? it's a fifty-fifty chance. jean is more likely to have clutter around him because of it, & mikasa is more inclined to just wanting to find a replacement. they debate which approach is more efficient.
jean is allergic to the cat mikasa adopted. he pretends that he is not.
modern! they watch jeopardy together. jean absolutely thinks it's a flex when he knows the answer, & he's absolutely trying to look impressive.
modern! jean is competitive at duolingo & fully sends way too may nudges/friendship streak things to mikasa. it's partially because he's competitive, partially because he wants the points.
connie & jean
modern! connie 100% sends pictures of misshapen fruit that he finds at the market to jean with the caption : ' is this u ? '
connie stays closer to home during his time as a peace ambassador largely so that he can stay closer to his mother. when jean travels for work as well, connie checks in on jean's mother & makes sure that she has everything she needs.
connie makes requests of jean sometimes by saying something like 'bet you can't do . . . ' fully knowing that jean can in fact do it. jean fully knows that connie is doing it, & 70% of the time it works even when jean would rather it not.
modern! jean's phone contact in connie's phone is just a horribly zoomed in picture of his face. it's blurry, it's not flattering. connie gives it five stars.
connie doesn't think jean is all that good at gardening. he thinks it's because he's from the city, & even if jean has improved with time --- he just doesn't see it.
armin & mikasa
modern! mikasa's text messages get answered either with a thumbs up if armin is otherwise occupied or a 6-minute voice memo. there's no in-between. that's family, folks!
they have a more difficult time conversing with one another frankly after rumbling. they are still close, but armin feels far too restless to figure out how to feel on the same page as mikasa in the same way.
still, he does mail her souvenirs often enough when he travels. they're not usually kitsch, & instead tend to be dried fruits, tea blends, or books that he thinks she might like.
also, when he is on paradis, he does try to find housing that makes an easy commute to her home too. even if they struggle with conversing, they are not accustomed to being apart -- until travel sets a new norm. it is a strange realization, as they move through adulthood, that they eventually will have spent more time apart than they have together. still, family is family.
modern! neither wants the other to be in charge of the aux cord.
yuki & choso
yuki's license is expired. she is not particularly motivated to get it renewed, but she would go just to watch choso have to deal with the prefectural public safety commission (which provides the similar services as the american dmv)
yuki is a nuisance to train with, mostly because she recommends different routines that she might think to be visually . . . appealing to watch. she enjoys looking.
they've passed time together playing cards. yuki cheats. choso lets her. they're not terribly competitive when it comes to gameplay, but it is a curious thing to see what they'll let one another get away with.
there are few that would deem yuki trustworthy. choso trusted her anyway. it comes as a mystery to her.
jean & armin
there has been some period of time when jean worked in paradis while armin traveled. they never manage to write letters to one another, never manage to figure out how to interact from a distance. everything they say is face-to-face. even if they don't say it aloud at all. there are some things & some shared experiences they never speak about.
they are most relaxed when they travel by sea. when they are confined to boat, it limits their capacity for work. armin is more relaxed when he can hear ocean waves, & it soothes the pair of them.
armin doesn't know that jean has a proclivity for art. he'd like to know, though. he thinks that it's likely that jean has a kinder soul than he, eren, & mikasa put together.
modern ! armin really hates jean's coffee order, & he tries to drink it anyway.
modern ! pretentious about films together tbh. indie film scene come through!

Macro Post #1
Competency F7: Assess population needs, assets, and capacities that affect communities’ health.
Food Insecurity can be a complex topic to talk about sometimes. It can be hard to understand the actual meaning of food insecurity is known as “the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food or the ability to acquire acceptable foods” as stated in Warren & Smalley text. This means that just because communities may have access to foods, they may not have access to necessarily health foods. With how important it is to be able to help individuals live healthier lives and have access to healthy foods, I teamed up with Team Feast to work Feast Down East to be able to assess food assess and insecurity within Pender County, North Carolina.
Feast Down East is a non-profit organization that was based on a UNCW economic development project. It was created in 2010 to be able to help create programs that can help support farm business, distribute local produce and increase access for all consumers. They also work to be able to educate the communities on the importance of buying healthy local produce. Feast Down East is based out of Wilmington but works within and with eleven counties within North Carolina. Including Bladen, Brunswick, Robeson, Pender, Onslow and Sampson counties. For this practicum experience, Feast Down East wanted the team to be able to branch out into Pender County since they did not have as much information and programs working within Pender. The main goal for us was to be able to determine the food needs within the community. To be able to understand the community and accomplish this goal, we created and distributed some surveys to help us gain some insight into the community. We started off this project by creating and delivering an initial survey that was sent to community partners who already worked within Pender. This helped us to gain insight in what was needed to be understood from the Needs Assessment that we were developing, and to figure out exactly the best format and way to get the community involved. The partners that we establish were a various of groups such as food banks, farmers, churches and social services. They gave us some very insightful information in the important questions that needed to be asked such as questions about where they get their food, if they participate in any social services, transportation and the immediate needs families had. We also used this initial survey to be able to get an idea of who would be willing to distribute the survey among the community. Out of the 17 responses 14 partners agreed to distribute our needs assessment.
The Need Assessment was created based on previous food needs assessments resources and based off of the initial survey responses. The total question count for the needs assessment was 67 questions, which would become a later challenge due to the length. When something is too long people may get lost, not want to finish it or not be willing to take it all. It was a hardship to be able to develop a needs assessment with all the factors in mind. The purpose of this needs assessment was to be able to get good insight into the food needs in Pender County. To do this we created the survey in a couple of different formats to be able to get more people participation. It was developed in online format and hard copy format, and in both English and Spanish translations. One partner of Feast Down East, Liz Peterson, who worked with NC Cooperative Extension was able to distribute the needs assessment to over 1,700 people. This would be helpful for us to be able to get a good amount of feedback to be able to have a true understanding of the food needs. The responses that were received was approximately 100, which were not all completed. This data will then be analyzed and help us to be able develop a meaningful event for Pender county.
Food insecurity tends to be higher in rural areas where most of food is usually grown for the rest of the county. (Warren & Smalley, 2014) Food insecurity can look different within a rural context because of the disparities that many rural counties can face. It can be caused due to the lack of resources, poverty, and lack of education among many other factors. The importance to understand food insecurity within Pender county is essential because it will help to be able to provide communities within better access and availability. I think that with this group we can be able to make a great Impact in Pender County with the help of our preceptor at Feast Down East and all of the local resources.

A How artistic are you? I’m not at all. Do you want to go to Africa? I’d love to stay at Giraffe Manor! AC/DC or Aerosmith? Aerosmith.
Do you know what Armenia is?
Yes.
B
What’s your beer of choice (if any)? Blech, none. Do you know the title of Buffalo Springfield’s one-hit wonder? Okay, I didn’t recognize the name so I Googled it and yes, I am familiar with their one hit wonder. I actually wasn’t familiar with the song title either, but after reading the lyrics I quickly realized what song it was. Do you have a brother? (Do you like it that way?) I have two brothers, and yes I love them. Which bank do you use? Not sharing that. C
Which comedian do you most enjoy? I think Kevin Hart is funny. Would you ever live in California? I have all my life. Is it possible/likely that you’ll become a cat lady? *Dog lady, but yes. How many different countries have visited? Just one. D
Do you believe there’s a devil? Yes. But demons maybe? Yes. Does eating dessert often make you feel guilty? Nope. Can you legally drive? I’m definitely old enough to have my license, but I don’t. What have you been diagnosed with (if you don’t mind sharing)? Depression, anxiety, and other physical health stuff. E
How often do you drink energy drinks? I like to drink Starbucks Doubleshot energy drinks often.
Where did you live when you were 11 years old? The house next door to where I live now, ha. We had our big move to the house next door to us haha about 10 years ago because our landlords wanted to install new flooring and stuff to our house, but since they had just finished this one they offered for us to just move in here lol. Do you like the actor who played Edward Scissorhands in that movie?
Why not just say Johnny Depp? Anyway, yes, I think he’s a very talented actor. Have you ever felt an earthquake? No, just aftershocks from one. F
When was the last time you saw your father one-on-one? Yesterday. Do you think French is the most beautiful language? I don’t know what I’d say is the most beautiful language. Have you ever been on an island? No. I live on one in Animal Crossing, though. ha. Would you be able to locate Indonesia on a globe? I think so. Do you know if Iceland or Greenland has more ice? Greenland. I remember it’s the opposite of their name for some reason.

Do you know how Jell-O is made? I know how to make Jell-O with the mix, but no I don’t know how the mix itself is made. K
Have you tried Krispy Kreme doughnuts? (Was it love at first bite?) Yeah, but no they’re definitely not my favorite. They’re not real donuts to me, they’re just pure sugar.
How many pairs of khaki pants do you own? “Uh, khakis?” ha, if you know, you know. Anyway, I don’t own any.
Have you ever been a fan of the Killers? Yeah. L
Does it bother you when couples are lovey-dovey in public? No, unless they’re having like full on makeout sessions, straddling each other and feeling each other up and whatnot lol. Hand holding/locked arms/arm around each other, hugging, little pecks, and just being playful with each other is cute.
Do you have your own lighter (why or why not)? No. I don’t have a need for one. In how many languages (besides English) can you count to 100? I can in Spanish. What’s your favorite lollipop flavor? Not a lollipop fan. M
Do you believe in miracles (why or why not)? I do because I'm a woman of faith. What do you think of shows like Maury and Jerry Springer? I used to like watching Maury, Jerry Springer was just for laughs.
Do you care that Mars (the candy co.) uses deadly animal testing? I haven’t heard that... I’d have to fact check. How did you form your opinion of marijuana? Based off the research supporting that it has a lot of benefits. I was especially swayed when I saw how it helped cancer patients.
N
How often do you sleep naked? Never. I wouldn’t find that comfortable at all, I very much like being clothed. Do you actually check the Nutrition Facts before eating something? Not usually, but I sometimes will just out of curiosity.
Who is your favorite musical artist/band beginning with ‘N’? Nirvana.
How nerdy are you (in what ways)? I’m socially awkward, for one. I also cared about school and did well, which is often considered nerdy. Also, a book nerd, Star Wars nerd, Marvel and DC movies nerd... I enjoy those things so I don’t care, but they’re deemed “nerdy.” What do you think about olives? Black olives are good, green olives are gross. Are you much of an outdoorsy person? Not at all. The only time I enjoy being outside is when I’m sitting out at the beach. How big of an Oprah fan are you? I don’t really consider myself a fan. How often do you shop online?
Quite often. P
Are you looking forward to your prom? If you already went, how was it? My prom was over a decade ago D: Anyway, I danced with the guy I had a huge crush on at the time, so hey it wasn’t too bad. How are your local policemen? I think they do a pretty good job overall. What is your ideal PB&J sandwich like? Just peanut butter and grape jelly, pretty simple. What do you think of the movie ‘Pineapple Express’? I could not get into that movie at all. Q
How true is the saying, ‘quitters never win and winners never quit’? I mean, can’t say “never”, but the main point from the saying makes sense. Do you prefer Quiznos or Subway and why? I’ve gone to Subway many times, but I think I’ve only been to a Quiznos once or twice. Have you learned the quadratic formula yet? (Do you remember it?) I think I actually remember it. What is the one question you most want to ask someone and who?
I don’t know. R
How many rooms are in your home? 2 bedrooms.
Do you like raspberries?
Nah. What’s one of your best memories from during a rain storm? Hmm. I don’t know, but I just really love that kind of weather.
Have you actually read Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’? Yeah, my freshman year in high school. S
Do you know any Sign Language? I know the alphabet and a few sayings. What is your sleeping schedule generally like? Oh, my sleeping schedule is an absolute joke. How well do you sing? I can’t sing well at all. How often do you listen to 60-70’s music? Now and then. I actually have several songs on my main Spotify playlist from those decades. T What do you think of Twitter? I like being able to post my random thoughts and following certain celebrities and just interesting people for funny and interesting stuff. How much do you value the Ten Commandments? I value them a lot. Are there many trees where you live? Not really.
How much taller/shorter do you wish to be? “I wish I was a little bit taller.” 🎶
U
Where do you usually buy your underwear? Various places. How do you define ‘ugly’? It goes a lot deeper than just the outer appearance. Do you like to shop at Urban Outfitters? I’ve only been to an actual store a couple times and I’ve checked out their website a few times, but I just think they’re ridiculously overpriced. V
Would you like being described as ‘voluptuous’? No one would use that word to describe me.
For listening to music, do you like to crank up the volume or keep it calm? I like it at a reasonable level, I don’t need it blaring. Do you ever watch the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show? They cancelled that a few years ago, but I never had any interest in watching that.
Would you agree that ‘variety is the spice of life’? Yeah. W
Are you currently on wireless Internet? Yeah, that’s all I have. I haven’t had to connect to a wifi router or whatever with a cord in a very long time. Can you recall memories of learning how to whistle? I still can’t do it. Do you go to White Castle or just vicariously through ‘Harold & Kumar'? I’ve never actually been to one cause they don’t have one anywhere near me (they’re on the east coast, I’m a west coast gal). I’ve only had the the White Castle burgers from the store that you cook in the microwave. I actually like them, but I’m sure the real deal is even better. X
Why did you need your most recent x-ray and what were the results? I had to get a CT Scan a couple years ago. When it comes to ‘xoxo’, do you interpret ‘x’ as the hug or the kiss? It’s hugs and kisses, so the X’s are hugs. What does X stand for in Roman numerals? Can you write the previous number? X is 10, IX is 9. Why do you think xylophones are only popular with young children? That’s true, that is a pretty common baby toy. At least it was when I was little. Also, I played the xylophone in music class in elementary school. I don’t know why that’s a thing with kids. Y
Can you explain the meaning of the yin-yang symbol? Opposite, but complimentary principles. Like, you can’t have good without bad, lightness without darkness, etc. It’s about balance. Do people more often mistake you as being younger or older than you are? Younger. Did you know that yawning is contagious? Yeah. Would you like a bottle of Yoo-Hoo or it’s not really your thing? I actually like Yoo-Hoo, but I prefer it in the little carton or whatever with the straw (kinda like a Capri Sun, but it’s a box carton). It’s the perfect size, not too much. The strawberry one is my favorite. I haven’t had one in a long time, though. Z
How many places’ zip codes do you know by heart? Uhh, not many. What comes to mind when I say ‘Zero to Hero’? Disney’s Hercules movie.

Macropost #1
Competency F7: Assess population needs, assets, and capacities that affect communities’ health.
Food plays a vital role in every person’s life. While most people in the United States almost never think about where their next meal is coming from, 13.7 million US households face this problem of food insecurity every day. That is 10.5% of US households according to the United States Department of Agriculture Economic Research Services (USDA ERS, 2019). This semester, I chose to be part of Team FEAST to work with a non-profit organization, Feast Down East. Feast Down East works in the Southeastern region of North Carolina to combat food insecurity in the region, especially among rural communities. They support local farm businesses, educate new farmers on sustainability, distribute local produce, educate the public on the importance of buying local foods to name a few. I am very excited to be a part of this amazing team who does so much for North Carolina.
Feast Down East works in eleven counties in North Carolina, i.e. Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Hoke, Onslow, Pender, Robeson, and Sampson County. Team FEAST, our practicum group, is focusing specifically on Pender County this semester. Our primary goal is to determine the food needs within the county. To accomplish this goal, we distributed a few surveys to gain insight from the community. First, we made and distributed a survey to 40 community partners to gain valuable insight on what the partners wanted to include in the Community Needs Assessment. The community partners consisted of various groups like local food banks, local farmers and faith-based organizations like churches. Only 17 out of the 40 community partners responded to the initial survey and they all provided valuable insight into which questions we should include in our community needs assessment. Their main suggestions were to include questions about transportation, food access, where the locals buy their food, and immediate needs. We also asked if the community partners would be willing to distribute our community needs assessment and 14 agreed to. After receiving the community partner’s responses, we created a 67-question Community Needs Assessment in both English and Spanish that included questions related to the suggestions from the initial survey. The purpose of the Community Needs Assessment was to gain insight on what the food needs in Pender County are. One of Feast Down East’s biggest assets is their community partners as demonstrated by Liz Peterson from NC Cooperative Extension. Liz Peterson distributed our community needs assessment survey to about 1,700 people. Members of the community could complete the survey online or in paper format. We received about 100 responses from the community, although not all surveys were fully completed. Analysis of the survey results is currently underway. We are also in the process of planning a drive through event to distribute food boxes and additional resources related to nutrition, food access, and overall health.
The USDA ERS defines food insecurity as “the lack of access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food” (Smith, Meade, 2019). Ironically, food insecurity is higher in rural areas where most food is typically grown for the rest of the nation (Warren, Smalley, 2014). Rural grocery stores tend to sell inexpensive foods with lower nutrients compared to urban grocery stores (Warren, et al., 2014). Food insecurity is a social and economic issue and it is also a concern to public health. North Carolina ranks above the average level of food insecurity in the nation and the Southeastern region of North Carolina is one of the three major areas of persistent poverty in the state (Feast Down East, 2020). Food insecurity also looks different from one rural county to the next (Feeding America, 2018). As we discussed in class, the average cost of a meal in Wayne County, NC is lower than the average cost of a meal in Harnett County, NC. Both of these counties are considered rural, so why is there a difference? One explanation that we discussed in class is because Harnett County is adjacent to Wake County, which is considered an urban county and this changes the context in Harnett County. The overall food insecurity rate in the United States is 11.5% vs. 15.1% for the child food insecurity rate (Feeding America, 2018). As someone who comes from a developing country where food insecurity is seen around every corner, it is hard to wrap my brain around the idea that so many people in the United States, one of the most affluent and influential countries in the world, can be food insecure.
Therefore, I am very grateful that I got chosen to be a part of this practicum group. This practicum has opened my eyes to see the needs of a whole community in terms of food. My peer group members and I all have different career paths in mind, but we all share a common goal and motivation for this project, i.e. to help people! I think Team FEAST can make a great impact in Pender county this semester, especially with the help of our preceptors from Feast Down East, the ladies at the Pender County Health Department, and the partners at NC Cooperative Extension. All of these organizations are very willing to help and they are making our first practicum experience one to remember. I am looking forward to the event that we have planned in a few weeks!

Employment Rate: Does it really affect alcohol consumption?
Is employment rate associated with alcohol consumption?
Hypothesis: An increase in levels of unemployment can lead to increase in alcohol consumption Is suicide per 100th associated with income per person?
Hypothesis: Low income per person can cause an increase in suicidal deaths per 100th.
Having gone through the GapMinder study codebook, I am interested to study more about alcohol consumption and the different variables that can cause an upsurge in alcohol uptake. As a result, I chose employment rate as my variable to be included in my codebook. I also decided to study how suicide per 100th is associated with income per person in relation to the main topic.
Alcohol consumption may be affected by very many factors but my main focus is on how the employment rate affects it. In the long run, a negative employment rate may lead to low income per person and hence suicide. I have witnessed very many youths seeking solace in alcohol as a means of relieving their stress levels due to them being unemployed. They find themselves in situations where they cannot support themselves and their families due to lack of income. Therefore the little they get or have is used on alcohol as much term as a stress reliever.
Literature Review
OECD (2020) defines employment rate as ‘a measure of the extent to which available resources are being used’ and in this case the people available to work. It is usually determined based on the ratio of the employed to the working age population (OECD, 2020). UN (2019a), stated that the global working age population i.e. 15 years and above was estimated to be 5.7 billion people out of which 2.3 billion were not part of the labor force, 3.3 billion were in employment while 188 million were unemployed (ILO, 2020) due to various reasons. Alcohol consumption is an act of ingesting a beverage containing ethanol and is typically done orally (Collins S.E. & Kirouac M. 2013).
The consumption of alcoholic beverages has been there since prehistoric times. Presently, many people consume alcohol as a recreation activity that is however causing more health and social problems (Poli, A. et al, 2013).
Catalano et al (2011) states that unemployment could cause financial challenges that lead to increased uptake of alcohol and more so especially if it is over a prolonged period of time (Khan et al., 2002; Mossakowski,2008). Popovici I. & French M. (2013), conducted a research whose research findings were that unemployed men had a higher binge-drinking rate as compared to men who were employed and that unemployed men had a higher chance of being diagnosed with alcohol abuse and/or dependence. Alcohol consumption, in most cases, is not done on busy schedules and that is why (Arkes 2007; Dee 2001; Ettner 1997) found out that unemployed people have more leisure time and this may encourage social drinking.
It is quite evident that many people did lose their jobs in this Covid 19 pandemic. Some were lucky enough to retain their jobs but on a half pay salary and this meant that people had to adjust their way of living so as to survive. This, in the long run, caused a lot of stressful moments and many people may have turned to drinking alcohol to pass time and to relieve away their stress. Heid, M. (2020) wrote that according to data from Bloomberg News the sales of beer and wine went up by 32% and 47% respectively. This was attributed mainly to the stay-at-home restrictions that were imposed which could otherwise mean more leisure time for alcohol consumption as the Americans felt the need to stock their home bars.
The employment rate, as seen from research, affects alcohol consumption. It can also affect the income per person. Income per person which is also known as Per capita income is the measure of the amount of money earned per person in a specific region (Kenton W, 2019). When the employment rate is high therefore the income per person would also increase since this would mean that the economy can well cater for its citizens. However, low income per person can cause stress and depression which can in the long term affect the health of individuals.
A study conducted by (Aron, L. et al, 2015) found out various ways in which income can affect one’s health. They include people with limited money have less to spend on medicine, doctor visits or even healthy foods, Low income can cause stress that can lead to the development of other terminal diseases like heart disease and that those that earn high incomes are able to access more healthier resources. They also stated that adults who are poor are more likely to report being in fair or poor health as their counterparts with high income. A number of research studies show that there is a positive association between income per person and their health.
Case et al. (2002) did a research that focused on how income affect health right from childhood and the results were that children from low income households who suffer from chronic illnesses have worse health compared to those in high income households. Basically, this more or less develops to adulthood. With decreased levels of income therefore, chances of stress and depression are on the rise hence increase in alcohol consumption which can even cause cases of suicide. Breet E et al (2018) carried out a study on how the low and middle income countries are affected by substance abuse and suicidal ideation and the results were that there was a positive association between substance use, alcohol being one of them, and suicidal ideas. Xuan, Z et al. (2015) also identified that heavy alcohol consumption is associated with suicide.
From the researches above, it is quite evident that employment rate has much to do with alcohol consumption. This is because if more people are employed the rate of alcohol consumption is reduced and the vice versa is true. Increased cases of low income per person due to unemployment can affect people’s stress levels which can otherwise lead to suicide among the affected.

Intro to IR: Country’s Statement
Finland to UN
Statement on Global Climate Change and Sea Level Rising
Sea level rising is an increase in the level of the world's oceans due to the effects of global warming (Magnusson, 2017). Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in earth’s surface temperature since the pre-industrial period (between 1850 and 1900) due to human activities such as, primarily fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth's atmosphere and the Global warming is estimated to have a significant effect on sea level rise in the 20th century (Gornitz, 2007). Global sea level has been rising for the past century, the highest rise in sea level occurred before 6,000 years ago. From 3,000 years ago to the early 19th century and it roses about 0.1 inch (2.5 millimeters) per year in the 1990s to about 0.13 inches (3.4 millimeters) per year today the cause of this phenomena is global warming (Weeman & Lynch, 2018). The effects of higher sea levels are the swells of deadly and destructive storm and they will push farther inland than they once did, which will lead to more frequent nuisance flooding. Now, irritating and demands higher expense, nuisance flooding is predicted to be from 300 percent to 900 percent more frequent within coastal communities than it was just 50 years ago (Johansson, et al., 2004).
The rise of sea levels gives us more significant impact than we can think of. Not only it will devastate the coastal area but also the inland, though the effects are further in the coastal area. The effects on the coastal area include the destructive of shoreline erosion, the destruction of the habitats of so many creatures, and destroy the nature, and in this case most likely to get soil contaminated (Amelung & Moreno, 2002). The change in sea levels is related to three major factors, all induced by ongoing global climate change. These three major factors are; First, Thermal expansion. The water will expand when it heats up and about half of the sea-level increase over the past 25 years is attributable to warmer oceans simply taking more area (Nunez, 2019); Secondly, Melting glaciers. Each summer, large ice formations like mountain glaciers naturally melt a bit. The evaporations in the winter, snow, mostly seawater is generally enough to balance out the melting. Freshly, continuously higher temperatures caused by the global warming have led to greater-than-average summer melting as well as snowfall due to then winters and earlier springs, it creates an disproportion between ocean evaporation and runoff, causing sea levels to increase (Nunez,2019); Lastly, The loss of ice sheet in Greenland and Antarctica is the same as for mountain glisters, the increase in heat causes massive melting of ice and causes the cover of Greenland and Antarctica to melt faster. The melting in western Antarctica has attracted a lot of attention from scientists, especially with the breakdown of the Larsen C ice sheet in 2017 (Nunez,2019). The acceleration of Sea Level Rise (SLR) has become a global threat that may cause harm to other countries around the world (Yusuf, J., et al, 2014). SLR is one of the key problems in this world caused by Climate Change. Climate Change itself has become a global concern by national, international, supranational, and subnational governments in other countries (Yusuf, J, et al, 2014). What people think now is SLR a common problem so it is considered as low politics. Low Politics itself can be defined as a concept that is not obviously vital to the survival of a state in social and economic affairs (Jackson & Sørensen, 2007). If this is considered a low politics problem, we must rethink twice. Because, climate change does not affect one country, instead mostly all countries around the globe. For instance, SLR may cause harm to national security, diplomacy, and military in countries. It also affects a relationship between one country to another. From these simple examples we can assume that rising sea level caused by climate change is not considered as low politics. Politics play an important role in climate change problems. Because, the governments make policies to counter this problem with huge consideration. If the policies succeed to play its part and make benefits to other countries if possible, then the roles of state actors are fulfilled. All types of responses to SLR, including protection, accommodation, forward and backward, have an important and synergistic role to play in an integrated and sequential response to SLR (Henry, O. et al., 2014). Selecting and implementing responses is further challenged through a lack of resources, irritating trade-offs between safety, conservation and economic development, various ways of framing 'sea level rise issues', power relations, and various coastal stakeholders who have conflicting interests in the future development of highly used coastal zones. All of this can happen and will have a significant impact if actors from different countries of the world can work together to solve the SLR problem.
Finland, as one of the countries affected by climate change, sea level rise is seen as not a major problem like other countries. On the other hand, in Finland there are other problems, such as rising land levels and flooding in certain areas. For example, in eastern Finland (the bay of Bothnia), the plains tilt upwards causing the western part to be lower. The land surface rise of 3-9 mm per year is caused by a geological process called the post-glacial uplift (Magnusson, 2017). This land level rise can have a negative impact on the surrounding community, such as disruption of sea transportation activities and the occurrence of land disputes due to the increase in the area of Finland by 700 hectares per year. The western part of Finland is becoming lower, causing rainwater to be easily collected so that flooding is easier in the area. The impact of the flood itself is disruption of the lives of people living in the surrounding area. The floods were deep enough to force people in western Finland to evacuate and lose some of their valuables (Puiu, 2017). Finland is a country that cares about their nature as explained in the nation’s epic poem, Kalevala in Brittlebank (2014) said “Life itself is preserved in the elements of nature. We must not take nature as given or for granted, but as people, we have to sustain nature’s diversity so that our children’s children can fully enjoy nature as it stands.” which means nature supports life, but we as humans also need to support nature as well (Brittlebank, 2014). Therefore, we would like to propose some solutions to prevent and even stop this global threat. The Solutions are beach nourishment along the finnish coast and beaches, dune restoration, and reinforcing shoreline protection. In support of the saying, according to Darby (2019), “Responding to Rising Seas OECD Country Approaches to Talking Coastal Risk”, there are some strategies that OECD countries did, such as beach nourishment and dune restoration, reinforcing shoreline protection through planting vegetation, etc., also preventing new development in areas at risk of flood or erosion through land-use regulation/zoning (Darby, 2019). One of the main causes of rising sea levels is global warming which is the effect of carbon emission, which is why Finland is planning to be carbon neutral by 2035 (Darby, 2019). The plan involves a rapid scaling up of wind and solar power, to electrify heating and transport – all within one investment cycle. Bioenergy use increases 10% under this scenario, mainly from agricultural waste and forest residues, to ensure its sustainability. Peat production as one of the contributors of Finland’s energy will also be stopped across the country, which will leave a lot of people without jobs, that is why this plan must be well-prepared (Darby, 2019).

Speech 100: Social Gaming
[1B Blog Post 6: Week 10]

[Bethesda’s ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ 2011]
With the increasing popularity with online gaming, and more recently mobile gaming, so too comes the research and recognition that they can improve our daily lives. Games which have been designed with a primary purpose outside entertainment, have demonstrated effectiveness in engaging learning solutions. Ranging from adolescent to the working adult levels of education (Baek, Ko, March 2014).
Video games improve motivation, stimulate deep learning and creative thinking. This is achieved through mentally or sensually stimulating experiences, unique to gaming. This can lead to enhanced efficiency of performance within a classroom or workplace. As simulated situations offer less pressure and ease for improvement. A sense of familiarity or openness towards new technology can also be obtained (Bourgonjon, Valcke, Soetaert, de Wever, Schellens 2010).
Offering collaborative play to accomplish set goals provides an incentive for players to help out others and seek help themselves. MMORPGs, in particular, represent a new form of social interaction and thus community. A place in which newly found human relationships are created (Zhong 2011).
Cooperation, however, is generally difficult to achieve amongst egocentric players. Which is likely to become elevated within groups exceeding 4-9 members. In smaller communities, cooperation can often be stabilized by reciprocity and communication. However, in larger communities, these mechanisms can often be ineffective. Individual influence on others often diminishes due to the difficulty of having to observe an increased amount of people and situations. For this reason, many successful developers and communities have established systems which enforce mutual cooperation (Hilbe, Wu, Traulsen, Nowak 2014).
Asides participation in gaming, millions of people now also enjoy watching the gameplay of others (Needleman 2015). Content creation via platforms such as Youtube and especially Twitch gave us the concept of “Let's plays” and eSports. Whilst the legitimacy of user-generated content falls under debate of classifying media content: in particular, copyright infringement, audience gratification is still obtained (Sjöblom, Törhönen, Hamari, Macey 2017).
Both Youtube and Twitch offer chat systems, which can often be hectic or nonsensical to follow, especially on popular gaming uploaders or streamers.
[Giphy 2017]
Recently various social networking platforms have taken an integration with gaming. Such as Discord offering exclusive releases (Discord 2018) or Facebook providing its own service for watching eSports or streams (Facebook 2019). And perhaps most notably, Twitch’s partnership with Amazon Prime to provide in-game items, or even certain games via a subscription service (Twitch 2019). Promotional news which will naturally also generate conversation.
At the end of the day, however, its all in the bonding potential across various individuals and groups. Whether it be parents and their children engaging in ‘console couch wars’, making new friends online or having to be entertained in unison of like-minded peers in your favourite streamers chat.
Speaking of which, I’d really appreciate it if you would please take the time to check out my friends Twitch channel, @twitch.tv/danionc.
I hope you enjoyed your food for thought, with a serving of black forest danish. Please come again!

Excerpt from this piece from the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation:
A state-of-the-art climate model, funded by the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation and released by the prestigious scientific publisher Springer Nature, offers a roadmap for meeting -- and surpassing -- the targets set by the Paris Climate Agreement, proving that we can solve the global climate crisis with currently available technologies. The book, entitled Achieving the Paris Climate Agreement, was the culmination of a two-year scientific collaboration with 17 leading scientists at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), two institutes at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the University of Melbourne’s Climate & Energy College.
As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned in its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR1.5) released October 2018, the Earth must be kept below the dangerous threshold of 1.5°C in global average temperature rise above pre-industrial levels if we are to avoid a worsening of climate-related impacts.
Up until now, it was assumed to be difficult if not impossible to achieve the carbon budget required to stay below 1.5˚C -- equivalent to approximately 320 billion tonnes (Gt) of net carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) above early 2018 levels*. Humans today release approximately 40 GtCO2 per year, mostly from the burning of fossil fuels – coal, oil, and natural gas. At our current level of emissions, we would only have 7 years to completely cease the use of all fossil fuels, which is clearly not feasible. While many scientists have modeled 1.5°C climate mitigation pathways, to date almost all of them require the use of unproven and potentially dangerous geoengineering strategies like Solar Radiation Management (SRM) or Bio-energy with Carbon Capture & Storage (BECCS).
The One Earth climate model is groundbreaking in that it shows the 1.5°C can be achieved through a rapid transition to 100% renewables by 2050, alongside land restoration efforts on every continent that increase the resilience of natural ecosystems and help to ensure greater food security. These restoration efforts pull carbon out of atmosphere and store that carbon in forests and in the soil, creating approximately 400 GtCO2 of what scientists call “negative emissions” (shown in gold below the zero line), which allow us to stay below the 1.5°C limit.

The proposed energy transition outlined in the One Earth climate model will require an investment globally of approximately $1.7 trillion per year. This sounds like a lot, but it pales in comparison to the vast subsidies governments currently provide to prop up the ailing fossil fuel industry, estimated at more than $5 trillion per year by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Taxpayers are unwittingly funding the climate crisis, and that needs to stop. The research tells us that we could be creating the clean energy future we so desperately need for less than one-third of what we’re spending now, and in so doing improve energy access in the developing world.
