Finally making a timeliness design-guide for Geno from ec-4o.verse! (Just a wip tho)
#spot!drawn#ec 4o!geno#he goes through a progression in this au unlike a lot of the others#because at one time he was more of a 'Sans' style guy until his setting and circumstances changed him for the worse#far left is pre-war when he's just a programming upstart. i mean he's a boss monster so he's been *programming* for years and years#but he's doing his own project as a volunteer on the side and that's where his real prowess comes from. he programs ecto (robot) AIs!#in this part of the design he's very casual and relaxed and it also features A.Z.! AZ is his first breakthrough because he's an#ultra-realistic ai with no magic infused who was supposed to be used to study mental illnesses in children w/o putting real kids in harsh#environments. but he kept A.Z. as he was the 'prototype' and now Geno monitors him and makes sure his programs function right while also#lowkey highkey raising AZ because he got attached#of course then there's mid-war which is technically also a bit before the war but technicalities don't count.#Geno is a talented programmer. the government (for Nefarious Plans) blackmail him into working at one of their facilities on new updates#for Ectos nation-wide. he doesn't exactly have a choice but he's far too deep in by the time he really understands what the new#protocols are for. then there's Post-war where he's sustained a lot of injuries and takes on his final 'Geno' appearance#at this point he's just trying to survive in the apocalypic wastes and finish what he started (cleaning the aftermath of the war)#but yeagg#the silly#(the government took his robot son but it's okay. he gets two mentally unstable boyfriends and reunites with AZ eventually)

@chasingowlsdownalleys I 1000% read this as "ai" not "al". And I was so goddamn confused why everyone was so randomly supportive of artificial intelligence until I scrolled down to see Weird Al's photo.
Because it works surprisingly well until we're talking about physical appearances.
I am SICK and TIRED of seeing so much hate towards Al! Al hasn't done ANYTHING to hurt ANYONE! Al is harmless!
But I can already hear the Al haters out there!
"Al isn't original!" No shit, Sherlock! That's what we love the most about Al.
"People aren't supposed to look like that!" That sounds like a problem between you and God, and frankly, plenty of people like the way Al looks.
"Al is just too WEIRD!" Have you ever thought that you might be to NORMAL to actually appreciate Al?
I think you all need to apologize to Al right now!
APOLOGIZE TO HIM

APOLOGIZE TO WEIRD AL RIGHT NOW!
#look - this is why fonts need to embrace the sideways “H” looking capital “I”.#save weird misunderstandings like this#but damn - if this post doesn't work as a pro-artificial intelligence post until we're talking about physical appearance#for the record#i am pro weird al#anti-AI#weird al#al yankovic

I've finally figured out an argument that convinces coding tech-bros that AI art is bad.
Got into a discussion today (actually a discussion, we were both very reasonable and calm even through I felt like committing violence) with a tech-bro-coded lady who claimed that people use AI in coding all the time so she didn't see why it mattered if people used AI in art.
Obviously I repressed the surge of violence because that would accomplish nothing. Plus, this lady is very articulate, the type who makes claims and you sit there thinking no that's wrong it must be but she said it so well you're kind of just waffling going but, no, wait-- so I knew I had to get this right if I was gonna come out of this unscathed.
The usual arguments about it being about the soul of it and creation fell flat, in fact she was adamant that anyone who believed that was in fact looking down at coding as an art form as she insisted it is. Which, sure, you can totally express yourself through coding. There's a lot more nuance as to the differences but clearly I was not going to win this one.
The other people I was with (literally 8 people anti-ai against her, but you can't change the mind of someone who doesn't want to listen and she just kept accusing us of devaluing coding as an art) took over for I kid you not 15 minutes while I tried desperately to come up with a clear and articulate way to explain the difference to her. They tried so many reasonable arguments, coding being for a function ("what, art doesn't serve a function?") coding being many discrete building blocks that you put together differently, and the AI simply provides the blocks and you put it together yourself ("isn't that what prompt building is") that it's bad for the environment ("but not if it's used for capitalism, hm?" "Yeah literally that's how capitalism works it doesn't care about the environment" she didn't like that response)
But I finally got it.
And the answer is: It's not about what you do, it's about what you claim to be.
Imagine that someone asks an AI to write a code and, by some miracle, it works perfectly without them having to tweak it---which is great because they couldn't tell you what a single solitary thing in that code means.
Now imagine this person, with their code that they don't know how it works, goes and applies to be a coder somewhere, presenting this AI code as proof that they're qualified.
Should they be hired?
She was horrified, of course. Of course they shouldn't be. They're not qualified. They can't actually code, and even if by some miracle they did have an AI successfully write a flawless code for every issue they came across that wouldn't be their code, you could hire any shmuck on the street to do that, no reason to pay someone like they're creating something.
When actual engineers use AI what they do is get some kind of base, which they then go though and check for problems and then if they find any they fix them, and add on to the base code with their own knowledge instead of just trying different prompt after prompt until they randomly come across one that works.
People who generate code like this don't usually call themselves engineers. They're people who needed a bit of code and didn't have the knowledge to generate it, and so used a resource.
And there you go. There are people who have none of the skills of artists, they don't practice, they don't create for themselves. When they feed the prompt to the AI they then don't just use the resulting image as a reference point for their own personal masterpiece, and if they don't like it they don't have the skills to change it---they simply try another prompt, and do that until they get something they like.
These people are calling themselves artists.
Not only that, these people are bringing the AI generated thing to interviews, and they are getting hired, leaving people who slave over their craft out of the job.
And that is the difference, for the tech bros who think AI art isn't a big deal.

good lord WHAT is your job?
I'm a software engineer for Microsoft. Which is a job I DID honestly enjoy quite a lot until whatever the hell's been going on lately.
Like imagine you're an architect and you get pulled in to help build a house. And it's a pretty well-engineered house! You can recognize and appreciate this and contribute the same standard of quality.
Until the guy who controls all the money shows up one day and says houses are NO good anymore. People want a BOX for the AI to live in. And actually start tearing down walls and ripping out the electrical and plumbing because the AI doesn't work with all that. Just make it a BOX for the AI.
So you do what they say and rip out things you're proud of and smash holes to drag all the AI through. But the AI is constantly changing and no one knows who you should ask to understand the shape the house needs to be to fit the AI. And the people who do know are probably too busy getting their necks breathed down by members of leadership who are paid millions a year to tell you to just do whatever ChatGPT does. So your team gets dicked around with unclear instructions given with absolute urgency. Also every 6 months they lay off 3% of the company so you walk in one day and Bob who's worked here for 25 years is just gone.
Also the AI is supposed to get good enough at building houses to replace your job. Maybe. It doesn't actually do that but the guy who controls all the money is hinging all that money on convincing other people that's true.
I miss house.

it's easier to apply for jobs than ever! so what if you lost your insurance, anyone can get a job these days, even without meds. everyone is hiring! there's a "good employee" shortage!

and of course you'll be hungry this whole time, aren't you, months and months of the same shit. months of no insurance, no meds, no funding, barely able to afford the internet and the phone and the rent - all things you need in order to even apply for our thing. but do it again! do it again and again and again, until you flip inside out and turn into a being of pure dread!
you're not hired yet because you're lazy. there's over one million AI-generated hallucinated jobs in your area. don't worry. with zipruiter, hiring and firing is easier than ever. sign up. stay on-call.
in the meantime, little peon - why don't you just fucking suffer.
#spilled ink#well you'll never guess how i feel about this#ps im hispanic. nonbinary. disabled. girl i cannot pick a fucking struggle.

I bought a new Pixel 7 recently and oh my God. if you haven't had to buy a new phone lately, and you are a person who would like things that just work, surprise! they don't do that anymore!
because you're a dumb baby who can't be trusted to manage battery life, and we're sure as shit not going to make it easy to swap a battery, we've installed an "AI" to learn your usage habits and force the battery to stop charging at 80% until an hour before you wake up, when it will charge to 100%. of course this constantly running AI will make your phone run hot as hell for the first month, but think of the battery life!
also, here's Gemini! you want that, right? we know you do, so we just installed it and set it as default, but in order to shut it off you have to sign up for it, because we'll just keep insisting we don't know what you're talking about as your phone runs hot as fuck. small price to pay for constant access to the disinformation machine we built!
how about Doze? did you know Android 'dozes' and will delay notifications, even ones you mark as priority, for up to 2 1/2 hours if you let your phone sit screen off for over 6 minutes? the only way around it is if the developer has marked it during development as a high priority notification, or to set an alarm to go off every 5 minutes, or run a command every time the phone restarts. what do you mean, you want timely discord and messenger notifications? think of the battery life!
however, the funniest 'AI' addition is that speech to text now tries to figure out where punctuation goes in my sentences, even though I don't want it to do that and never asked it to. so now instead of a block of text I can add it in, or fuck it we ball because I've got ADHD and you get what you get, every. speech to text? message I. dictate tends, to have random punctuation thrown in? as the 'AI' tries to figure out if I'm? asking. a? question or just changing pitch, often bogging itself down so far in the confusion that it misses the second half of whatever I'm saying
doing anything with technology these days is an unending cycle of going no i do not want to use AI. im not interested in setting up copilot. I do not want help building my site. I would like my autocorrect to make sense again. I do not want AI generated search suggestions. no. nope. still not. die
#also I've said it before but I can't get over GoFundMe offering AI fundraiser summaries#and offering it AGGRESSIVELY#it was difficult for me to understand how to skip over the repeated offers of chatgpt 'help' when posting about my pets#anyway fun times with Doze is that I use discord as a primary messaging source for friends etc#and sometimes Doze will just go 'nah discord doesn't need to connect' and it'll just stop working for hours#until the 'doze period' is over#and then I'll get like 50 notifications that are all set on my end to high priority disrupt DND#but since doze doesn't follow those rules I just don't get them

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning
If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:
These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:
But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.
Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.
If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.
Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.
Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
Update: There's now a Megathread about this on the AO3 subreddit.

Anyone know if LibreOffice has a mobile option? I've been using gdocs to edit pieces away from home when I don't have a chance to print a physical copy to mark up.
Microsoft Office, like many companies in recent months, has slyly turned on an “opt-out” feature that scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems. This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt out.
If you are a writer who uses MS Word to write any proprietary content (blog posts, novels, or any work you intend to protect with copyright and/or sell), you’re going to want to turn this feature off immediately. How to Turn off Word’s AI Access To Your Content
I won’t beat around the bush. Microsoft Office doesn’t make it easy to opt out of this new AI privacy agreement, as the feature is hidden through a series of popup menus in your settings:On a Windows computer, follow these steps to turn off “Connected Experiences”:
File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings > Optional Connected Experiences > Uncheck box: “Turn on optional connected experiences”
#For context most of my writing is stored on a hard drive (with like seven backups in clouds and physical media alike)#but I can't bring my laptop with me because the poor thing doesn't like to charge and also its keyboard doesn't work.#So what I USED to do is print out the part of the story I'm working on most and edit it the old fashioned way with pen and paper.#But it's getting harder and harder to get to a library with my work schedule and post=pandemic hour restrictions#so what I've BEEN doing in the past year or two is copying That Part to Google Docs so I have access to it when away from home.#But yeah I very much DETEST the idea of AI being trained on the writings that are a result of twenty years of dedicated craft-honing.#Oh and I still use MS Word 2003. The external hard drive that had my install file and product key died so after this laptop goes#Completely Dead I'll probably have to switch to LibreOffice but until that day comes I'm clinging HARD to my simple little Word'03 screen.#But alas: Word'03 doesn't have an option for editing on the go unless I bring a computer with me!#microsoft#ms word#ai#microsoft word#microsoft office#....MAY also see if I can turn this feature off at work. I haven't noticed any signs of AI yet but that doesn't mean it's not There...#(I write up a lot of guides for use around the office but also my job handles Highly Sensitive Personal Information from claimants#so it would be a MASSIVE oversight if they let the AI scrape that. We're talking SSNs and HIPAA-protected information and more.)

It's Time To Investigate SevenArt.ai
sevenart.ai is a website that uses ai to generate images.
Except, that's not all it can do.
It can also overlay ai filters onto images to create the illusion that the algorithm created these images.
And its primary image source is Tumblr.
It scrapes through the site for recent images that are at least 10 days old and has some notes attached to it, as well as copying the tags to make the unsuspecting user think that the post was from a genuine user.
No image is safe. Art, photography, screenshots, you name it.
Initially I thought that these are bots that just repost images from their site as well as bastardizations of pictures across tumblr, until a user by the name of @nataliedecorsair discovered that these "bots" can also block users and restrict replies.
Not only that, but these bots do not procreate and multiply like most bots do. Or at least, they have.
The following are the list of bots that have been found on this very site. Brace yourself. It's gonna be a long one:

The oldest ones have been created in March, started scraping in June/July, and later additions to the family have been created in July.
So, I have come to the conclusion that these accounts might be run by a combination of bot and human. Cyborg, if you will.
But it still doesn't answer my main question:
Who is running the whole operation?
The site itself gave us zero answers to work with.
No copyright, no link to the engine where the site is being used on, except for the sign in thingy (which I did.)
I gave the site a fake email and a shitty password.
Turns out it doesn't function like most sites that ask for an email and password.
Didn't check the burner email, the password isn't fully dotted and available for the whole world to see, and, and this is the important thing...
My browser didn't detect that this was an email and password thingy.
And there was no log off feature.
This could mean two things.
Either we have a site that doesn't have a functioning email and password database, or that we have a bunch of gullible people throwing their email and password in for people to potentially steal.
I can't confirm or deny these facts, because, again, the site has little to work with.
The code? Generic as all hell.
Tried searching for more information about this site, like the server it's on, or who owned the site, or something. ANYTHING.
Multiple sites pulled me in different directions. One site said it originates in Iceland. Others say its in California or Canada.
Luckily, the server it used was the same. Its powered by Cloudflare.
Unfortunately, I have no idea what to do with any of this information.
If you have any further information about this site, let me know.
Until there is a clear answer, we need to keep doing what we are doing.
Spread the word and report about these cretins.
If they want attention, then they are gonna get the worst attention.

clingy phainon is good for the soul, insinuated to be after nsfw activities but fic is sfw

"where are you going?" phainon whines from behind you.
"i have more work to do, phai," you tell him.
then, you feel a hand tug at the hem of your (his) shirt, gently stopping you from leaving. he grumbles petulantly at the mention of 'work' and when you look back, you're amused at the sight of his messy hair, swollen lips, and hickeys and bites that cover his chest, caused by yours truly.
you are in no better shape. in fact, you really don't want to be anywhere else but in his arms, and you hardly have any energy after being tossed around by him, but duty calls. he has already distracted you enough from the paper and admin work that needed to be done.
"stay," he pleads, crawling closer to you and throwing an arm around your waist. "don't leave me."
"phai, come on, this is urgent business."
"why do you want to leave me so badly?"
"i don't wanna leave you," you reach behind to cup his cheek. "but this needs to be done, you understand don't you? deliverer."
the light-haired man grumbles, digging his face into the side of your thigh, arm curling even tighter. "what i understand is that you're being cruel right now, trying to leave me all alone when i just want to cuddle."
"so you just want to cuddle? it doesn't even have to be with me?" he begins whining at your attempts of thwarting the conversation, trying to block out your words as you keep disarming his argument. "if you just wanna cuddle why don't you go ask mydei? or trailblazer? or dan heng?"
"shut up," he all but pulls you back down, using his strength to wrestle you into the sheets, keeping you flush against his chest. his skin is still flushed with heat, his embrace a warm cocoon. "i'd never want anyone but you."
"i know."
"good. so stay in bed this time, and don't try to leave," he mumbles, holding you very securely against him, his grip so binding that it's almost hard to breathe.
"okay, okay, i won't, please stop squeezing me so hard," you wince, patting his forearm. he loosens his grip after that, humming contentedly against your neck as you feel his nose nuzzling your skin.
after a few moments, he falls asleep, and you're gently extracting yourself from his arms again, holding your breath until you realise he's not waking up.
you hardly take three steps away from the bedroom when you hear him whine out your name again.

Fandom friends, we have won the battle (although we definitely did not win the war).
Yesterday, I wrote this post about lore.fm, an AI scraping app that was being marketed as an accessibility tool. Now, the person that has been promoting this app decided, in the light of plenty of backlash, to backtrack and pull it down, as they "feel uncomfortable" with how authors reacted to it.
Of this video, it's very important to highlight a couple of things:
the video is 3 long minutes of guilt-tripping: she keeps repeating that her (and her team, whose existence wasn't disclosed until yesterday: this app was marketed as being a sole woman's pet project) wanted to do good and create an accessibility tool. This comes with the underlying layer that all the authors who rightfully decided to defend their creations are ableist and in the wrong. It's a manipulation tactic;
there is no acknowledgement of the fact that the app was created by a team that specifically works to create apps that generate AI stories;
there is no explanation as to where the money to fund this app is coming from, and we all know that, when you're not paying for the product, you are the product;
this is backtracking, not genuine conversation: since the other day, the videos promoting this app went viral on r/Ao3, and plenty of people began contacting [email protected] to ask for their works to not be included. Then, the news spread on Tumblr too. They originally thought they could get away with "legally" stealing as much material as possible, and had to cut the project short because authors were doing everything in their power to stop them. The decision to take the app off for "reassessment" doesn't come from the goodness of their hearts.
At this point of the conversation, I think it's clear that the entirety of the project was relying on the perceived naïveté of fanfic readers and writers, who are oftentimes seen and stereotyped as being silly teens and not adults with real jobs and real knowledge of the law. When they saw dozens, if not hundreds, of authors contacting them to ask their works to not be featured, some of them threatening legal consequences, they had no other choice but to backtrack.
For now, the issue is closed, but don't think it'll be forever. Know your rights, even if you're "just" a fic author, and defend yourself and your works too from these scummy companies that see us as nothing but machines that churn out material for them to steal and profit off of with no consequences.

So wait, let me just ask for clarity because I want to understand. Do you support AI art?
i support art made with spontaneous and hands-off processes, i support the creation of art tools that are more art than tool & allow people to "participate" in someone else's creation vicariously a-la picrew, i don't support the institution of "AI" as a consumer grade technology industry that promises impossible things and prioritizes appearances and marketability over usability, i believe that if "AI" allowed people to siphon images directly from their brain with no effort required then it would be a good thing but I believe this is fundamentally impossible until we figure out how to read minds and the focus on arguing for or against accessibility is missing the point, i believe AI art can only ever be a pale imitation of the process of commissioning an artist who can't ever ask questions and cannot be trusted with object permanence, I believe copyright law is a head on the hydra of capitalism and doesn't serve artists, i believe that AI art isn't necessarily art theft but it CAN overfit to its data and create illegal works without telling you, which constitutes criminal levels of negligence, I believe all art is derivative in some way and some of the most seminal art made in this era of history has been far more dubiously infringing than AI art ever can be because AI art does not steal in the way a human does, I think the focus on energy consumption is transparently just a post-hoc justification for hating the thing you all already hated under the guise of environmentalism because it is a problem far from unique to AI, I think the focus on environmentalism was a distraction at best during the NFT craze too, i don't think AI art takes artists out of a job any more than stock photos or clipart does, but the proliferation of consumer-grade tools DOES run the risk of engendering bad client practices similar to the rise of machine translation and asking translators to simply "fix" a machine translated run of text at a marked down price, but this is not the fault of the technology itself and is instead a result of the ideological push being made by the biggest actors in the industry, i think AI art is ugly as sin and carries the pervasive quality of looking normal at a glance but getting worse and worse the longer you look at it, which can be interesting but often isn't, i think ai art is shit google images and the controversy is overblown but I think machine learning is here to stay and it will inevitably decentralize again after the immense costs catch up to all the corpos relying on it to win the future.
so like, yes and no.
