"she'd go up to piltover dressed in this frilly, ruffly dress, find the biggest mansion she could, then she'd put on the waterworks, tears and snot all over. when someone would come outside to see what's wrong she'd say she was lost. 'course the suckers would take her in and call the enforcers-- but by the time they got off the horn she'd be gone-- and so would as much of their silver as she could carry." jinx giggles.

you grin, looking over at your wife. "how old were you?"

"i dunno. i started when i was five but i kept at it until i was like twelve." she says with a shrug. you laugh.

"she tried to teach me and vi how to do it when we were kids, but i could never get the crying right, and vi refused to wear the dress." jinx chuckles.

you smile, kissing sevika's cheek and stacking the plates on the table. "jinx, i want the two of you to stay here until shit up top blows over." you say. sevika huffs beside you, but she doesn't say anything to revoke the offer. jinx pouts, her pink eyes fluttering back and forth as she tries to think of a way to worm her way out of the request. "where the fuck else are you gonna go?" you ask. "half of zaun is looking to turn you in for some cash, and there's a fuckin' team of enforcers gassing the streets to find you. c'mon. take it as my thank you for fixing sevika's new arm."

finally, jinx relents with a gusty sigh. "fine. we'll stay." she says. sevika grunts and takes the plates to the kitchen. when she's gone from sight, jinx whispers. "thank you."

you smile and shoot the kid a wink, walking to the living room to make up the pull out couch for her and isha. you'll make them both bathe tomorrow-- tonight, they need sleep.

isha doesn't stir as jinx settles her under the covers, and before you can even turn the lights off for her, jinx is passed out beside isha, one of her arms curled around the girl.

you chuckle, pulling the blankets over jinx's shoulders before heading to the bathroom.

sevika stumbles in as you're drawing up a bath.

"get in." you gesture to the tub. sevika raises an eyebrow at you.

"you're awfully bossy tonight." she says, slowly working to strip her clothes. you chuckle, holding her hand as she steps into the tub, then gently helping her arrange her new arm so it doesn't get in the water.

sevika sighs, her eyes falling shut and her shoulder slumping as the steam and bubbles envelop her.

"who were you all fighting?" you ask, dragging a stool over to the tub.

sevika chuckles. "vi's an enforcer now. jinx wanted to kill 'er. didn't work."

you snort and shake your head, starting to lather up a washcloth. "poor jinx." you say. sevika quirks an eyebrow at you and you shrug. "lost silco and found out her sister joined the force that killed her own parents within the span of a week. same week she became a mother, too." you say.

sevika snorts a bit.

"isha's a cute kid, eh?" she asks. you chuckle.

"you're a sucker. 's so cute." you tease, leaning forward and kissing her head as you scrub her back.

sevika sighs, leaning into your touch. "you take such good care'a me." she whispers.

you chuckle. "'s sorta my job isn't it? 's why you gave me my ring?"

sevika's responding grin is dazzling, her flesh arm reaching out of the tub to grab your own, fondling the ring she'd given you so many years ago. "guess so, yeah." she whispers, kissing your hand.

you take your time washing her off, massaging her shoulders and scrubbing her scalp, waiting until she's sunk down so far under the water's surface that only her nose is sticking out before pulling the plug and helping her get up.

Y/N L/N steps up to the small green and then turns to the camera. "I just want to formally apologise to Lily in advance for messing this up."

With another try, and some additional tips from Carlos, she manages to get the ball to bounce onto the lonely island with the pin on it. "I guess that's the best I'll do. Did I win? What did I win? Eternal glory? I'll take it!"

[Excerpt: Post-Semi Final Press Conference]

"ESPN here. Of course it's never fun to lose, but is there a part of you that feels relieved perhaps, knowing you can now fully focus on your individual tournaments?"

Jack shifts forward. "I mean there was only one other match to go. I'd have been more than happy to make that sacrifice and see if I could win two titles, instead of just the one."

Y/N nods along. "If we hadn't wanted to take this all the way, we wouldn't have committed to the tournament altogether."

"Hi, I'm with SkySports. Jack, you'll be facing Carlos Alcaraz next in your individual semi-final. Considering Y/N's history with Alcaraz, have you asked her for any tips on how to best handle him?"

There's some huffing in the room, and Jack seems to be slightly lost for words. "I - uh, no. I have not asked her for advice."

"And who will you be rooting for, Y/N?" The interviewer continues, making Y/N all but roll her eyes. "I think you know the answer to that, seems pretty obvious to me. But I'm mostly rooting for us to get better questions."

Another interviewer waves their hand. "Hi, I'm with Tennis News. Y/N, you could be just one step closer to your Season Slam if you manage to win this week. How do you switch between this loss and the next potential victory?"

Y/N smiles at that. "Well, I credit my team for it and my family and friends, first of all. But also, if you really want to be a champion - you have to learn how to take the losses. I think in this sport, but also probably in others, that to be a true professional athlete, it means you need to become good at losing. You can't be precious about them, or too superstitious or anything. Because you'll lose so much more than you'll win across your entire career. So if I couldn't deal with losing, I wouldn't be able to fight for the wins. Or at least, that's what I try to tell myself. I'm not always successful at it, but so far I haven't smashed a racket here," she jokes. "Thanks for the lovely question. More of that please."

There's a scene where Danny transforms back to human after being only Phantom for a while and he gets hit with gender dysphoria and being human dysphoria at the same time, oof.

Stalking Astronauts: Gotham's Latest Social Media Craze! by @tachvintlogic || 54k Complete multi-chap. This is a really interesting twist on the usual DPxDC adoption trope where Danny is afraid of being adopted, and he doesn't need to be because he's an adult and a successful astronaut. Unfortunately because of his facial masculinization surgery, everyone thinks he looks a Wayne.

Barely Surviving in a World Antithetical to My Existence by DomesticatedOpossum and Vampirenote13 || 67k Incomplete multi-chap. Danny gets isekaied to Gotham and helped by Constantine and the bats eventually. I like that both Danny and Tim are trans in this.

DPxDC thing: If you've seen videos of zookeepers like gently hold the hand of a big cat and they're so very chill with it, that's the vibe. A Big Dangerous Fella is letting you hold their hand and check out their built in knives? they trust you completely. Imagine a batfam feller just casually inspecting Phantom's hands while every instinct in them is like "this is a big Fuck Off I Can Kill You creature." and also the human urge to bond with creatures that look cute and are pettable.

Hello again! Welcome back to the theory zone. Last time, we discussed the basic facts we know about Very Important People's Bianca (the original post is here, and here's a version with great additional analysis from @/alittlevillainy).

This time around, I want to focus in on specifically Bianca's relationship with her step-parent, Host!Vic -- the facts, the paradoxes, and even some hints we can pull from Vic (the human comedian's) past work.

So... here's what we know so far!

The Host is borderline obsessed with Bianca. They bring her up incessantly -- most episodes have at least one reference to Bianca, and repeat guests (so far, this means Anna and Jacob) have made comments about this apparent fixation (see: "I don't care about your boy"). One interpretation is that this is a status thing for them. Having a stepdaughter establishes them as someone with power over another person on set even when the cameras cut. This behavior (always "my stepdaughter", or "my stepdaughter, Bianca") also doubles as 'reminding' Bianca of the dynamic between the two of them and reestablishing their control over her.

The Host relies on Bianca. At the end of the Leighanna-Jean episode, when Leighanna is applying lipstick to the Host, we get the following interaction:

This is vulnerable! This is open! The Host is trying so hard and Bianca "will tell them the truth."

3. The Host feels bullied by Bianca and expresses a desire to be rid of her. In Jasper and Casper's interview, the Host talks about their longing to throw Bianca into the sea, like Jasper and Casper's children. In Martha Tops and Lucian Azathoth's episode, the Host seeks a solution to the "bullying" they face from Bianca. "She's so mean to me," they say; they are also ready to sacrifice her until they realize what that might entail ("planes that the mind cannot comfortably conceive" and so on), at which point they respond, "We'll keep her for now," with the implication that they are 'keeping her' as a favor to her father more than anything else.

4. When the Host mentions people they'd (like to?) "sit and talk with" to Jukebox, they specifically mention their mother and Bianca. Their mother seems to be a source of pain and abandonment (see the Zeke episode's "sometimes your mom hates you even when you're not rocks"). So what does this shared context imply about the Host's relationship with Bianca...? Well, I'm not quite sure, actually. But there's something there. To me this line implies that they feel like they should have a closer relationship with Bianca.

5. Bianca genuinely seems "done" with the Host in her brief on-screen appearance. This is valuable to note because of how biased the Host's account of their relationship is; I don't necessarily trust them when they describe Bianca as 'bullying' them, for example, because that would require a power dynamic between them that is opposite of what we see on set.

So there are a lot of gloriously, humanly contradictory notes in here.

As we just discussed, the Host views Bianca as a bully, despite the fact that they have power over her both in the home and the workplace, and despite the fact that Bianca is apparently genial enough to be well-liked by her coworkers.

The Host is fixated in some degree on Bianca -- whether that's personal or just related to her role as stepdaughter. So, is this obsession based on a desire to heal their relationship? According to the Martha Tops and Lucian Azathoth episode, nope.

The Host is like a pathetic wet bird with a broken wing who is constantly making cries for help. This is just true. They're also deeply off-putting and weird -- but still, when I put myself in Bianca's shoes I have trouble imagining why she wouldn't try in some way to "save them". So what gives? How has the Host hurt them -- or was their marriage to her dad enough to create this rift? (This one is a bit of a reach, admittedly, because it relies on Bianca being a normal and good person, but I think about it a lot.)

The Host trusts and relies upon Bianca despite everything else. Indeed, it seems like Bianca is the only person they trust and rely upon.

Where does this leave us? With a lot of questions and a messy, messy relationship. Below the cut I'm going to share something a little different that opens the way to new theories: a sketch written by Vic Michaelis (the human comedian) that has some hauntingly familiar elements.

This is where we get into the groundless speculation and entirely non-canonical realm of "fucked up if true". So, uh, proceed at your own risk? Nothing that follows is real, but I think it's fun!

Okay, buckle up! I've attached two videos here. They're different versions of the same sketch: a shorter version with higher audio quality (plus a Hot Bill Summer cameo that made me giggle enough that I couldn't stand to cut it out), and a longer version with lower audio quality. So, here we've got a bride on her wedding day speaking to her (offscreen) future stepdaughter, who is upset. We learn:

The stepdaughter and the bride are the same age (specifically born three months apart).

The stepdaughter and bride were childhood best friends.

The bride was previously engaged to her future stepson.

That's a familiar setup, right? The crucial difference between this sketch and VIP is that the sketch turns on the inherent weirdness of the childhood friends dynamic, while VIP has left the nature of the Vic-Bianca relationship mysterious. So -- are we seeing a slowburn reveal of the same setup from this sketch (which Vic knows is funny, to the point that they've included it in their character reel and have performed it across the years in different formats and to fit different lengths)? I mean, in all honesty, I'm... not sure.

The points against:

This sketch is dark! It just is! It's funny, don't get me wrong, but I don't know how well it would go over with the Dropout audience.

The Host having had a childhood best friend doesn't gel with our understanding of the character.

This setup rests on the "bride" character living in more or less the same place from the age of 12 to about 22; the Host moved around a lot as a child.

The points in favor:

It would explain so much of the weirdness and resentment between Bianca and the Host. The reliance, the longing, the obsession. If this was once a close relationship turned poisonous, suddenly things start to click into place.

2. newly-back to the tour, belinda bencic continued her incredible return run by claiming the abu dhabi title, ousting defending champ elena rybakina.

3. in a freak (although not unexpected) turn of events, the top american seeds of the dallas open (including defending champion tommy paul) crashed out before the quarters.

4. “european-imposter-why-is-he-in-texas” casper ruud reached the final, but was ultimately defeated by canadian darkhorse denis shapovalov. maybe it was the fact that his bf won a title the week before, but shapo went on an insane run, ousting the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th seeds.

5. carlos alcaraz arrived cold and freezing in rotterdam, netherlands to a R2 match against none other than botic van de zandschulp.

6. bozocaraz -> goatcaraz won his first indoor hc title, became the youngest atp 500 champion, and first player to have one on all surfaces.

7. a diva crashed the doha courts, and by diva i mean a cat.

20. okay another serious topic: emma radacanu’s stalker. the same man followed her all the way from her tournament in SINGAPORE, and approached her in dubai. absolutely sickening behavior.

21. dubai continued the trend of many upsets. particularly, clara tauson—of taking aryna sabalenka to a tiebreak at AO + auckland winner fame—faced aryna again and WON. she also defeated karolina muchova on route to the final. more on that below.

22. everyone’s favorite 17 year old mirra andreeva made history in dubai, becoming the youngest wta 1000 winner ever. and she did it in the biggest way possible: defeating iga swiatek and elena rybakina in the QFs and SFs. she’s now made her top ten debut. again, the next gen is bright bright bright!

23. madi keys entered the top five without playing since AO. i’m not mad about it.

24. surprisingly calm andrey rublev won doha and sebastian baez defended rio.

25. enjoy this moment between felix and bublik.

26. learner tien defeated acapulco first seed z*verv (who hilariously has had a nightmare of a golden swing) for his second win over a top ten player. next gen!

27. speaking of acapulco, multiple players suddenly withdrew due to what appeared to be mass food poisoning.

28. and finally: the WTA debuted their new rebrand. very green and very underwhelming (at least their logo, i do like their player concept videos)

I don't think I ever really said what it was about, so here's some explanation.

“Buck is fine” is part of the werewolf!gale au and takes place during stalag up until just before his fight with Bucky. It's hurt and no comfort, with Buck trying to convince himself he's fine and keep minimizing what's happening to him as he takes care of everyone else.

Once he arrives at the camp, Buck is quickly buried under all the responsibilities and things he has to do: take care of his men (his pack), help the colonel run the camp, hide his werewolf status ( or risk having his entire barracks executed and him being taken away for experimentation), take part in the countless meetings with the guards who have taken a liking to him, and when Bucky arrives, take care of his mate.

Both Bucky and Buck have had horrible experiences before coming to camp, but where Bucky shows it more, Buck hides it and bottles it all up. They're both wounded but where usually they can help each other, here they're so disconnected and wounded that they keep pushing each other away and so aking things worse.

Add to that seeing his mate injured, his pack scared and in danger all the time, a not so good childhood and the 'joy' of having heightened senses when you're not in friendly territory, his instincts are in overdrive 24/7 and things keep adding up but it's okay, he's fine.

(There's no wolf!gale in this fic, only human!gale this time)

Here's some insight into his mindset

Buck feels his stomach trying to digest itself, he feels it in his bones, this endless sensation, as if he'd never be full again, as if he were eating himself. He thought he'd never experience this sensation again, thought he'd left it behind in Casper, next to the harsh words, the biting touches and the cold sensation. He should have known better. His stomach had long since stopped growling, kept quiet, knowing that growling would do nothing, nothing to help or change, nothing to calm the hunger in his body, the hunger in his stomach, that endless agonizing sensation. He looks at his plate, water with turnip, he's lucky his plate actually contains a piece of turnip, Major Privileges they say. It leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. How does being a major help his men, how does it help them when they're starving, wounded, cold and dying? The soup is salty and not very nutritious, but it fills his stomach a little, filling him up until the next meal. Isn't it funny to think that even if he had a better nutritious meal, he certainly wouldn't be able to keep it down. At least, unlike others, he knows this feeling, he knows how to live with it. He looks up, seeing his boys crowded around the rickety wooden table, stacked against each other to try and keep the deadly cold away from their weakened bodies. His eyes wander until they come upon the latest addition to their little group. Dave had arrived a few days earlier, traumatized by his jump and the brutality of war. The poor boy stares at his plate and what little food may have been put on it, a pitiful look on his face. Rations are further reduced by the Red Cross' delay in getting supplies to the camp. Their meals are more water than anything really nutritious these days, not that they'll be very nutritious on better days. They've had to divide their rations even further until the next delivery is assured. With the cold weather ahead, they won't see the end of winter if they eat all their reserves now. The kid looks like he's about to cry, and maybe he is. Buck has heard him tossing and turning most of the night to find a better position, his stomach screaming in the darkness of the room. He's still relatively new here, having only been a POW for two weeks, and not totally used to the camp's hunger and harsh life. Discreetly, Buck puts part of his meal on the boy's plate. A turnip, not the best, but it should give him energy and nutrients for today at least, and maybe for the next few days. The child needs it; the days ahead will be difficult. He can tell that the weather is changing, that it's going to get harsher and harsher. And anyway, it's not as if Buck will enjoy eating it. He's pretty sure he can't eat vegetables today. Dave can have his. He's not hungry anymore. He's fine.

Summary

Bonnie drummed her fingertips on the wheel as the weight of what her daughter said hit her. “It’s not the same world I grew up in,” she sighed. “There’s a lot more craziness in the world. Supervillains used to be isolated to one or two wackos per hero, now it's quadruple that. Now it's cool to be Doomsday on the playground. It's normal business to capitalize on someone's death - make damn video games about it and rent his snuff film at Blockbuster for a buck ninety-nine. The depravity of the world is sickening Cis, I just wanted to give you the tools to protect you from it.”  Cissie had a different recollection of her mother’s motives and she bit her tongue from reminding Bonnie that the second she got her father’s insurance money she enrolled her in a revolving door of schools and lessons ranging from ballet to karate and twelve other martial arts during a time when all she wanted to do was grieve. She could do a pirouette while balancing a stack of books on her head and end it with a kick strong enough to shatter collarbones all while reciting Shakespeare and Ovid. It was a time of both isolation and suffocating control where she had no sense of self or autonomy other than what name she wanted her mother to use when she criticized her ‘performances’.  She bit the words back and instead she choked out an awkward cough when she saw a decrepit wooden sign with peeling green paint peering around unkempt juniper bushes. Even though they were faded, the letters were clear in their white cursive script.  H A Y E S  M A N O R  “That’s the house right mom?” Cissie asked and Bonnie slowed down as she turned a sharp corner. The house was finally visible then, dark and lonely, nestled on several acres of ill-kept land. If Cissie wasn’t actively looking for the house, she might have missed it in the swaths of colorful trees and green ivy crawling over it. 

Cissie frowned.  She expected old, she expected secluded, but she did not expect decrepit and totally isolated from humanity. “That’s the house?” she said, doubt dripping between each word.  “I told you it needed a little landscaping done girlie. Trust me, she’s beautiful on the inside.” Bonnie pulled up next to two moving vans that had been waiting for her. “Good, they got started already!”  Cissie still couldn’t help but stare at the wall of ivy that made the house look like a dungeon from one of Bart’s video games. Each window was like black ice cast against the green, but in one she could have sworn she saw movement. Brushing it off as seeing one of the curtains, Cissie got out of the car.
