This is a special birthday drabble i’m writing up for @rose-sparks13

She always is super nice and likes/reblogs/comments on my writing content and today is her BIRTHDAY and I wanted to show my appreciated for her friendship and interaction with a lil birthday fic of her choosing! :)

The sweet quiet of sleep was broken by the buzz of your phone alarm telling you to WAKE UP! Groaning you reached a hand out from under the warm covers of your bed and tried to turn off the alarm but instead slapped it right off the side table and onto the ground. 

“Shit...” you groaned, peeking out from the comforter and nearly falling out of bed to grab your phone up off the floor, making sure the screen didn’t crack on the way down. Several notifications popped up as you blinked away the remains of sleep. 

“Happy Birthday!”

“OMG HAPPY BIRTHDAYYYYY!!”

“happy birthday...it’s today, right?”

“Someone told me it’s your birthday today, so happy birthday!”

“ITS YOUR BIRTHDAY DAY OF BIRTH BIRTHDAYBIRTHDAYBIRTDYAYAYYAAYAY!!!111!!!!”

You smiled reading through the texts from your classmates wish you a happy birthday today. You didn’t want to make a big deal out of it but your closest friends - Kirishima and Bakugou - knew; Bakugou was tight-lipped with most things, so it was probably Kirishima who spread the word around. 

“Everyone’s so awesome...maybe I’ll go out later and get myself a nice big piece of cake,” you said as drool pooled out the side of your mouth down onto your pillow case thinking about delicious cake. “Oh...but we have classes today. Ugh.” 

Several of the girls in the communal bathroom wished you ‘happy birthday’ once more as you all got ready for class. Mina and Ochaco both gave you big hugs while you were brushing your teeth, nearly making you choke on toothpaste; either way you enjoyed the sentiment and excitement. 

Since everyone was now living in the dorms it was customary to all walk to class together. You were sandwiched between Kirishima and Bakugou as usual with Kirishima’s arm thrown around your shoulders while he asked you excitedly if you had any plans for the day. Bakugou remained unusually quiet; not that he wasn’t normally quiet (when not yelling, that is), just...more quiet than usual. Maybe he was just in a bad mood, today for some reason. 

“Oh man birthdays are so great! It’s a day just for you!”

“Yeah, I guess it is! I don’t wanna make a big deal out of it, but...oh it’s still exciting!” You couldn’t help but skip ahead with a huge smile on your face before throwing a victory punch in the air. Kirishima gave a small thumbs-up to Bakugou behind your back as the blonde pursed his lips while watching your drama and excitement. 

A few people from different classes and even Aizawa wished you a happy birthday, but after lunch things died down and classes resumed as usual. No one had given you anything, which you didn’t really mind - the fact that they acknowledge your birthday at all made you feel happy and appreciated. You ate lunch with your friends and, once again, Bakugou was unusually quiet. When you talked to him he spoke up, but otherwise seemed to be pointedly ignoring you. Did you do something to make him mad? The thought made the rest of your lunch unappetizing. 

You hadn’t told anyone of your crush on Bakugou - not even Kirishima, who you knew couldn’t keep a secret too long. He didn’t seem like the type to care about relationships with his hyper-focus on becoming the #1 Hero and surpassing everyone in your class...so you kept your feelings to yourself, even if it hurt. 

“Hey, where’re you going?” Kirishima asked as you walked out of the school and away from the dorms. 

“Oh, I was just going to buy myself some cake-”

“NO!” Bakugou suddenly yelled. It was the most emotion he’d displayed all day. “Dumbass you don’t buy your own cake on your damn birthday.” Kirishima gave him a knowing look and rolled with Bakugou’s lead. 

“Y-yeah! He’s right! You go back to the dorms and relax and we’ll go grab you some cake. Deal?”

You looked between the two boys with an ounce of suspicion before shrugging your shoulders and submitting to their offer of free cake. “Hmm...yeah, alright. You know my favorite flavor, right?”

“Oh, definitely! It’s...uh...”

“Chocolate, you dolt.” The fact that Bakugou remembered your favorite flavor made your heart flutter, but you pushed the feeling down, remembering your promise to yourself that you wouldn’t interfere with his goals and dreams. 

You nodded to confirm the answer. “See you guys later!” As you ran back to the dorms, you didn’t see the hushed whispers between the two boys. 

The attempt to do homework in your room was a bust since you couldn’t concentrate at all. Your parents had called earlier to wish you a happy birthday as well and said you should get your gifts in the mail tomorrow after apologizing for being a day late. 

“Ugh, it should be illegal to do homework on your birthday...” you groaned, slamming the textbook shut and flopping down on your bed. “I wonder where my cake is...” You’d texted Kirishima earlier since they’d been gone several hours, but no reply so far. Suddenly a knock came at your door. “Come in!”

Ochaco and Tsu stood in your doorway. “Hey (y/n)! Did you have a good birthday, today?” Tsu asked. 

“Oh yeah, it was pretty great! Thanks for everything, I don’t think anyone forgot which is nice.”

“We came up here to tell you Kaminari is going to try drinking a whole gallon of milk and wants an audience.” You slapped a hand over your face with an exhausted sigh. 

“Yeah, that sounds like him...ok, ok, I can’t concentrate on homework anyway. Onward to the show!” They led you downstairs but it was surprisingly dark. “Uh, what’s-”

SURPRISE!!!!!!

Suddenly the lights turned on as everyone in your class popped out from various pieces of furniture. You should have known they were planning something considering what they did for the other people in your class, but this was the first birthday after everyone moved in together. 

Sato presented you with a big chocolate cake complete with candles that Momo made and your favorite color icing decorating the top with your name. You couldn’t help but feel grateful teers tickle your eyelashes. “Everyone..this is...so nice?! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!” You couldn’t imagine this day getting any better as pieces of cake were handed out - you got the biggest slice - and everyone dug in eagerly. 

Sitting next to Kirishima you noticed Bakugou was decidedly missing. “Hey, where’s Explodo McNugget?” Kirishima nearly spat out his cake at your nickname for him. You only called him ridiculous and embarrassing nicknames when he wasn’t around to give you an earful. 

“Uh, he said he’ll show up later.” He avoided your questioning gaze while stuffing another piece of cake into his pointy mouth. You wished Bakugou was here to enjoy this party with you, but you were well aware he wasn’t exactly a social butterfly and would rather spend time along than endure class antics. 

Everyone wished you one last HAPPY BIRTHDAY as the party wound down and you started making your way back to your room; however, you were stopped with a strong grip snagged you by the arm and nearly dragged you outside into the cool air of the night. 

“Hey! What-”

“It’s me, chill out.” You knew that gravely voice anywhere. Bakugou finally stopped when he was clear of the lights surrounding the building, letting go of your arm as he stuffed his hands into his pockets. 

“Hey...why weren’t you at the party? I know you aren’t really a party person, but I dunno, woulda been nice if you were there. Sato’s cake was really good, too.” It was hard to read his expression under the veil of darkness, but his red eyes always captured your attention. He let out a huff before shifting his eyes away. 

“I had to figure some shit out.”

“Oh...is something wrong? No offense, but you’ve been acting kinda weird today...” You hesitated bringing up his behavior knowing how easily he could blow up sometimes at an accusation. “Are you mad at me about something?” The question dragged his attention away from an invisible something in the darkness and onto you. 

“What? No, I’m not pissed at you or anything.” He looked like he wanted to say more, but his mouth pulled into a tight line like a freshly-pulled zipper. 

You shifted your feet, nervous that he was actually lying to you as a tactic to downplay any drama on your special day. But you weren’t one to back down, either. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t wanna, I can just tell when something’s on your mind, though. So...why did you rag me out here?” He seemed to stiffen even more at this second question, the muscles in his jaw and arms contracting as he tensed. 

“Fuck, I’m not good at this shit...” he mumbled almost inaudibly, avoiding your stare once more. 

“Whatever it is, just blurt it out! You’re good at that!” 

“FINE! GO OUT WITH ME, GODDAMMIMT!”

After his sudden outburst the air fell eerily still as neither of you moved. Bakugou’s mouth hung open before shutting with a click as his teeth clacked together. 

The words hit you like a speeding truck driving through your chest as the momentum fueled the blood pumping into your heart. “...what?! A-are you serious?” At this third question he actually snarled but you didn’t miss the dusting of red on his cheeks. 

“Of course I’m serious, I wouldn’t say that shit if I wasn’t!”

“You wanna...go out with me?! But..” You trailed off, thinking again of Bakugou’s unwavering dedication to being the best hero he possibly could. “I don’t want to be a distraction to your dream.”

At this he seemed taken aback; he was expecting a solid answer, not you giving some deep emotional analysis. It was too late for that shit. “The hell did you get the idea that you’re a distraction? You’re strong and smart and you don’t hold back; your drive to be a hero is just as strong as mine. So why the hell do you think your damned enthusiasm and energy would hold me back?”

Bakugou just called you strong, probably the best compliment he could give someone. Of course you couldn’t hold him back; he was far too determined to let you or anyone else stand in his way...but maybe this time, you could help and support him - no, support each other - in fulfilling each other’s dreams. 

“You just gonna stand there and not give me an answer?”

“Uh...wh..oh, OH! God, sorry, all this is...yes, Bakugou. I’ll go out with you!” You slapped your hands on your cheeks in excitement as he groaned...with the small tug of a smile on his lips at your answer. 

This really was the best birthday ever.
