The VMS Nationwide Market Overview report for the month of May 2018 shows that of the top ten used cars sold by Independent dealers in Ireland, the number one best selling car was the Ford Focus.

When it came to Franchise dealers, of the top-ten used cars sold, the number one spot went to the Hyundai Tucson with the Ford Focus coming in on the sixth position.

What is telling about these statistics is that all of the best selling cars in the Republic of Ireland from Independent and Franchise dealers are all diesel fuel cars. Interesting, considering the growing backlash to diesel fuel Internationally.

Another telling fact of the statistics is that of the quickest selling cars from both Independent and Franchise dealers, the top cars where petrol powered cars and not diesel. This fact probably suggests that consumers are snapping up petrol cars more quickly than they are diesel powered cars?

Triển lãm Ô tô Việt Nam 2019 tại TP.HCM đang diễn ra với sự xuất hiện của những mẫu xe đình đám. Ngoài những cái tên rất được mong chờ đến từ các hãng xe nổi tiếng như Audi, Lexus, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Subaru và Volkswagen, và sự xuất hiện lần đầu của hãng xe VinFast, VMS năm nay cũng chứng kiến khá nhiều mẫu xe gây bất ngờ cho giới truyền thông, điển hình là mẫu Toyota TJ Cruiser Concept với ngoại hình lạ mắt.

Toyota TJ Cruiser Concept trở lại tại VMS 2019

Thực chất, với giới thạo tin, mẫu xe vuông vức này cũng không có gì quá mới mẻ. Cách đây 2 năm, Toyota đã từng cho TJ Cruiser Concept trình làng tại Tokyo Motor Show 2017. Và trong vòng 2 năm qua, công nghệ kỹ thuật ô tô trên thế giới đã có nhiều bước phát triển vượt bậc, nhất là về công nghệ xe điện và xe tự lái. Nhưng tại Việt Nam, việc áp dụng các công nghệ mới này vẫn còn rất nhiều hạn chế, cả về nền tảng cơ sở hạ tầng liên quan.  Vậy nên, trong lần trở lại tại VMS 2019, người ta tự hỏi: không biết Toyota đang mang tới một đặc sản mới hay là “đồ ngu���i”?

Không bàn về lần ra mắt của Toyota TJ Cruiser Concept sẽ mang lại hiệu ứng như thế nào cho giới mộ điệu, nhưng rõ ràng mẫu xe “khối hộp” này đã khiến gian hàng của hãng xe lớn nhất nước Nhật sự mới lạ, độc đáo. Tj Cruiser Concept gây tò mò từ cái tên, trong đó “Tj” là chữ viết tắt của “Toolbox” (hộp dụng cụ) và “joy” (sự hào hứng), trong khi từ “Cruiser” đã gắn liền từ lâu với các dòng xe địa hình của Toyota.

Điểm độc đáo trên chiếc TJ Cruiser này là xe sở hữu kiểu dáng của dòng Van rộng rãi nhưng lại có khả năng vận hành như một mẫu SUV. TJ Cruiser sở hữu kích thước ngắn hơn người anh em C-HR, nhưng thiết kế dạng hộp giúp mẫu xe này tối ưu hóa không gian bên trong. Về cơ bản Toyota Tj Cruiser là sự hòa trộn giữa một chiếc xe van thương mại với SUV địa hình. Điều này thể hiện rõ qua thiết kế hình hộp lạ mắt của chiếc xe. TJ Cruiser giống như sự tập hợp của các bề mặt phẳng và góc cạnh vuông vức. Có ý kiến cho rằng, nhìn mẫu xe nhà Toyota, dễ liên tưởng đến những mẫu xe quân sự trong Thế chiến II.

Tj Cruiser được phủ lớp chống xước trên nắp ca-pô, mui và các vòm bánh. Chiếc xe cũng có bộ mâm 20 inch kèm lốp gai lớn phù hợp với “thân hình hộ pháp” của mình. Xe có hệ thống treo vững chắc, có khoảng hành trình lớn để dễ dàng vượt qua những địa hình xấu.

Về khoang nội thất, với vẻ ngoài vuông vức, chưa cần vào bên trong người ta có thể tưởng tượng ra mẫu xe khá thoải mái không gian cho người dùng. Thậm chí người lái và hành khách có thể dễ dàng bước vào cabin nhờ cửa trước rộng và cửa lùa phía sau. TJ Cruiser bản thương mại có thể sẽ có 5 hoặc 7 chỗ, thay vì 4 ghế như của bản concept. Hệ thống ghế có thể gập phẳng cho phép chở hàng có chiều dài lên tới 3m.

Nhiều khả năng TJ Cruiser vẫn sử dụng nền tảng TNGA quen thuộc của Toyota. Xe dự kiến có 3 tùy chọn hệ thống truyền động là động cơ xăng 2.0L, hybrid 1.8L và hybrid 2.5L, đi kèm hệ dẫn động cầu trước hoặc 4 bánh.

Mở cửa nhập xe giá rẻ, người Việt vẫn cam chịu mua ô tô giá đắt

Trên 90% xe nhập về Việt Nam dưới 500 triệu đồng

Lượng nhập xe vào Việt Nam trong tháng 10/2018 tăng rất mạnh so với tháng 9 và tăng đột biến so với tháng 10 năm trước, xe nhập chủ yếu là dòng giá rẻ nhưng về Việt Nam các loại xe này không hề được giảm giá.

Xe hơi nhập về Việt Nam ngày càng tập trung vào các dòng giá rẻ

Theo con số thống kê mới nhất của Tổng cục Hải quan, trong tháng 10, tổng lượng xe nhập về Việt Nam đạt con số cao kỷ lục hơn 14.200 chiếc, tăng gần 3.000 chiếc so với tháng trước.

Riêng xe con nhập khẩu tháng 10 đạt hơn 8.800 chiếc, tăng hơn 3.700 chiếc so với tháng trước.

Điều đáng quan tâm là lượng xe nhập về Việt Nam ngày càng tập trung vào xe giá rẻ. Theo giá trị nhập khẩu/lượng xe nhập về Việt Nam, giá xe nhập trong tháng 10/2018 là 471 triệu đồng/chiếc, rẻ hơn 13 triệu đồng/chiếc so với giá xe nhập bình quân trong tháng 9. Đặc biệt, xe nhập trong tháng 10/2018 rẻ hơn 119 triệu đồng/chiếc so với giá nhập xe bình quân tháng 10/2017.

Riêng xe con, giá xe nhập bình quân trong tháng 10/2018 là hơn 445 triệu đồng/chiếc, rẻ hơn 46 triệu đồng/chiếc so với giá bình quân trong tháng 9/2018; đặc biệt rẻ hơn 385 triệu đồng so với giá bình quân xe con nhập khẩu tháng 10/2017.

Với giá trung bình nói trên, có thể khẳng định giá xe nhập về Việt Nam hiện có sự phân hoá rất mạnh so với trước, chủ yếu tăng nhập về dòng xe con giá rẻ, các dòng xe giá đắt nhập từ các nước có thuế suất thuế nhập khẩu cao không còn về Việt Nam nhiều như trước đây.

Fortuner hưởng thuế 0% không giảm giá, Toyota nói gì?

Trả lời câu hỏi của báo giới về việc tại sao Toyota được hưởng thuế suất thuế nhập khẩu 0% từ năm 2018 đối với xe nhập khẩu từ Indonesia Fortuner nhưng giá dòng xe này không giảm, ông Shinjiro Kajikawa, Phó Giám đốc khối hoạch định Chiến lược Toyota Việt Nam khẳng định: Về giá khó phân tích, đây là do tính toán của doanh nghiệp.

Theo giải thích của đại diện Toyota Nhật Bản, liên quan tới giá xe hiện có nhiều yếu tố tác động nên, do đó giá xe trên thị trường do doanh nghiệp tính toán để quy định mức giá hợp lý.

Trả lời các câu hỏi của phóng viên về việc Việt Nam liên tục tham gia các Hiệp định thương mại tự do song và đa phương cùng với đó lộ trình bỏ thuế nhập khẩu xe hơi từ Trung Quốc, Nhật Bản hay EU đang ngày một đến gần, Toyota có kế hoạch nào, liệu có chuyển sản xuất, lắp ráp đẩy mạnh nhập khẩu?

Ông Shinjiro Kajikawa cho rằng, nguyên lý của Toyota xây dựng tập trung đáp ứng nhu cầu của khách hàng. Ông này cho biết, “không bao giờ tính đến việc thu nhỏ sản xuất và tập trung phát triển ở thị trường Việt Nam”.

Khi được hỏi về tiến trình nâng cao tỷ lệ nội địa hoá xe hơi sản xuất tại Việt Nam, vị đại diện của doanh nghiệp Nhật Bản không hé lộ thông tin và cho rằng: “Nội địa hoá có nhiều con số khác nhau, chúng tôi không thể công bố. Hiện chúng tôi muốn nâng cao tỷ lệ nội hoá thông qua việc đầu tư máy móc thiết bị”.

Trước câu hỏi thách thức của các nhà sản xuất, lắp ráp xe hơi tại Việt Nam như Hyundai Thành Công, Trường Hải hay gần đây nhất là VinFast đang chú trọng đầu tư công nghệ, xây dựng nhà máy lớn, dây truyền hiện đại để sản xuất xe tại Việt Nam, lãnh đạo Toyota Việt Nam nói: “Chúng tôi không biết VinFast hay Hyundai Thành Công làm cái gì cả, về nguyên tắc, chúng tôi luôn luôn nâng cao chất lượng sản phẩm để đáp ứng nhu cầu khách hàng”.

Bộ Công Thương và Toyota nói gì về ô tô Việt “chăm mãi không lớn”

Tại Hội thảo “Phát triển công nghiệp hỗ trợ ngành ô tô, tác động chính sách, rào cản và giải pháp” do Viện Nghiên cứu và Quản lý Kinh tế Trung ương (CIEM) tổ chức sáng 30/10, Bộ Công Thương và Toyota lên tiếng lý giải xe Việt bao năm hưởng ưu đãi nhưng không lớn được.

Xe lắp ráp trong nước của các hãng liên doanh không hề được nâng cao nội địa hoá

Báo cáo của Cục Công nghiệp, Bộ Công Thương chỉ rõ: “Đầu tư cho sản xuất linh kiện, ph�� tùng ô tô còn mang tính nhỏ lẻ, sản phẩm làm ra ít cả về chủng loại và sản lượng. Sức cạnh tranh quốc tế của công nghệ hỗ trợ (CNHT) ngành sản xuất, lắp ráp ô tô còn hạn chế, nhất là sản phẩm của doanh nghiệp nội địa”.

Ông Lương Đức Toàn, Cục Công Nghiệp (Bộ Công Thương), hiện phần lớn phụ tùng và linh kiện đều phải nhập khẩu. Năm 2014 nhập khẩu 2,2 tỷ USD; năm 2015 nhập khẩu 3 tỷ USD, năm 2016 nhập khẩu 3,5 tỷ USD và năm 2017 nhập khẩu 3,167 tỷ USD.

Trong khi đó, tỷ lệ mua phụ tùng trong nước tuỳ theo chủng loại xe và nhà sản xuất đạt 10-30% đối với xe du lịch; hơn 30% đối vơi xe tải và hơn 40% đối với xe buýt.

“Phụ tùng, linh kiện chủ yếu được sản xuất và nhập khẩu từ doanh nghiệp (DN) FDI, tỷ lệ đặt hàng phụ tùng linh kiện từ DN nội địa cung cấp rất thấp. Trong số các DN cung cấp hiện có, hơn 90% là DN FDI, chỉ có số ít DN trong nước có thể tham gia vào mạng lưới sản xuất lắp ráp ô tô”, ông Toàn nói.

Đại diện Toyota Việt Nam, thị trường Việt Nam có biến động và bất ổn về chính sách nên các nhà đầu tư do dự khi vào Việt Nam.

Thêm vào đó sản xuất thiết bị nội địa còn thấp, đơn cử, sản lượng của Toyota Việt Nam còn thấp hơn rất nhiều so với các nước khác trong khu vực ASEAN. Trong khi đó, hệ thống nhà cung cấp ở Việt Nam còn rất hạn chế nên 90% là nhập khẩu.

Cạnh tranh về chi phí sản xuất Việt Nam yếu nên chi phí sản xuất xe ở Việt Nam đang cao hơn xe nhập khẩu nguyên chiếc từ các nước ASEAN khoảng từ 10-20%.

Đại diện Toyota lại xin ưu đãi: “Sản lượng bất lợi là vấn đề có tính hệ thống nên các công ty sẽ gặp khó khăn khi phải giải quyết. Vì vậy, để mở rộng nội địa hoá, chúng tôi mong muốn Chính phủ sẽ cân nhắc các chính sách có hiệu quả để giảm chi phí đầu tư”.

Maybach 62S màu trắng mang biển kiểm soát Sài thành nhưng được Chủ tịch Trung Nguyên “phân công” định cư ngoài Bắc để tiện cho việc di chuyển của ông.

Khu vực chiếc Maybach 62S màu trắng hay đỗ là một bãi xe của khách sạn 5 sao nằm gần quận Tây Hồ, Hà Nội. Những hình ảnh ghi lại cho thấy, phần ngoại thất chiếc xe siêu sang này đóng bụi khá dày đặc. Điều đó cho thấy, có vẻ như đã lâu Chủ tịch Trung Nguyên không sử dụng chiếc Maybach 62S này.

Bên trong bãi xe mà chiếc Maybach 62S màu trắng đỗ tại đây còn có một chiếc xe siêu sang khác là Rolls-Royce Phantom, được cho là cũng thuộc sở hữu của ông Đặng Lê Nguyên Vũ. Chưa hết, đỗ phía bên phải chiếc Maybach 62S màu trắng là một chiếc Range Rover cũng của vị Chủ tịch Trung Nguyên.

Đây không phải lần hiếm hoi những chiếc xe siêu sang của địa gia Trung Nguyên bị bắt gặp với ngoại thất đóng bụi dày đặc. Có lẽ cũng dễ hiểu, bởi sở hữu quá nhiều xe nên vị đại gia này không thể đi hết được.

Bộ sưu tập xe của Chủ tịch của Trung Nguyên được cho có khoảng hơn 50 chiếc siêu xe và xe siêu sang. Theo giới thạo tin, bộ sưu tập siêu xe của ông Vũ chỉ đứng sau bộ sưu tập của vợ chồng đại gia Minh “nhựa” về độ hoành tráng tại Việt Nam. Dàn siêu xe của ông chủ cà phê Trung Nguyên đến từ nhiều thương hiệu nổi tiếng trên thế giới.

Giá bán cho mỗi chiếc Maybach 62S này không dưới 1 triệu USD (23 tỷ đồng).

133 xe BMW buôn lậu của Euro Auto bây giờ ra sao?

Lô xe gồm 133 chiếc ô tô BMW do Euro Auto làm thủ tục hải quan nhập khẩu về Nam tại Chi cục Hải quan cửa khẩu cảng Sài Gòn khu vực 3 ngày 21/11/2016, thuộc cảng VICT (TP. Hồ Chí Minh) đến nay đã gần 2 năm. Số xe này được Euro Auto làm giả giấy tờ để nhập khẩu.

Theo báo cáo của Bộ Tài chính, liên quan đến vụ buôn lậu xe BMW của Công ty CP ô tô u Châu (Euro Auto, doanh nghiệp nhập khẩu chính thức BMW ở Việt Nam trước năm 2018), hiện vẫn còn lô 133 chiếc ô tô BMW do doanh nghiệp này làm thủ tục hải quan nhập khẩu về Nam tại Chi cục Hải quan cửa khẩu cảng Sài Gòn khu vực 3 từ ngày 21/11/2016, thuộc cảng VICT (TP. Hồ Chí Minh).

Dồn dập xe mới ra mắt tháng 11

Tháng 11 ghi nhận sự góp mặt của nhiều mẫu xe mới trên thị trường, sau các màn ra mắt tại triển lãm chuyên ngành lớn nhất năm diễn ra ở TP.Hồ Chí Minh vào cuối tháng 10.

Số lượng xe nhập khẩu đang ngày càng đa dạng

Tháng 11 khởi đầu với hàng loạt mẫu xe mới vừa được ra mắt trong Triển lãm Ôtô Việt Nam cuối tháng 10 vừa qua (VMS 2018) tại TP. Hồ Chí Minh. Mùa bán hàng cuối năm chính thức bắt đầu với sự xuất hiện của hàng loạt cái tên mới ở cả phân khúc xe hạng sang lẫn xe bình dân; đáng chú ý có Audi A7/Q8, Jaguar E-Pace và cả Chevrolet Colorado Storm/ Trailblazer Perfect Black, Ford Ranger Raptor, Honda Jazz RS Mugen…

Phân khúc xe sang bắt đầu có sự chuyển mình, khi những lô xe đầu tiên đáp ứng quy định mới về kinh doanh nhập khẩu xe chính thức được thông quan.

Trong tháng 11 này, thị trường xe cao cấp đón nhận thêm các mẫu xe mới ra mắt như Audi Q8/A7, Jaguar E-Pace, Maserati Quattroporte GTS GrandLusso, Lexus RX350L, Volvo XC90 hybrid, Volkswagen Touareg (cho dù nhà phân phối mang về thăm dò thị trường nhưng cũng đã nhận tiền đặt cọc của khoảng 30 khách hàng)…

Volvo em Curitiba contrata 300 funcionários e eleva investimento em R$ 250 milhões

  Depois de ampliar suas vendas em quase 80% no ano passado, e de não ter crescido mais em razão da falta de capacidade produtiva, a fabricante de caminhões e ônibus Volvo anunciou nesta quarta-feira, 13, investimentos de R$ 250 milhões e contratação de 300 funcionários para ampliar a produção na fábrica de Curitiba (PR) neste ano.

O grupo tinha em andamento um plano de aporte de R$ 1 bilhão para o período de 2017 a 2019, mas decidiu antecipar o novo investimento. A maior parte do valor adicional será gasta em 2020, principalmente em novos produtos, informa o presidente da Volvo América Latina, Wilson Lirmann.

“Esse é um momento de otimismo com a recuperação da economia, melhora do nível de empregos e da confiança”, diz o executivo. “Muitos investimentos começam a ser destravados em vários tipos de negócios e precisamos acompanhar esse movimento”.

Segundo Lirmann, a empresa também voltou a operar com rentabilidade no ano passado, depois de dois anos seguidos de prejuízos e um de equilíbrio. Ele não revela montantes, mas ressalta que a matriz na Suécia espera que, de agora em diante, a subsidiária local gere o suficiente para bancar suas operações e investimentos.

Focada na produção de caminhões de grande porte – usados, por exemplo, nos setores de agronegócio e mineração -, a Volvo vendeu 10.642 unidades no ano passado nos segmentos classificados como pesados e semipesados, com capacidade de transportar mais de 16 toneladas de carga. O mercado total desses produtos cresceu 63%, somando 52,6 mil unidades.

Para este ano, a Volvo prevê nova alta de 30%, para cerca de 68 mil caminhões de todas as marcas, porcentual que a marca dever acompanhar.

Segundo Alcides Cavalcante, diretor comercial da montadora, no ano passado a fábrica estava “sem capacidade suficiente” para dar conta de toda a demanda, que ficou acima do esperado pelo setor. Somando as exportações para a América Latina, a fábrica paranaense produziu cerca de 15 mil caminhões.

Com as 300 contratações, que eleva para 3,7 mil o total de funcionários da fábrica, a Volvo vai ampliar o segundo turno de trabalho na linha de caminhões. No período da crise, o quadro total de trabalhadores foi reduzido a 2,8 mil pessoas. “Agora estamos retornando ao patamares do pré-crise”, diz Lirmann.

As vendas de ônibus urbanos e rodoviários da marca somaram 430 unidades, 26% a mais do que em 2017. O mercado total cresceu 28,3%, para 15 mil unidades, segundo dados da Associação Nacional dos Fabricantes de Veículos Automotores (Anfavea). O presidente da Volvo diz que espera ampliar neste ano o mercado do caminhão autônomo VM, que teve sete unidades vendidas no ano passado para o Grupo Usaçucar, de Maringá (PR), para uso na colheita da cana-de-açúcar.

“Temos mais interessados, mas ainda estamos negociando”, informa Lirmann. O veículo foi desenvolvido no Brasil com ajuda de técnicos da matriz e tem nível 3 de automação (se movimenta por conta própria, em um traçado, mas o condutor precisa estar ao volante para assumir o controle em situação de risco).

O grupo já dispõe de veículos totalmente autônomos (que se movem sem motoristas) operando em uma subterrâneas e de calcário na Suécia e na Noruega. Já os veículos 100% elétricos da marca estarão disponíveis na Europa a partir deste ano e, por enquanto, não há planos de introduzi-los no Brasil, afirma Lirmann.

A Volkswagen, do grupo Traton, já vende no País caminhões elétricos, mas de pequeno porte, que serão usados inicialmente no transporte de bebidas.

  Depois de ampliar suas vendas em quase 80% no ano passado, e de não ter crescido mais em razão da falta de capacidade produtiva, a fabricante de caminhões e ônibus Volvo anunciou nesta quarta-feira, 13, investimentos de R$ 250 milhões e contratação de 300 funcionários para ampliar a produção na fábrica de Curitiba (PR) neste ano.

O grupo tinha em andamento um plano de aporte de R$ 1 bilhão para o período de 2017 a 2019, mas decidiu antecipar o novo investimento. A maior parte do valor adicional será gasta em 2020, principalmente em novos produtos, informa o presidente da Volvo América Latina, Wilson Lirmann.

“Esse é um momento de otimismo com a recuperação da economia, melhora do nível de empregos e da confiança”, diz o executivo. “Muitos investimentos começam a ser destravados em vários tipos de negócios e precisamos acompanhar esse movimento”.

Segundo Lirmann, a empresa também voltou a operar com rentabilidade no ano passado, depois de dois anos seguidos de prejuízos e um de equilíbrio. Ele não revela montantes, mas ressalta que a matriz na Suécia espera que, de agora em diante, a subsidiária local gere o suficiente para bancar suas operações e investimentos.

Focada na produção de caminhões de grande porte – usados, por exemplo, nos setores de agronegócio e mineração -, a Volvo vendeu 10.642 unidades no ano passado nos segmentos classificados como pesados e semipesados, com capacidade de transportar mais de 16 toneladas de carga. O mercado total desses produtos cresceu 63%, somando 52,6 mil unidades.

Para este ano, a Volvo prevê nova alta de 30%, para cerca de 68 mil caminhões de todas as marcas, porcentual que a marca dever acompanhar.

Segundo Alcides Cavalcante, diretor comercial da montadora, no ano passado a fábrica estava “sem capacidade suficiente” para dar conta de toda a demanda, que ficou acima do esperado pelo setor. Somando as exportações para a América Latina, a fábrica paranaense produziu cerca de 15 mil caminhões.

Com as 300 contratações, que eleva para 3,7 mil o total de funcionários da fábrica, a Volvo vai ampliar o segundo turno de trabalho na linha de caminhões. No período da crise, o quadro total de trabalhadores foi reduzido a 2,8 mil pessoas. “Agora estamos retornando ao patamares do pré-crise”, diz Lirmann.

As vendas de ônibus urbanos e rodoviários da marca somaram 430 unidades, 26% a mais do que em 2017. O mercado total cresceu 28,3%, para 15 mil unidades, segundo dados da Associação Nacional dos Fabricantes de Veículos Automotores (Anfavea). Self-steering Volvo Truck set to Increase Brazil's Sugar-cane Harvest

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, June 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Volvo Trucks has developed a new self-steering truck that can become a significant productivity booster for Brazilian sugar-cane growers. The truck, which is used to transport newly harvested sugar-cane, is steered with great precision through the fields in order to avoid damaging the young plants that will form the following year's crop. At present, about four per cent of the crop is lost as young plants are run over and the soil is compacted by moving vehicles. This can translate into tens of thousands of US dollars in lost revenue per truck per season.

In Maringá, an hour's flight west of São Paulo, the Usina Santa Terezinha Group produces sugar and ethanol from its own sugar-cane crops. In the past growing season, the company's huge fields have served as a test area for a prototype vehicle from Volvo Trucks. The truck was developed to examine how automated driving can make it possible to avoid damage to soil and crops, thus boosting revenues. The potential for bigger harvests is significant - up to ten tonnes per hectare per year.

"With the help of Volvo Trucks' solution we can increase productivity, not just for one single crop but for the entire lifecycle of the sugar-cane plant, which lasts five to six years," explains Santa Terezinha's Finance and Procurement Director, Paulo Meneguetti.

At present, sugar-cane is brought in from the fields using harvesters and manually controlled trucks, which drive alongside each other at a low speed. When a truck is fully loaded and drives off to empty its load, the next one moves up next to the harvester and the procedure is repeated. The big challenge for the truck driver is to match the speed of the harvester and at the same time concentrate fully on driving in its tracks, so as not to trample the nearby plants that will become the following year's crop.

Volvo Trucks has solved the problem with a driver assistance system that automates steering. It ensures that the truck always maintains exactly the right course when it drives to, alongside and away from the harvester, so that the plants are not damaged by trampling. With the help of GPS receivers, the truck follows a coordinate-based map across the sugar-cane field. Two gyroscopes ensure that not only the front wheels but the entire vehicle is steered with great precision, to prevent the truck from veering more than 25 mm laterally from its set course. When loading, the driver can choose to regulate speed with the help of the vehicle's cruise control, or to accelerate and brake manually. Since the driver is released from the burden of the concentration-demanding and tiring high precision steering process, it is easier to remain focused and work in a more relaxed and safe way throughout the shift.

"With this solution we will soon be able to significantly increase the productivity of our customers in the sugar-cane industry. At the same time, we will improve their drivers' working conditions and safety. This in turn will make the job more appealing, and make it easier to recruit and maintain drivers," says Wilson Lirmann, President of Volvo Group Latin America.

This summer the research project will transition into the product development phase, with more vehicles being field-tested. After that, the solution can be expected to become commercially available in the foreseeable future. Already this year Volvo Trucks Brazil will offer its VM customers in the sugar cane industry an advanced GPS-based map-reading system that gives the driver far better scope for maintaining a predetermined course, even though actual steering will still be handled manually at this stage.

The self-steering truck being used for sugar-cane transport is one of Volvo Trucks' research and development projects for automated vehicles. Tests are currently under way on an autonomous truck for mining operations in the Kristineberg Mine in northern Sweden, and an autonomous refuse collection truck is being tested in Gothenburg, Sweden. The aim is to evaluate how systems with different degrees of automation can contribute to higher productivity, a better working environment, and improved safety.

Segundo Lirmann, a empresa também voltou a operar com rentabilidade no ano passado, depois de dois anos seguidos de prejuízos e um de equilíbrio. Ele não revela montantes, mas ressalta que a matriz na Suécia espera que, de agora em diante, a subsidiária local gere o suficiente para bancar suas operações e investimentos.

Focada na produção de caminhões de grande porte – usados, por exemplo, nos setores de agronegócio e mineração -, a Volvo vendeu 10.642 unidades no ano passado nos segmentos classificados como pesados e semipesados, com capacidade de transportar mais de 16 toneladas de carga. O mercado total desses produtos cresceu 63%, somando 52,6 mil unidades.

Para este ano, a Volvo prevê nova alta de 30%, para cerca de 68 mil caminhões de todas as marcas, porcentual que a marca dever acompanhar.

Segundo Alcides Cavalcante, diretor comercial da montadora, no ano passado a fábrica estava “sem capacidade suficiente” para dar conta de toda a demanda, que ficou acima do esperado pelo setor. Somando as exportações para a América Latina, a fábrica paranaense produziu cerca de 15 mil caminhões.

Com as 300 contratações, que eleva para 3,7 mil o total de funcionários da fábrica, a Volvo vai ampliar o segundo turno de trabalho na linha de caminhões. No período da crise, o quadro total de trabalhadores foi reduzido a 2,8 mil pessoas. “Agora estamos retornando ao patamares do pré-crise”, diz Lirmann.

As vendas de ônibus urbanos e rodoviários da marca somaram 430 unidades, 26% a mais do que em 2017. O mercado total cresceu 28,3%, para 15 mil unidades, segundo dados da Associação Nacional dos Fabricantes de Veículos Automotores (Anfavea). Incluindo os segmentos de semileves, leves e médios, foram vendidos no ano passado 75.987 caminhões, um crescimento de 46,3% em relação ao ano anterior, também segundo a Anfavea.

Autônomos

O presidente da Volvo diz que espera ampliar neste ano o mercado do caminhão autônomo VM, que teve sete unidades vendidas no ano passado para o Grupo Usaçucar, de Maringá (PR), para uso na colheita da cana-de-açúcar.

“Temos mais interessados, mas ainda estamos negociando”, informa Lirmann. O veículo foi desenvolvido no Brasil com ajuda de técnicos da matriz e tem nível 3 de automação (se movimenta por conta própria, em um traçado, mas o condutor precisa estar ao volante para assumir o controle em situação de risco).

O grupo já dispõe de veículos totalmente autônomos (que se movem sem motoristas) operando em uma subterrâneas e de calcário na Suécia e na Noruega. Já os veículos 100% elétricos da marca estarão disponíveis na Europa a partir deste ano e, por enquanto, não há planos de introduzi-los no Brasil, afirma Lirmann.

A Volkswagen, do grupo Traton, já vende no País caminhões elétricos, mas de pequeno porte, que serão usados inicialmente no transporte de bebidas.
