Two-Wheelers December Sales 2020: TVS Records 17.5 Per Cent Growth In Year-On-Year Sales

Total two-wheeler sales of TVS Motor Company grew by 20 per cent, with 258,239 units despatched in December 2020, against 215,619 units in the corresponding month last year.

Company’s total exports grew by 28 per cent with 94,269 units retailed in December 2020

TVS Motor Company has announced its monthly sales figures for the month of December 2020. The company registered total sales of 272,084 units in December 2020 in comparison to 231,571 units in the same month last year, recording a growth of 17.5 per cent. The sales in December 2020 witnessed a growth of 9.8 per cent compared to 247,789 units sold in November 2020. Overall two-wheeler sales of TVS grew by 20 per cent with 258,239 units despatched in November 2020, compared to 215,619 units despatched in the same month a year ago.

TVS scooter sales also grew by 4 per cent with 77,705 units of scooters in December 2020 as against 74,716 units in December 2019.

Total motorcycle sales grew by 27 per cent, recording 119,051 units in December 2020, as against 215,619 units in December 2020. Moreover, the Indian two-wheeler manufacturer despatched 77,705 units of scooters in December 2020 as against 74,716 units in December 2019, recording a growth of 4 per cent. However, domestic two-wheeler sales grew by 13 per cent registering 176,912 units in December 2020 as against 157,244 units in December 2019.

The total three-wheelers sold by TVS Motor Company stood at 13,845 units in December 2020, against 15,952 units in December 2019. The company recorded a de-growth of 13.2 per cent. As far as exports are concerned, the company exported a total of 94,269 units in December 2020 compared to 73,512 units in December 2019, seeing a growth of 28 per cent. Two-wheeler exports consisted of 81,327 units in December 2020 as against 58,375 units in December 2019, a growth of 39 per cent.

Motorcycle grew by 27 per cent recording 119,051 units in December 2020 as against 93,697 units in December 2019.

Honda Celebrates its Heritage by Restoring…a Chevy Pickup?

Honda is celebrating its 60th anniversary in the United States with a blast from the past with classic motorcycles and a replica of the delivery truck it used during its early years. When it first arrived into the U.S. market back in 1959, Honda bought a fleet of Chevrolet Apache 10 pickups to use as delivery vehicles for the products it was importing over from Japan. Back then, Honda only sold motorcycles and would use its trucks to ship its two-wheeled goods across its dealership network in Southern California. Last week, Honda celebrated its 60th anniversary in the U.S.

In an attempt to recreate a photo of one of the delivery trucks parked in front of its old headquarters on 4077 Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA, Honda bought a 1961 Chevrolet Apache pickup and restored it to like-new condition, painting it in the same livery as the original delivery trucks by referencing archival images and getting insight from employees of that era. The truck was powered by a 160-hp V-8 engine mated to a three-speed manual transmission. Additionally, two restored classic motorcycles, a Honda 50 and CB160, are placed on the truck bed, and the recreation is now on display at Honda’s headquarters in Torrance, CA.

It took a few years before Honda expanded into the automobile sector. From 1959 to 1968, the company only sold motorcycles. The first Honda vehicle imported to the U.S. was an N600, a modified version of the N360 kei car that went on sale as a 1970 model.

The Chevrolet Apache delivery truck with the two vintage Honda motorcycles in its bed will also be displayed at the 2019 SEMA Show. Additionally, Honda is planning to showcase its retro creation at classic car gatherings around Southern California before it moves to the American Honda Collection Hall, which is located in Torrance. There, a replica of the front of the automaker’s Pico boulevard office will be built to serve as a backdrop for the truck.

This week, the Professor has a complaint about that saintly game developer, Valve. What's his problem with Gabe and the multi award winning game studio? They're sold out of VR headsets with only a month to go before the release of Half Life: Alyx.

The Masters of the Universe are coming back as well. The Professor has another complaint, this time about the casting of Skeletor. He thinks it's ridiculous to bring back Skeletor's original voice in a different role and cast a new actor for Skeletor. Even if that actor is the esteemed Mark Hamill. DJ thinks this sacrilege is 100% ok. The star studded cast list has the Nerds highly excited for this revival.

Now that Dragon has been human rated, SpaceX have moved the capsule to the launch pad, and the crew are a pair of former Shuttle pilots. This will be the first manned space mission from the US since the Shuttle program was shut down. America Can Into Space? Soon, hopefully.

Professor and DJ have some trouble pronouncing American Indian and Finnish words in the Remembrances and Shoutouts, and laugh at the Boomers who couldn't believe Bill and Ted actually speak like that.

From 1850 to 1886, Geronimo joined with members of three other Chiricahua Apache bands — the Tchihende, the Tsokanende and the Nednhi — to carry out numerous raids, as well as fight against Mexican and U.S. military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Geronimo's raids and related combat actions were a part of the prolonged period of the Apache–United States conflict, which started with American settlement in Apache lands following the end of the war with Mexico in 1848. During Geronimo's final period of conflict from 1876 to 1886, he "surrendered" three times and accepted life on the Apache reservations in Arizona. H.L. Hunley or Hunley made her only attack against an enemy target on the night of February 17, 1864. The target was the USS Housatonic, a 1,240 long tons (1,260 t) wooden-hulled steam-powered sloop-of-war with 12 large cannons, which was stationed at the entrance to Charleston, about 5 miles (8.0 kilometres) offshore. Desperate to break the naval blockade of the city, Lieutenant George E. Dixon and a crew of seven volunteers successfully attacked Housatonic, ramming Hunley's only spar torpedo against the enemy's hull. The torpedo was detonated, sending Housatonic to the bottom in five minutes, along with five of her crewmen. Hunley did not survive the attack and sank, taking with her all eight members of her third crew, and was lost.  The Sinking of USS Housatonic on 17 February 1864 during the American Civil War was an important turning point in naval warfare. H.L. The picture had been planned for a 1988 release, and filming and production had completed on schedule. However, the original film distributor, DEG, fell into significant debt in late 1987, and by 1988 had filed for bankruptcy. Costa Rica: Tainted alcohol death toll rises to 25; 59 people affected overall

Costa Rica's Ministry of Health says a total of 59 people have consumed tainted alcohol as the death toll due to the liquor rose to 25 in the Central American tourist destination.

According to a press release on the agency's website, 19 men and six women between the ages of 32 and 72 have died since June.

The Ministry of Health said it had closed 10 establishments and seized more than 55,000 containers of alcohol it said were laced with methanol, a colorless, poisonous alcohol found in antifreeze.

Adding methanol to distilled beverages allows sellers to increase the volume of liquid, as well as its potential potency, according to SafeProof, an organization that lobbies against counterfeit alcohol.

Earlier, the ministry said affected brands included Guaro Montano, Guaro Gran Apache, Aguardiente Estrella, Aguardiente Barón Rojo, Aguardiente Timbuka and Molotov Aguardiente.

In its latest press release, the brands Guaro Chonete, Guaro Cuerazo, Guaro Sacheto, Red Star Brandy, Brandy Red Barnacle, Brandy Timbuka and Brandy Molotov were added to the list of those that should be avoided.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, symptoms of methanol poisoning include drowsiness, confusion, headache, dizziness, and the inability to coordinate muscle movement, nausea, vomiting, mania, coma, seizure as well as heart and respiratory failure.

Meanwhile, the FBI is running toxicology analysis on at least two of the 10 Americans confirmed to have died in the Dominican Republic, another popular vacation destination, to see if tainted alcohol played a role. And the country's Ministry of Tourism is amping up safety measures.

The Hard Rock Hotel chain has also removed liquor dispensers from rooms at its properties in the Dominican Republic and Mexico.

Costa Rica blames 19 deaths on tainted alcohol: What you need to know

Over the weekend, authorities in Costa Rica confiscated 30,000 bottles of liquor after 19 people died after drinking what is believed to be tainted alcohol from multiple brands in the last six weeks.

The news comes as the FBI runs toxicology tests in connection with two of the 10 Americans confirmed to have died in the Dominican Republic since March.

Meanwhile, The Hard Rock Hotel chain has removed liquor dispensersfrom rooms on the Caribbean island as well as at properties in Mexico.

Here's what we know about counterfeit alcohol overseas and how you can identify and avoid it.

WHAT IS COUNTERFEIT ALCOHOL?

What is often used as a catch-all term for unregulated booze is actually a fraudulent imitation of a legitimate product through tampering or refilling it with toxic forms of alcohol such as methanol (wood-distilled) or ethanol (grain-distilled).

Other forms of unregulated alcohol can include:

Informal: Local artisanal or homebrewed beverages, which may or or may not be regulated

Contraband: Liquor smuggled across the border to avoid taxes and tariffs

Non-conforming: Beverages made by manufacturers who do not adhere to accepted bottling or labeling procedures, including products made with ethyl alcohol, or other solvents that make it unsuitable for human consumption

Tax leakage: Legally produced beverages for which taxes were not paid

Surrogate: Liquids not intended for drinking but consumed anyway; may be legal for non-recreational uses

Which countries have had issues with it?

At least 25 nation were spotlighted in a June 2018 study by the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking. The group is comprised of 11 major alcoholic beverage manufacturers including Anheuser Busch, Heineken and Molson Coors, and they want unregulated alcohol brought under greater governmental control.

In Costa Rica, illicit alcohol makes up 19% of total sales. it's even higher in Mexico (34%) and in the Dominican Republic (29%), where several U.S. tourists were said to have been sickened or died after drinking from the minibars in their rooms.

Last week, the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Tourism announced it would be amping up safety protocols, including new rules for hotels' handling of food and alcohol and greater transparency about their food and beverage suppliers.

In all, Central and South America accounted for over half the countries on the list along with seven African countries (where the numbers ranged from 23% in South Africa to 61% in Uganda). Two Eastern European countries were also cited:  Russia (38%) and the Czech Republic (7%).

How can I avoid it?

Don't buy bargain bin liquor: If you've never heard of the label or the price sounds too good to believe, there's a good chance the booze is likely counterfeit, says the Overseas Security Advisory Council, a joint effort between the State Department and private sector groups dedicated to studying security threats against U.S. interests overseas. The group says such beverages may be watered down with jet fuel, antifreeze or other chemicals that are toxic to humans.

Avoid homebrews: Trying bootlegged local booze may sound like an adventure or the fodder of future drinking stories but it could well land you in the hospital or the morgue. OSAC points to cases in Uttar Pradesh India, where 31 people died and 160 were hospitalized after drinking homebrew laced with methyl alcohol.

TVS has started selling the Apache RTR 160 Race Edition in India. The bike is priced at Rs 79,715 for the front disc variant and Rs 82,044 for the front and rear disc variant (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Race Edition only sports aesthetic changes. The bike is only available in white colour with red graphics – a colour scheme that is exclusive to this edition. On its fuel tank extension, the RTR 160 Race Edition sports a 3D TVS insignia, while the Apache branding has been moved to the side. There is also a ‘Race Edition’ decal on the fuel tank.

New 2018 TVS Apache RTR 160 Launched

It has been a long time coming, but it is finally here. TVS has now launched the new-generation Apache RTR 160 to compete Suzuki Gixxer, Honda CB Hornet and the Bajaj Pulsar NS 160.

Since the time of its launch almost a decade back, TVS hasn’t quite updated the Apache RTR 160. With premium commuters now graduating to the 160cc category, it would have been hard for TVS to ignore the segment for long. The company has now introduced the new-generation RTR 160 at Rs. 81,490 (carburetted version) and Rs. 89,990 (FI version) (ex-showroom Delhi). This new model demands about Rs. 3000 more than its predecessor. Fuel injection wasn’t offered on the outgoing model,  in fact, even today, no other manufacturer offers it in this class.

It seems like offering matte colour options has become a trend in the two-wheeler market. Just a few months back, Suzuki and Bajaj brought in matte colour options for the Access 125 and the Dominar respectively. Now, TVS has introduced a matte red option for the popular Apache RTR 160 as well as the RTR 180. The Hosur-based company has priced them at Rs 77,865 and Rs 81,833 respectively. This essentially means that the matte red option of both these motorcycles is Rs 1000 more than the standard colour trims.

The refreshed TVS Apache RTR 160 will take design inspiration from its bigger sibling, the Apache RTR 200 4v..

After launching the Apache RR 310 and the NTorq 125, TVS seems to be on a roll these days. The company is not showing any signs of slowing down, as it’ll continue its offensive with the launch of another new product on March 14, 2018. As of now, TVS hasn’t divulged details of the upcoming two-wheeler, but it’s very likely going to be the new Apache RTR 160.

Over the past few months, the refreshed version of the RTR 160 has been spied upon being tested on public roads.
