This save is for the lore lovers and casual players who might be bored of the same starter homes and venues.

The dense forest loomed around Stanley and his team as they ventured into uncharted territory. Stanley gestured for them to stay low in their respective positions, and crouched behind a bush.

You, on the other hand, were following right behind Stanley. 

You were nervous. After all, this was your first mission. The first mission after much training with Stanley and his team.

The weight of the responsibility hung in the air, a palpable tension that tightened their chest.

“Enemies 350 feet ahead. Permission to shoot if enemies retaliate.” The transmitter whispered, and Stanley immediately got into position, including you. You locked and loaded your gun, and prepared your heart for combat. 

“Weapons in sight.” 

Snipers in hand, you look into the distance. 

“Run!” 

Until a grenade was sent your way. 

Without another moment of hesitation, Stanley grabbed your arm and shielded you in his arms, before both of you dived for safety. 

BOOM! 

You had no time to process your near death, nor the fact you were being held in his arms, because the next moment, Stanley was already attacking.

“Enemy is retaliating! Fire!” Stanley throws his own grenade, and immediately pulls out a pistol. 

“Enemy attack!” 

KABOOM!

And you watch as people fall.

Your brain went on auto-pilot. When you think back, you’re glad it did, because it saved your life. 

Holding your pistol in hand, you followed Stanley’s lead, though you were sloppy in comparison.

“Y/N! Stay behind.” Stanley pulls you aside and hides behind a tree as the enemy soldier fires at it. 

“Stay down. It’s an order.” 

“But I-” 

A body falls down from a tree, with a face you easily recognize. 

“Dan down, Dan down!” You wanted to rush over and check on him, but Stanley stopped you and shook his head. 

“But he’s-” Another bullet shot through Dan’s head. 

In that moment, you freeze as his dead body falls to the ground. 

“Fuck, how many more enemies?!” Stanley curses, and even turns around to shoot the enemy himself. 

“Two at the perimeter, but we got it under control. Others are coming in with the support team.” The transmitter announces, before static, and then a relieved voice. 

“Mission complete.” Even though their mission was complete, and enemies were eliminated, Stanley’s solemn expression didn’t change. 

“Report any casualties and treat the wounded.” When he finished, he saw you rushing to Dan despite heavy steps. 

“Dan? Are you really…” Stanley watches as his team gathers around you and Dan, and tears slowly roll down your dirtied cheeks. 

“Commander Stanley, leave it to us.” The support team arrives and Stanley heaves out a sigh of relief. Stanley gave a nod, and watched as another team member pulled you away from Dan’s corpse. 

“Is Dan really-” 

“He’s dead.” The support team states sadly, but they do their job regardless. Stanley walks up to Dan’s body and salutes. 

Immediately, you and the team followed suit.

“Dan Smith died honourably in battle. He will be remembered.” Stanley nods towards the staff, before he turns to the team. 

“Good work today, we will return to base and rest for the rest of the day. Dismissed.” 

“Y/N. You coming?” Just as everyone else was leaving, you stayed in the same position where you saluted Dan. 

“I’ll be there in a bit.” You weakly state, and your colleagues understandably leave you, giving you space. 

You took a deep breath, but the air smelled like metal and of death. 

Your hands were still trembling and the gloves were stained with Dan’s blood. 

Why weren’t you more skilled?

Why were you so scared after so much training and simulation tests?

Why were you so useless?

Why were you even part of this team!? 

“Y/N. Let’s go.” 

“O-Okay.” But you couldn’t move. 

“Y/N.” 

Everywhere you look, you see traces of the battle, and a reminder that you will be seeing this scene often. 

Can you really see people die in front of you? Were they not human just like you? 

When people die, you all bleed red. 

You still remember Dan’s little encouragement and his little food sneak-ins. His smile when he talks about returning home to see his wife and his newborn child. His happy tears when he would finally be going home to see his mother, who was previously bedridden from illness. 

A father, a husband, a son, and more. 

Now he’s gone.

Nausea hits you like a train, and the world suddenly spins. You feel the urge to vomit even though you couldn’t breathe.

"Easy," Two strong arms catch your wobbly body, and you shrink in his hold. Through your blurred vision, you barely figure out your commander, his usual stoic demeanor softening as he guides you to sit on the ground. 

“Breathe, follow my lead.” You did, listening to him count and his instructions to breathe and exhale. 

"This might be your first mission, but it won't be your last. Remember, every soldier faces these moments." He spoke with the wisdom of someone who had seen the harshness of the world before. 

Stanley steadied you with a firm yet comforting grip on your shoulders. 

“Can you stand?” Stanley asked, but you shook your head. He stands conflicted, before his hands digs into his pockets and pulls out a cigarette. 

“Can you smoke?” You stare, before laughing at how awkward Stanley was.

Man just offered you a cigarette, right after you had a panic attack. Who does that? 

Only this nicotine addict. 

Stanley let you laugh, his own lips curling into a smirk, before you finally accepted his offer.

“Thanks.” 

You take a smoke, and you cough briefly from the initial taste. But soon you relax, feeling the trembling subside ever so slightly. You finally pushed yourself up, and took a deep breath.

“Stan.” Stanley looks at you, waiting for you to speak up. 

“Like you said, there will be more missions like these.” In your peripheral vision, you see the red contrasting the vast greenery. 

“It’s dangerous…and I’m sure you know very well.” He nods, before pulling the cigarette out of his lips. 

“Can you promise me that you won’t die?” You stand there and wait for him to blow out the fumes.

Just imagining your commander, who seems cold and aloof, but actually secretly caring and loyal, dead on the ground like this made you tear up slightly. 

But you refuse to shed tears, because you already know his answer. 

He turns to face you, and with a fist above his heart, he smirks. 

“I can.”

And you didn't expect anything less.

Comic Log: March Reads

Stuff I read in March (minus things w/ existing or forthcoming effortposts, as usual).

Do a Powerbomb by Daniel Warren Johnson: A young wrestler gets the invite of the lifetime - get to the top of the heap in an otherdimensional tournament and resurrect her mother, a pro wrestler who died on stage years ago during an accident. But to succeed, she'll have to tag team with the man who fumbled the move that killed her all those years ago.

As I mentioned on my main blog, this is a very fun action series that I found pretty thematically played out and a little rushed in its pacing. Still definitely worth a read to get a sense of a rising talent, and I am interested in seeing where DWJ's work goes from here.

Doctor Strange by Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo: Doctor Strange without his full magical repertoire - relying more on magic tools than spells - and having to pay up for a history of extensive arcane overuse.

I like the interpretation of Strange as a supernatural physician burdened by the uncognizable, as well as the cosmic-horror angle. "The Empirikul" is the kind of ridiculous concept that I love in comics. And I always enjoy Bachalo's art style. But despite those positives it left me a little cold: Strange seemed to have been reinterpreted as Tony Stark meets John Constantine, Bachalo's depiction of Crazy Magic Stuff got repetitive as it went on, and it's all in service of very unexciting character dynamics. I had no idea that Wong has basically exited from being a primary supporting character for Dr. Strange since this series.

All-New Ghost Rider by Felipe Smith: After being gunned down by a paramilitary, Robbie Reyes has to navigate school, auto shop work, taking care of his disabled little brother Gabe, and exacting vengeance as the serial-killer-possessed Ghost Rider.

Genuinely revolting, extremely racist particularly against Latinos/Chicanos, visually hideous - I respect Tradd Moore as an artist but his style simply did not work for this book, and his character art outside of the titular character's transformed state was bad to look at, uncomfortably elongated and cartoony for an ostensibly dark book. Every time little brother Gabe ate ice cream I legitimately felt sick to my stomach. However, Moore is definitely the superior creative partner here - based on how reliant on stereotypes this story is, Smith strikes me as a complete hack and I'm shocked he got the gig.

Doom Patrol by Gerard Way: The Doom Patrol are drawn back together in response to various corporate bodies trying to profit off their existence, centering around Casey Brinke, a fictional creation of classic Patrol character Danny the Street.

I like the first volume well enough. Way's approach is very obviously influenced by the metafiction of Morrison and Pollack - most notably in that it brings back most of Morrison's breakout characters - but barring some inspired moments, it's a much less subtle work, and is far more intensely a "comic about comics" in a way I find overbearing and less interesting. (One of the antagonists is literally a sanitizing corporation called “Retconn.”) However this literalization is compatible with the expressive cartooniness and thick lines of Nick Derington's art - which is why I think the run suffers when Derington is less of a presence in the "Milk Wars" crossover and the "Weight of the Worlds" miniseries. It's got its charm and I love the lesbian baby-making stuff (albeit not its lack of real resolution).

Power Man and Iron Fist by David Walker and Sanford Greene: The reunion of Luke Cage, now a devoted family man, and his best friend Iron Fist, who he is slightly embarrassed by. The two of them get embroiled in various gang wars and mystical hijinks as they try to uncover who's been getting ex-cons wrongfully locked up.

I adore Greene’s art and this is a creative team that collaborates often - I will have to check out Bitter Root. The series draws upon blaxploitation and adapts it to be tasteful without being totally neutered. My main issue is that it was cut short very abruptly; it really deserved a longer ongoing. This is predominantly a Luke Cage book but I’m kind of an Iron Fist hater so I’m okay with that, and there were actually some pretty great Danny Rand moments throughout. The series weathers the storm of Civil War II reasonably well - though Captain Marvel and her allies come out of it looking pretty awful - as well as Brian Michael Bendis independently throwing a wrench into the plot by temporarily estranging Luke and Jessica Jones. But it definitely feels like it starts very strongly and then had to wrap up quickly.

Far Sector by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell: A Lantern with a unique ring sent to act as diplomat and power-balance for a Dyson swarm populated by three very distinct species, investigating the first murder to take place there in five centuries.

The science-fiction and noir-conspiracy elements of this story are really fun, I think there were some really creative ideas, especially in the setting and worldbuilding. Protagonist Jo Mullein's backstory - inspired to make a difference after 9/11, she joins the army and wages war in Afghanistan (she explicitly mentions Kandahar) and then later joins the NY Police Department, where she witnesses her partner do a police brutality and then gets fired for being tagged in a Black Lives Matter post - was made in a lab to annoy me. Hard to fully recommend because for every aspect I like there's another I found rather grating, like the bad politics or the constant (plot-critical!) references to memes.

Iron Man by Kieron Gillen: Iron Man takes leave of his company and, after cracking down on an assortment of different criminal groups making use of the Extremis virus, heads into space where he tries to take down a lifelong alien conspiracy to mold him into a weapon, making use of a new modular armor designed to adapt to different situations.

Shockingly, the section where Greg Land is the predominant artistic contributor is the better half (though credit is due to Planet Hulk artist Carlo Pagulayan for a lot of the cool designs). Unfortunately I think the last eleven issues - say it with me now - spin their wheels and then end, despite introducing a few different fun concepts (that ultimately do not pan out). Iron Man has no business getting into a dust-up with the dark elf Maliketh. But the first seventeen issues are very strong and work well as their own story - it's a continuation of the character work from Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man but has its own distinct "knightly" spin on the character. And I really liked the "modular armor" gimmick, it made for a lot of fun surprises and twists.

Curiously most of firearm stuff in the game files (like sticker textures) are in german(?) mixed with some english terms.

HOMELAND SECURITY SNIPER RIFLE (CA8-2)

Pretty much a military large cal sniper rifle from RRC, according to the textures;

In the game files is stated as "SNIPERRIFLE" and "CONNORSNIPERRIFLE". Basically no variation;

It's stated is a 12.7mm anti-material large caliber, possibly 12.7x99mm (.50 BMG);

According to the game files it's inspired in the H&K CA8-2 or SL8, probably a "futuristic" version mixed with other tactical sniper rifles;

SCHMOT BENDER rifle scope according to the textures, probably a reference to Schmidt & Bender. There's a "Onrara 50'S /30.24™" next to it, maybe it's a name? Who knows;

Likely adaptable and interchangeable parts: barrel, scope, stock, bipod;

HOMELAND SECURITY ASSAULT RIFLE (CZ1010)

In the game files is a stated as "M4SWATRIFLE";

The stock feels inspired in SCAR H but the overall rifle seems like an futuristic AR-15 style rifle mix or CZ BREN;

.45 cal || I couldn't find this specific cal for a "M4" which is usually 5.56 NATO but i did find .458 SOCOM and .450 Bushmaster;

The textures point out for 2 possible manifactures: "Voge Force Log Ltd" or "GOCISSELE AUTOSTARS";

All SWAT, Riot and CL guards use this shit - def generic;

Futuristic holographic sight, likely with target locking;

SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL (AZPR40 SZ)

According to the textures is a generic semi-auto from KAISAN-Phoenix;

Found 3 variations in the game files "COPGUN", "COPGUNB" and "TODDGUN";

.457 cal (it's an airgun cal irl), likely to be .40S&W according to the textures but should be .45 ACP;

Looks heavely inspired in the Smith & Wesson M&P45 full size with a different grip although it's .40 written;

PISTOL (MS853 BLACK HAWK)

In the game files is stated as "DANIELGUN" (ta~daaa);

Stated as .355 cal, basically a 9mm (by Jonbal Ammunition in this case);

It's the only time we see this pistol being used in the game;

No idea which irl pistol they exactly used as inspiration cuz feels like a mix of guns like Sokolovsky;

HANK'S REVOLVER (357 MAGNUM)

I couldn't identify the manufacturer, i only know about this eagle stamp;

In the game files is named as "HANKGUN" (taa~daaaaa);

.357 Magnum cal;

Could be inspired in a Ruger GP100 or maybe S&W 686? Idk, looks like a 6" barrel with polymer pistol grip;

The round headstamp normal map in the game files states "P635AC .40 RWS" or the inverse (why everything is .40 in this shit);

PUMP ACTION SHOTGUN (????)

In the game files is named as "FUNFAIRSHOTGUN" and "SHOTGUN";

Probably a generic 12 gauge;

There's a deleted variation (Hunter one) from the deleted section of Pirate's Cove (last img). Got the exact same stock and pistol grip from the CZ1010;

I honestly can't pinpoint what real life gun they used as inspiration, maybe an oversized Remington 870 Marine Mag with some modifications (shorter barrel for example)? Who knows;

ROCKET LAUNCHER (RPG-7)

In the game files name is "ROCKETLAUNCHER";

Pretty straightforward RPG-7. Classic. 😁🥃

But before we get to what's in this warehouse, who is the owner of this place that aforementioned keeps it under lock and key — at first, it was simply just one owner however now that's officially changed to TWO owners. Mikasa Ackerman and her wife Historia Reiss.

A former Eldian soldier and the former Eldian Queen, Mikasa's reasoning for doing this is kept completely 100% ambigious but how did Historia get dragged into this?
