Thank you DC Comics for not using Apollo and Midnighter even in the fucking pride issue.
Not even being the first queer husbands in the comics warrant them some clout. Great. 🤬🤬

Archangel/Psylocke (X-Men) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars out of 5. Each tries to kill the other. One of them succeeds. (A whole, acclaimed, arch started with Betsy training into killing Warren so she’s ready if she’s forced to stop him from getting out of control/go full villain, and ending with her actually killing him. Also Warren, during same arch, trying to kill her in the final fight.)
Kirk/Spock (Star Trek) ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 Spock tried very hard to kill Kirk. In both his incarnations. (In the original series at least twice - once provoked by Kirk (who wants to anger him for plot reasons) and once because he’s busy inventing the fuck or die trope. The half star because he doesn’t succeed (although he's made to think he killed Kirk). In the J.J. Abrams movies again Kirk provokes him for plot reasons. Spock doesn’t succeed in strangling Kirk because he gets stopped.) (Now we need Strange New World’s version and we completed the circle)
Diabolik/Eva Kant (Diabolik) ⭐⭐⭐ Eva memory-less/brainwashed/hypnotized is set by others against her lover Diabolik and does her best to take his head. More than once. Don't remember the contrary but must've happened. (Also. Early-Diabolik - back when he was still portrayed as cold and asshole - doesn’t take well Eva rebelling to his authority and attempts to strangle her at least once. He’s immediately sorry about it, but that’s not the point)
Arthur/Merlin (BBC's Merlin) ⭐⭐1/2 A whole episode of Merlin attempting to Arthur’s life. He doesn't get more than two stars and half because Merlin is brainwashed and his attempts are made for comics/humor. (Arthur trying to be-head Merlin in the very first episode during a fight should count as well.)
Naruto/Sasuke (Naruto) ⭐⭐ Sasuke spends half of his manga time with Naruto wanting to get rid of him. Two stars only because all the times they fight (3 times? 4?) and he has the upper hand (Naruto senseless or unguarded), Sasuke fails to land the final strike and kill him, leaving Naruto alive (and very confused). (Also, minus three stars because Naruto puts a leash around his neck and brings him back home)
Apollo/Midnighter (The Authority/DC Comics) ⭐ Can’t remember ATM, but one of them must’ve tried to kill the other, at some point. Only one star because Midnighter fights against Apollo to subdue him for the wrong reasons (he thinks he’s saving Apollo from a future he’s been lied about). Also, they’re the I-don-t-give-a-fuck-about-ethics version of Superman and Batman, a punch is expected if they fight. (Apollo does punch Midnighter when he discovers Midnighter has kissed another man, but this doesn't count at all)
[I included only the canon, the "they-aren't-canon-but-should-be-the-authors-were-cowards" and the "you don't need to break canon too much to make them canon" pairs. I left out other pairs I have listed in my favorite but work only if you heavily modify canon or even heavily butcher/change them (Drarry, my love, I'm looking at you)]
What do you mean your favorite pair didn’t try to kill each other at least once? Not even attempted murder? Not even a punch or two for the funsies?

That’s bullshit Anon. Gays sell as well as any other hetero superhero, if they are trusted into a good plot or team (or to a good author anyway).
Literally the first superhero comic book with a main gay couple (Midnighter/Apollo) is Authority which was a HUGE success of the late 90s, and it wasn’t in the pull list of yaoi/shounen ai readers (and wasn’t bought by LGBTQ-only either). It was a men’s title written with men readers in mind. Who kept buying it even if Midnighter/Apollo were shown kissing, marrying, sleeping together, adopting a daughter, breaking up, getting back together, crying about each other, cradling each other and everything you would read in a slash fiction, but on panel.
DC later bought out Wildstorm (the brand that published Authority) and not only relaunched the title (under the name Stormwatch) during New52 making sure Midnighter and Apollo were out and gay from the start (they were just three out of all the characters from the original Authority included relaunch), but also got their own story in the St. Valentine DC’s special. And generally their love was mentioned and the hurdles of being together was given the right amount of panel time. So much that…
… DC went to entrust Midnighter to Steve Orlando who wrote a Midnighter solo series in which Midnighter broke up with Apollo (because he’s an idiot, and he’s lucky Apollo really loves him despite him being idiot), dated on Tinder, dated someone ( sleeping in the same bed, implying sex, sex mentioned too) to then (finally) return with Apollo (with whom he has almost explicit sex on page - and for “explicit” I mean the drawing is cut so you only see their legs when they’re about to do it on the counter).
And then DC green lighted what is one of the most romantic (slash) piece of fictions I ever read, alias Apollo and Midnighter. (which everyone of you should read YESTERDAY)
All of these titles had their success (well, the relaunched Stormwatch not so much, but it wasn’t liked for its plot and the way characters were mixed together).
Midnighter - and Apollo - were even included in Future State, their love was the forefront of the Midnighter’s tie-in story.
Just recently DC got Midnighter and Apollo out of the freezer to place them in Superman’s Authority, the only characters from old Wildstorm property. And they’re introduced as gay and very much in love in the first panel. The miniseries has now a sequel currently running in the monthly Action Comics.
Oh, I was forgetting. Midnighter and Apollo are a stand-in for respectively Batman and Apollo. They were literally created to be the gay Batman and gay Apollo. And male readers eat that shit up since 90s.
So… don’t make everything about “catering to homophobes fans”, please. DC isn’t totally scared of using gay (as in male gay) characters.
I mean, they could be scared of making Clark or Bruce gay (and generally turning gay some established straight-and-old character), but Anon made a generalization that really irked me because no, you can’t generalize. Especially not with DC fans. Or DC wouldn’t keep pushing Midnighter (and his Apollo).
Because bigots will buy it if they’re are lesbian couples, but gays? Too far 🙄 gotta cater to the worst of fans
Okay, DC are scared to do it openly.
But they could've just leave them as it is, without making them literally brothers.
Ugh.

What’s with the news that The Authority will get a movie?
Are we serious or is a “Star Trek 4 movie will happen” kind of news - if you know what I mean.
Anyway. James Gunn, you better not fuck up with the casting of Apollo and Midnighter. YOU BETTER KEEP THEM IN CHARACTER!!

I was so disappointed that last month in Superman and the Authority #1 there was no trace of the powerhouse couple.
The wait was SO. WORTHY.

Authority Checklist: DC universe (Updated 23-08-2024)
The Wildstorm Checklist can be found here.
I’ll try to keep this list updated whenever Midnighter, Apollo or any other Authority character, show up in any DC title.
Prime Earth version (characters introduced in the DC universe during New 52)
Stormwatch (v3)
Grifter (v3) #07 Follows events from Stormwatch #6.
Red Lanters #10 Follows events from Stormwatch #9.
I, vampire 012 This was out the same month of Stormwatch #12 There’s also a flashback in issue #13.
Grifter #13/#14 Clashing with Stormwatch of the same month (#13/14) but... oh well.§ Also a background flashback cameo in issue #16.
Young Romance #1 Was out the same month of Stormwatch #17. However, the storyline of issue #17 starts in issue #14, so this one should be set between Stormwatch #14 and #15.
Midnighter (v2)
Midnighter and Apollo Six-issues series.
DC Cybernetic Summer (2020) 8 pages story in a 80 anthology of other unrelated stories. -> this story has been reprinted in G'nort's Swimsuit Edition (2023).
DC Pride (2021) Midnighter is featured in a story with Extraño, with whom Midnighter previously worked with in the Midnighter and Apollo limited series. Apollo is shown only on the cover and in a marvelous (and very sunny) pin up art with Midnighter.
Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special (2022) The  story “Together“ features instead the DC-versions of only Apollo and Midnighter. The story “City Boy and the King of Cities” features the New-52 Jack Hawksmoor. There’s other stories, in this collection, featuring the Wildstorm version of the Authority and another set after Warworld - see below.
DC's Harley Quinn, Romances (2023) A cute little story. Despite what Apollo’s initial looks would suggest, the story is about the new-DC versions of them.
WildC.A.T.s [#7/#8 + #12] (2023) An AU Midnighter from a different Earth, and a cameo of Midnighter prime in the last issue.
DC's 'Twas the Mite Before Christmas (2023) Background cameo of Apollo and Midnighter at a party in the “It's a Bunkerful Life” story.
Cameos and AUs
Futures End #1 Stormwatch (minus Apollo) is also shown, as pics in the background while main character speaks, in issue #4. Also included as bodies in #7/#9.
Flashpoint #5 (2011) Background cameo of both Wildstorm and DC Authority.
Convergence #7 Apollo and Engineer saved by Superman, only one scene.
DC Sneak Peek: Justice League United Apollo in the background (not worth the hassle to find the copy).
Grayson [#1/#7 + #13/#14 + #18] Midnighter’s cameos.
Batman & Robin Eternal #23/26 Midnighter’s cameos.
Nightwing: Rebirth Midnighter’s cameo.
Deathstroke #6 (2012) Midnighter’s cameo in a flashback.
I, vampire #13 A flashback for events happened in issue #12.
Grifter #16 Background flashback cameo as Grifter thinks back on his recent life.
Voodooo #5 Stormwatch only shown as background characters in one panel.
The Wild Storm Angela Spica stars since issue #1. Jenny is on the cover of #3. Shen is included from #8. Jack before #17. Apollo & Midnighter are first seen in #17. The Authority characters meet in issue #19. I haven’t gotten my hands on the older issues but the series is one big plot with characters specific arcs, so the best would be start reading from issue #1.
Love Is Love (2016) MIdnighter and Apollo appear in their Wildstorm, original looks in a one-page story in which Midnighter is taking out his rage for the shooting. Apollo (with Midnighter in the background) also cameos in another story set at the Pulse, where he orders tequila for him and Midnigher, who’s waiting for him on the dancefloor. Anthology released by various artists in conjunction with DC and IDW comics for charity, profits devolved to the Orlando Shooting survivors.
Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special (2022) The story, “Requiem” features the whole team in the Wildstorm original formation, lead by Jenny Sparks. She’s the main character of the story, but it’s a good throwback to the first series of the Authority. In the story “Better Days”, focused on Mr. Majestic, we get a long flasback with Midnighter and Jenny Sparks. There’s other stories, in this collection, featuring the New-52/DC version of the Authority - see above - and also a story set after Warwold - see below.
DC vs. Vampires: All-Out War (2022) One the main characters of this is Midnighter. Apollo, Jack Hawksmoor and Jenny Spark (with a cammeo of Swift) are only featured in a side story. Their presence (and looks) suggest the Wildstom version.
Future State timeline/version
Future State: Superman, Worlds of War Midnighter from the Future State timeline.
Action Comics [#1029/#1034] Midnighter’s story continues in his own past, where he lives with Apollo.
Midnighter 2021 Annual Midnighter’s story concludes.
Warworld storyline (should be Earth Prime but I don’t understand Superman continuity. Whatever. I’m only trying to read Midnighter’s and Apollo’s stories anyway.)
Superman and the Authority Midnighter & Apollo are introduced together in issue #2.
Superman/Batman: The Authority Special Takes places after page #14 of Action Comics but it’s a stand-alone story.
Action Comics [#1035/#1046] Continues from Superman and the Authority miniseries. Never a joy for the lovebirdies(of prey). [this long arch is getting harder and painful to read: Apollo is mostly absent and it’s heavily Superman-centric (no surprise) so every other character gets a very side-character treatment. The miniseries was more balanced on this]
Superman: Warworld Apocalypse Finale to the Warworld story line started in Superman and the Authority. Finally the birdies are reunited. Only PTB know when we’ll see them again. :(
Action Comics [#1046/#1048] Follow up of Warworld Apocalypse. The team returns to Earth Prime.
Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special (2022) The story “Together” is a direct follow up of Action Comics #1046/1048. Apollo and Midnighter are back on Earth, but Apollo is having issues adjusting. The story ends saying it continues in Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #6 but in that series neither Apollo or Midnighter show up. There’s other stories, in this collection, featuring both the Wildstorm and the new-52 versions of the Authority - see above.
DC Pride (2023) They are the main characters in the “Anniversary” story. The timeline/setting of this is a bit odd. They are in their Wildstorm looks (Apollo has long white hair and wears his original costume) and they’re also married (they have never been married since the New 52 debut), but there’s a reference to their time with Superman, making the story set after the Warworld storyline.
Jenny Sparks (2024) (Flashbacks and mentions of things happened in the Wildstorm run. But it’s set in the DC universe) (#1 released so far: Unknown if any other Authority members will show up)

Ok, so, let me recap
Angel/Warren is no more. He’s now a new, poor excuse of a winged man
Angel/Psylocke relationship is a painful memory
Johnny Storm is... well, Fantastic Four title has been cancelled so...
Apollo/Midnighter... gone, Middy is a single gay man apparently and, according to Midnighter solo title, Apollo won’t be part of his life in the future
Apollo is... somewhere where forgotten characters end up
Cable/Deadpool have stopped be a team long ago...
LET’S NOT TALK ABOUT SASUKE, OK??? LET’S NOT FUCKING TALK ABOUT HIM!!
Ok, what else? Kill me Zoro? Fuck up Jim Kirk in ST XIII? Come on, I already know that there’ll be a shitty characterization for Warren/Angel in X-Men: Apocalypse coming next year, so I’m basically now clinging to Pine’s James Kirk and Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool, both out next year, but I’m loosing my hope now...
I so, so looked forward the Midnighter solo title. I didn’t expect Apollo to drop by - as I didn’t in the Wildstorm Midnighter solo title - but... to enstabilish that he and Apollo are no more an item... Damn it! It’s like when Marvel pushed Cyclops into Emma Frost’s arms! Or, you know, worst, because part of Midnighter IS his love for Apollo, while Cyclops could.. well, be a (not a favorite of mine) X-Men even when Jean wasn’t around or they weren’t a couple. Midnighter pretty much don’t exist without Apollo in his life! Grrrrrr.
*feeling very, very, depressed*
