How To Block Tags (no browser add ons)
How to exclude tags so that you don't have to set filters every time you search. This is where it gets more complicated. But the results can be well worth it if there are specific tags you don't want to see. Now this isn't full-proof by any means due to the fact that not everyone is going to tag their work appropriately, and some tags that have such varied meanings it can be hard to pin them down. But it should really reduce your accidental exposure to things you don't like.
Excluding Ships
Firstly you go into your site skin (if you don't have one see this post) and click on Custom CSS, it will show the box where the code for the skin will go:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then for excluding tags there is a piece of code you must use:
.blurb:has(a[href$="/tags/tagstringhere/works"]) { display: none !important; }
Excluding a ship tag (maybe one that's popular in a fandom you're in, and always clogs the search, that you simply hate) I find works best since it's such a specific tag. To do this you will need the URL pulled directly from the tag. I will use a ship I don't like to demonstrate. I want to excluding the ship of Hank Anderson/Connor from my searches because I have no interest in reading for this ship:
https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Hank%20Anderson*s*Connor/works
For the tag block to work we don't need the whole URL:
https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Hank%20Anderson*s*Connor/works
Take the remaining part and paste it into the "quotation marks". It should look something like this:
.blurb:has(a[href$="/tags/Hank%20Anderson*s*Connor/works"]) { display: none !important; }
Tumblr media
Update the skin and your display should look like this for the excluded ship:
Tumblr media
You can repeat this process as many times as needed for different ships and you will have no more works tagged with the specific ship or ships appearing in your search. Pretty cool!!!
Excluding Other Tags
Excluding other tags is done in the same way, using the same piece of code. But it may not be as effective, especially if it's from the 'additional tags' section. There are many tags that link to other tags so excluding all of them that link up may not be possible, but excluding the main offenders should help reduce your exposure to works you don't like.
Here's an example list of some tags that I want to exclude:
Puppy Play
Pet Play (which links to the tag 'Animal Play' allong with many others)
Here's what the code I have used to exclude them looks like:
.blurb:has(a[href$="/tags/Puppy%20Play/works"]) { display: none !important; } .blurb:has(a[href$="/tags/Animal%20Play/works"]) { display: none !important; } .blurb:has(a[href$="/tags/Petplay/works"]) { display: none !important; } .blurb:has(a[href$="/tags/Pet%20Play/works"]) { display: none !important; }
This does not catch all works of this type because there are so many variations upon these tags. But it means I won't have to filter it manually every time I search. And I can add to these should I encounter anything else I don't want to read.

Adding media to AO3 fics
Got this question from @nelly1321 and decided I would make a little tutorial for it if anyone else is interested.
Hey! I had a question. I noticed for some of your AO3 fics that you added these beautiful pictures/collages. I'm wondering how you upload them. Idk if you also use Canva, but that's where I made mine, and I'm having trouble attaching them to the site.
Hopefully, you can offer me some tips? It'd be much appreciated :)
There are multiple ways to add media to your AO3 fics, this is just the system I use and it works for me. I know it seems like a lot of steps, but once you’ve done it a few times, it’s pretty easy to get in the habit.
I use Canva for my moodboards as well. I usually type “photo collage” into the search bar and pick a free one from that list. But now I’ve done so many moodboards that when I’m making a new one, I’ll often just copy the template from an old one and tweak from there.
So step one: Make a moodboard in Canva or whatever software you prefer, and download it as a png.
Step two: Go to imgur and click “New post” in the top left corner.
Step three: Upload the image (there are multiple ways to do this – I usually do “Choose Photo/Video” and upload from my computer).
Step four: This is the weird step, imo. DON’T use the “Grab Link” button. Instead, right click on the photo and click “Open Image in New Tab.”
Step five: In the new tab, copy the png link from the address bar.
Step six: Now, go to your fic in AO3. You can either do it while you’re posting, or after – it doesn’t matter. Just open the chapter you want to post it on and go to the Rich Text setting (as opposed to HTML).
Step seven: Make a little space at the top of your text (I always put mine at the top, but obviously, up to you where you want it to go). Click this little button in the text settings that looks like a painting. Paste the png link from imgur into the “Source” box.
Tumblr media
Step eight: The default size is quite large. I set my dimensions to 399 x 319, because I always use a landscape moodboard, but again, up to you!
Step nine: Click save and publish the story!
Hope that helps!

How to use Em Dash (—) and Semi Colon ( ; )
Since the ai accusations are still being thrown around, here's how i personally like to use these GASP ai telltales. 🦄✨
Em Dashes (—)
To emphasize a shift / action / thought.
They're accusing us—actually accusing us—of using AI.
To add drama.
They dismissed our skills as AI—didn't even think twice, the dimwits—and believed they were onto something.
To insert a sudden thought. Surely they wouldn't do that to us—would they?
To interrupt someone's speech. "Hey, please don't say that. I honed my craft through years of blood and tears—" "Shut up, prompter."
To interrupt someone's thoughts / insert a sudden event.
We're going to get those kudos. We're going to get those reblogs—
A chronically online Steve commented, “it sounds like ai, idk.”
Semi Colons ( ; )
To join two closely related independent sentences / connect ideas.
Not only ChatGPT is capable of correct punctuation; who do you think it learned from in the first place?
Tumblr media
Ultimate pro tip: use them whenever the fuck you want. You don't owe anyone your creative process. 🌈

I need to save this somewhere better, I always have to google it and start Stressing when it takes some term-refining to find.
I would assume this also works on a download since it's built in to the embed but I haven't done any testing
(and a quick tag for @prince-liest since this reblog is from myself)
@Fanfic writers:
My friend send me this link, is a series on a profile on Ao3 (tumblr) that has different tutorials to insert things to fanfics via html code, I thought I would share bc it’s really cool
Lists of tutorials:
How to make images fit in mobile browsers
This is a tutorial/live example on how to make large images fit on mobile browsers but remain normal size on desktop browsers.
How to mimic letters, fliers, and stationery without using images
This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic the look of letters, fliers, and stationery (as well as other forms of written media) without using images. For all your epistolary fic needs.
How to make a “choose your own adventure” Fic
This is a tutorial/live example on how to create a "Choose Your Own Adventure" fic. While this has been explained before (see here), this particular tutorial shows you how to use a work skin to hide the next parts from the reader until they click through to get to them.
How to make linked footnotes on Ao3
This is a live example of how an author can create linked footnotes in their work with only a little bit of HTML and no workskins required. This is best viewed by clicking "Entire Work". While I've included the actual coding in bold and italic once you click "Hide Creator's Style", there's a more detailed explanation here.
How to change text on Ao3 when the cursor is hovering over it (or clicked on mobile)
This a tutorial/live example on how to have text change or appear once a cursor is hovering over it. Helpful for pop-up spoilers, language translations, quick author's notes, etc.
How to mimic author’s notes and Kudos/Comment buttons
Anonymous on tumblr: do you have a skin that would mimic the author’s notes and review/kudos buttons section from the end of a fic? the desired effect being that the fic could go on after the “end” of the fic, so after the author’s notes and review/kudos buttons
Here's a tutorial/live example to do just that, with some of the buttons actually functioning. I'll explain more inside!
How to wrap text around images
This is a tutorial/live example on how to align images to the left or right of the screen and have text wrap around them.
How to mimic email windows
This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic email windows on AO3 without the need to use images.
How to make ios text messages on Ao3
This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic iOS text messages on AO3 without the need to use images. There's also a chapter on how to have emojis displayed on AO3 as well.
How to make Customized page deviders
Bored with the default page dividers? This is a tutorial/live example on how customize your page dividers with no images needed (though I do show you how you could use images if you wanted to do such a thing).
How to make invisible text (That can be highlighted)
This is a live example how to make invisible text that can only be seen by highlighting the text. Tutorial is included in text, and you can always leave comments about questions you may have.
MOBILE USERS: Sadly, this probably won't work for you, since highlighting in a mobile browser is different than web. I've tried correcting this, but have yet to find a solution.
How to make a rounded playlist
Original coding and design is from layouttest. I make no claims for it, just tweaked it so it will work on AO3.
How to create notebook lined paper on Ao3
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of lined notebook paper in their work. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
Sticky notes on Ao3 without using images
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of sticky notes (aka Post-Its) in their fic. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
How to make deadpool’s thinking thinking boxes on Ao3
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of Deadpool's thinking boxes in their fic. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
How to make newspaper articles on Ao3
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of a newspaper article in their work. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.

After School Ghost Theory 101 with Professor Fenton
Switch to light mode or Classic Blue to get the full transparency effect!
[Image ID: A four page comic that starts with Danny Fenton standing in front of a whiteboard holding up a white cat. "Question: Do ghosts purr?”
Tucker: “Danny when was the last time you slept?” Danny: “Irrelevant.”
Danny info-dumps: “The answer is yes, but also no. Technically, all beings that possess a core are constantly "purring", a.k.a. Core Vibrations. Core Vibrations are a nonverbal, emotion-based communication system between Ghosts, similar to how some living species use pheromones to communicate. The exact tone of each ghost is different the same way people's voices are different. Humans can only hear these vibrations when the frequency passes through their audible range (20Hz - 20KHz), hence the 'purring' sound. When the range dips into infrasound (16 - 20Hz) it can cause feelings of fear and unease in humans that they often associate with ghosts and the supernatural. Also known as the ‘Heebie Jeebies.’”
Danny, wiping off the whiteboard: “Any questions before we move on?"
Danny’s audience consists of Wes Weston, Tucker Foley, Sam Manson, Danny’s clone Ellie, and Dash Baxter in a classroom. Wes is seated at a desk at the front taking notes. Tucker is sitting on Sam’s lap playing on a Switch, Ellie is sitting on a desk behind them. Dash is asleep at the back of the room.
Ellie, now holding the cat: “Is this Vlad’s first cat!?” Wes: "Could you tone down the floating eyes before the next part? They're kinda distracting." Danny: "What eyes?" Wes: “Please stop gaslighting me.”
A transparency trick on the last page reveals dark shadows and eyes all around Danny when viewed in dark mode. /.End ID]
An Extended Image ID is available under the read more because it’s over 1k. Side by side light and dark mode versions of the transparency trick is also available under the cut.
[Extended Image ID: The post contains a four page comic. The first page shows two comic panels with white borders. The top panel features a bedraggled looking Danny Fenton from the waist up holding a disgruntled fluffy white cat. There are bags under his eyes, his hair is messy, his arms are covered in bandaids and cat scratches, and his nails are painted black. He’s wearing a white shirt with red sleeves and a red oval on the front. In a large green text bubble he says “Question: Do ghosts purr?” A small orange text bubble under it asks “Danny when was the last time you slept?” “Irrelevant” Danny replies.
In the bottom panel Danny is standing on the far left side of the panel in front of a whiteboard in a classroom with the cat under his arm. He’s wearing baggy jeans with holes in the knees and his classic white and red Converse shoes. The whiteboard behind him has partially erased doodles around the edges including some flowers, stars, and Phantom’s DP symbol. There are a few balls of paper on the floor. Partially out of frame on the wall behind Danny is a poster of  Einstein and above it a clock. Pointing at the whiteboard with a marker Danny says “The answer: Yes but also no” His words are written on the whiteboard. Under the words is a drawing of a stick figure and a green bedsheet ghost with a circle between them. The circle is surrounded by green squiggly lines radiating out from it. Under the circle, an arrow is drawn pointing to it with the words ‘core vibrations’ written on the board. A green text bubble in the space under the whiteboard says “Technically, all beings that possess a core are constantly "purring", a.k.a. Core Vibrations.”
On the second page there are two blocks of text, each followed by a drawing. The page background is a pale, greenish-grey with subtle scuff marks imitating the look of a whiteboard. The first block of text at the top of the page reads “Core Vibrations are a nonverbal, emotion-based communication system between Ghosts, similar to how some living species use pheromones to communicate. The exact tone of each ghost is different the same way people's voices are different.” Under the text, imitating the look of dry erase marker, is a drawing of two simple ghosts smiling and waving to each other. They both have a small green circle drawn on their chest area with green squiggly lines radiating out from each ghost. Between the two cores, two parallel arrows are drawn, facing opposite directions. Under the arrows is the text “core to core communication.”
Under the ghosts is a second block of text reading “Humans can only hear these vibrations when the frequency passes through their audible range (20Hz - 20KHz), hence the 'purring' sound. When the range dips into infrasound (16 - 20Hz) it can cause feelings of fear and unease in humans that they often associate with ghosts and the supernatural. Also known as the ‘Heebie Jeebies.’” Under the text a red arrow points from the words ‘heebie jeebies’ to a simple drawing of Dash Baxter holding a flashlight and looking scared. There is a cobweb with a dangling spider drawn to his right and a bunch of green blob ghosts behind him to his left. In blue text the blobs say “you forgot to update your mailing address with the IRS” and “you filed your taxes incorrectly.”
The third page once again shows two comic panels. In the top panel Danny takes up the centre. He’s stretched across the whiteboard in a dynamic pose erasing the drawing of frightened Dash with a big swipe. One hand is braced on the board as he looks over his shoulder and asks “Anyone got questions before we move on?” If the image is viewed in dark mode, there are five, messily drawn eyes of varying sizes surrounding Danny. If viewed in light mode, the eyes are absent.
The bottom comic panel reveals Danny’s audience to be Wes Weston, Tucker Foley, Sam Manson, Danny’s clone Ellie, and Dash Baxter. In the bottom left corner, Wes sits slouched at a desk at the front of the classroom with papers and an open notebook spread out over his desk. He’s wearing a red zip up hoodie with white sleeves. His hoodie is unzipped showing a green shirt underneath that matches the colour of his eyes. At the desk beside him Tucker and Sam share a chair with their focus on Tucker’s Switch and not Danny’s presentation. Tucker is sitting in Sam’s lap with her arms around his waist and her head resting on his shoulder. Tucker is wearing a red beanie with short dreads, goldenrod yellow turtleneck sweater, green cargo pants, and white shoes. Sam is wearing a black crop top with a fishnet layer over top, purple pleated plaid skirt, artistically ripped purple leggings, and black combat boots with bright green laces. Tucker has the tips of his dread dyed green and purple. Sam has streaks of purple, green, and orange in her hair. Ellie is sitting cross legged on top of a desk two rows behind Sam and Tucker. She’s wearing a cropped hoodie with the same colours as Danny’s shirt and black track pants with white and red shoes. Her hair is tied in a high ponytail and she is holding the squirming fluffy white cat up in the air. At the very back of the classroom behind Wes’ left shoulder Dash can be seen asleep slouched over his desk. Wes has one hand resting on his desk holding a mechanical pencil the other partially raised with his hand open. In a beige text bubble with red text he replies to Danny’s question with an unimpressed look on his face “Could you tone down the floating eyes before the next part? They're kinda distracting.” Under his text bubble a small blue text bubble from Ellie asks “Is this Vlad’s first cat!?” If the image is viewed in dark mode, there are three visible floating eyes off to the side of the panel. If viewed in light mode, the eyes are absent.
The final comic page is a single, full body shot of Danny standing in front of the blank whiteboard. He’s looking over his shoulder, slightly turned with his back mostly towards the classroom and the eraser in his hand. He has an incredulous look on his face. If the page is viewed in dark mode, the background looks dark and Danny is surrounded by dozens eyes of in all different sizes. If viewed in light mode, the eyes are absent. In a green text bubble Danny asks “What eyes?” In the bottom left corner Wes replies “Please stop gaslighting me.” /.End ID]

Dialogues to Kick-start your Chapter/Writer's Block
"Excuse me?"
"Why?"
"Where?"
"How?"
"When?"
"What?"
"No."
"Yes."
"Hell no."
"Hell yes!"
"Fuck off!"
"Fuck me!"
"In what world!"
"Which time?"
"Are you sure?"
"I don't think so."
"Not really,"
"Maybe, if you think about it—"
"What the fuck."
"Okay, catch this (insert ridiculous proposition)"
"So, I'll meet you at 6?"
"For the millionth fucking time—"
"Ya think?"
"This is it, then?"
"Come to my place. Now."
"She's called you. Right now."
"Oh, we're so screwed!"
"Hey."
"Don't do that."
"You've lost it. Completely lost it."
"What were you thinking?"
"I am confident that you belong in an asylum."
"I think you should get some help."
"Shove it up your ass!"
"Piss on it."
"I have a list and you're the top 5."
"I'd never do that."
"I'd definitely do that."
"It does sound like something I'll say, but I didn't say it. I swear!"
"Do you have any idea how hard it is?"
(as a response to the above dialogue ^) "Not harder than me for sure." / "It's not hard. Or else you wouldn't be doing it at all."
"Maybe I just need a little alcohol."
"Smells like jealousy to me."
"Lord, please."

20 Alternative Losses Your Protagonist Can Face That Don't Involve the Death of a Person.
In one of my recent posts, I talked about losses as a core principle in driving a plot forward.
Tumblr media
It's recommended in almost all guides. But here's the thing: someone doesn't have to actually die to create that emotional rollercoaster.
Here are 20 different losses your protagonist can face without losing someone to the cold hands of death:
1. Loss of a dream job opportunity
2. End of a long-term relationship or marriage
3. Betrayal by a close friend or family member
4. Financial ruin or bankruptcy
5. Loss of a beloved pet (The pet could go missing.)
6. Rejection from a prestigious program or institution
7. Injury or illness leading to the loss of physical abilities
8. Destruction of a childhood home
9. Loss of custody of a child
10. Failure to achieve a lifelong dream or goal
11. Being falsely accused of a crime
12. Natural disaster destroying personal belongings and home
13. Loss of a valuable family heirloom
14. Experiencing discrimination or injustice
15. Being forced to move away from a beloved community
16. Losing a significant competition or contest
17. Loss of memory or cognitive abilities
18. Falling out with a mentor or role model
19. Closure of a cherished local business
20. Loss of one's reputation due to scandal or rumor
Thank you for all of your support. If you love my blog, consider gifting me a rose. Val's here, and I hope your characters are ready to paint the town red.
Check out this printable template that helps you structure the nuanced parts of your plot you normally skip out on.

Keep track of every item on your character. I often make the mistake of giving a character an accessory and then putting them in a scene where someone would wonder where that accessory went.
Be sure not to skip them putting it aside, losing it, destroying it, etc.
I.E, if they carry a bag but they arrived home and are about to do their face routine, make sure to add that they set their bag down on the chair or something

Steps to Writing a ‘Chosen One’ Character
Tumblr media
follow for more tips 💋 || request writing tips 💌
1. Establish the Foundation
Define Their Origin: Decide what makes them the Chosen One—prophecy, destiny, lineage, or sheer coincidence. Clarify why they, specifically, are given this role.
Determine Their Initial Attitude: Are they reluctant, eager, indifferent? Show how they react to the burden of being chosen.
Set Their Core Struggles: Define the internal and external conflicts they will face. Do they wrestle with imposter syndrome, moral dilemmas, or fear of failure?
2. Shape Their Role in the Story
Decide Their Purpose: Are they meant to destroy an evil force, restore balance, protect a sacred artifact, or lead a rebellion? Ensure their journey aligns with the story’s central themes.
Avoid Overpowered Tropes: They shouldn’t be flawless. Give them limitations, weaknesses, or struggles that make their growth compelling.
Show Their Impact on Others: How do allies, mentors, or even enemies perceive them? Their role should ripple beyond just their own development.
3. Build Their Character Development
Challenge Their Destiny: Let them question, doubt, or even reject their role at some point. Growth comes from resistance, not blind acceptance.
Forge Meaningful Relationships: Give them friends, mentors, and rivals who help shape their journey. Avoid making them the sole focus of the story’s world.
Balance Personal Desires and Duty: Show moments where their personal wants clash with their responsibilities as the Chosen One.
4. Define Their Abilities and Training
Determine Their Power Source: Magic, divine intervention, inherited skill, or sheer perseverance—whatever it is, make it unique and consistent.
Avoid Instant Mastery: They should struggle, fail, and improve through effort, mentorship, and experience.
Give Them a Signature Strength and Weakness: Maybe they’re brilliant strategists but poor close-combat fighters, or they can harness powerful magic but suffer from physical fragility.
5. Create Meaningful Obstacles
Test Their Morals and Limits: Put them in situations where they must make difficult choices. Let their decisions shape their character.
Introduce Personal Stakes: The battle shouldn’t just be about saving the world—it should also mean something deeply personal to them.
Make Victory Costly: Triumph shouldn’t come without sacrifice—whether it’s losing loved ones, suffering personal injuries, or making difficult trade-offs.
6. Develop a Satisfying Arc
Decide Their Ultimate Fate: Will they survive and thrive? Sacrifice themselves for the greater good? Retire into obscurity? Make sure their journey reaches a meaningful conclusion.
Showcase Their Legacy: Whether they win or lose, let their choices leave a lasting impact on the world around them.
Avoid Predictability: Subvert clichés where possible—maybe the Chosen One isn’t the true hero, or perhaps their destiny isn’t as set in stone as they believed.
Examples of ‘Chosen One’ Characters
Film/TV Examples:
Luke Skywalker (Star Wars): A reluctant hero who grows into his role while battling his own darkness.
Aang (Avatar: The Last Airbender): A lighthearted but deeply burdened Chosen One struggling with war and responsibility.
Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer): A Chosen One who balances personal life with monster-hunting, questioning fate and sacrifice.
2. Literature Examples:
Harry Potter (Harry Potter series): A prophesied hero whose strengths lie in his friendships and moral choices.
Percy Jackson (Percy Jackson & the Olympians): A reluctant demigod whose humor and flaws make him a relatable Chosen One.
Duke the Guarder (The Guardians of Camoria series): A noble-hearted Chosen One defined by mercy, internal conflict, and a fear of death.

Showing versus Telling
I struggle a lot with "showing and not telling." Here's some exercises and techniques I've tried to practice this from researching different methods that I just conjured up together (please take with a grain of salt, everyone is different, lol.):
Object Observation: Choose an object in your immediate vicinity and describe it without naming what it is. Include details about its texture, color, size, shape, and any other distinctive features. Basically: have someone else to identify it based on your description.
Character Emotions: Write a list of emotions and for each one, write a short scene that shows a character experiencing that emotion without directly stating what the emotion is. i.e., Instead of saying, "Alistair was angry", you could say... "Alistair's fists clenched, his jaw tightened; his face turned red as he stared at the broken amulet on the floor."
Active Verbs: Challenge yourself to rewrite sentences using more active, specific verbs. i.e., "She walked into the room" (telling) could become, "She strutted into the room, her boot heels clicking against the marble floor" (showing).
Sensory Details: Choose a setting, real or fictional, and describe it using all five senses. What can a character see, smell, hear, taste, and touch in this environment, or moment?
Dialogue: Use dialogue to reveal information about your characters and the plot. Instead of telling the reader that a character is upset, show it through what the character says and how they say it.
In-Depth Character Description: Take a character from your story and describe them in detail. Show their personality through their actions, speech, and appearance, rather than direct statements.
Rewrite Telling Sentences: Take a piece of your own writing or a passage from a book and identify the "telling" sentences. Rewrite them in a way that "shows" instead.
Hope this helps! ✍(◔◡◔)

some golden guards + caleb
i wanted to take a break and do some character design of a few golden guards based off of some of the ones seen briefly in canon. i also drew hunter and caleb as references for faces and stuff. i tried to make them as similar as possible, but also looking very individual to one another. since belos claimed that hunter looks the most like caleb, i tried to stay true to that while keeping the other three looking similar but not quite as identical. anyways i love them <3 they’re like the most mentally ill family ever to me
these weren’t supposed to be real ocs or anything but then i ended up giving them names and backstories and so i wrote a little about them aaaand now im obsessed. i will try to make a full body ref for them, especially alistair and/or constance, if i have time
