Every Great King - Chapter One (Prince Caspian x Reader)
Chapter One - Fleeing
*not my gif*
Series Summary: You had grown up with Caspian and naturally you were best friends. Completely inseparable for as long as you both could remember, learning with the professor together, attending (rather boring) balls and banquets and running around the castle grounds in the spring and summer. But then Miraz’s own son is born and Caspian’s life is at risk. From here the series follows the plot of Prince Caspian and then The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
A\N: This chapter is the beginning of Prince Caspian :) Also, feedback is always greatly appreciated <33
Word Count - 1419
Prologue here

The night sky was unusually calm. Silent and clear, stars littering the sky and forming odd shapes which only the centaurs of the old ages could truly decipher. The trees swayed a little in the cold breeze, rabbits and deer wandered about the fields a little way away from the castle in peace, unbothered and quite happy.
Inside the castle, however, was a completely different story. Screams and pants had filled the hallways since the early afternoon as Miraz's wife gave birth to her firstborn. They had waited only too long to be blessed with a child and although you appeared overjoyed for them, you worried what would happen to Caspian if this child was a boy. Miraz didn't seem the type to want to hand over his kingdom to his nephew if his own son was alive and well. In an attempt to sleep earlier in the night you were forced to ignore these worries, convincing yourself that nobody could be that cruel-hearted.
Unbeknownst to you, in your sleeping form, Miraz's child was indeed announced a son. Upon hearing this, Doctor Cornelius had raced to the prince's bed chamber to wake him up with a shake to his shoulder.
"Five more minutes," Caspian mumbled, nuzzling his head into his pillow.
"You won't be watching the stars tonight, my prince." Doctor Cornelius gave another, harsher, shake at Caspian. "Come, we must hurry."
Caspian, now in a state of panic upon hearing his professor's words, was a little more awake and sat up, letting Doctor Cornelius pull him across the room and into his wardrobe.
"Professor, what's going on?" Caspian whispered, his eyebrows furrowing together while he stumbled into his wardrobe.
"Your aunt has given birth...to a son." that simple sentence was all Caspian needed to piece together the jigsaw. Now that Miraz had his own heir, Capsian was simply in the way. He took a shaky breath and some of Miraz's men burst into the room, surrounding the bed he was peacefully sleeping in just moments ago. Without hesitating, they shot their arrows at where he was meant to be, causing Caspian to flinch as he watched through the crack in the wardrobe door.
It didn't take the soldiers long to realise that Caspian wasn't in the room (although he thought it rather stupid they didn't check the wardrobe but equally was thankful) and they left in a hurry, perhaps hoping to catch him escaping.
"Y\N!" he gasped quietly as the professor pushed him out of the wardrobe. "They'll lock her in the dungeons or worse, I can't leave her." Caspian knew he would have to leave now but still pleaded with Doctor Cornelius to go and get you first.
"Quickly. I'll wait for you with your horse."
The two men ran off separate ways - Doctor Cornelius towards a passageway to the stables and Caspian to the hallway that your bedroom was on. Quietly as he could he ran in and started to shake you awake, just as Cornelius had done to him.
"Y\N, wake up, come on!" he said as loudly as he could without anyone outside the room hearing him. You stirred a little before opening your eyes, startled to see Caspian above you. "Quickly, come on."
Caspian tugged your arm to get you out of bed, catching you when you stumbled a little since you were still half asleep.
"What's going on?" you mumbled, worried.
"There isn't time to explain. You trust me, right?" he held onto your forearms , looking right into your eyes.
"Of course." you nodded and followed him quickly out of the room and down a spiral staircase until you got to the stables where you were met with Doctor Cornelius also looking on edge. He helped you both into some armour and Capsian handed you a sword, taking one for himself too. All those secret training sessions you had with him might finally come in useful after all.
"You must make for the woods." The professor told you both sternly whilst Caspian helped you onto the horse so that you were sitting behind him. "They won't follow you there." The both of you nodded, not wanting to waste time with questions. Caspian was handed a package and Doctor Cornelius continued. "It has taken me many years to find it. Do not use it except at your greatest need."
You could only assume it was some sort of relic from the Golden Age that he had taught you about in one of his lessons. It was Caspian's turn to speak now.
"Will we ever see you again?"
"I hope so, my dears." he placed a hand on each of your arms. "There is so much I meant to tell you. Everything you know is about to change." He let go and hit the back of the horse to force you both to leave.
Caspian rode as quickly as the horse could go across the castle grounds and towards the forest, as instructed.
"Is it your uncle?" you could only assume your worries about him wanting Caspian out of the picture were coming true.
"Yes. Doctor Cornelius woke me up about a minute before they shot arrows at my bed. They meant to kill me in my sleep." He spoke a bit louder than you had, fighting against the effect the wind was having as you flew through grass and trees. You didn't quite know what to say in order to comfort him so you gave a squeeze with your arms as they were already wrapped around his middle.
"But..." your brows pressed together in confusion, although Caspian couldn't see. "Why did you come for me?"
Caspian was quiet for a moment, thinking carefully about his response. "I thought they might do something much worse than killing you. I couldn't leave you."
Again, you didn't quite have the words to reply but before you could think of one you realised the Telmarine soldiers were gaining on you as you approached a river. Caspian seemed to have noticed too because he didn't hesitate for one moment and sent the horse straight into the water. You watched as the soldiers also tried to cross but as one of them was washed away, the lot of them halted watching you get away. Caspian had turned to look too.
"CASPIAN!" you shouted, realising you were going to go flying straight into a thick tree branch as he was still looking back. Your realisation was too late as you were both knocked to the ground. Caspian's hand was quick to grab your ankle as he realised his foot was trapped in the stirrup still, not wanting for you to be separated and caught. You wished he hadn't, though, when you were dragged across the dirt - branches kept getting caught in your hair and you were sure both you and your nightdress were covered in cuts. It wasn't too long before Caspian managed to escape the grip of the stirrup and you were both left panting on the ground, adrenaline and pain flowing through your body.
Caspian was first to sit up, helping you to do so as well. "Are you alright?" his voice was barely a whisper but in the silence of the forest you could hear him perfectly.
"Yes. Are you?" he nodded, still taking deep breaths and placing a soft kiss onto your forehead in relief and looking around. You followed, looking for a clearing you could both stay at for a while. Instead, you saw a tree opening and assumed you must have hit your head very hard falling off of the horse when two dwarves walked out of it. You gasped a little and turned to Caspian who was looking at the same spot as you. So either it was really happening or you'd both gone mad. Comforting.
"They have seen us!" one of them shouted, pointing at you. Your eyes grew wide with fear as you realised the Telmarine soldiers were also getting far too close for comfort. The other dwarf drew his sword and started running towards you both while the other starts running towards the soldier.
"Caspian, the package!" you nudged him and he took the prompt, quickly drawing it from his belt and unwrapping it, realising almost immediately that it was High Queen's Susan's horn from the Golden age. He took a deep breath and blew as hard as he could. The horn sounded throughout the forest so loud it made you wince. It didn't last long though, the dwarf hitting you both very hard on the head soon after. You fell back towards the ground, everything going black.
