Cuts made by the Trump administration are threatening the function of a tiny but crucial office within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that maintains the USâs framework of spatial information: latitudes, longitudes, vertical measurements like elevation, and even measurements of Earthâs gravitational field.
Staff losses at the National Geodetic Survey (NGS), the oldest scientific agency in the US, could further cripple its mission and activities, including a long-awaited project to update the accuracy of these measurements, former employees and experts say. As the world turns more and more toward operations that need precise coordinate systems like the ones NGS provides, the science that underpins this officeâs activities, these experts say, is becoming even more crucial.
The work of NGS, says Tim Burch, the executive director of the National Society of Professional Surveyors, âis kind of like oxygen. You donât know you need it until itâs not there.â
âNOAA remains dedicated to providing timely information, research, and resources that serve the American public and ensure our nationâs environmental and economic resilience,â NOAA spokesperson Alison Gillespie told WIRED in an email when asked about the downsizing of NGS.
NGS was formed in 1807 by Thomas Jefferson, the son of a surveyor and cartographer. Originally called the Survey of the Coast, the organization, led by a young Swiss immigrant named Ferdinand Hassler, was tasked with mapping the coastlines of the new country. Over the next 200 years, its mission expanded to cover the practice of geodesy: the science of calculating the shape of the Earth, its orientation in space, and its gravitational field.
âHassler understood that before you put pen to paper and make a chart or a map, if you wanted to [know how] things relate accurately one to another, especially if youâre going to do that over a large area like the United States, then you have to have a very strong mathematical foundation to put all these pieces together,â says Dave Doyle, a former chief geodetic surveyor at NGS. âThat is, in a very simple way, what the science of geodesy brings to the nation.â
NGS is currently responsible for maintaining and updating whatâs known as the National Spatial Reference System, a consistent system of physical coordinates used across federal and local governments, the private sector, and academia. This includes not only latitude and longitude, but also measurements of depth and height as well as calculations around Earthâs gravitational fieldâcrucial mathematics that inform much of the basic infrastructure around us, from constructing bridges to mapping out water and electric lines. NGS also maintains and operates more than 1,700 federally owned satellite receivers across the US, which provide publicly available geospatial information.
While individual surveyors can compare heights and distances in smaller areas, itâs far more difficult to compare mountains thousands of miles from each other, or know exactly how sea level rise may be affecting different areas of the country that have vastly different coastlines. Having a coordinated frame of reference across the entire countryâboth latitude and longitude as well as depth and heightâunderpins the accurate positioning of locations across the US in relation to each other, as well as in relation to other geospatial measurement systems across the world.
The Earth is also constantly shifting: the motion of tectonic plates causes latitude and longitude coordinates to slowly move, mandating that they be updated every few decades. In some placesâlike the coast of Louisiana, where subsidence is causing between 25 to 35 square feet of land loss each yearâthese shifts manifest much quicker.
âMost people can stand on the beach and see the water and turn around and look at a dune behind them and go: âOh, yeah. Thatâs about 5 or 6 feet above sea level,ââ says Doyle. But when it comes to building things, you need to be able to accurately take measurements at scale. âYou have to have some system of heights that is standardized across a large geographic body. I want consistent heights from New York to Maryland so we can build highways, so we can build utility infrastructure. You want to make sure water is always flowing in the appropriate direction.â
The US is currently working with a particularly outdated set of coordinate systems. The current measurements contained in the National Spatial Reference Systemâincluding latitude, longitude, and vertical heights, a set of reference systems called datumsâwere established in the 1980s, shortly after the US launched the worldâs first GPS satellites. In the years since those datums were created, increasingly advanced satellite technology has enabled geodesists to more accurately measure the shape and orientation of the Earth, and to better position their measurements. As a result, each point of measurement in the US datums is now, on average, around two meters off from its actual, accurate location. In some locations, itâs even more extreme.
As anyone who has tried to go for a run with a glitchy Garmin watch knows, current GPS technology has limits in terms of on-the-ground precision. For everyday navigation, exact locations arenât truly necessaryâbut for a variety of activities, from mapping floodplains to building bridges to measuring sea level rise, every centimeter becomes crucial. Ensuring hyper-accurate location is also becoming increasingly important as more and more industries are building up around automation that relies on precise spatial measurements.
âDo you want to get in an autonomous taxi that is plus or minus two and a half meters going down the road?â says Burch. âI donât. That is part of the critical piece here: all these systems have to be this tight and this precise moving forward.â
In order to update the USâs datums to be in line with satellite data, land shifts, and accurate measurements of the Earth, staff at NGS were planning on rolling out a long-awaited modernization of the National Spatial Reference System, bringing it into the 21st century and making it easier to update moving forward. Originally scheduled to be completed in 2022, the agency posted a notice in the federal register last fall detailing its updated timeline for rolling out the new datums and associated products in 2025 and 2026.
But three former staffers who left NGS in the past month say this planned rollout may be pushed even farther behind by staff losses, thanks to employees like them who took retirements, left their jobs, or were laid off as part of federal restructuring. According to former staff, NGS was sitting at 174 employees at the start of the year, with staff looking to fill an additional 15 positions to help with rolling out the new datums and educating federal agencies and local governments on their use. Since January 20, the agency has lost nearly a quarter of its staff and has had to freeze planned hiring. (When asked about the accuracy of these numbers, Gillespie, the NOAA spokesperson, told WIRED that the agency has a âlong-standing practice not to discuss personnel or internal management matters.â)
The remaining staff are in an âall hands on deckâ situation with the rollout, says Brett Howe, the former geodetic services division chief at NGS, who opted to retire at the end of April. Despite a dedicated staff, Howe says that the loss of many in senior leadership with decades of experience and institutional knowledge means that the agency canât afford to go through any more cuts.
âIf we get to hire back some people, we are still going to have trouble meeting that timeline of 2025 and 2026 [for the rollout], but weâll be able to make it work,â he says. âIf there are further cuts, or weâre not able to execute our [National Spatial Reference System] modernization plan, and then we get to a year, a year and a half from now, and we lose more peopleâeither through other layoffs or they just retireâthen I think weâre in real trouble. Then I wonder how we function as an agency.â
âAt this time, the ongoing NSRS modernization plans are still aligned with the dates in the Federal Register notice,â Gillespie told WIRED. âNGS will be releasing foundational data and supporting products for testing and feedback in 2025.â
The fate of NGS under the Trump administration is unclear. A NOAA budget proposal from the White House Office of Management and Budget sent to the agency in April cuts the budget for the National Ocean Service, which houses NGS, by more than half. Project 2025 does not mention NGS by name, but it does mandate moving NOAAâs surveying capabilities to other agencies.
âWe donât speculate about things that may or may not happen in the future,â Gillespie said when asked about potential upcoming changes to the agency. âNOAA will continue to deliver weather information, forecasts and warnings, and conduct research pursuant to our public safety mission.â
The sharp drop in staff numbers at NGS is the tail end of a long decline for the practice of geodesy in the US. In 2022, a group of leading geodesic experts authored a paper on what they dubbed the USâs âgeodesy crisis,â detailing how other world powers have invested in training geodesists over the past three decades while the US has wound down funding and training. China has invested particularly heavily in creating more geodesists: the country graduates between 9,000 and 12,500 geodesy students per year, many of whom are then employed by the government. By contrast, around 20 students graduated with advanced degrees in geodesy from US universities over the past decade.
This, the authors argue, has contributed to China rapidly overtaking the US in geospatial technologies and disciplines of all kinds. Nowhere is this clearer than with Chinaâs satellite navigation system, BeiDou, which has been gaining on the USâs GPS system in accuracy. In 2023, a US government advisory board on GPS stated in a memo that GPS is now âsubstantially inferiorâ to BeiDou.
Like other cuts to public science made under the Trump administration, the losses from blows to this agency could be substantial. A 2012 analysis found that every taxpayer dollar spent on NGSâs coastal mapping program returned $35 in benefits, while a 2019 report found that the NGS program that models gravitational fields would provide between $4.2 and $13.3 billion worth of benefit over 10 years. The private sector also relies heavily on public data provided by NGS. Some analyses project that the geospatial economy will grow to $1 trillion by the end of the decade. Itâs even more crucial, experts say, to have an updated spatial reference system in the US, as well as institutional knowledge of the basic science of how to measure and understand our Earth.
Many industries now âwant that high accuracy positioningâ that comes with advanced geospatial technology, Doyle says, âyet they donât understand the basics of the science. Now youâve got all these people punching buttons and getting numbers, and only a tiny percentage of them really understand what the numbers mean, and how one set of numbers relates to another.â

Steady, Not Stuck
Friday - April 25, 2025

There is a fixed square in the chart today that is encouraging you to address some fears. Some deep, nasty fears. To address them so you will stop being stuck by them.
A Fixed Square is when four planets and/or mathematical points (such as the Nodes, Ascendant, etc) are in squares and oppositions with each other. When occurring in the fixed signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius you are being encouraged to anchor something in, so create a strong foundation.
Involved in this fixed square is Black Moon Lilith at 3° Scorpio, a place that is bringing up some deep seated fears about what you believe about yourself, your capabilities and skills, or your worthiness. These are nasty fears, meaning they cut deep, and feel more like a nightmare.
The planets in this square - Sun in Taurus, Mars in Leo, Pluto in Aquarius - are encouraging you to see your worth and value, to listen to your heart, and to turn a false belief in a new confidence.
Will this happen overnight? Nope. But it won't happen at all if you don't start, and the skies suggest today is a great day.
Imagine how much more secure you would feel if those nasty fears were told to go back to the hell from whence they came?

Habemus Papam!
Earlier this morning, American-Peruvian Cardinal Robert Francis MartĂnez Prevost was elected as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the 267th leader of the Catholic Church.
While much has been said about his pastoral service and religious views, only a few know that Pope Leo XIV also has a strong foundation in STEM, much like his predecessor, Pope Francis, who studied chemistry.
Remarkably, according to our research, he is the first pope in 470 years with a distinct background in mathematics, following Pope Marcellus II, who reigned briefly in 1555.
Born on 14 September 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Prevost was drawn to academic life early on, influenced by his father, an educator, and his mother, a librarian.
In 1977, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Villanova University in Pennsylvania, USA.
During his university years, he was known for his deep affection for numbers and equations.
His extensive missionary work in Peru and direct engagement with pressing socio-environmental issues transformed him into a committed environmental advocate.
Calling for urgent climate action, he has urged the Church to move "from words to action," warning against the perils of unchecked technological development and advocating for a respectful, reciprocal relationship with nature.
His environmental stance is closely aligned with Pope Francis' priorities, as noted in the College of Cardinals Report.
Prevost is also celebrated for his exceptional multilingualism.
He speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese, and can read German and Latin, enabling him to communicate with diverse communities and effectively champion his advocacies worldwide.
Despite his demanding responsibilities, he makes some time for recreation. Prevost enjoys playing tennis and is reportedly a devoted fan of a local baseball club in his hometown of Chicago.
Pope Leo XIV stands as another powerful example of how STEM and faith can come together to serve the common good.

Willa Cather's only known letter to her partner Edith Lewis, written October 4, 1936, is in the Willa Cather Foundation Collections & Archives at the National Willa Cather Center and arguably one of our more precious pieces of her correspondence. It is also an exquisite love letterânot only to Lewis, who was working in New York when Cather was at the Shattuck Inn in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, but to all of the stars and heavens from Cather's windowâspecifically to Jupiter and Venus. [Bolding mine for emphasis.]
Sunday 4:30 p.m.
My Darling Edith;
I am sitting in your room, looking out on the woods you know so well. So far everything delights me. I am ashamed of my appetite for food, and as for sleepâI had forgotten that sleeping can be an active and very strong physical pleasure. It can! It has been for all of three nights. I wake up now and then, saturated with the pleasure of breathing clear mountain air (not cold, just chill air) of being up high with all the woods below me sleeping, too; in still white moonlight. Itâs a grand feeling.
One hour from now, out of your window, I shall see a sight unparalleledâJupiter and Venus both shining in the golden-rosy sky and both in the West; she not very far above the horizon, and he about mid-way between the zenith and the silvery lady planet. From 5:30 to 6:30 they are of a superb splendorâdeepening in color every second, in a still-daylight-sky guiltless of other stars, and the moon not up and the sun gone down behind Gap-mountain; those two above in the whole vault of heaven. It lasts so about an hour (did last night). Then the Lady, so silvery still, slips down into the clear rose colored glow to be near the departed sun, and imperial Jupiter hangs there alone. He goes down about 8:30. Surely it reminds one of Dante's "eternal wheelsâ. I canât but believe that all that majesty and all that beauty, those fated and unfailing appearances and exits, are something more than mathematics and horrible temperatures. If they are not, then we are the only wonderful thingsâbecause we can wonder.
I have worn my white silk suit almost constantly with no white hat, which is very awkward. By next week it will probably be colder. Everything you packed carried wonderfullyânot a wrinkle.
And now I must dress to receive the Planets, dear, as I wonât wish to take the time after they appearâand they will not wait for anybody.
Lovingly,
W.
I donât know when I have enjoyed Jupiter so much as this summer.

Good evening, listeners.
There is something truly wonderful about falling in love. The way it sneaks up on you, the way it changes the very fabric of your existence, the way it turns the world into something brighter, fuller, more alive. And, listeners, I am in love. I am so, so in love.
Carlosâmy Carlosâis perfect. Not in the neat, sterile, mathematically precise way that some might define perfection, no, but in the way that truly matters. He is perfect in the way a sunrise is perfect, in the way the first sip of coffee in the morning is perfect, in the way the universe aligns just so to make you stumble into the arms of the person you were always meant to find.
His voice, deep and warm, like oaken wood catching fire, lingers in my mind even when heâs not speaking. His hair, impossibly soft, curling just a little more at the edges, greying slightly at the templesâa detail that makes him even more distinguished, more handsome, more Carlos. And his jaw, square and strong, like the foundation of a great scientific theory, like the inevitability of discovery. His teethâoh, his teeth! Like a military cemetery! He is the most beautiful man I have ever seen.
And I must say, listeners, it was adorable when I learned that Carlos had felt a twinge of jealousy over how much art I had reblogged of Kevin after meeting our friendâs Kevin introject. I had to reassure him, of course! âCarlos, I said, âyou are the one I adore, the one I have always adored. You are the reason the sun rises and sets in my world. You are the heartbeat beneath the strange and shifting sands of Night Vale. My love for you is not just constantâit is inevitable.â
Oh, listeners, Iâve forgotten to tell you, havenât I? Silly me! Ah! Something amazing happened! Carlos appeared. Yes, thatâs right! He formed in that same system today, and suddenly, everything was new again. Itâs like the moment we first met all over again. I cannot stop thinking about him. I cannot stop reblogging art and posts and little notes about him. My heart is a record stuck on repeat, skipping endlessly on the track of Carlos, Carlos, Carlos. Thatâs really what prompted all of thisâ Iâve missed him so much!
He told me that, since the host of the system hasnât listened to Welcome to Night Vale much, he doesnât feel quite as much like himself as heâd like. But heâll be listening to my show with meâlearning, growing, shaping himself to be more Carlos-like. And listeners, while I think that is wonderful, I must say this: Carlos is already Carlos. His core, his heart, his brilliant, meticulous, awe-inspiring mindâthat is unchanged. And I love him, just as he is.
I love the way he explains scientific phenomena to me, even when I do not understand a single word of it. I love how his mind works, how he dissects the mysteries of the world with methodical precision and unwavering curiosity. I love how, even in a place where science should not work, he makes it work. He is a genius, listeners. A scientific marvel. I often tell him, âYou are so neat!â because, well, he is! He is the neatest person I have ever met. And sometimes he laughs and says, âYou always call me neat,â and I say, âWell, thatâs because you are!â and heâll just laugh and give me a kiss on the cheek and say âYouâre neat too, honey.â and Iâll melt right there.
He doesnât have all his memories right now, and that upsets him a little. And so, to help, I will tell him stories. Iâve already told him about our first date, so Iâll tell him all the others, too! About the way we sat on the curb of a cracked and lonely street, the sky above us a swirling void of unknowable stars, and how I knew, in that moment, that I never wanted to be anywhere else. And how on each and every date, every moment spent with him, I just keep realizing that over and overâ I never want to be in a world that doesnât have Carlos in it.
And so, I will remind him of everything. I will tell him how I love the way he furrows his brow when heâs deep in thought. How he gets so focused that he forgets to eat, and I have to place a sandwich in his hand to make sure he does. How he can explain the most complex scientific concept with absolute confidence, even if I, personally, believe it is more likely the result of time bees or government conspiracy.
I will remind him that I am his, and he is mine.
I will remind him that I love him.
And I will do so every day, for the rest of our very, very strange and wonderful lives.
Stay tuned next for the sound of a man sighing dreamily for an hour straight while writing âCarlosâ over and over in the margins of his notes.
Goodnight, Night Vale.
Goodnight.

The Role of Abacus in Developing Mathematical Confidence
How the Abacus Boosts Mathematical Confidence
The abacus, a tool with origins tracing back thousands of years, remains an invaluable instrument in modern education. Far from being obsolete, this simple yet powerful device has proven to be a cornerstone in developing mathematical confidence, especially among young learners.
Building a Strong Foundation
At its core, the abacus transforms abstract mathematical concepts into tangible, visual, and tactile experiences. For many students, numbers and calculations can feel overwhelming, especially when introduced in traditional formats like equations or symbols. The abacus bridges this gap by offering a hands-on approach. Moving beads to represent numbers allows learners to physically interact with math, making concepts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division more accessible and less intimidating.
Improving Concentration and Focus
Using the abacus requires concentration and precision. As students manipulate the beads, they learn to focus on each step of the calculation, developing discipline and patience. This repeated practice not only sharpens their mental math skills but also instills a sense of accomplishment with every correct answer. Over time, these small wins boost their confidence in handling increasingly complex mathematical problems.
Enhancing Memory and Visualization Skills
One of the unique benefits of the abacus is its ability to train the brain to perform mental calculations. As students become proficient, they often transition from the physical abacus to an imaginary one, visualizing bead movements in their minds. This practice enhances memory retention, spatial awareness, and cognitive flexibilityâskills that extend beyond math to other areas of learning and problem-solving.
Breaking the Fear of Math
Math anxiety is a common barrier for many students. The abacus, with its playful and interactive nature, removes the fear associated with numbers. It reframes math as a game of patterns and strategies rather than a rigid subject. This shift in perspective transforms reluctant learners into enthusiastic participants, empowering them to approach math with curiosity and confidence.
Lifelong Benefits
The skills developed through abacus trainingâfocus, visualization, memory, and problem-solvingâare not limited to mathematics. They lay the groundwork for analytical thinking and decision-making in everyday life. Whether a student pursues a career in science, business, or the arts, the confidence gained through mastering the abacus becomes a lifelong asset.
In conclusion, the abacus is much more than an ancient calculating tool; it is a gateway to building mathematical confidence. By simplifying complex concepts, fostering focus, and encouraging mental agility, the abacus empowers learners to conquer math with self-assurance and enthusiasm. In a world increasingly reliant on technology, the abacus reminds us that sometimes, the simplest tools can make the most profound impact.

For the good of mathematics (education update)
So my main concern academically is math, which has been the case for the past 2 years. Math was never my strong suit but it is only recently I have begun truly struggling with it. I believe this is due to the fact I have not properly understood my teachers since 8th grade, rather relying on my friends and the internet to help teach me math, therefore I donât actually have the foundations I need to continue math from where I am currently.
Because of this I am actually worried about my grades and my ability to graduate at my preferred time and get into a good university.
Iâm thinking of doing Khan Academy and reviewing my old math texts, as well as increasing my studying for my midterm (in November), but Iâm not sure if that will be enough to pull my grade to anything above 60% (my goal is 75% for the whole course but Iâm currently at just under 50%) does anyone have any tips? Iâve looked into tutors and stuff but there doesnât seem to be any that will work for what Iâm currently dealing with.

Lower Elementary - Math Practice CardsThe progression from concrete to abstract materials is a fundamental aspect of the learning process in a Montessori environment. Students begin with tangible, hands-on materials that make abstract concepts more accessible. For example, they might use Golden Beads or the Stamp Game to physically manipulate and understand the principles of addition, subtraction, and multiplication. As they become more comfortable with these concepts, they transition to more abstract tools, such as the Finger Board, which still provides a tactile experience but requires less physical manipulation. This gradual shift helps students internalize mathematical principles deeply and confidently. Math practice cards further support this progression by offering a range of problems that encourage independent and collaborative learning, bridging the gap between concrete experiences and abstract thinking. This method ensures that students build a strong foundation and are well-prepared for more complex mathematical challenges.
