Another playthrough of the Mass Effect Trilogy finished! First time on insanity and as an adept, played modded so I didn't get my steam achievements but that's ok. I have plenty more Shepards ready to start back at 1 again and go achievement hunting. Chose synthesis (again) and started getting teary eyed when Ashley and EDI hugged in the epilogue. I'm gonna miss playing as Reggie.

What are you making him…? Coconut Crab Curry!

Of course the merman is begging and begging for you to make this for him. He’s used to personal chefs and kitchen staff, but it’s more special when his cutie makes him food. Also because he’s not very adept to it….but he trusts you.

This recipe is made with lots of love and patience….emphasis on the patience. This wouldn’t be a problem, except after waiting and waiting, when you finally finish making your curry in Rafayel’s huge but barren kitchen, by the time you come back from an emergency grocery run for some lemon juice to finish it off with- he’s already cracked into half the crab legs.

“Okay Okay- Wait! I’ll go catch more by myself-!” He shouts as he’s running away from you as you chase him down with one of the few legs of crab he left in the pot. It’s safe to say he enjoyed your cooking.

When You offered to make him a chicken pot pie- you accidentally mentioned the crust topping.

“Crust? Like Bread? No…that’s okay”. Your flatmate declined.

That’s when you offered to change it up…without the added “bread-like” top.

He was a little more excited than he thought, but he’s used to you cooking since he’s the one who put a hit on your apartment with how often the fire department had to intervene when he plays chef….

When you finally gave him a plate to enjoy with you on the couch, you ask him how it was but you’re too little too late. 2 minutes in- and he’s knocked out on the couch in a food coma. Comfort food is a little dangerous for him.

What are you making him….? Pancakes!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? Even if it’s full of sugar…? You side eye Zaynes breakfast requests, but you don’t complain, that much. It could be worse- at least Dr. Zayne doesn’t eat exclusively spinach smoothies and oatmeal bars for breakfast. Instead, he waits patiently as you make pancakes from scratch and load them up with chocolate chips and strawberries with whipped topping and maple syrup.

He’d gladly indulge with you, in moderation.

You’d catch him adding extra sugar on top…but when you try to interject he’d act like you’re the nagging doctor instead.

“If you’re going to enjoy something you should enjoy it to the fullest, no?” He’d say, shutting you up with a playful smile as he presses out the whipped cream.

Rich, Verstile, and Classic. A dish like your partner- You wanted to make Sylus something new and special….especially when he gives you his card to go wild with at the market.

You know the duck fat and hearty nature of the dish would certainly please him… but he’s especially glad you gave him a break from all the spicy food.

You spend your afternoon making sure it tastes as good as can be, plating it up and putting it on the dining table- trying to make it as extravagant and romantic like Sylus always does for you.

When he comes home, he’s got a deep chuckle to let out once he sees the display.

“I just got a possible fraud warning call from my credit card company. I’m glad you took advantage, sweetie.” He says with a smirk, impressed with your ability to run his pocket dry with a single meal.

This is a special recipe from both of your childhoods. The first time you even had it, was when Caleb made it for you after you both got soaked in the rain walking home from school. The warmth and aroma was a core memory for you. This time, you decided to feed him instead.

Except you’d actually follow the recipe…instead of throwing things in a pan and gambling on it like Caleb would usually do. Somehow it would always taste good though…

When you finally make the simple but nostalgic dish, Caleb is eager and waiting as you bring a spoonful to his mouth, blowing in it for him before he take a big bite. He’d let out a long “Mmmmm” and take a few more bites and plant soft kisses on your cheek to thank you.

“Look at you, my little chef, aren’t you? It’s good.” He’d say, cheesy as ever.

Now, voice actor Jennifer Hale told Eurogamer she'd love to be part of it and believes the original cast should be involved too. "You will always get a yes vote from me on Shepard coming back in any form," said Hale. "That was such a gift, and it's a gift I will always be extremely joyful to receive." Something just popped up in my brain and entertains/scares me ever since - a meeting of Lora Alenko and Hannah Shepard. (In an informal setting because during some official ceremony there'd most probably be no way they'd get to talk.) But something like a house warming party or a wedding party. Depending on how much they know about each other that could turn out most interesting. (And no - I'm not constantly thinking about Sam and Kaidan. Only while I'm awake)

This is an excellent thing to think about, and one I have not devoted too much time to - yet - in part because the role Hannah Shepard will play through the rest of Opus isn't entirely set. I've toyed with her arc going multiple different directions, though as of late I've honed in on something that feels right.

Lora is a fun one to ponder, too, because how she reacts to Hannah begs the question...how much does she know about Sam's estrangement with her? How much, if anything, has Kaidan shared about his own feelings towards her, which would likely bias Lora's feelings in return? What's the public story?

Lora was raised in high society, so she speaks the language. If she were to have Opinions about Hannah when they meet, she would hide them well. I think she would also recognize that it wouldn't be wise or helpful to insert herself into a conflict that doesn't belong to her, unless she had to. For Sam's sake, she would be extraordinarily polite unless her hand was forced.

As a mother, she would also have a perspective on Hannah Shepard that neither Sam and Kaidan have. Whether that means she would react harshly towards Hannah or with more compassion I don't know yet.

A conversation between the two of them would be very interesting, in part because as two people who are extremely adept at playing roles in social situations, it would be all the things they don't say that would tell you the most.

I finished ME2 on Normal! (And did not die in the entire final section from when the Normandy crash-landed until the Freaky Deaky Human Reaper was officially tossed in the trash can! I'm actually very proud of that, considering how many times I died on Casual last time. 😱☺️)

Successfully romanced Jack, who really does have such a sweet romance once you get through her angry exterior. 🤗

I changed to the Cerberus armor for the final fight because I liked the stats it provided, namely a bump in health and heavy weapons' ammo. Hated not looking like my handsome N7 self, though. BUT I POWERED THROUGH THE PAIN OF BEING LESS FASHIONABLE.

😜I also played a little more Paragrade this time, always picking Paragon for the interrupts and major decisions but allowed myself a few Renegade dialogue options every so often, as a treat. 😉 I mean, Grunt in particular seemed to really enjoy getting the occasional Renegade pep talk, lol!

Some random caps I took along the way:

I adore Samara's eyes! 😍 I also really love her relationship with Shepard, how you can feel that she respects you and considers you her friend, and that's something pretty rare for her. You can tell that she's so lonely and so bound by her Code that it's hard for her to connect to anybody else. I love that moment in ME3's Citadel Shore Leave where she'll tell you that she just wants to sit quietly with you for a moment. It just feels special and nice and it never fails to make me glad to be playing Shep as (mostly) Paragon. 🤗

Legion doing a little head tilt in the menu just made me d'awwwww at him. Who's a good Geth boi? Who's the bestest, goodest Geth boi EVAH? Yes, it's Legion, it is! 🤗🤗🤗

And I should add that the team of Legion and Zaeed proved to be very strong and capable in this run. I was impressed! It's such a shame that we meet Legion so very late in the game that we really don't get the chance to take him on many missions.

And speaking of missions, my experiment proved that no, you don't have to do the Lair of the Shadow Broker, Overlord or Arrival missions to still reach the end of the game. So I'll definitely be skipping those on Insanity just to try to cut down the amount of combat you have to do.

Annnnd speaking of Insanity: I was planning on doing another run to try out a different class but I think I'm going to try Insanity as a Sentinel first. If I fail miserably, can't advance, etc., then I'll start over with a new class back down on Normal and try that out. I'm thinking maybe Infiltrator or even just Soldier, but I really want to give Sentinel a try first. I like the Warp, Overload and Energy Drain powers and I think they'll come in handy when all enemies have shields and barriers. 😬

That's just so unnecessary, IMO. 😑

Anyway, being a Sentinel also helps me to feel closer to my fella.

And speaking of my boo, I didn't realize until I actually saw it in a Shiara vid, where Liara was there with Femshep at the start as the Normandy was being destroyed, that if Shepard has a love interest, THAT'S who appears to try to get you to evacuate. Both times I've gone through the ME2 opening, I was coming from a ME1 run where I didn't romance anyone and so, therefore, the game knew my true heart and gave me and Maleshep our guy to be with us in our time of need. *nodnods so seriously right now I can't even*

Okay, yeah, so probably Kaidan is Shep's second in command at this point? Or it's a rank thing that the game is using in lieu of a love interest? No, it's the POWAH OF MSHENKO LOVE, friends, it just cannot be denied! 💖💖💖😉

I know that it's not wise to do ME2's Insanity as a New Game+ because your enemies scale to your level, which will be high, but you have to earn all of your talent/power points again, I believe? So you'll be weak against even stronger enemies, yikes! Could be wrong but that's my best understanding at the moment.

Anyway, I'll be just returning back and importing in my previous ME1 Adept Shep and then choosing for Cerberus to rebuild him as a Sentinel. I think I'll try Miranda's romance while I'm here, too. I know I'll lose Jack or Miranda's romance in ME3, depending on which ME2 Shepard I then import, but I'd like to eventually playthrough as some of the other classes, so I'll be sure to romance one of them again in 2 and 3 so to get their couple of scenes, particularly those from the Citadel Shore Leave DLC.

The tragedy wasn't supposed to be repeated, but perhaps the unfinished scenario was inevitably repeated for a reason, and Death had already come for her, but... before it could reach Shepard, Shepard would snatch several lives from it's bony hands. Dozens. Hundreds. Shepard was called a hero, all were grateful to her - finally the vicious circle was broken, but, nevertheless, she believed that she didn't deserve the Star of Terra - this was the work of other selfless people. But one thing was indisputably clear even to herself - there was no point in getting in the way of an angry biotic. No one.

let’s just say the lazarus project weakens her biotic but the new cybernetic implants will give her an edge on tech skills until she gets familiar with her biotic again :3

it's really interesting to me how biotic shepard jumps up a full implant level compared to the rest of the galaxy

so we know kaidan is L2 with the very lucky and rare side effect of only migraines while ME1 adept/vanguard/sentinel shepard uses the L3* implant

(*fun fact about the L3 implant is that most people who have the L3 implant had them when they were 25 or younger since once you get an implant, it can only be replaced or altered through extremely dangerous brain surgery)

at the start of project lazarus/me2, shepard has the L5x (if you're an adept) or the L5n (if you're a vanguard) so shepard is the only known human biotic with an L5x/n implant by 2185.

the L4 implant is used on children during the Ascension Project which the implant uses the biotic amps + a built-in Vi interface to enable monitoring and enhancements over the user's abilities. by contrast, grissom academy uses the L3-X1 which are experimental implants based off the L3-X which were implants installed in unsuitable candidates

anyway: my whole point is. just how much control does a biotic shepard have? for comparison:

L1 = can manipulate small objects L2 = variable, depends on the person; generally stronger than L1 and considered stronger than L3 but with severe drawbracks and instability L3 = stable and more powerful than the L1, combat-ready biotics, but weaker than L2 L4 = roughly 10-15% over L3 (which is roughly 10% stronger than L2) L5x = no data* (only data is Commander Shepard) L5n = no data* (only data is Commander Shepard)

using biotics requires intensive physical effort to biologically generate dark energy, conscious control over their nervous system (assisted with biofeedback therapy), and mental control to create their physical mnemonic and since it's so intensive on the body, biotics in the alliance also have to have more calories and maintain their blood sugar and electrolyte levels at a stable rate

ANYWAY:

do you think shepard would have issues with their biotics like in the earlier stages of the L-series since they're using experimental implants thanks to cerberus?

i love the mass effect series so much

i'm on the third game and my gay little heart can't take it. good lord these games. no matter how many times i play through them the sequence from booting the game to meeting the council still HURTS

ted vanguard is fun though. y'all know me and my vanguards and honestly having him yeet himself into fights with his reinforced bones so he can punch a cerberus goon's spine out through their throat is so satisfying and so, SO him. he's still an adept in terms of skill in my brain and will be in writing, but i'm throwing a little vanguard in there like it's a playthrough of andromeda because lines between classes are arbitrary when it's biotics.

but as a question for y'all, particularly my old mass effect friends and moots and followers--what do YOU think would happen if shepard were the one injured on mars instead of the virmire survivor? thoughts? discuss! i'd like to get some opinions on this bc i don't know that i've ever seen it written out.

(and if you have seen it written out, send me links! i'd like to read them!)
