It’s a perfect morning for a hike.
The chill dusts Yaku’s nose as a soft winter kiss, his hot breathing tearing up his throat as he pushes onwards.
His thighs strain with pleasant effort, the slope harsh and unforgiving under his well broken-in boots, a stone breaking free of the thin, frozen layer of snow to bounce down behind him. They're all familiar sensations, worn into his skin almost as deeply as the court.
With one difference.
A gasp heaves behind Yaku. He turns back to his companion, who is bent over, hands on his knees.
“Wow, you really have left yourself go, huh?”
“Shut —“ here one of Kuroo’s hands lifts weakly, flagging his words. “— the fuck —“
“I’m waiting.”
“Up.”
The last line is delivered with a laboured expulsion of breath. Kuroo’s hand drops back to his knee, his gulping of air audible to even where Yaku is standing. He grins.
Kuroo had always been a single step faster than him in high school, and even in the early years of university he could hold his own; it’s nice to get the upper hand for once.
Yet something needles at Yaku; a slight twinge in his knee. A reminder that he, too, is getting older.
“I’m sorry,” Kuroo continues, straightening up. “That I can’t keep up with an Olympian while having an actual career.”
An actual career, huh?
Kuroo probably hadn’t meant it like that, but Yaku becomes aware of a pit in his gut, one that had been growing since he hit thirty. It seemed to swallow good moments with the overwhelming knowledge of time, and Yaku hadn’t adjusted to it yet.
“Your career is literally making my career a viable thing.”
“Semantics.”
"I don't think you know what that word means."
"I don't think you know either."
Yaku flips up his middle finger at him, and Kuroo cracks a grin, trudging up alongside Yaku.
“I’m good to go for a while longer.”
“I can carry you, if you’d like.”
The answering glare that Kuroo gives him makes Yaku grin again, the movement of his cheeks feeling welcome, as if dislodging a layer of frost.
The camera shutter noise rings out alone in the deserted, slumbering mountains.
“Shame Kai couldn’t see this,” Yaku mentions as he sends the photo to him.
“Yeah, I’m sure he’s devastated,” Kuroo says. “Being flown in to Australia to consult on Japanese flora there instead of waking up at an obscene hour for a hike must be so awful for him.”
“His girlfriend got a ticket too, didn’t she?”
“Yeah.” Kuroo sighs, resting his hands on his hips. “Well, fiancé now. He had a plus one, and I can't believe that he brought his fiancé instead of say, one of his best friends of…”
He scrunches his brows, hesitating. Yaku wants to laugh.
“Don’t strain your—“
“Eighteen years!”
“There you go,” Yaku says encouragingly, and Kuroo shoots him a death glare.
“Don’t pretend that you were any better at me at math.”
Sticking out his tongue, Yaku winks at him. "At least I'm not the one who called Akaashi at two in the morning, crying over his project finance homework."
"He told you that?! And I wasn't crying, just on the verge of tears -"
"Like that's any better."
It works, as it always had. Kuroo doesn't notice Yaku speeding up, doesn't notice how they move faster when sunk into arguing. Maybe he does, and chooses to say nothing.
The sunrise is a haze of orange and pink, and Yaku thinks that it looks beautiful. It shines against the snow-patched hillsides, throwing up brilliant glares as it spreads across the mountains, claiming them for the morning. Here and there, a grey cluster of rocks emerge from the snow, as if waking up.
He glances across at Kuroo. Kuroo, who had agreed to take a day off of the work he loved so dearly to join Yaku at ass o’clock in the morning to clamber up a mountain to catch a sunrise.
He’d sounded tired on the phone when Yaku had called, just at the end of his workday, just long enough for Kuroo to run into his boss’ office and tell him that he needed the day tomorrow — yes, he apologised for the short notice, yes, he had everything in order — and then returning to Yaku to curse him out for forcing him to do that.
Yaku had asked why he wasn’t the boss yet, how come his career was flatlining, and Kuroo’s swearing at him had increased at a rate Yaku hadn’t thought possible before.
Yet he’s here.
“I missed this,” Yaku says.
“Yeah,” Kuroo agrees. His tone is a little wistful, softened by the sight in front of them. “I can’t remember the last time I went hiking.”
He's here, with his hands set on his hips, his chest driving out with each hard breath. There's unmistakable satisfaction in the curl of his lips.
“Better than lazing about on the beach, huh?” Yaku comments, moving closer to elbow Kuroo in the side. “Glad to hear you’ve seen the light.”
“Hey, that was not me saying that mountains are better.”
“Not yet.”
Yaku grins up at him, and he sees the edges of Kuroo’s lips curve upwards in response, despite trying to cling onto the mask of annoyance. His gaze wanders upwards, over Kuroo’s rough cheeks, a day’s worth of black stubble sprouting up, to the almost invisible scar on his cheekbone left from one of Fukunaga’s “inventions,” to rest on the grey bags beneath his eyes.
Cradled in the delicate glow of the sunrise, Tetsurou feels familiar and strange, all at once.
The pit stretches its muscles inside Yaku’s gut again, the pit that consumes his friends’ lives and leaves men in their places that Yaku only half-knows. His absence had been a choice.
He doesn’t regret it, but he acknowledges the painful consequences.
Swallowing, he turns back to the sunrise, and thinks he feels a wave of warmth from it. Kuroo is still a bachelor. Yaku has waited over a decade, expecting him to be one of those consequences, one that he paid the moment he chose to pursue volleyball professionally. He wets his dry, cracked lips, and glances up at Kuroo again.
Kuroo’s face is awash with an orange tint, and there are folds Yaku doesn’t recognise, smile lines faded into his skin, his bone structure just a fraction more prominent than before. Yaku wants to relearn all of it — maybe even better than before. His eyes are creased up in the way they always did when he was considering something; his tongue working within his mouth.
“I’d have brought you here sooner if I knew this is what made you speechless,” he says, and Kuroo’s removed, thoughtful expression vanishes. It's replaced by a flicker of a fondness, a momentary splinter before his usual laid-back expression settles in.
Instead of a snarky retort, Kuroo only leans his forearm on Yaku’s shoulder. He's heavy. Yaku can feel his body heat, revved up from the walk, radiating against his side.
“You’d get bored without my quick wit,” Kuroo proclaims. “We can't ever go to a mountain peak at sunrise again. Only beaches from now on, I think.”
He flashes a smile down at Yaku, and Yaku, after climbing up a tough trail for two hours, now, only now, feels woozy. He wasn’t a stranger to how Kuroo makes him feel. He’d been ignoring it for years.
Consequences.
Yaku looks down at Kuroo’s hand, jutting past his shoulder, dangling in the air. He’d stripped off his gloves at some point during their hike, and the tips of his fingers are tinged with a dusty pink, just visible through the brown. They’re lined. Yaku thinks of Kuroo telling him how his last relationship didn’t work out, that they wanted different things.
For the first time in a long time, Yaku stares at a Japanese sunrise and thinks of coming home.
Bending his elbow, he reaches up and takes Kuroo’s warm hand in his, interlacing their fingers. Beside him, Kuroo shifts his weight; taking more off of Yaku.
One last time, Yaku upturns his face to meet Kuroo’s gaze. His whole body is buzzing with the risk he’d just taken, but Kuroo’s steady eye contact grounds him; reminds him that they’d be alright, no matter what.
He inhales the crisp air, tasting a new day.
Waits.
“You’re serious?”
Kuroo’s voice is low, stripped of all and any teasing edge.
Yaku nods.
“I’m serious.”

James Allan Mollison was born on April 19th 1905 in Glasgow.
Graeme Obree, Chris Hoy and a certain steam train have all bee called The Flying Scotsman in their time, but the original title goes to a man who actually did fly, Jim Mollison.
Jim would go on to become a pioneering aviator, breaking records for long distance flights. His marriage to fellow aviator Amy Johnson also saw them lauded as the golden couple during their time together.
Born the only child of Hector Alexander Mollison, a consultant engineer, and Thomasina Macnee Addie. He was educated at The Glasgow Academy and Edinburgh Academy and took an early interest in flying and obtaining his Royal Air Force (RAF) Short Service Commission at 18, he was the youngest officer in the service, and upon completion of training was posted to India, flying on active service in Waziristan.
At the age of 22, Mollison became a flying instructor at Central Flying School (CFS), again setting the record for being the youngest in this role. Shortly after, he transferred to the RAF Reserve and devoted his time to civil aviation. In 1928-29, he served as an instructor with the South Australian Aero Club in Adelaide, leaving that position to become a pilot with Eyre Peninsular Airways and Australian National Airways.
In July-August 1931, Mollison set a record time of eight days, 19 hours for a flight from Australia to England, and in March 1932, a record for flying from England to South Africa in 4 days, 17 hours flying a de Havilland Puss Moth.
Mollison eventually served in the ATA Air Transport Auxiliary in the Second World War. In June 1941 Mollison and an ATA crew delivered Cunliffe-Owen OA-1 G-AFMB to Fort Lamy, Chad. The aircraft was fitted out as a personal transport for General De Gaulle.
Mollison was feted in London and New York, and could lead the life he had always wanted. “I am a night bird,” he once said. “Life and enjoyment begin when daylight fades. Cocktail bars and clubs, music, beautiful women— that’s living. Daylight comes to me as an interval for sleeping until an afternoon drink helps to bring on another evening.” His autobiography was called “Playboy of the Air”.
When Mollison and Amy Jonson married in 1932 the press were delighted, they were dubbed The Flying Sweethearts by the press and public. . The match was was perfect for the publicity machine, and the two of them set about devising new aviation records: in 1933 they flew together from Wales to New York and had a ticker-tape reception in Wall Street. But marriage did not last long or end well. It has sometimes been assumed that the match was a simple career move on Mollison's part: certainly he did not halt his relationships with other women. Nor did it limit his drinking. As I said earlier, he got the tag “ the Flying Scotsman” but those close to him called him “Brandy Jim”.
As well as his Playboy lifestyle and heavy drinking Jim Mollison was also quick with his fists, and a manager from the Grosvenor House Hotel was reported as saying ” We've had the most awful night here. Jim Mollison and Amy Johnson had a fearful row and he's beaten her up. The bathroom looks like a slaughterhouse.” The marriage officially ended in 1938.
Mollison kept flying, and – like Johnson – flew in a non-combat role in WWII. Both of them flew in the Air Transport Auxiliary. Johnson died in 1941 after baling out of aircraft. Mollison had at least one close escape, when his plane was shot up, but survived the war.
Mollison later settled in London and ran a public house. He married Maria Clasina E. Kamphuis in 1949 at the Maidenhead Register Office. Mollison continued to abused alcohol and in 1953, the Civil Aviation Authority Medical Board revoked his pilot's licence. The couple separated but Maria bought the Carisbrooke Hotel in Surbiton for him – a temperance hotel.
Suffering from acute alcoholism, he was admitted to The Priory, Roehampton, southwest London, where he died on 30 October 1959, the official cause of death was pneumonia, but unofficially it was thought to be alcoholic epilepsy.
The pics a pretty self explanatory, the colour one is titled Sweethearts and is from Italian paper Il Mattino Illustrato and shows Mollison kissing his wife of 6 weeks goodbye before he set off in 1932 to become the first pilot to fly solo east-to-west across the Atlantic from Ireland to Canada.

Planning the Perfect Whale Watching Adventure: A Complete Guide
Witnessing the majesty of whales in their natural habitat ranks among life's most awe-inspiring experiences. These magnificent marine mammals—some weighing up to 200 tons and reaching lengths of 100 feet—capture our imagination and remind us of nature's grandeur. A well-planned whale watching trip can create memories that last a lifetime, but requires thoughtful preparation to maximize your chances of meaningful encounters.
Choosing Your Destination
Whale watching opportunities exist worldwide, but locations vary dramatically in species diversity, encounter probability, and experience quality. Consider these premier destinations based on your preferences:
The Azores (Portugal) offers summer sightings of sperm, sei, and blue whales against volcanic backdrops.
Hervey Bay (Australia) provides intimate humpback whale experiences during their August-October migration, with mother-calf pairs often approaching boats.
Vancouver Island (Canada) features reliable orca (killer whale) viewing, with resident pods following predictable patterns that local operators understand intimately.
Monterey Bay (California) boasts remarkable species diversity year-round due to its submarine canyon, attracting blue, humpback, gray whales and numerous dolphin species.
Baja California (Mexico) provides gray whale encounters in winter lagoons, where these curious giants often approach small boats for interaction.
Kaikoura (New Zealand) offers year-round sperm whale viewing against spectacular mountain backdrops, alongside abundant dolphin populations.
Timing Is Everything
Research your whale watching tours destination's peak season carefully—whale migrations follow precise patterns tied to feeding and breeding cycles. For instance, gray whales visit Baja California from December through April, while Maine's humpback viewing peaks from mid-April through October.
Within these seasons, consider these optimal timing strategies:
Book mid-week excursions when boats carry fewer passengers
Choose morning departures when seas are typically calmer
Allow multiple days at your destination to accommodate weather cancellations
Schedule trips around new moon phases for better underwater visibility
Selecting the Right Tour Operator
Not all whale watching experiences are created equal. Research potential operators using these criteria:
Ethical practices: Look for companies that follow responsible wildlife viewing guidelines, maintaining appropriate distances and limiting viewing time with any single animal.
Naturalist expertise: Operators employing knowledgeable marine biologists or trained naturalists enhance educational value considerably.
Vessel type: Consider whether you prefer a larger, more stable boat or a smaller vessel offering closer water-level perspectives. Each provides different advantages depending on your priorities.
Group size: Intimate experiences with fewer passengers often justify premium pricing, allowing better viewing positions and personalized interpretation.
Success rate: Reputable companies honestly disclose their sighting probabilities rather than making unrealistic guarantees.
Reviews: Look beyond star ratings to read detailed customer experiences, particularly regarding the operator's behavior around wildlife.
Preparing for Your Excursion
Enhance your experience with thoughtful preparation:
Dress appropriately: Layer clothing regardless of shore temperatures—open water conditions average 15°F cooler than land. Waterproof outer layers protect against spray.
Combat motion sickness: Consider medication taken before departure (consult your doctor), pressurized wristbands, or natural ginger supplements.
Photography equipment: Bring cameras with zoom capabilities, extra batteries, and waterproof protection. However, balance photography with immersive observation—experiencing the moment often proves more valuable than perfect documentation.
Field guides: Familiarize yourself with local species before departure to appreciate subtle behaviors and markings during brief encounters.
Questions: Prepare thoughtful questions for naturalists during quieter periods between sightings.
Beyond Sightings
While whale encounters remain your primary objective, broaden your appreciation to include the complete marine ecosystem. Seabirds, smaller cetaceans like dolphins and porpoises, and even microscopic plankton play crucial roles in the environment supporting these magnificent creatures.
The best whale watching experiences combine the thrill of sightings with deeper understanding of marine conservation challenges. Many operators participate in citizen science programs, contributing sighting data to research initiatives that inform protection efforts.
By choosing responsible operators and approaching your trip with proper preparation, you not only maximize your enjoyment but contribute to sustainable wildlife tourism that benefits local economies while supporting whale conservation. The resulting experience—that moment Whale Watching in LoretoBest Whale Watching in Baja Mexicoact before gracefully diving beneath the waves—creates a connection with nature that inspires lasting appreciation for our oceans and their remarkable inhabitants. https://graywhalewatching.com/

The best advice I have ever received is, “Friends are for a reason and a season”. Sort of.
A history…
When I was in my small anglo-catholic school I struggled to understand and be understood by other kids. I would deeply love and care about my friends, only for them to decide I was weird, or that other people were more fun. After the loss of a friend group in year 9 that I found devastating, my mum told me “Friends are for a reason and a season”. They come and go in cycles and that’s normal and natural, not because you are bad at being a friend, but because their season has come to a close.
A few months ago, my partner of three years fell out of love with me. I lost a potential future version of my life that I had come to care about deeply and considered as my only option in that breakup. Realistically, that version of my life was very (statistically) unlikely to come to be. I was his first relationship and sexual partner. We met at 18, and people change an awful lot between then and 21. But, still, I had never approached our relationship as being for “a reason and a season”. I was going to change my career plans around him. I was picturing the entirety of my life with him there. His star wars lego and DVDs mixed in with my CDs and philosophy books on the shelves of a living room well into my 70s. The point, to me, was that I loved him and, therefore, I would have to sacrifice things I could want to continue to have him.
The main lesson I have learnt since then is this “Relationships are for a reason and a season”. He was exactly what I needed at the time, he was my best friend, and he taught me a lot about healthy love. But I want to be an academic, I don’t want to go back to my hometown, and I don’t want to feel a need to appear less queer. For those reasons, the season of my life with him in it needed to end. He had moved back to our hometown and was expecting me to, too, after my degree. I want to study postgrad, but not really somewhere commutable from home, and I don’t want to live there. And unfortunately, he struggled not to view me as a girl.
The point…
All of this to say, the way that we treat platonic vs romantic relationships is bizarre. This is largely down to views about monogamy. Romantic love is contractual in a way that platonic love is not. There are set ways that a romantic relationship is imagined to have to end 1) a breakup 2) death. Often, breakups seem to be a pseudo-death. A death of a potential future you. Pretending your ex simply doesn't exist anymore.
Whereas there are less harsh ways we lose friends with less sharp consequences on the way we view ourselves. Sometimes, one of you moves away; you slowly fall out of contact. You would meet them for coffee and have a catch-up if they were in town though. This is how my breakup should’ve been conceptualised. Our futures did not need to be so entwined. We have separate lives to live because we are separate people. When my best friend moved to Australia for a year, they didn’t consult me, they needn’t. I will still be here when they get back; I still love them, and we speak every day. I am happy for them, I am proud of them. But when I wanted to go to study in Canada for 4 months over a year back, I didn’t even apply because my partner said he would find it hard and painful.
I am glad that my ex is in his home, working a job he loves. I am glad I never held him back. But he was holding me back. I felt it was him or my career, and I had a duty to him if I really loved him. In reality, I had picked up a mainstream view about romantic relationships being the be-all-end-all that, even if you had asked me at the time, I would’ve said I didn’t believe in ideologically.
When I think about ex-friends (whom I don't have around anymore because we grew apart, rather than because there was mistreatment) I am happy to have known them, I am curious about their life now, I don't pretend they no longer exist, I love the bits of myself that are there because of them, I am not jealous of their current or future friends. I feel the same about my ex-partner.
So maybe I took my mum’s advice too literally. And maybe I was being too black and white about what is reasonable compromise vs detrimental self-sacrifice. And maybe I was naive. But I have learnt my lesson now. My life will be my own. I will continue to hold platonic love to a very high standard. But romantic love need not be any different in terms of shaping my life.
Anyway, isn’t it bittersweet when your parents are right?
