10 YEARS OF GW2 – A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

Hello peeps! As a little countdown to GW2's launch anniversary on August 28 I decided to dig up some old memories and take a small look at my personal journey through the game. Each day I'll make a post about another year.

DAY 4: 2015

Oh boy, 2015. A lot happened that year. The whole 2015/2016 era is incredibly nostalgic for me, so let's dive right in.

Coming back from my year long hiatus, I felt like having a new start. You know when you play an RPG that you don't touch for months and you think "might as well start over". I sat down and made another ranger.

And so my little walnut Iekko (it's an i not an L inside joke) was created. He became my new main and continues to be the main to this day! My girlfriend decided to play through the story with me on her Sylvari mesmer Maëliss (also known as Shroomie), and so this dream-team commander duo was born. We've played every* story release together on these two since. *except for long live the lich which i somehow didn't play until last year. and then i didn't even play it on the main.

We went through the entirety of the personal story all the way to the end for the very first time... that included Arah, which back then still was a group instance. We really, really tried to beat it on our own.

Didn't go so well. We ended up partying up with some strangers (our LFG looked kinda like "noobs looking for party to finish story") and finally defeated Zhaitan. We dove right into LS2 afterwards which was incredible to play through on a Sylvari commander team, and anticipated the teased expansion (and according to my screenshot folder fought tequatl A LOT in the meantime).

That year's April Fool's day brought us the airplane mode:

I remember people were mad about it. I thought it was funny. Both the airplane mode, and the fact that it made people mad. Also I had come back to Lion's Arch being in shambles and I had no idea why. Just kept falling through all the holes in the bridges constantly.

Also, in memory of 2013: The return of the cliff.

Unfortunately I don't have a screenshot to go with it, but my main's nickname Bobbie also had its roots that year. Did some pvp for the first time (terribly stressing. I am not a fan of pvp game modes. But I really wanted that dredge dungeon armour and somehow doing dungeons or doing wvw sounded even more terrifying to me. Don't understand that in retrospect but fine.) and at some point in Temple of the Silent Storm one person of the enemy team dies. I'm not even sure anymore if I was responsible for their death at all, I just happened to fall down the same hole in the same time (I generally 100% don't know what the hell I am doing in pvp), and next thing I see in say chat is "Lowbob hunter". Found it so funny that at first Lowbob became a nickname, which then evolved into just Bob and then to go better with Shroomie eventually became Bobbie some years later. Sometimes I wish I could find this random pvp person trying to insult me so I can properly thank them for giving my main a nickname that has lasted for years.

Later that year it happened... the Heart of Thorns beta. I mentioned this before, but can you imagine how excited I, someone who somehow thought it was a sensible thing to play a core tank heal ranger, was to find out about the druid specialization? Good times.

Somehow this is one of the few screenshots I have from the beta and I believe it's because I must have been really enthralled by the lamps around Jaka Itzel. HoT graphics and lighting (fortunately I had a new PC at that point) seemed out of this world in comparison to many core places. Otherwise I remember the beta for playing it on my girlfriend's old pc with effectively non-exaggerated 3 fps and comically stuttering sound. It truly was an experience.

Fastforward to halloween! We had a little dance party with one of the devs:

And you know what also happened on halloween in 2015? (takes a deep breath)

If you've been following me for longer than a hot minute you know this is Heart of Thorns stan account number one. I don't think I need to say much about the general experience I've had with this expansion, you all know how I feel about it. On that note, remember when gliding was limited to HoT maps only for the first months?

In any case, the player base quickly learned we'd have to adapt our playstyle to enemies that set the bar a little higher than core enemies.

Doing those Verdant Brink events for the first time after entering the map certainly was a bonding experience of the special kind.

This is the first screenshot I found that has chak in it. I don't remember the context for this. The way this is "framed" (if you want to call it that) makes me think I saw these little critters run by, slammed the screenshot button and went "the hell is this". Don't have any proof though. Just an assumption. I'll spare you more Tangled Depths talk, it'll happen sooner or later on this blog anyway if you want it or not.

Other than its beautiful maps (and great atmosphere. and amazing music. and-) HoT introduced two more things that would occupy me a lot throughout the end of 2015 and especially 2016 as well:

Welcome to my latest summary of recent news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & ecommerce! This covers articles I came across in the first part of October, although some may be older than that.

[I am out of town for nearly a week in late October, so don’t expect another update until the end of the month at the earliest.]

Just a reminder - you don’t need to read everything here! I try to organize the material by topic and provide a brief summary so that you can easily skip things you don’t need to read.

14 elements that will help your product pages get sales. Trust badges & reviews can really make a difference. Also, here’s a really simple explanation of how your descriptions should try to sell the product: “Bridge the gap between features and benefits: A feature is essentially a fact about your product or offer. The benefit mainly answers how a feature is useful for your customer. Tell them exactly “how” a particular feature is useful for them, and “why” they should make this purchase. Product descriptions that bridge the gap between features and benefits can lessen buyer’s guilt and ease the buying decision.”

It’s time for holiday season forecasts! Halloween spending is expected to be steady. While some are predicting up to a 4-5% increase in US November-December retail spending this year, others are worried about consumer debt. There is still “a stubborn wealth gap in the United States that appears to be once again worsening and in fact is "the biggest it’s ever been." The Gini index, a standard economic measure of income inequality, for the U.S. in 2018 was "significantly higher" than 2017, after widening steadily for the last 50 years, according to a Sept. 26 report from the U.S. Census Bureau.” Note that online retailers are finding that the holiday season is less crucial than it used to be, since people shop online all year now. “...the holiday season accounted for almost 24% of all retailers’ sales in the late 1990s, but is closer to 21% today.” Finally, “A late Thanksgiving this year, falling on Nov. 28, means there are six fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas than in 2018. In fact, 2019 is the shortest possible holiday calendar scenario”.[emphasis added by me]

Kansas state tax collection on online sales is in question after the lack of a minimum on revenue or orders is criticized. The dictate kicked in October 1st, requiring any business selling anything in the state to register, which didn’t exempt small businesses as other states have done. This is important - if they manage to apply this tax to even the smallest businesses, and win any court challenges, other states are likely to follow suit.

ETSY NEWS

Etsy released a new stats page last week, which like most things they do these days, isn’t finished yet. You can read the announcement here, and a more detailed explanation here, including a discussion of the conversion rate numbers now provided. [I don’t find those very useful on Etsy, as I find I get a lot of visits that are not from buyers, such as people checking out my SEO.] Also note that there will be a Q & A thread this week in the forum, starting October 14th at 10 am EDT.

When a listing is clicked from any search, there is now a link at the top saying “Back to search results” which only goes to page one of the search on Etsy, not the page you were on. It even does this when someone clicks on your item from a search of your shop.

They made some recent improvements to the buyer app, including integrating shop names into the regular search. No need to tag with your exact shop name! (Mobile & desktop search also work the same way; the app was the last hold out.)

More holiday marketing tips continue to roll out, including this one on merchandising. It includes a list of holidays at the end (although Canadian Thanksgiving was just 5 days away on the date of publication, so that seems to have been a waste of space). Potentially more useful to some of us is the transcript of the podcast on shopper behaviour during the holidays. [includes links to the podcast if you would rather listen] “9% of our buyers do the bulk of their shopping in late December right before the holidays” and “On Etsy specifically, searches around the holidays spike for gifts in conjunction with a descriptor of the recipient. We see searches like “gifts for grandma,” “gifts for boyfriend,” and “unique gift for a friend” spike.” Finally, “In terms of uniqueness, 90% of Etsy buyers would rather give a unique or one-of-a-kind gift.” They also cover some specific research on holiday shopping patterns in the UK & Germany, compared to the US.

There is a new help file on search called Beginner’s Guide to Etsy Search, and while it is up to date, I am not sure why it is needed, when they already have a page (they even link to it) called “How Etsy Search Works”, which isn’t as up to date. If they are planning on releasing new instructions, as they told me months ago, they are going about it really, really slowly.

Etsy Ireland lost money last year, apparently due to the DaWanda deal. “Etsy, whose mission is to “keep commerce human”, faced a wave of criticism from users after designating its business in Ireland as an unlimited liability company in 2015 so that it didn’t have to publicly disclose financial information about the unit. The company has, however, published annual accounts for the subsidiary for both 2017 and last year.”

Meanwhile, free shipping & Etsy Ads have produced quite a stock boost for the main company. “KeyBanc’s comments were echoed by Canaccord Genuity, which earlier this week wrote that the company’s initiatives were driving “robust growth and improving profitability.” Analyst Maria Ripps called free shipping “an important step in bringing Etsy’s platform closer to par” with other e-commerce leaders like Amazon.com Not only will free shipping improve “consumer perception around the platform,” but she estimated that it could add upside of 3%-5% upside to 2020 estimates for both revenue and adjusted Ebitda. The company’s Etsy Ads initiative, she added, “should ultimately attract high affinity customers with strong repeat purchase behavior.” Also, they noted that no major analysts no recommend selling the stock - most say “buy”, with a few saying “hold”.

Etsy partnered with Blackrock Emergency Savings Initiative to help US sellers deal with the financial pressures of self-employment.

SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES

Google’s advice on how to get your category pages to rank well is worth reading: among other things, you shouldn’t keyword stuff.

If you want your content to get the featured “0” position at the top of Google search, you should check out this article on featured snippets, or this Whiteboard Friday from Moz. [video & transcript]

More analysis of Google’s September core update shows that it may not have been as dramatic as the June update, but “your money, your life” (YMYL) sites still seem the most affected. SEMRush said the biggest winners were “DailyMail, eBackPage.com, lasd.org and marionschool.net. The biggest losers were TheFourMusic.com, Monks.org, BraidingClub.com, PascoLibraries.org and RoyalCaribbean.com.au.” Other case studies saw a lot of change in health and medical sites.

Another study states that websites still get most of their traffic from organic search.

If your own website isn’t ranking on Google, there are numerous fixable reasons, although some are more difficult than others.

Google says that HTML sitemaps aren’t necessary to good SEO.

If you are getting less organic traffic to your Patreon page recently, that could be because their SEO team accidentally de-indexed the entire site. It’s been fixed, but it could affect some pages for the next few weeks, if Google doesn’t recrawl you right away.

YouTube is the 4th most visited website, so improving your YouTube SEO can provide a huge boost in traffic.

CONTENT MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA (includes blogging & emails)

Facebook’s experiment on hiding like counts has rolled out in Australia. (Articles looks at the sociological studies behind this)

Instagram launched an account posting tips for “creators”, which the author notes does not focus on making money off of that content.

They have also expanded their Shopping part of the app, however, which is about making money.

And IG has released a Snapchat challenger called Threads, a standalone app run by Facebook. Techcrunch did a more detailed review & analysis. Right now, it doesn’t have any ads & they say they have no plans to add them.

Hubspot uses their own Snapchat account experience as a case study in how to make Snap work for business. (includes video & step-by-step instructions, if you are new to Snapchat.)

Twitter and Tweetdeck had a bad outage for several hours October 1-2, and it still isn't clear what happened.

If you use Twitter for your business, you should also be using Twitter lists. (I use Tweetdeck to organize mine.)

Now that it is working again, here are the best-performing hashtags on Twitter over the past few years.

ONLINE ADVERTISING (SEARCH ENGINES, SOCIAL MEDIA, & OTHERS)

Hubspot’s comprehensive guide to Google Ads is completely up to date for all new developments, and covers search ads as well as ads across Google’s network. [video and text]

They also put out a Facebook ad checklist, with video, text & screenshots.

And they also did a guide to YouTube advertising. [video and text]

Research and ad placement are key to getting better conversion from Facebook ads.

Gen Z (younger than millennials) don’t yet have full purchase strength as a cohort, but they influence buying in their households after seeing ads on Snapchat. Since Gen Z shows the least brand loyalty of any generation, it's necessary to reach them in new ways.

Shopify now has an integration with Microsoft Ads, which include all Verizon properties (Yahoo, AOL). More than 116 million Americans use Bing searches each month in some way.

LinkedIn has improved its ad tools, including audience forecasting.

Quora has improved ad targeting; they say they have over 300 million monthly users.

STATS, DATA, OTHER TRACKING

Advanced tips for site search in Google Analytics can get more out of the data than you thought was there.

Facebook will likely be paying out $40 million to settle a lawsuit for grossly overreporting video watching stats, including video ads.

Google Search Console is now reporting a lot fewer links for websites than in the past; it’s not clear if this is a bug or not.

The Console is now reporting on your videos.

ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS

If you use abandoned cart emails on your website, make sure they are optimized for conversions.

Ecommerce fraud rates are definitely increasing. “... digital goods have seen such an increase in fraud because they often have a streamlined purchase process that requires less information than other items.”

Google launched its new Shopping pages, which is not the same as Google Shopping but is connected to it, and allows buyers to check out on Google rather than retailer websites.

Amazon apparently surveyed Handmade sellers recently asking how they felt about Amazon Handmade.

Will Amazon face consequences in the US for its competitive activities? It’s looking more likely now. “Bloomberg reported in August that Amazon was dropping sellers' products in searches on its site if they priced a product cheaper on rival sites, behavior the news service noted could draw antitrust scrutiny.”

BUSINESS & CONSUMER STUDIES, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE

We all have difficult customers occasionally - here are 9 tips on how to deal with them.

While most web browsing happens on mobile, desktop users are still way more likely to buy. They also spend more than mobile buyers.

Gen Z members plan on doing most of their holiday shopping in physical shops this year (just like baby boomers), but many will do research online first. Also, “Forty-two percent of shoppers said that low prices are the top motivator for making purchases and 31% said free shipping was also a shopping incentive.”

Offering fewer options can lead to more sales. (The article has great suggestions on different ways to use this info.)

MISCELLANEOUS

Vimeo app Magisto is facing a class-action lawsuit over holding biometric data without the owners’ permission.

Haven’t heard much about the EU privacy law lately? It turns out that businesses that are GDPR-compliant are more successful than those that are not. The shocker is that only 28% of the companies surveyed were actually completely compliant, so this may be correlation and not causation. Also, the results were self-reported, so maybe not that accurate.

Here’s a decent list of free website builders, but I strongly suggest doing your own research on any that sound good, as the writeup isn’t very detailed. (The Etsy forum is a very good place for some of this research, as you can ask very specific questions of people who probably have similar needs to yours.)

Chrome is going to block embedded content that isn’t from an https site, beginning in December. [if your website isn’t yet https, get on that right away - it is going to become more & more crucial for being seen.]

1//3 Hiya, I need a bit of help. So, I can tell VM have deeper edges than PC most of the time but I don't understand the "floaty" quality most PC allude to when talking about their skating skills. I mean I can see their floatiness when I superficially see their programs but when I really focus on their feet I can see the shallow/flat edges, glitchy edge changes and sloppy exits from lifts. So, it leaves me wondering where their floatiness comes from. Is it because P wears flowy dresses and

2/3 lets her Hair down. Or because flatter edges helps give their skate that flowy look? Or do they really have better skating skills than VM. Like most people say VM have better skating skills than PC but TSL once said that one of the BESP guys thought PC had better SS. I guess, I wanna know IF PC does have better SS then what exact techniques make them better? So, I know what to look for. Cuz from zoomed in, slowmo gifs so far I feel like VM have better SS (deeper edges, smoother edge changes

3/3 good knee bend (tho my concept of knee bend isn’t fully clear). Sorry for the essay; tl;dr why do PC have superficial floatyness? Is it just a look or are they technically better? If so, what are those ‘techniques" they are doing better? Please answer if you’re able, I really wanna learn more on this.

floaty quality - i think it’s the overall feeling that is floaty, not the ss. and for the feeling the things you mention count - yes floaty dresses, hair down. they r young and “lightweight” - like if you look at vm’s Mahler, umbrellas or valse triste they r v floaty too. ofc the height difference helps pc cause he can throw gabi around and it looks “light” and floaty. but then if u look at their pre-2015 progs, none of that floaty quality is there - so packaging is v important - the right music and all the things you mentioned before. + speed - they really do get great speed now (which is a ss in itself but then i talked before about parallel movement in their progs). + choreography - v precise arm movements

and the ‘changes in levels’ - reacting to every note in music (now this is when u know im not a native speaker cause i cant explain this in english lol - basically the knee bend but also the core movement - their high-to-low movement is v accentuated, especially gui’s). those ‘changes in levels’ r v precise tho, like inhale-exhale movement, and at the same time they allow their movements to breathe, pause in every position for a moment (watch zagitova for some contrast lol).

and they (gui esp) use their whole body for that - shoulders, head, and knees. so with that up and down movement the whole program has a constant wavy flow. i think that what makes them have the ~airy quality.

re ss - lol no pc’s are not better than vm’s, it was probably mark hanretty stanning pc as per usual - it’s the equivalent of asking jonathan beyer to weigh in on the two teams’ skating skills lmao. they do have good ss tho contrary to popular opinion here. gabi has issues with extending her free leg and her knee bend is not as good as tessa’s but they’ve been getting their levels - yes gabi occasionally catches a flat edge but should i post a screenshot of t’s choctaw edge at the olys ie (i don’t want to tho so i won’t lol). the real strength of pc is gui ofc, he is a superb skater and has amazing balletic qualities, his extensions are always precise (scott’s are too but gui’s long limbs make it more noticeable) but mostly his control of his core paired with flexibility and his knee bend - he always uses his whole body.

For the 2015 holiday season, another update replaced mutator matches with an ice hockey-inspired mode (called «Snow Day»), played on an ice rink and the ball replaced with a hockey puck with different physics. Positive reception to the ice hockey mode led to it being extended for a few weeks after the holiday season. Psyonix had previously developed Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars in 2008 for the PlayStation 3. That title itself bore out from previous modifications that Psyonix' founder, Dave Hagewood, had done for Unreal Tournament 2003 by expanding out vehicle-based gameplay that Epic Games had already set in place in the engine into a new game mode called Onslaught. For this, Hagewood was hired as a contractor by Epic for Unreal Tournament 2004 specifically for incorporating the Onslaught mode as an official part of the game. Hagewood used his experience at Epic to found Psyonix, where among other contract projects they worked to try to find a way to make racing the Unreal vehicles in a physics-based engine enjoyable. They had toyed with several options such as race modes or mazes, but found that when they added a ball to the arena to be pushed by the vehicles, they had hit upon the right formula, which would become Battle-Cars. Further to the success was the addition of the rocket-powered cars; this originally was to be a simple speed boost, but with the physics engine, they were able to have the vehicles fly off and around the arena, furthering the possibilities for gameplay.

As Psyonix finished development of Battle-Cars, the studio had tried to gain access to a publisher by selling their game as «soccer, but with rocket-powered cars», but found none of the publishers seemed interested. Ultimately, they opted to self-publish the title on the PlayStation Network with almost no marketing. Though the title was downloaded more than two million times, it was not considered very successful even after the studio cut the price. The studio continued on to other projects, though kept the idea of building on Battle-Cars as an option, recognizing the game had a small but dedicated fan-base that provided them with ideas for expansion. These other projects, which including contract work for AAA titles, including Mass Effect 3 and Gears of War, helped to fund the development of Rocket League.

Full development of Rocket League started around 2013 and took around two years and under $2 million to develop, though they had tested various prototypes of a Battle-Cars sequel in the years prior, including an unsuccessful attempt at pitching the game's idea to Electronic Arts in 2011. Psyonix used some of the feedback from Battle-Cars to fine-tune the gameplay in Rocket League. A key requirement for Psyonix was to increase the game's frame rate from 30 to 60 frames-per-second, a known criticism from Battle-Cars and essential for newer hardware, according to Corey Davis, the design director at Psyonix. Hagewood recognized that Battle-Cars was considered «too hardcore», and eased up on some aspects to make it more approachable, such as by slowing the pace of the game. Though they tried to add elements like power-ups, they found these to be too distracting to gameplay. They also explored other changes such as making the game more gritty, akin to Monday Night Combat, developing several mini-games related to handling of the car, working on making the graphics give a sense of scale to the players to give the impression they were controlling full-sized vehicles rather than radio-controlled cars, and creating an open world structure where the player would drive between stadium and stadium to participate in matches. But back to what interests us here: we have listed and analyzed all the new features that we can expect in this edition of the OS. A NEW START MENU ON THE AGENDA

Skype wouldn't go away completely, since it would still be possible to install it through the Microsoft Store or as an x86 app. But that would be a major change for this software that Microsoft acquired ten years ago and has always pushed to the fore, not hesitating to abandon MSN, its old messaging system.

WINDOWS 11 WOULD BE FASTER THAN WINDOWS 10

According to the first benchmarks, Windows 11 is already faster than Windows 10 and should see its performance improve with the updates. Obviously, for the moment, these results should be taken with all the necessary precautions, since the new version of the operating system has not been finalized.

Nevertheless, if we are to believe the first tests carried out using software like Geekbench 5 or Cinebech R23, Windows 11 would be 2 to 8% faster than its predecessor . A figure which can reach 10% when we test the capabilities of the OS using the Chrome 91 browser. Microsoft would therefore have succeeded in optimizing its OS, without fundamentally changing the core. Note that the tests were performed on a Lakefield Core i7-L16G7 processor. From our side, we are waiting for the next generation of CPU and a definitive edition of Windows 11 to issue a final opinion on their relevance.

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF WINDOWS 11 THAT ARE STILL MISSING?

At the moment, the version of Windows 11 that Microsoft is working on is not yet finalized. The publisher has mainly relied on an “aesthetic” update of the OS, but new, deeper features should also emerge. For example, we are talking about full support for Android applications , without going through a third-party emulator like BlueStacks.

Another expected novelty of Windows 11: upon installation, Windows 11 offers you to “personalize your device” according to your uses (games, multimedia, creativity, work, etc.). If this function is present in the current beta of the OS, its effects are not visible for the moment. Again, we will have to wait for Microsoft to make an official presentation to find out more.

WHEN IS WINDOWS 11 RELEASED?

The new version of Windows 11 will be released in its final edition in 2021, that's for sure. The current version that has leaked seems finalized, or almost. Granted, it's still a bit early to judge, but we haven't encountered any major bugs with it. It may well be that Microsoft will release a finalized build during the summer. And that the most impatient rest assured: the Redmond giant obviously wants to broadcast a preview at the end of the conference on June 24, 2021 .

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF WINDOWS 11 AVAILABLE?

It is almost certain that Microsoft will apply its usual version program to Windows 11: home, professional and professional edition for work groups. This is also what the possibilities of installing Windows 11 from a USB key on a blank hard drive suggest.

On closer inspection, it also appears that Microsoft is planning to release an “SE” version of Windows 11. The difference with other versions of the OS? At first glance, nothing differentiates it from the classic version of the OS, except that it does not allow you to use Windows 11 locally. As a result, this may be an edition for online use only. We would therefore have to do with a version of Windows 11 developed for the Cloud, similar to what we find on the side of Google with Chrome OS.

WINDOWS 10 GOING TO DISAPPEAR?

Launched in 2015, Windows 10 could bow out after 10 years of existence.

Here again, it is still a little early to judge the future of Windows 10 as long as no official announcement has been made. On the other hand, if we stick to Microsoft's usual policy regarding new versions of Windows, Windows 10 is not going to go away anytime soon. Unless there is a final turnaround, the OS still has many long and beautiful years ahead of it. Windows XP for example has been maintained for almost 13 years, while Windows 7 has lasted for 11 years. Even the much-maligned Vista will have lived almost 11 years too.

Windows 10 arrived in its 6 th year, it is clear that its life cycle is not going to end anytime soon and he still has a few years to live, if that via updates security. This is what the operating system's software support page suggests. Microsoft is indeed talking about a deadline of October 14, 2025 for Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Professional, Windows 10 Professional Education and Windows 10 Professional for Workstations.

HOW MUCH WILL WINDOWS 11 COST?

When Windows 10 was released in 2015, Microsoft “offered” all Windows 7 and Windows 8 users a license for its new operating system. This offer was only supposed to last for a year, but six later it is still active. We can reasonably hope that the editor of Redmond will repeat the operation with Windows 11: any holder of a license of Windows 7, 8.1, or Windows 10 should be entitled to a free migration to Windows 11.

We tested the operation which consists in using a serial number sometimes coming from Windows 7, sometimes from Windows 10. The registration of the license worked perfectly. As for the newcomers, they will probably have to put their hands in their pockets, knowing that at present, a full Windows 10 license costs between 145 and 259 euros depending on the version . It is likely that a Windows 11 license will show up at similar prices.

Finally, the last avenue to consider: the acquisition of a Windows subscription. A formula that would take on its full meaning with a Windows in the Cloud, the release of which also seems imminent. Recall that Microsoft already offers Office 365 in this format since 2011. If Windows 11 were to be declined in a remote version on the Cloud, it could well be that Microsoft launches such an offer.

A pivot from tech to empowerment at bra startup ThirdLove

How a woke brand is made.

Convincing 100 women to show up at a warehouse and take photos of their chests is no easy feat. Convincing them through a Craigslist ad is nearly impossible. But that’s what lingerie company ThirdLove did in 2013 while developing a proprietary app that was designed to predict better bra sizes.

“The app was problematic, to say the least,” said a former engineer we’ll call Ben. “It basically only worked if the photos were good.” When people tried out the at-home instructions exactly — take two pictures in front of a full-length mirror in good lighting while wearing a tight tank top, making sure the phone is at waist-height — the results were reliably accurate. But getting people to do that was difficult.

“The app was problematic, to say the least”

Then there was the matter of data security. Co-CEO David Spector told Inc the company never “recorded” people’s images, but no one was clear on what that meant. Once the photos were submitted via the app, where did they go?

After securing $8 million in funding, ThirdLove stopped developing the app. The technology was complicated, the data difficult to get right. In its wake, the founders doubled down on a narrative that would help set them apart in the competitive but old-school lingerie market: diversity and female empowerment.

To co-CEO Heidi Zak, these tenets had been there all along. “We set out to build a brand for all women of all sizes,” she told Vox. “Look at what we’ve done in the past year or two” — the company has featured diverse models in almost all of its recent marketing campaigns — “We wouldn’t do all these things if that wasn’t core to who we are.”

Many employees aren’t buying it. “It’s all about the money,” said a member of the marketing team we’ll call Liz. Interviews with 10 current and former employees, all of whom asked to remain anonymous, paint a picture of ThirdLove’s transformation, from a data-driven bra brand to a bastion of diversity and inclusion, as one of keen opportunism. The gap between their viewpoint and the founders’ suggests that while the company has succeeded in pushing the lingerie industry to be more inclusive on multiple fronts, it has a long way to go to convince the workers who helped build the brand of its motives.

David Spector and Heidi Zak founded ThirdLove (then called MeCommerce) in 2012 to improve the bra shopping experience. Both came from big tech backgrounds — Zak worked at Google, Spector at the investment firm Sequoia Capital. Early documents list Spector as the CEO and Zak as the president, although today, they co-lead the company and ThirdLove is touted as “female-run.” Their first hire, Ra’el Cohen, continues to head up the design team.

The initial concept was to use computer vision technology to predict more accurate bra sizes. People took photos of themselves using ThirdLove’s proprietary app; computer vision technology then processed the images, and suggested a personalized fit.

To alleviate privacy concerns, Spector was careful to highlight the company’s data sharing policy in interviews, noting privacy was of the “utmost importance” and leading reporters to say the images were “processed without ever being recorded by ThirdLove.”

This was 2013, so a computer vision underwear app was revolutionary. “Want a bra that fits perfect? This billionaire-backed app helps with just your iPhone,” wrote Forbes. “How a NASA scientist helped size my bra,” added Fast Company.

ThirdLove did have a scientist helping them develop the technology. Ara Nefian, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon who contracted at NASA, worked on the apps and nights and weekends, and even he said the technology presented difficulties. “It relied heavily on accurately following the directions and that was a bit complicated,” he explained.

Regardless of the complications, when a woman we’ll call Natalie joined the company in 2014, she was immediately blown away by the technology. “The story was that the app could size you better than a sales rep in a store, which seemed pretty innovative,” she said. “I was really excited about the idea of working at a startup.”

Unlike many of ThirdLove’s recent employees who thought they were joining a female-led company and felt blindsided when they realized Spector’s involvement, Natalie joined for the technology, not the feminist credentials.

Three months into her tenure, however, she was told they were abandoning the app. Computer vision “was just a buzzword,” she realized, even though the tech stayed on the App Store. When she began to ask questions (How would they know people’s sizes? What was going to happen to all the data?), she was told not to worry — the company had stopped using data from the photos anyway.

The reality was slightly more complicated. By late 2014, Nefian had stopped working on the app, and the technology quickly went defunct. It had been finicky when he was involved. Without him, it was almost unusable.

Privacy was also a concern. Women were writing in asking where their photos were going, especially since some had included their faces in the pictures. Employees didn’t know how to respond, but it was clear the app was “freaking people out,” Ben said. Were the photos stored by ThirdLove? The employees themselves still aren’t sure today; the company vehemently denies the photos “were ever stored on any kind of server of any kind,” or even on a “camera roll.”

Nevertheless, ThirdLove began asking users questions about people’s current bra size and fit to get a more reliable read. It was a method that ultimately led to the fit finder quiz they now use.

By the end of 2015, the computer vision project had been more or less scrapped, and the media story around ThirdLove began to change. Over the next few years, they became the brand that actually understood breast shape. The company that called out Calvin Klein for sexist ads. The founders that fought for LGBT rights. They called themselves the “antithesis of Victoria’s Secret” and championed inclusivity in terms of both skin tone and size. It was a narrative that would ultimately stick.

ThirdLove’s 2014 marketing bears little resemblance to that of the company people know and love today. Their initial brand persona — the fictional customer they designed their products for — was a heterosexual white woman in her mid-thirties living in Brooklyn, according to three former employees. “She’d meet her co-workers at rooftop bars for drinks after work. It was like Sex and the City,” Liz said. “That’s how ThirdLove started — it wasn’t about being inclusive.”

These employees also recall getting pushback when they tried to use diverse models. “We liked to feature models of color in emails and on the homepage, and they [Spector and Cohen] would just ask us to change them. Sometimes they would say it was because white models sell better,” Liz said.

Four recent employees echoed these claims, saying they have had to reshoot entire campaigns — including one titled “to each her own” that celebrated women’s uniqueness — because there were “too many” models of color. “You’d hear comments from Ra’el Cohen that a model of color ‘looked tough’ or that ‘she looks like she’s going to slap a b,’” a member of the marketing team told us. Zak, who said she has been at every photoshoot produced by the brand, said this was untrue.

Tensions around race and identity are still running high inside ThirdLove. Last month, leaked audio obtained by Vox revealed Zak apologized at a company meeting after she and Spector appeared in traditional Mongolian wedding garb on Halloween, offending employees. “As a few of you know, Dave and I were so fortunate this summer to go to Mongolia,” she explained. “We really just wanted to highlight something we felt was really beautiful.” She then asked people to “assume positive intent,” and moved on.

Other aspects of the brand have evolved, employees say. While Natalie remembers Cohen originally not being enthusiastic about offering larger bra sizes — saying “we will never be a plus-size company” on multiple occasions, when asked why ThirdLove didn’t carry larger bra sizes — more recent employees say she has become a strong advocate for bigger bodies. The company now carries over 80 sizes — far more than the typical bra brand — and Zak attributes this in large part to Cohen.

Undisputed is the fact that Spector championed this change. “This is where Dave can be a fascinating human,” Natalie said. While many employees report feeling bullied by his behavior, when he was on their side in an argument, his intensity could be an asset. “Like, he only wanted us to have hot models on our website but then he could be such a pitbull like, ‘This is low-hanging fruit. We have all these women who want this size, we should start carrying it. When are we going to start?’”

This pitbull quality also came out in less than ideal ways. In 2015, when the company launched a free trial program to allow customers to try on bras at home and send them back if they didn’t like the fit, he realized people’s credit cards were getting declined. Some were simply expired, but if customers kept the product, the company didn’t have a good way to recoup the funds, regardless if it was negligence or fraud.

Three employees remember Spector emailing people under a fake name in order to recover the money, claiming that if they didn’t pay up, the company would report them to an agency of online retailers. (No such agency exists.) “If you got too many strikes, you wouldn’t be able to shop online,” Emily recalls Spector telling customers. “It was my first job and I was like, this isn’t normal, right?” In response to this claim, ThirdLove said, “This is a twisted allegation trying to paint something negative which is simply normal business practice.”

Perhaps the company was suffering from the same difficulties as many early-stage startups: things were moving fast, people said things off the cuff, and the founders were zealous in their drive. But employee perception suggests the founders didn’t always take the time to bring the organization’s mission to life inside the company walls, which led to a growing chasm between how executives and their staff saw the brand.

It was around this time that Scott Nathan, a fashion photographer in Los Angeles, was approached about shooting a campaign for a different underwear company, Naja, which had launched in 2014. Naja partnered with women in need to design “underwear with a purpose.” It was founded by the actress Gina Rodriguez and Stanford MBA Catalina Girald.

Naja’s new line was called “Nude for All,” and it boasted an array of bras and underwear for a wide variety of different skin tones. In the photoshoot, Nathan framed 10 “real” women — all with unique jobs and backstories — against a neutral background. The campaign launched in 2016 in subway stations in New York.

Nathan was proud of how the campaign turned out. The images were fresh and showcased Naja’s inclusive values.

A year later, ThirdLove came out with its new campaign, called “The New Naked.” “The industry-favorite brand is launching nude bras for ALL,” Refinery29 announced.

Fashion brands often borrow each other’s concepts and draw inspiration from one another. But to Nathan, ThirdLove’s images were too close to his own. “They completely jacked Naja’s campaign,” he opined. “They basically just copied the whole concept.”

Naja was hardly the first company to sell bras for different skin tones; still, ThirdLove employees felt the brand was jumping on a bandwagon in order to beat out a competitor. “It’s strange because originally it was really hard to get them to commit to an authentic image,” recalled Emily. “It was all very skinny neutral women — none of that girl power feeling they are preaching today.”

To ThirdLove’s early employees, watching the company transform from a tech-focused brand to an industry leader in female empowerment has been surreal. Many feel validated that the company now uses diverse models and offers a wide range of sizes, but the change also feels inauthentic. “They’re just opportunistic,” Liz said.

Zak remains steadfast in her belief that the narrative shared by these employees is wrong. “We’ve always been a brand that’s been for all women,” she said, “from the very beginning of the company.”

Patreon sells product curation site Kit to GeniusLink

Patreon, the platform for independent content creators to operate membership businesses for their core fans, announced it is selling the assets of Kit.com to localized affiliate link service GeniusLink.

Founded in 2015, Kit is a social-shopping platform where influencers curate bundles of products (“kits”) they recommend. When their fans buy products they featured in a kit, the influencer earns an affiliate fee commission. Kit has 2.3 million monthly web visitors, according to SimilarWeb.

Among the most notable content creators on Kit, YouTuber Casey Neistat curated a kit featuring his favorite camera gear and author Tim Ferriss curated kits featuring his favorite podcasting equipment and the health products recommended by interviewees in his Tools for Titans book.

Patreon acquired Kit in June 2018 in what Patreon’s SVP Product Wyatt Jenkins described to me during my in-depth series on the company as “close to an acqui-hire,” adding that “although Kit is a good revenue source for a lot of creators — so it’s not a shut-down of Kit — we’re maintaining it but not iterating on it.”

Patreon acquires Kit to let creators bundle merch in subscriptions

Kit had previously raised $2.5 million in venture capital from backers like Social Capital, #Angels, Precursor Ventures, Expa, and Ellen Pao. While the Kit site remained active, the team behind it was reassigned to lead product development for Patreon’s merch offering.

It is unsurprising that Patreon found a new home for the asset. While Kit is a tool for creators to monetize, it doesn’t enhance paid memberships for fans and that’s Patreon’s exclusive focus right now. Even Patreon’s merch product is only for offering merch as a benefit for membership tiers, not for managing an e-commerce store with one-time transactions.

In a blog post today announcing the acquisition, GeniusLink wrote that “The first order of business for Geniuslink is to migrate Kit to the Geniuslink infrastructure and work to improve speed and reliability while our operations team dives into user support. We look forward to adding additional functionality for creators to monetize their kits in the coming months.”

GeniusLink launched in 2009, originally branded as GeoRiot. The bootstrapped company has 13 employees headquartered in Seattle.

Social commerce is a popular trend right now, with other social platforms testing e-commerce integrations for users (particularly influencers) to feature products. YouTube now has a built-in merch section for a creator to sell products under their videos and Instagram lets influencers sell products directly in the app. These have the advantage of providing influencer-curated shopping experiences right where influencers and their fans already are.

Those features assume an influencer is selling their own products, however, or at least the products of a brand they’ve formally partnered with. For Kit and its affiliate link model, the focus is on influencers as trusted curators for their fans. The influencer can feature a much wider variety of products and do so immediately, without negotiating a deal with each brand.

That’s also why the model likely doesn’t make sense for many popular influencers — they want more money for their endorsement of a product than a standard affiliate link fee, and recommending lots of products they don’t have formal deals to promote may undercut them in their negotiations with brands.

As GeniusLink adds more monetization features to Kit, perhaps it will make it a more lucrative business activity for small and large influencers alike.
