Where it all started in 1987. Near the Red light district, at the Oudemanhuispoort, our company was founded in this historic building. Over a decade ago we had to relocate due to the danger of collapsing. The Undertaker’s Men Revolt (history mystery) Memento Mori (if you can afford it) 31st January 1696, undertakers in the Dutch Republic in Amsterdam rebel at the policy to reduce the number of undertakers from 300 to 72. In reaction to the policy they ignite a riot named as the ‘Aansprekersoproer’, (The Undertaker’s Men Revolt). The riot is quickly joined by the poor of the city, who believe (upon rumours spread by the undertakers), that the reduced number will only provide funerals for the rich. The second day of the revolt is joined by the cities sailors, where upon houses of the burgomasters (the mayors of the city) and the elite are attacked, and their inhabitants killed. On the third day, the riot ends with the intercession of a former mayor who quells the violence.
