Young people who didn’t grow up during the AOL/dial up era of internet, who don’t remember the dot com crash, and don’t remember the era pre Google think servers, bandwidth, moderation, User interface and so on are free and “advertising” is all it takes to fund. This simply isn’t true, we get cycles where advertising, venture capital, and speculative markets help covers costs of innovation and distribution but these aren’t sustainable.

Heck kids don’t even remember adpocalypse on YouTube in 2017, or the death of Vine. Tumblr is an exception not the rule, most sites fall off or are shuttered all together when money dries up.

I don’t want to have to keep learning new platforms I want sustainable systems. (with e-commerce we had to set up secure financial transactions and build out customer confidence, create new efficiencies in distribution/shipping/tracking; Pets.com being iconic or the DotCom bubble burst but Chewy.com being successful today)

User buy in is a more sustainable model than relying on advertising fully, nobody is forcing you to participate you still get to use the site for free because some other people are paying in, so quit whinging dumb babies.

yes i know we’re all excited about Pulling Together To Save The School, but i don’t… i don’t understand why so many people are suddenly forgetting what a corporate investor is. where did we even get the information that tumblr’s in debt? where did the $30mil figure come from? and why do you all think a crab day bake sale is going to do anything??
