“Stay” is the debut single from hip hop group 2-4 Family. It is her only song to feature former band member Jo O'Meara singing, as she soon left the band and joined S Club in 1999. Jo O'Meara takes lead vocals and sings dramatically. It charted at number 8 on the Viva Top 100. The video was added to YouTube on November 5, 2006. As of June 17, 2009, it had 81,707 views. It is 2-4 Family's most successful song ever released.

After the single, a Christmas version of Stay was also released.

THE SORROWS OF MILICA NEMANJIC OF SERBIA

Though often remembered for her diplomacy and regency (1389-1393), one thing some sources and historians fail to mention about Princess Milica is her struggles with motherhood and widowhood, even through her politics.

Early Life

Milica was born sometime in 1335 as the daughter of Duke Vratko, known in Kosovo legends as Jug Bogdan, a descendant of the Nemanjić dynasty; however, the identity of her mother is unknown.

In her early years, Milica would often stay at the court of her cousins, Tsar Dušan and Tsaritsa Jelena. The couple took a liking to her, sponsored her stay at court, and provided her education, thus she permanently settled at court.

It is at the same court where she had the opportunity to meet Lazar Hrebeljanović, six years her senior and, at the time, a young man of lower nobility working as a puter/stavilac.

According to a legend, Milica met Lazar at the same place where she would later build the Ljubostinja Monastery.

There could be some truth to this tale, but it is worth noting that they were likely introduced at court by the same couple who planned for them to marry.

Marriage to Lazar

Sometime in 1353, Milica and Lazar were married by the wish of Dušan and Jelena and with the blessing of her father. The mere fact that the imperial couple arranged their betrothal suggests that Lazar was a well-respected man enough to join the Nemanjić dynasty by kinship.

Though the marriage was for political purposes, as it elevated Lazar’s status and reputation, it is understood through Milica’s poem that they had grown to hold deep affection and value for each other.

Through her poem “To My Widow, O Bridegroom,” it can be understood that Milica viewed Lazar as someone she desired, admired, and found comfort and protection in.

It is worth mentioning that Milica was one of the many reasons Lazar (r. 1365-1389) was able to elevate himself to the title of Prince (Knez) and expand his realm. While his rivals claimed the rest of Serbia due to their Nemanjić ancestry, Lazar, who was not one of their own, likely had to rely on his wife and children’s claim to the “holy” dynasty to gain the trust of the Serbian people.

Throughout their 36-year-long marriage, the couple welcomed eight children, five daughters and three sons, though only seven made it to adulthood.

It seems that the couple enjoyed a harmonious and faithful marriage, as there are no mentions of a mistress or illegitimate children that Lazar could have fathered.

Her Widowhood and Regency

Following the defeat at the Battle of Kosovo in the summer of 1389, Lazar was ordered to be beheaded, leaving behind a venerable realm and his wife at the forefront.

Since his son and heir was too young to be entrusted with the duty of ruling, the Principality of Serbia fell into the hands of the Dowager Princess, Milica.

Though it is possible that Milica might have been educated in diplomacy, she certainly did not have any first-hand experience up until that point. Her primary duties as the wife of a prominent ruler were to expand the dynasty by child-bearing, oversee her children’s education, manage the royal court’s income and expenses, and participate in charities such as hospitals and monasteries—duties in which Milica, as a dutiful mother and consort, excelled.

Constantine the Philosopher described her in the following words: “…pious lady, worthy of glory and wise mother, who surpassed many chosen mothers."

At first, Milica, a fearful mother and mourning widow, wasn’t much interested in staying in Serbia and planned to take temporary refuge with Olivera, Stefan, and Vuk, her youngest children, in Dubvronik, this is evident by a document in which the Senate offered her and her children hospitality.

Unfortunately, her plans had to be annulled as the Hungarians advanced their conquest in the north of Serbia and the Ottomans to the south of it. Thus, her final decision was to stay, and sometime between November and December of that same year, she accepted vassalage to the Ottomans despite the reluctance of many Serbian lords, including her son-in-law, Vuk Branković (through Mara), a decision that would cost the Branković family their lands.

The vassalage included loyalty, taxes in the form of soldiers, and lastly, her youngest daughter, Olivera, to be the wife of the Sultan. All requirements were met, as by the spring of 1390, her daughter was married to the Sultan.

Milica continued to rule over Serbia for three more years, until her eldest son Stefan reached adulthood in 1393. That year, she became a nun under the name "Eugenia," yet she continued to advise her son behind the scenes, as evidenced by her diplomatic mission with her cousin and lady-courtier, Jefimija, to Sultan Bayezid in the spring of 1398 when he suspected Stefan of treason.

The issue was soon resolved, and Stefan was forgiven.

Her Motherly Sorrows Though things seemed to be going quietly from 1398 onward, the peace came to an end in 1402, following the Battle of Ankara.

While her beloved son, Stefan, was able to elevate himself to the title of Despot in Constantinople, her son Vuk, wishing for more territory to rule over, revolted against his brother. Additionally, her daughter Olivera and her granddaughters fell into Timurid captivity.

Milica’s daughter Mara, along with her respective children, developed a vendetta against the Lazarević family, whom they blamed for Vuk Branković’s death.

All these stresses likely prompted her to write her poem “To My Widow, O Bridegroom,” dedicated to her husband, Lazar, in 1402. Amid all the motherly worries and family vendettas, it seems that the memory of her deceased husband was what she found comfort in.

Later Life

When the Ottoman civil war broke out between Bayezid’s sons, Vuk and Stefan found themselves on opposite sides of the conflict, supporting different Ottoman rulers.

Milica was able to reconcile her sons; however, after her death, their bloody feud reappeared.

Milica passed away on November 11, 1405, at the age of seventy and was laid to rest in the Ljubostinja Monastery.

Perhaps in her final days, she was at ease since her daughter Olivera was released, and her sons “ended” their vendetta. However, it seems, based on what happened soon after her death, that they only did so for the sake of their mother.

Legacy

Milica has left her mark on Serbian history, being declared a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Today, many statues, church venerations, and streets are named after her.

Entry 6

Robinson et al. (2016) found in their study that there is a “positive correlation between students’ perceived success of an internship and their future career choices” (p. 516). 

Thanks to this internship, my career aspirations have changed a little bit from what they have been for most of my time doing the course. 

Throughout pretty much the whole time I have done this course, I have always been interested in and wanted to work mostly in the journalism side of Sports Media. Whenever someone asked me what I wanted to when I finish the course of what area of sports media I was interested in working in, I would say that I was mostly just interested in the journalism side “unless I find another area I’m interested in before I finish the course”. I said this for essentially my whole time completing this course, and thought that that’s what I would pursue once I finished. 

That was of course, until I started the Graphic Design internship at SEN. 

As mentioned in entry 1, at first I was interested in the writing internship, but also put my name down for graphic design, which is the internship I was offered. I am very thankful to have received that internship, because it has now allowed me to broaden my horizons and career aspects and aspirations. 

After completing the graphic design internship, I’m now quite interested in pursuing a career in that area as well. I still enjoy writing and would also like to do a bit of that too. However, this whole experience has sort of opened up a new world for me and given me multiple options for the future. 

Chobphon (2022) stated that, as universities give students hands on experience to prepare students for their future, the students must have clear career goals.

In terms of goals, for the moment, I still have one semester of my studies to complete, so my number one goal heading into that is to successfully pass all of my subjects. I also have a few mini goals I would like to complete along the way. 

For a more long-term, career based goal, ideally, I’d love to work, anywhere within the sports media industry, my ideal job or dream job would be doing it at an AFL club, though anywhere within the sports media industry doing graphics and a bit of writing as well is something I would love to do as a career.

Retard

In typical usage, retard is a pejorative term either for someone with an actual mental disability, or for someone who is considered stupid, slow to understand, or ineffective in some way as a comparison to stereotypical traits perceived in those with mental disabilities. The adjective retarded is used in the same way, for something very foolish or stupid. The word is sometimes censored and referred to as the euphemistic "r‑word" or "r‑slur".

Retard was previously used as a medical term. The verb "to retard" means 'to delay or hold back', and so "retard" became known as a medical term in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to describe children with intellectual disabilities, or retarded mental development. For context, until the 1960s, the terms moron, idiot, cretin, and imbecile were all genuine, non-offensive terms used, including by psychiatrists, to refer to people with mental intellectual disabilities and low intelligence. These words were discontinued in that form when concerns arose that they had developed negative meanings, with "retard" and "retarded" replacing them. After that, the terms "handicapped" (United States) and "disabled" (United Kingdom) replaced "retard" and "retarded". Disabled is now considered a more polite term than handicapped in the United States as well. This trend was dubbed a "euphemism treadmill" by Steven Pinker.

Etymology

The word retard dates as far back as 1426. It stems from the Latin verb retardare, meaning 'to hinder' or 'make slow'. The English language, along with other European ones, adopted the word and used it as similar meaning, slow and delayed. In English, the word "to decelerate" would become a more common term than "to retard", while in others like French or Catalan, retard is still in common usage to mean 'delay' (tard).

Modern use

Retard has transitioned from an impartial term to one that is negatively loaded. For this reason, the term is now widely considered as degrading even when used in its original context.

Instead, people use the term when teasing their friends or as a general insult.

Legislation in the United States

Despite not typically being used in official context, "mental retardation" was still written in many of the United States' laws and documents until October 5, 2010, when U.S. President Barack Obama signed into effect S. 2781, also known as Rosa's Law. The bill changed references in federal law; the term mental retardation was replaced by mental disability. Additionally, the phrase "mentally retarded individual" was replaced with "an individual with an intellectual disability". Rosa's Law was named after Rosa Marcellino, a nine-year-old girl with Down syndrome. She worked with her parents to have the words "mentally retarded" officially removed from health and education code in Maryland, her home state.[15] With this new law, "mental retardation" and "mentally retarded" no longer exist in federal health or education and labor policy. The rights of individuals with disabilities would remain the same.[13] The goal of this change in phrasing was to remove language that may be considered derogatory to communities.

Yoder and Sen. J.D. Ford, D-Indianapolis, were the sole votes against advancing the bill to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Yoder, who cannot use hormonal birth control herself because of medical issues, said all forms of contraceptives should be offered to Indiana Medicaid patients. “I am very concerned that Right to Life has been effective in messaging a lie about IUDs,” Yoder said.

Social Media Conflict - Week 10

Over the past few years the term ‘snowflake generation’ has risen in popularity with some believing that “the younger generation are far more sensitive” than those of the past (McEwan, 2022). The younger generation are perceived to be easily offended and more intolerant (Haslop, O’Rourke & Sothern 2021, p. 1418). This could be due to them being immersed in digitised spaces leading them to become mentally fragile (Haslop, O’Rourke & Sothern 2021, p. 1419). I disagree that the younger generation have become more fragile, I believe they have a wider perspective and greater understanding of the world around them in comparison to generations past leading them to be more considerate.

Harassment online is considered “threats or other offensive unwanted behaviours targeted directly at others through new technology channels” (Jones, Mitchelle & Finkelhor 2013, p. 54). This means harassment through social media platforms, messages, online forums and more. When university students in the UK were surveyed it was discovered that women are more likely to be targets of gender harassment than men (Haslop, O’Rourke & Sothern 2021, p. 1420). Some students succumb to harassment online so often they didn’t realise it was considered harassment. This was the case of females receiving unwanted sexual advances such as receiving unwanted images from men featuring nudity (Haslop, O’Rourke & Sothern 2021, p. 1426). The younger generation have built a thicker skin through overcoming harassment and seeing opinions that differ from their own.

Through social media the use of gaslighting has become prevalent with there being constant sources of fake news, trolls, theories and more. Gaslighting is the “psychological manipulation of a person in order to erode their sense of self and sanity” (Gleeson, 2018). Gaslighting can be used to question a persons sanity, an example of this would be someone saying another person “misread a situation,” this could be true when a person receives an unsolicited explicit picture that they did not ask for (Gleeson, 2018). 

Harassment can come in many forms across social media with the younger generation developing a certain level of tolerance to offensive, harassing and abusive communications online (Haslop, O’Rourke & Sothern 2021, p. 1431). The younger generation have grown up understanding the world around them due to the easy access of social media allowing them be more considerate of other people's opinions.
