Rediscovering the old Apache Trail
Photo taken circa 1910. Arizona State Library The Apache Trail has re-opened, and one hot September 2024 Sunday, my son and I found ourselves with no obligations we could not avoid. Being too hot to hike (daytime highs never sank below 95 the entirety of September in 2024) (God – I hope that’s a remarkable sentence in the future) my son suggested that I should drive. Because the AC in my 2015…

December 2023 Mangum Dental Hike-of-the-Month Wave Cave, Superstition Mountains, Apache Junction, AZ by Jami Ogden
Distance: 3.0 Miles Difficulty: Moderate Elevation Gain: 869 feet (2,200' to 3180') Parking: There is minimal parking, which tends to fill up quickly on the weekends. We went on Wednesday and saw about three people. You will need a permit to park at this particular trailhead as it is not public land but Arizona State Trust Land. You can get an individual permit for $15. Permits are per person and not per vehicle. Permits can be paid for online at https://azland.my.salesforce-sites.com/recreationalpermit/ Directions: Type "Carney Springs Trailhead" into your navigation app or take Highway 60, Superstition Fwy, 6 miles East of Apache Junction, and turn left on Peralta Road. Drive Northeast on Peralta Road; the road turns to dirt after the houses of Gold Canyon. The road is suitable for cars. After 5.6 miles, stay on Peralta Road by staying left, and in a half mile, the small parking lot will be on the west side of the road.
Summary The Wave Cave can be found near the Superstition Mountains just outside of Apache Junction. It's a popular 3-mile out-and-back trail that is considered a challenging hike, but we have graded it moderate. The hike begins flat, and the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and steep. Begin at Canary Springs trailhead just off Peralta Rd. You’ll find a lost gold mine along the trail and stunning views of the Superstition Mountains along the way to the cave. There are some intersecting trails, so follow the white arrows. When you reach the cave, you’ll enjoy the coolness of the cave with a breathtaking view of the Superstitions! There is often an abundance of bees in the cave. From the trailhead, you can see the cave opening and the slight shadow of the rock formation inside the cave that resembles a giant wave. The hike starts at a steady incline and becomes steeper, with boulders to climb as you get closer to the cave. We started our hike around 10:00 a.m., and it got warm fast. The trail is exposed, so I highly recommend packing extra water. We also knew it would take us a bit longer to hike, and we wanted to take our time inside the cave, so we opted to pack a picnic lunch. We were grateful for the food and rest once we reached the trail's end and inside the cave. The cave was cool and breezy, with many calming sounds and echoes. One of the most incredible things we discovered while exploring the cave was a tiny hidden treasure box! My sister and I went outside the cave to the right, and it had another little smaller cave that was perfect for throwing out our blanket for a picnic. When I turned around inside the mini cave, there was a low overhang; a small glimmer caught my eye, and I realized something was in the nook of the rocky overhang. My sister (who is much taller than I) reached up and pulled out a tiny metal treasure chest! Inside was a note to take a treasure and leave a treasure. I took out a lucky penny, and she chose a tiny little stitched doll. We replaced the items with our Star Wars key chains, Yoda and R2D2 found a new home inside the box, and we re-hid the treasure chest for the next lucky people to find! So, if you decide to take this hike, make sure you keep an eye out for hidden treasure!

Doctor Who needs to do a story using the Lost Dutchman Mine story as the basis of it because if there were ever fodder for a Doctor Who story, its the Lost Duchman mine.
Like I cannot begin to explain how perfect the broad strokes of the story would work into doing a Doctor Who story because like... there’s so much weird shit around this mine that may or may not exist that you can just go crazy. Plus like, the mountain range that features in the legend that’s Arizona specific is literally called the Superstition Mountains. I can’t find a meaning for the Native name (or well, one of the Native names for the range, there’s a few tribes in the area and the Wikipedia article supplies the Yavapai name, but not a meaning. And I know there’s likely an Apache name attached to as some Apache believe, to use terminology familiar to us white folks, that there’s a hole to hell in the mountains and that’s the cause of the dust storms) but I assume it’s generally befitting of the range and epic. There’s also the entire connection it has to the Peralta family and the so called Baron of Arizona (seriously, look up James Reavis, I cannot make up the brass this guy had in the fraud he pulled until the government went ‘Yo we need to take a closer look’. He nearly had control of most of the land in the goddamn territory).
And lest I forget, the reason this entire thing isn’t some little footnote in AZ state history, in 1931 someone went looking for the mine and then went missing. Six months later the body was found, and the skull had what was identified as two bullet holes in it. Since then many other people have gone missing looking for the mine, that again, may or may not exist at all. We’ve got a lot of stories of lost mines out here, the Lost Dutchman story may just be putting a few different stories together, but it also might not.  But really, you could just play with the whole thing in general because if there’s one thing I know, it doesn’t matter what’s out there in the desert, if you’re not prepared the desert will get you before you find anything that may or may not exist (there’s even a trail out there that when I looked at the website, it basically said that you don’t hike this trail during the summer and if you start this trail, you finish this trail. And in the cooler time of year, they recommend taking like two gallons of water with you. Because you’re getting into some remote areas, as in the trail is marked by cairns).
The desert is a goddamn spooky ass place and you ought to respect her

LILUYE NARVAEZ ( SIVAN ALYRA ROSE ) is a 18 year old SENIOR student at Broadripple Academy. THEY are originally from FLORENCE, AZ but moved to Broadripple 4 YEARS ago. THEY are INTUITIVE and EMPATHETIC but can also be VAGUE and IDEALISTIC. –– penned by sam / 23 / aest / she/her
BASICS
Name: Liluye Narvaez
Nickname: Lu-ye, Lu
Age: Eighteen
Grade: Senior
House: Fenwick
Cabin Room: Senior Cabin Room 5
How long have they been at Broadripple: technically four years but spent their junior year interstate in Florida for Track
Where are they from originally: Florence, Arizona
Extra curricular: Cross Country, Track, and Soccer
Pinterest
lil note: i will probs be sticking entirely to they/them pronouns for liluye because that’s easier for me but sivan uses she and they, therefore liluye’s pronouns are also she and they
TRAITS
Positive Personality Traits: intuitive, empathetic, trusting, loyal, kind-hearted, adaptable, passionate
Negative Personality Traits: vague, idealistic, meek, closed-off, loner, brittle, dishonest
FACTS
when they were young, liluye would never have pictured a place like broadripple being a part of their life. they grew up in the deserts of arizona, living between the outskirts of phoenix and the san carlos apache indian reservation, between two family homes. the thick forests of rural massachusetts felt like an entire world away, something they might never see.
they were always an active child, always moving. either to something or away from. and they thrived in a team, really the only way an otherwise shy child ever made any friends. they tried out all sorts of sports but nothing ever really compared to running. they loved to stretch their long limbs out on different trails and feel the wind through their hair.
when they were nine they pulled their track and field team through multiple meets, and realised what a focus in athletics could do for them. it quickly took over their life, rising early and going to bed late each day to train and study. and they started to feel alone, solitary in that focus. a feeling that is still stuck with them, even though they’re just about twice as old now
they attended a private middle school in phoenix for grade eight and there liluye and their family were encouraged to apply for athletic scholarships to private schools for high school. and so they did. and that’s how broadripple came into the picture. liluye didn’t want to move so far away, not from their home or their family or the very few friends they had. but broadripple offered a full scholarship for all four years, and connections to universities that they could only dream of from claypool az.
so they shipped themselves across the country for school, feeling like a total outsider and completely out of their depth so far from home. during their freshman and sophomore years they tried their hand in just about every extra curricular, trying to find a crowd they could relate to. friends like they saw everyone else making. but they struggled. shyness and unintentional coldness preventing those solid connections from forming
eventually, they stopped trying so hard. refocused their energy on what they knew they were good at and why they were there in the first place. sports, athleticism. those were simple. they could understand those far easier than they would ever understand their classmates.
they have just spent the past year in florida on a sports exchange, only just returning to broadripple when they were sent to the retreat
HEADCANONS
they try to live very very minimally. part of the reason for that is they are so far from home. carting things back and forth quickly becomes a hassle if they have too much. they dont want to be too attached to anything material at broadripple or arizona, so they keep their belongings to an absolute minimum that way the things they are attached to can always travel with them. the only thing they keep that is not especially minimal is a small decorative box of keepsakes.
back in florence they have a pair of pet rats, both females and affectionately named alex and piper (after alex vause and piper chapman from orange is the new black ....... liluye is garbage u heard it here first) – they share them with their younger brother which very much eases the pain of leaving them behind for most of the year. when they facetime, a huge portion of it is their brother giving updates on their rats.
they’re an avid podcast listener, but they have an absolutely awful habit of pressing play and then not listening to a single word. more often than they would like to admit they just like the sound, using it as background noise. they’d really like to focus more on it, and actually listen to every word, but it’s hard to turn off
they struggle to make and keep friends, they always have. over time a soft childhood shyness became unintentionally harder, more cold. it’s defensive, thinking if they are soft but also such a loner, people will think something is wrong with them. and while liluye can’t say for certain whether or not something is wrong with them, they’d rather people think they’re alone because they choose it. just below the surface they are warm, kind, friendly, and whenever given the opportunity those traits show themselves
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RETREAT
What do they think about The Retreat? the place itself? liluye thinks its super fucking weird. doesn’t like the energy of it one bit. they dont mind the forest, before retreat they ran through lorehill trying to improve their trail running instinct and sense of direction. but there’s something different about the retreat, they feel as though they’re being watched there in a way they cant quite explain.
Do they have any previous experience with camping or other outdoors? yes but in arizona, camping and being outdoors in general in massachusetts is incredibly different. but that being said they dont really think the retreat is “camping”. there’s cabins, tables, a functioning toilet, a bus to and from campus? yeah, it’s not really camping and it’s really not that bad apart from the creepy vibe.
What does their cabin bunk look like? How will they decorate their space? as mentioned in headcanons, they are very minimalist or at least try to be. and their space in the cabin reflects that. they have an orange and white crocheted blanket over their bed. a small poster of the claypool rock tunnel (a4 size) and an old sun tarot card stuck to the wall over their bed. besides those things, their stuff is kept neatly in their suitcase and backpack and as much out of the way as it can be in the cramped space.
Do they believe in the supernatural? To what degree? yes, they do believe but it’s not something they talk about a lot. in fact, they probably actively avoid talking about supernatural things. they don’t like to invite any sort of negativity into their life and they fear disrespecting the spirits by discussing them. they’d rather a quiet and respectful relationship with the things they don’t quite understand.
Are they easily spooked? not really. at least not in a way that is obvious to others. a quickened heart rate, becoming more aware of their surroundings, those sort of things would happen if they were scared but overall, no. it takes a lot to genuinely frighten them.
AND FINALLY,
A very dumb but (hopefully) fun quiz made by your admins, please share what result you got
liluye got “you will sacrifice yourself for someone else” which probably dumbass

The Dolly Steamboat has been operated by the Grimh Family since 1987, with Cindi managing office operations, advertising and marketing, and Jeff as the Dolly’s senior captain and manager of boat operations and training. Of course, our staff and crew members are what make it all possible. We all work very hard to offer a great cruising and dining experience that is second to none!
The Dolly Steamboat derived its namesake from the original owners, Dolly and Paul Kennedy. They started tours in 1983. In October of 1987, Roger and Margie Grimh purchased the Dolly. Jeff and Cindi came onboard shortly thereafter. We enjoy and take pride in providing a venue that allows people of all ages and abilities to experience the breathtaking scenery and wildlife of Canyon Lake.
Superstition Mountain
Superstition Mountain Museum is located in an area full of legend, history and intrigue. You’ll find us in the rugged 160,000 acre Superstition Mountain range in the Tonto National Forest in Central Arizona. Our focus is on providing visitors with an experience of the Old West. We provide an historical context that includes the region's Native American people, the life of early western settlers, local geology and industry as well as the legends promoted through film and media.

The idea for establishing a museum devoted to the history, legend and lore of the Superstition Mountains had been in the back of local resident Tom Kollenborn’s mind for a long time when he, Larry Hedrick, Clay Worst, and Ron Lorenz first began discussing the idea in earnest in 1969.

Back in the 1890′s Goldfield boasted 3 saloons, a boarding house, general store, blacksmith shop, brewery, meat market and a school house. Just when it looked like the town would outgrow Mesa, the vein faulted, the grade of ore dropped and the town died a slow painful death.
After several unsuccessful attempts to reopen the mines, the town did come to life again from 1910 on and off until 1926. After more than 115 years, travelers from all over the world still visit this gold mining town located on the historic Apache Trail and enjoy the excitement and grandeur of Arizona’s wild west!
