🫀 Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Closure in India: Procedure, Recovery & Cost
An Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) is one of the most common congenital heart defects affecting both infants and adults. It occurs when a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the heart’s upper chambers (atria) fails to close naturally after birth. This abnormal opening allows oxygen-rich blood from the left atrium to mix with oxygen-poor blood in the right atrium—placing an extra burden on the heart and lungs.
India has emerged as a top destination for ASD Closure, offering world-class cardiac care at a fraction of the global cost. With experienced cardiologists, cutting-edge technologies, and internationally accredited hospitals, ASD Closure in India ensures high success rates and fast recovery.
Tumblr media
👨‍⚕️ Who Needs ASD Closure?
Not all ASDs require treatment. However, moderate to large defects—especially those greater than 8 mm—often require catheter-based or surgical closure. Patients who may benefit from an ASD closure include:
✅ Individuals with shortness of breath, fatigue, or frequent lung infections ✅ Patients showing signs of right-sided heart enlargement or failure ✅ Those experiencing arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) ✅ Individuals at risk of stroke due to paradoxical embolism ✅ Children whose defects do not close naturally by early childhood
🛠️ Types of ASD Repairs
Depending on the size, location, and severity of the defect, doctors recommend either of the two main types of ASD closure procedures:
1. 💉 Catheter-Based Closure (Minimally Invasive)
Performed by inserting a catheter through the groin vein to the heart.
A closure device (usually umbrella-shaped) is deployed to seal the defect.
Suitable for secundum-type ASDs (most common form).
Minimal hospital stay and quick recovery.
2. 🏥 Surgical Closure (Open-Heart Surgery)
Recommended for complex ASDs (primum, sinus venosus types).
Surgeon uses sutures or synthetic/pericardial patch under general anesthesia.
Involves open-heart surgery and 5–7 days of hospitalization.
Both methods offer excellent long-term outcomes, with catheter-based closures being less invasive and associated with faster recovery.
🧪 Pre-Surgery Evaluation & Diagnostics
To determine the right approach, a thorough cardiac evaluation is conducted using:
🔍 Echocardiography (2D/3D/TEE) 🫁 Chest X-ray & Pulmonary Function Tests 📈 ECG & Cardiac MRI/CT Scan 🧬 Blood Tests & Coagulation Profile 📍 Cardiac Catheterization
This helps the cardiologist assess the type, size, and complications associated with the defect.
⚙️ ASD Closure Procedure Overview
📍 Catheter-Based Closure
Performed under local or general anesthesia
Catheter inserted through femoral vein
Closure device deployed and position confirmed via imaging
Takes 1–2 hours
Discharge in 24–48 hours
🧵 Surgical Closure
Done under general anesthesia
Involves a chest incision (sternotomy) and heart-lung machine
The hole is closed with stitches or a patch
Hospital stay: 5–7 days
Recovery time: 4–6 weeks
⚠️ Risks and Possible Complications
Although rare, ASD closure can involve some risks:
Catheter-Based Risks:
❌ Device dislodgement ❌ Residual leak ❌ Arrhythmias ❌ Infection at catheter site
Surgical Risks:
❌ Wound infection or bleeding ❌ Irregular heartbeat ❌ Rare risk of stroke ❌ Reaction to anesthesia
That said, both procedures carry low complication rates when performed in experienced Indian hospitals.
🏥 What to Expect After ASD Closure?
After Catheter-Based Closure:
✅ Bed rest for a few hours ✅ Return home within 1–2 days ✅ Avoid heavy exercise for 1–2 weeks ✅ Medications: Antiplatelet agents like aspirin or clopidogrel ✅ Follow-up with echocardiography
After Surgical Closure:
✅ ICU stay: 1–2 days ✅ Full recovery: 4–6 weeks ✅ Cardiac rehab & wound care ✅ Periodic check-ups for rhythm abnormalities
📊 Long-Term Care After ASD Closure
Ongoing care includes:
🩸 Blood thinners for several months 🦷 Antibiotics before dental procedures (if prescribed) 📋 Periodic ECGs and echocardiograms 🏃‍♂️ Return to normal activity after doctor’s clearance
Most children can return to full physical activity, and adults can enjoy improved heart function and quality of life.
✅ Success Rate of ASD Closure in India
India is known globally for its high success rates in cardiac procedures:
🔹 Catheter-Based Closure – Success rate over 98% 🔹 Surgical Repair – Success rate over 95%
Indian hospitals have state-of-the-art hybrid cath labs, real-time 3D imaging, and multidisciplinary pediatric and adult cardiology teams.
💰 Cost of ASD Closure in India
The cost of ASD closure in India can vary significantly based on several factors, including the type of procedure, the hospital's location, and the experience of the medical team. On average, the total cost may range from USD 5,000 to USD 6,500 or more, depending on whether the treatment is conducted through catheter-based methods or open-heart surgery. Additionally, expenses such as pre-operative tests, hospital stays, and medications can contribute to the overall price.
🌍 Why Choose India for ASD Closure?

Complications of Untreated Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
Tumblr media
An untreated Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) can lead to serious complications over time. These may include:
Heart Failure: The heart can become overworked and weak.
Arrhythmias: Irregular heartbeats are common.
Stroke: Blood clots can pass through the ASD and reach the brain.
Pulmonary Hypertension: Increased blood flow to the lungs can raise blood pressure in the lung arteries.
Eisenmenger Syndrome: Severe pulmonary hypertension leading to cyanosis (bluish skin due to lack of oxygen).
If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with an ASD, consult with Dr. Md. Farhan Shikoh, MBBS, MD (Medicine), DM (Cardiology) for expert advice and treatment options.

Test to confirm Heart Problems in Babies During Pregnancy!
Have you ever been told that there are “holes” in your baby’s heart during a pregnancy scan?👶💔
Let me explain what this means. In medical terms, these are often referred to as “ventricular septal defects” (VSDs) or “atrial septal defects” (ASDs). If you are worried, don’t panic! Although it may sound scary, many of these tiny holes close up on their own before birth or shortly after. However, it’s important to monitor them closely with regular check-ups.🩺🔍
The diagnosis of these conditions usually involves a detailed ultrasound scan, followed by fetal echocardiography to examine the heart’s structure more closely.🏥💊
The treatment varies depending on the severity and size of the defect. Some cases might require medication, while others might need surgical intervention after birth. But with proper care and monitoring, many babies born with these conditions grow up to lead happy, healthy lives.👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

The shop is officially closed for made to order items until November, I will be open for RTS items only in a couple weeks. The exact date to reopen for made to order items is to be determined because we got a call yesterday from Jaiyana's cardiologist with a date for surgery. October 26th her 3rd open heart surgery will take place. I was expecting it to be early October, but that wasn't the case. She also needs to get lab work done ASAP in order to begin her EPO injections before surgery. She's not going to be happy about that, to stay the least. I will be spending all of September sewing all open orders, and spending October with Jaiyana and the rest of my kids and hubby. Thank you for following, liking, and commenting, and purchasing from my little shop., and for following Jaiyana's heart journey. 💙❤️ • • • • • • #chd #chdwarrior #zipperclub #zipperclubmember #tricuspidatresia #ventricularseptaldefect #atrialseptaldefect #heartbaby #heartmom

“My daughter had suffered from severe fever. We consulted a local doctor and he referred us to a heart specialist at Hanamkonda since she had an irregular heartbeat. The doctor suggested getting an ECG and Echocardiography. After diagnostic results, they identified the hole in the heart which had to be operated on. Our relatives suggested we seek medical help from Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad and we approached Dr. P.V. Naresh. After the test results, he advised undergoing surgery. Considering my daughter’s age, the doctor performed a Minimally Invasive Surgery. She has recovered after the treatment. We are very thankful for the doctors, nursing staff, and management for providing the best treatment” - said Mrs. Urmila

Background story
August 1, 2013: I had open heart surgery to repair an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), a condition I was born with. The doctors didn't find it until 19 years later. I was 19 years old when I had the surgery, and had just finished my freshman year of college at a University a state away. The procedure was 5 hours long, and I was hooked to a bypass machine for the duration of the surgery.
A year ago, I was prescribed Alzheimer's medicine at 20 years old, due to the significant memory loss from the procedure. My neurologist told me it was due to the fact that I was on bypass for 5 hours, which affected the blood flow to my brain.
I have never met anyone suffering from my condition, and certainly not as young as I. I've been told that memory loss of my kind usually happens in older patients, and that the youngest person to show early symptoms of Alzheimer's was 27. I am starting this blog to record my memories, to track memory progress/decline, and to share my story for whoever is interested.
