 "Prayer for the French Republic" is a moving- thought provoking play by Joshua Harmon (Bad Jews). The plays premise is how safe a Jewish family is in modern day France. Harmon through his characters gives us a history lesson about how Jews have been slaughtered throughout time and what the reason is behind man's inhumanity toward men. Directed by Davis Cromer, this three hour plays moves quickly and never lets you out of the action on stage; we stay transfixed and focused in this heartfelt play.

 Cromer has a great cast to work with... Betsy Aiden is a powerhouse theatrical actor; Francis Benhamou too is a fiery actress who is rapid fire when quoting history. Molly Ranson who is a third cousin to the Benhamou's is visiting from America. A woke Gen Z who see's Israel as an aggressor draws the ire from Elodie (Benhamou). Debate and humor is at the forefront of this behemoth play, however, this play has less meaning to it than it did when it played a year ago off Broadway. Politically written plays run the risk of being dis-proven over time and "Prayer" is one of those. The October 7th attacks by Hamas has changed the realm of this play and so has the off handed remarks by former president Trump.

 What the playwright has done well, however, is bringing forth the history of French Jews and Jews around the world. We hear about how the French emancipated the Jews, the Crusades and how Jews are being attacked on the streets of France. It is when Marcelle and Charles Benhamou's son, Daniel (Aria Shahghasemi) gets beat up for the second time that Charles ponders moving to Israel.

 On a turntable stage (Takeshi Kata), we are taken from 2017 and back to World War II. We meet the Solomon's, grandparents of Marcelle who have been spared by the Nazi's during the war. The mood, the nuance of the plot is deftly supported by excellent lighting by Amith Chandrashaker (MTC always seems to have superb lighting regardless of what show you see at the Friedman Theatre). Through the windows we see the Solomon's desperation of staying indoors during the last two years of the war. Even still, the father, Adolphe (Daniel Oreskes) is hopeful that his children will return from the war unscathed, and that his piano store will flourish as it did before the war.

 The three acts are broken up efficiently and acts two and three pick up steam as the play goes on. The acting is well done much to Cromer's credit. Doubling down in the action he almost tips the scales needlessly; maybe he had to because the times have changed since last produced only one year ago.

How Zello keeps people in the loop during South Africa’s unrest

On June 29, former South African president Jacob Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison for corruption during his presidency. Zuma—the first ethnic Zulu to hold the country’s highest office—has a loyal following. He also has many detractors, who blame his administration’s corruption for a stagnant economy and weakened democracy.

Zuma didn’t turn himself in until July 7, saying he was innocent and that jail could kill him at 79 years old. Within hours, protests and widespread looting, particularly in his home city of Durban, were reported as supporters stationed themselves around his compound and challenged police. That violence has led to at least 215 deaths and more than 2,500 arrests.

For South Africans like Amith Gosai, keeping track of what was happening on the ground was hard. His WhatsApp chats were flooded and confusing. Then he saw a note on his community WhatsApp group urging neighbors to join a sort of neighborhood watch channel on Zello, a “walkie-talkie” app that is fast becoming a tool for protest communication. 

“This helped us tremendously to create awareness around the community as well as to quell fears,” Gosai told me via Twitter DM.

Gosai, who is also from Durban, was among 180,000 people who downloaded Zello in the wake of Zuma’s arrest. Users subscribe to channels to talk to each other, sending live audio files that are accessible to anyone listening in on the channel.

Zello was originally designed to help people communicate and organize after natural disasters. With Wi-Fi or a data connection, people can use it to broadcast their location, share tips, and communicate with rescuers or survivors in the aftermath of a hurricane, flood, or other emergency. In the US, Zello found traction in 2017’s Hurricane Harvey rescue efforts. The app is also used by taxi drivers, ambulance workers, and delivery personnel who want to send hands-free voice messages, according to Raphael Varieras, Zello’s vice president of operations, says. Because Zello is a voice-first platform, it’s faster than typing and requires no literacy skills. 

But recent events suggest that use of Zello is increasingly being used to connect people in areas of unrest as well. Within hours of the most recent Israeli-Palestinian conflict, downloads skyrocketed to 100 times their usual rate, for example. And Cuba also saw a spike in downloads amid protests over shortages of food and medicine. Unsurprisingly, this development has prompted some countries to ban the app, including China, Venezuela, and Syria.

Without a formal emergency response system like the US’s 911, South Africans have been increasingly turning to Zello to coordinate ad hoc ambulances and neighborhood patrols. One channel, South Africa Community Action Network, boasts 11,600 paying members who donate for emergency services like ambulances, along with more than 33,000 non-paying members, according to a blog post on the site.

One Twitter user in South Africa I spoke to (who requested anonymity in light of the current dangerous situation) said that some people were using Zello to figure out which houses and storefronts were ripe for looting, while others were tuning in to gauge whether they should flee or stay where they are. 

Another user, Javhar Singh, said via Twitter DM that he was using it as “live communication among community members to notify us about the whereabouts of looters,” adding: “It is way faster than the news.”

Crucially in such a tense situation, Zello is anonymous. “People don’t have access to your personal number like in WhatsApp,” says Gosai. 

The speed, anonymity, and intimacy created by voice make Zello feel urgent. But those same characteristics could breed misinformation, which Zello does not currently monitor—anyone can use the app at any time to say whatever they want. In fact, Zello was used in planning and carrying out the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.

Zello’s popularity in South Africa also proves that online audio isn’t just a 2020 trend. Audio chat rooms on Clubhouse and Discord are built on the idea that people want to talk about common interests, and Facebook and Twitter are actively testing live audio on their platforms. Zello’s general audience, however, isn’t sticking around long enough to get to know people: they’re looking for news, fast and unfiltered.

“There’s a long history of Zello as a go-to app in times of crisis,” says Zello’s CEO, Bill Moore. In South Africa and elsewhere, that increasingly means more than just natural disasters.

So, what EXACTLY is oil pulling? Oil pulling (often referred to as oil swirling or oil swishing), invented by Ukrainian Physician Dr. F. Karach, M.D., is basically the process of swishing around oil in your mouth (think mouthwash, except using oil instead) for a period of usually about 15-25 minutes. It is referred to as "Kavala Graham" in Ayurveda texts. So why would anyone be crazy enough or even remotely have any interest in doing this? There are two kinds of people: those who like to camp, and those who don’t. I fall squarely in the second category — not because I hate the great outdoors, but because I’m fond of hot showers and comfy beds. Still, the prospect of reading a manga about a group of camping enthusiasts intrigued me: is camping popular in Japan? Would its characters hike in the deep wilderness or pitch their tents at KOA? Are bears as much a problem for Japanese backpackers as they are for Americans hikers? Laid-Back Camp didn’t answer all of my questions, but it definitely earned a spot on my pull list. Laid-Back Camp may be the most quintessentially Japanese thing I’ve read this year: it features cute girls doing cute things, all while imparting information about camping gear. There’s no real plot to speak of, just a meet-cute in the first chapter that introduces seasoned camper Rin to enthusiastic newbie Nadeshiko. Through one of those only-in-manga coincidences, Rin and Nadeshiko attend the same school, where two other girls — Aoi and Chiaki — are struggling to recruit members for their Outdoor Exploration Club. You can guess what happens next: Nadeshiko joins the club and, by dint of her Golden Retriever personality, brings the skeptical Rin into the fold.

Each chapter is built around a skill or a piece of equipment. In “Mount Fuji and Cup Ramen,” for example, Rin explains how to build the perfect campfire, calling dried pine cones “nature’s premier fire starter,” while in “You Can Only Go Camping If You Have the Gear,” the Outdoor Exploration Club pores over catalogs, debating the merits of down and synthetic sleeping bags. (They even try their hand at making one out of cardboard, bubble wrap, and mylar.) These passages are deftly woven into the fabric of each story, playing a natural part of the girls’ conversations as they plan camping trips. Dashes of humor and breath-taking scenery add welcome nuance to the storytelling, preventing it from tipping into 4-koma wackiness or edu-manga dullness. Best of all, Rin is a genuinely interesting character, a small, self-sufficient kid who prefers camping by herself in the winter. Though volume one doesn’t explain how she caught the camping bug, author Afro has done such a good job of fleshing out Rin that it doesn’t matter; we can see how someone as introspective and tenacious as she is would exhibit such a delightfully independent streak. Recommended, even for those who prefer the Great Indoors.

NerdSpan’s Keith Hendricks has quickly become one of my favorite manga critics, bringing the same enthusiasm and insight to comics as different as Master Keaton and Kakagurui: Compulsive Gambler. His recent review of Astra Lost in Space, for example, offers this thoughtful assessment of Kenta Shinohara’s draftsmanship:

Shinohara’s planets are such magnificent fictive ecospheres, and his examples of imaginary science so instantly credible, that one takes him not only for a mangaka, but an authority on exobiology and exogeology. Shinohara builds these planets from the ground up, so that one has an idea of not only their climate, and the evolution of their biosphere, but the physical and astronomical data of the planet; and even when these aren’t directly stated, one gets the idea that they’re under the surface somewhere. Moreover, these planets would only be slightly more believable if he had photographs, for he is an excellent line artist not only of teenagers and sci-fi hardware–common skills in comic book creators–but of alien lifeforms and alien worlds.

Also worth reading is Martin de la Iglesia‘s essay “Has AKIRA Always Been a Cyberpunk Comic?”, an in-depth look at the manga’s reception in the US and Germany.
