I took part of a free afternoon and visited Arlington National Cemetery. My grandmother’s brother is buried there, and I felt like I needed to see that. Also, former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is interred there as well.

Major Archibald Willingham Butt's cenotaph in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington D.C. (A cenotaph is an empty grave.) Archie was a military aide and friend to both President Teddy Roosevelt and President William Howard Taft. He was returning on Titanic to the United States from a recommended vacation in Europe. He personally picked out this spot atop a hill, which is gorgeous. It took me and my family a while to find it though! There are several memorials to Archie around Washington DC if you know where to look!
Also in Arlington is a recent memorial stone to the crew of the USS Thresher. This was one of two nuclear submarines Dr. Robert Ballard was searching for at the same time he discovered the Titanic. (His search for the Titanic was used as a cover story, since the submarines are located around the same area as the Titanic wreck site.) Also in the cemetery is the grave of President Taft and Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr (who was a Supreme Court Justice who presided over IMM's petition for limited liability after the Titanic disaster versus two passenger claimants who were against it).

The Norman Rockwell of American Cemeteries?
There’s been quite a debate recently about Donald Trump’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery. Some folks argue that Trump had every right to pay his respects, especially since he was invited by the families of fallen soldiers. But others are deeply upset, citing violations of long-standing norms and rules. Arlington is often considered America’s most sacred shrine, designed to represent all Americans by laying to rest those who have served our nation with dignity and honor.
Why do these rules about political activities at Arlington exist in the first place? Are they still relevant today? And does the approval from Gold Star families give a political figure the right to bend these regulations? Let’s discuss: How should we balance the honor of the fallen with political freedoms? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Heartfelt Memorial Day Speech

Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery is always a poignant event, and this year was no exception. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III delivered a heartfelt speech honoring the bravery and sacrifices of fallen soldiers. His remarks highlighted the significance of Memorial Day and shared personal stories of heroism and loss.
The Significance of Memorial Day
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a time to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. This day reflects on the immense sacrifices made to protect American freedoms and values. It is a day of remembrance, gratitude, and national unity. General John A. Logan established the first official Memorial Day in 1868 to honor Civil War soldiers. Today, it has evolved to recognize all American military personnel who died in any conflict. The observance of Memorial Day promotes a sense of national unity and reconciliation, reinforcing the values of liberty, equality, and justice.
Honoring the Fallen: Secretary Austin's Speech
At the National Memorial Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery, Secretary Austin paid tribute to the fallen heroes. He began by acknowledging distinguished guests, service members, veterans, and Gold Star families, expressing shared sorrow and respect for those who mourn a fallen hero every day, not just on Memorial Day. "Every Memorial Day, I remember those who gave all in the defense of our country, including the battle buddies who served and fought alongside me," Secretary Austin shared, reflecting on his four decades of service in the U.S. Army. He highlighted the story of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Stevon Booker, a tank commander who was one of the first Americans killed in the Iraq War. Sergeant Booker's bravery and dedication were exemplified by his actions during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. His unit came under heavy fire, and he protected his teammates by returning fire from an exposed position on his tank turret. For his heroism, the Army named its newest armored combat vehicle the M10 Booker, in honor of both Staff Sergeant Booker and Private Robert Booker, another distinguished hero from World War II. The Cost of Freedom Secretary Austin emphasized the tremendous cost of freedom, not only in combat but also in the ongoing sacrifices of military families. "Our troops and their families don't just sacrifice during wartime. They endure long deployments, painful absences, and the constant worry that never leaves," he noted. The mental and emotional toll on service members and their families is immense, and the loss extends beyond the battlefield, with many struggling with the aftermath of war, including the tragic issue of veteran suicides. The Role of Military Families Military families play a crucial role in supporting national defense. Blue Star and Gold Star families bear the weight of these sacrifices daily. "America's greatest strategic asset will always be our people," Secretary Austin remarked, underscoring the importance of recognizing and supporting military families' contributions.
A Call to Remember and Act
In closing, Secretary Austin called on all Americans to remember the fallen heroes and to strive to uphold the democracy for which they fought and died. "They did their duty. And we must too," he concluded, introducing President Biden, who also spoke at the event. The Legacy of Memorial Day Memorial Day is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made to protect the nation's freedoms. It serves as an opportunity to reflect on the true cost of liberty and to honor the bravery and dedication of those who have given their lives in service to the United States. The stories shared by Secretary Austin illustrate the profound impact of these sacrifices and the enduring legacy of the fallen heroes. By observing Memorial Day, Americans unite in a collective act of remembrance and gratitude. It is a day to honor the past, acknowledge the present, and commit to the future, ensuring that the sacrifices of the fallen are never forgotten. Final Thoughts The National Memorial Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by American service members. Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III's speech highlighted the importance of remembering and honoring those who have given their lives for the nation. As we reflect on the stories of heroes like Staff Sergeant Stevon Booker, we are reminded of the true meaning of Memorial Day and the enduring legacy of those who have served and sacrificed. Donald Trump Jr. compared his dad to those who lost their lives fighting for our nation, such as those buried in Arlington National Cemetery
Yes, Commander Bones-Spurs (who profits off the presidency by foreign leaders and diplomats staying at his hotel) is just the same as someone who died for our nation.
Remember when the Rightwing was attacking an actual war hero on John Kerry. Not for his testimony but actual fighting in the Vietnam War.
They compared Kerry’s wounds and Purple Hearts to a band aid.

Election Controversy at Arlington National Cemetery: What Are Your Thoughts?
The incident involving Trump's campaign team at Arlington National Cemetery has stirred quite a bit of controversy. Reports of a "physical and verbal" confrontation with Army staff during a photo session in a section dedicated to fallen troops have people talking. Despite federal law prohibiting political activities and photography at the cemetery, Trump's team allegedly pushed and verbally abused a staffer who tried to enforce these rules.
Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper and the Veterans of Foreign Wars have criticized the incident, with Esper calling for an investigation. What are your thoughts on political activities and photography at such sacred sites? Is it respectful to honor fallen troops, or does it cross a line into inappropriate territory? Let’s discuss!

First solo exhibit launched at IHCC! It was a lot of work. My husband, mother, and all three kids helped to make it happen along with co-gallery coordinator Alexis Clements. Thank you! Spent much of the week attending the RNL National Conference. Flashback to pre-pandemic conferences: big hotel w/other events and their audiences, eating meals in hallways, big name speakers crafting their message to be useful for your industry, attractions in-hotel and immediately off-property, and predictable refreshment breaks. I was fortunate to be selected to speak, which was very exciting and rewarding, and for that I’m grateful. But nothing was recorded, so once again we are back to picking one topic from 14 good ones four times a day for 2+ days with nothing other than presentation materials to learn from the other sessions. A cost issue, I suspect, but I would hope conferences of the future leverage pandemic lessons where we gained so much more having access to video archives of all sessions. I was also able to visit my parents’ headstone at the Arlington National Cemetery, an inadvertent gift of the conference. And Sunday being spent in the company of Army friends since 1979, a rich opportunity I could not pass up. All-in-all a marvelous excursion on many levels. . . . #rnlnc2022 #maryland #washingtondc #summer #arlingtonnationalcemetery #friends #sun #speaking #airtravel (at Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgHjnNqOJwL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
