The Company [...] come, at last, to the real merits of the case [for upholding their trade monopoly]. And here they assert, first, that the opening of the trade would be attended with no advantage—because it is a trade which admits not of any enlargement, either in the export or the import branch.
That a trade between two vast portions of the globe, differing widely in soil, climate, and productions, and accessible to one another by means of a moderate voyage, should at auy [sic] one moment be declared incapable of increase, must excite a gentle emotion of surprise, we imagine, in every man who is moderately acquainted with the natural priaciples of traffic,—with the physical qualities of the globe,—and the moral nature of man. What is the cause of trade?—That one country is peculiarly adapted to the production of one set of commodities, and another of another; and that, by the mutual exchange of those commodities, the comforts and accommodations of all are multiplied and increased. Hardly any two regions can be conceived, in this respect, more adapted to one another, by diversity of soil and climate, than Europe and the countries washed by the seas included in the Company’s monopoly, embracing the principal shores both of Africa and Asia.
The picture, however, which the Company now draws of this vast traffic, affords an amusing contrast to the representations in which they used formerly to indulge. After exhausting for ages all the powers of their rhetoric, in conveying to us the most lofty ideas of its importance, they tell us, all of a sudden, that it is, and ever must be, quite insignificant. The particulars and the causes of this opportune decay are equally curious and important.
It seems the cotton manufactures of England now rival the piece-goods, as they are called, of India. The necessity of the existing high duties on the latter, proves this statement to be fallacious. But the productive powers of the soil and trade of India are not limited to one sort of fabric; and fifty new articles, we doubt not, could be produced, were the vivifying powers of individual enterprise, and of augmenting capital, to be allowed their free operation. Of this indeed we have a striking proof and example in the culture of indigo, now so important an article in the cargoes from India; which is entirely the fruit of the intelligence, capital, and adventure of private merchants, under all the enormous disadvantages which the monopoly of the Company imposes upon them. The fact is, as may be proved undeniably by figures, that, under the cheap freight, the expedition and economy of private trade, all the more valuable productions of the soil—not to speak of the arts actual or possible of India—might be brought to Europe with a profit.
— Papers relating to the East-India Company's Charter, &c. [...] respecting the Renewal of their Exclusive Privileges; as laid before the Proprietors of East-India Stock, at their General Court, on the 25th of March 1812. In The Edinburgh Review, vol. 20, iss. 40; 1812

Shandi’s Writer’s Month Prompts!
Day 24: Word: Bow | Setting: Fantasy AU
I fully intend to get sappy as fuck with this so prepare yourselves~ XD
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Paul was the kind and handsome Prince of a faraway land. He was loved by all..except one. The one he was destined to spend the rest of his life with. For months he despaired. He rejected many suitors, claiming they were not ‘the one’. Soon he began to cut himself off from the Kingdom that adored him. Once the rumors started they were a constant source of torment to him. Soon he had grown tired of the gossip and decided to escape the palace to live in the enchanted forest. There among the kindly Fae Folk perhaps he would finally find peace.
Living in the forest was not an easy life but Paul learned to adapt. The melodic sounds of the animals and the faeries became a comfort to him. He would speak with the curious Faes who approached him. He would care for the animals who lived close to his cabin. The Faes would help him find food in exchange for his kindness. He learned to make his own clothes. He was happy in the forest. He was content.
~*~
One morning he decided to go to a hidden lake and waterfall the Faes had led him to so he could bathe. But the sound of men yelling and frantic whinnying soon shattered the quiet serenity of the forest. Paul quickly hid behind a big tree so he could observe unnoticed. Why were there people here? The answer became all too obvious. They were poachers, trying to capture a winged horse. The many beautiful colors of a galaxy colored its body. Its eyes sparkled like jewels. It was a fine prize for any poacher to capture. They had already succeeded in tying the horse’s legs together so it couldn’t buck, but they were still having trouble securing its wings. They were clearly distracted. The perfect opportunity to strike! With the aid of a group of angry Faes the poachers were quickly scared off thinking they had been cursed. After having a laugh Paul went to the horse, pulled a knife from his boot and cut the ropes binding its legs. “There..now go off and be free~” He and the horse shared a brief glance before it spread its wings and flew off into the sky.
~*~
Later that evening Paul was sitting on his porch watching the moon rise when a sudden gust of wind almost knocked him out of his chair. “W-what was--?! Ohh..it’s you~” The horse had returned, its skin covered in bright, twinkling stars so it could be seen despite the forest’s growing darkness. It spread its wings as a greeting making Paul smile. “I’d..hoped you would come back~ I’m glad you’re doing well despite almost being captured. A cage is no place for such a creature.”
“It occurred to me that I never thanked you for freeing me.”
Paul gasped. Did the horse just..speak to him? The voice chuckled.
“You seem surprised. You are in an enchanted forest after all. Nothing is as it seems.”
“Y-yes..I should’ve realized that after all the time I’ve spent living here.”
“Why did you come to live here?”
“I may have been royalty in my world but I was never free. I can find myself here. I can have my own life on my terms.”
“So you’ve come here to escape.”
“Is that so wrong? The Fae have been far kinder to me than anyone else..even my own parents. They have been trying to force me into marriage to produce an heir but I refuse to marry someone I don’t love!”
“No..it’s not wrong. You are looking for one who speaks to your heart. The one who is meant only for you.”
“You understand! I knew you would!”
“More than you think. May I..return tomorrow evening? Perhaps we can speak more of this.”
“I would like that~ Feel free to return at any time~”
“What is your name?”
“My name is Paul~ You?”
“Forgive me but my real name is unpronounceable by the human tongue. You..may call me Thomas.”
“Very well, Thomas~ I look forward to our next visit~”
“As do I~”

Things about  R6S!Child AU
I thought about scheduling which operator will become a child on which day and have a fully-fledged fics based on the schedule.
But then I think it would be more flexible to have the premise out here and decide who will turn into child. Like an open verse?
Five operators becoming child in the same week? Sure.
TEN operators becoming child in the same week? Double sure.
Only one become a child and the whole base acts like guardians? Yes.
Almost ALL of the operators become children and it’s up to the unfortunate one (1) adult!operator and recruits to look after them? Gosh darn diddly YES.
Man, does it have to be only a week? Why not a whole month? Months? Oh my god that chaos. The suffering.
Basically I don’t want to limit the possibilities of when and where the shenanigans will happen. There’s other things I’d like to suggest:
1. When the operators become a child, their memory goes back to the day when they were that age. I put 7 as an age to work with, but they can be at any age (maybe the minimum would be 18 months - that’s when most of toddlers start to walk. The oldest we could go can be like teens? Whatever floats your boat.)
2. When the operators return to adult after being their child-self, they remember those week of being a child. So embarrassment and/or heartfelt interactions are all theirs to digest. But then I guess this is also adaptable if the operator become too young to properly comprehend what’s going on around them, like 18 months would have it hard.
3. If a child!operator is faced against a stressful situation, they might remember the experiences that happened to them as an adult. Like a flashback (?) of a sort. (Materials for drama/hurt/comfort)
4. When the operator recovers from their childself into adultself, it will happen the same way the symptom came by. Through sleep. The operators who have virus within themselves will wake up in their childself, and the reverse will happen the same way.
I think that’s it! But it’s all for us to mold and shape. Peace out!

Many galaxies far more active than the Milky Way have enormous twin jets of radio waves extending far into intergalactic space. Normally these go in opposite directions, coming from a massive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. However, a few are more complicated and appear to have four jets forming an 'X' on the sky.
The galaxy PKS 2014-55, located 800 million light years from Earth, is classified as ‘X-shaped’ because of its appearance in previous relatively blurry images. The detail provided in this radio image obtained with the MeerKAT telescope indicates that its shape is best described as a ‘double boomerang’. Two powerful jets of radio waves, indicated in blue color, each extend 2.5 million light years into space (comparable to the distance between the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy, our nearest major neighbour). Eventually, they are ‘turned back’ by the pressure of tenuous intergalactic gas. As they flow back towards the central galaxy, they are deflected by its relatively high gas pressure into the shorter, horizontal, arms of the boomerang. The background image shows visible light from myriad galaxies in the distant universe. Adapted from W Cotton et al, MNRAS (2020). Credit: NRAO/AUI/NSF; SARAO; DES

Coaxial Cable Classification
MV ABC cable
There are two types of coaxial cables: thin cable (RG-58) and thick cable (RG-11). Thin cable: The diameter of the thin cable is 0.26 cm, and the maximum transmission distance is 185 meters. When used, it is connected with a 50Ω terminal resistor, T-type connector, BNC connector and network card. The price of the wire and the cost of the connector are relatively cheap, and there is no need to purchase a hub It is very suitable for setting up a small Ethernet network with relatively concentrated terminal equipment. The total length of the cable should not exceed 185 meters, otherwise the signal will be seriously attenuated. The impedance of the thin cable is 50Ω.
Tumblr media
Thick cable (RG-11) has a diameter of 1.27 cm and a maximum transmission distance of 500 meters. Because the diameter is quite thick, its elasticity is poor, and it is not suitable for erecting in a narrow indoor environment. Moreover, the production method of the RG-11 connector is relatively complicated, and it cannot be directly connected to the computer. It needs an adapter The converter is converted into an AUI connector, and then connected to the computer. Due to the stronger strength of the thick cable, the maximum transmission distance is longer than that of the thin cable. Therefore, the main purpose of the thick cable is to play the role of the network backbone and connect several networks formed by thin cables. The impedance of the thick cable is 75Ω.

5 Trends of Voice UI Design
At its core, the concept of interaction was always about communication. Human-Computer Interaction has never been about graphical user interfaces, which is why Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) are the future of user interface design.
An interface is just a medium people use to interact with a system—whether it’s a GUI, VUI or something else. So Why is VUI So Important? Two reasons:
1. Conversational interfaces are so fascinating because conversation is a form of communication everyone understands.
It’s a natural means of interaction. People associate voice communication with other people rather than with technology.
Users don’t need to learn to interpret any symbology or new terminology (the language of GUI), they can use English (or any other native language) to operate with a system. It doesn’t mean that users don’t have to learn how to use a system but the learning curve be reduced significantly.
2. User expectations are changing. According to Statista, 39% of millennials use voice search. This audience is ready to be the early adopters of VUI systems.
Top 5 VUI Trends
When it comes to designing VUI, voice interaction represents the biggest UX challenge for designers since the birth of the original iPhone. But the great news is that the most fundamental principles of UI design that we use when creating products with GUI are still applicable to VUI design. Below you can find a few trends that will shape VUI design in next decades.
1. VUI That Builds Trust
Trust helps to build a bridge between a person and a machine. If trust is absent, users will be unlikely to interact with a particular voice user interface.
The importance of the valid outcome (VUI should give the person understanding that s/he will receive exactly what s/he requested). It’s possible to achieve this goal by focusing on the following things:
Improving the accuracy of speech recognition (more sophisticated NLP algorithms).
Focusing on understanding the user’s intent (a reason for interacting in the first place). When users interact with a system, they have a particular problem they want to solve, and the goal of the designer is to understand what this problem is.
Providing meaningful error messages.
Crafting contextually driven flows. While it’s impossible to predict all commands that users might ask the system, designers need to at least design a user flow that is contextually driven. The system should anticipate users’ intent at each point of a conversation and provide users with information on what they can do next. For example, finding a restaurant near the user. When users search for a restaurant, the system should match exactly what the user is looking for.
The importance of user control (one of the 10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design by Jakob Nielsen is still applicable to VUI design).
The system should consider the natural limitations of a human brain (short-term memory limitations). The information provided by the system should be overwhelming. When people hear the system response, most users remember only the last phrase. Thus, it’s better to stay away from long phrases or providing a dozen different options while the user can remember just a couple of them at one time.
The system should react to a user request with appropriate feedback. This feedback should give users a full understanding of what the system is doing right now. For example, visual feedback lets the user know that the system is ready and listening; or in POD (Process of Doing). When a user sends a request to the system, the system shows a POD. POD isn’t a loading animation, it doesn’t just state the fact that users have to wait while a system is doing something, it provides valuable information of what the system does. For example, a POD for a command on pulling out a file from Dropbox might look like as someone search for a right file in storage.
2. Adaptive User Interface
An adaptive user interface (also known as AUI) is a user interface (UI) which adapts to the needs of the user or context. VUI of the future will adapt for users — the system will analyze all information it has about users (including the information about current mental state and health condition) and their current context to provide more relevant responses to user requests.
For example, if a user has a high blood pressure at the current moment and decides to set a meeting in 2 hours, a digital assistant might suggest avoiding that, or suggest lowering blood pressure with exercise before the meeting starts.
3. VUI That Conveys Personality
Visual designers have a lot of options to introduce the personality in graphical user interfaces – fonts, color, illustration, motion, just to name a few. But what about VUI? Designers can convey personality using language itself — by playing with words, voice, and tone. Speaking of voice, a voice is part of the persona and it shapes its identity. Once we’ve associated a voice with something, it becomes part of its identity. And we experience emotions when we interact with such an interface, just like we when we interact with real people. People want human-understandable voices — not a voice that sounds human, but a voice that speaks coherently human!
Bad example: Siri voice by Susan Bennett – the voice that sounds almost human but people still know that it’s a machine. You can’t really have a dialogue with Siri. While you can ask Siri something like, “What is the weather like today?” You can’t ask more sophisticated questions such as, “What should I wear today?” As a result, you don’t have deep feelings for Siri, you know it’s just a robot.
Good example: Samantha voice from the film Her — the voice that sounds coherently human and people can be in love with it.
4. From Narrow AI Towards General Intelligence
Human-computer interactions are shifting to conversation, but users expect more. Most of AI systems available today are still limited to Narrow AI — such systems use Machine Learning to solve a clearly defined (and, in most cases, way too narrow) problem. Narrow AIs have zero knowledge outside of their training data. It means that when a user wants to solve a slightly different problem, or the problem itself evolves, the system won’t be able to solve it and it’ll respond with something like, “I don’t understand.” So that you, as a user, face a wall.
In comparison to Narrow AI, General Intelligence is not limited to narrow domains. The concept of learning is at the foundation of GI systems — the fundamental difference between Narrow AI and General AI is that the General Intelligence systems learn without being expressly programmed (machines learn by themselves). GI system uses two types of learning — reinforcement learning (when a system uses all available information to solve a particular user problem) and supervised learning (when a system needs user assistance to solve a problem for the first time). Another difference is that a General AI system can learn to utilize other AI for general and specific purposes. As a result, different Machine Learning models can be trained dependently and work cooperatively. An advanced NLP GI system is able to learn from the first attempt by combining and processing information from multiple different data sources.
5. Impact on Society
Widespread acceptance of VUI systems. Improving the quality of VUI AI-based systems will lead to better user engagement. The relationships between human and computer will be interactive and collaborative — people and computers will work together. This will impact society — just imagine that in ten years, you’ll walk into the house and just talk and control all kinds of machines.
This future will be with omnipresent AI: As users, we’ll trust AI even with the most important decisions such as “What school should I choose for my children?” VUI will improve the quality of life of older people and people with disabilities.
Conclusion
“The best interface is no interface“ is a famous quote of Golden Krishna, the author of the book The Best Interface Is No Interface. He and many other designers believe that people don’t want more time with screens, in fact they want less. Thus, technology should stop celebrating screen-based solutions. And it’ll happen relatively soon — the interactions of the future won’t be made of buttons.
With the rise of computer processing power, we’ll have more systems that will be able to calculate up to 1000 steps in 1 second. A user and a machine will work together, enabling General Intelligence.
