The sudden opening of my overhead hatch by remote access wakes me from my slumber. He’s coming. My pilot. There must be a situation. If it were anything else the hatch would have been opened manually, and if it were any other pilot it would be the lower hatch, not the one above my cockpit. He swings down from the end of his chute, his boots hit the checker plate of my cockpit floor and he reaches up to close the hatch. There is an automated close control, so he doesn’t have to do it by hand, but it is quicker and much more satisfying when he does. The solid thunk as it shuts both feels and sounds more secure, more reassuring than the slow, quiet, automatic closure. And it signals the unofficial beginning of our next adventure together. He smiles every time he pulls the hatch closed – there is a certain excitement in the urgency of a launch. Someone needs us, and we have to fly.
My pilot is unique. No one else treats me the way he does, or understands me like he does. He knows me better than any other human, more intimately than even the creator himself. The creator is the one responsible for my original design and build, but I suspect my pilot may have had a little input. He has certainly had a creative hand in upgrades and repairs, and prefers to do as much hands on maintenance work as he can, often working alongside the creator and his robotic assistant when he can’t complete the work on his own. The creator may well know every nut and bolt and wiring loom, every function and capability to the letter of the specifications, but my pilot knows I am more than a marvellous piece of engineering.
He knows me in the air – how I will respond to any weather conditions, any sudden changes, and every little twitch of my controls. My pilot knows my limits in practice, not just on paper and by the numbers. He will push me when it’s needed and knows when I have given all I can. We have nursed each other home battle-scarred and wounded on many an occasion. He will apologise whenever my abilities are stretched beyond capacity, whenever there is damage, and every time he needs to pull me apart for repairs. I don’t need the apologies. He takes care of me, and I will do my best to take care of him.
My pilot feels affection for me. He shows it in so many little ways, like the absent minded way he’ll trail his hand along the surface of my hull as he passes, or contentedly hum along with the rumble of my engines. It’s evident in the way he speaks to me. Barely audible whispers of greeting, or thanks for a job well done. Impassioned pleas to give just a little more in desperate times, often followed by relieved words of thanks accompanied by a loving rub of my dash, or forehead resting against a bulkhead with a relieved sigh once the crisis is over. He speaks to me in words of encouragement and praise. He believes in me and relies on me, and in return I will give him everything he asks of me. For him I will push my limits to do what he needs me to do, to get us all home safe.
He calls me beautiful. I know that I am not, but it is good to hear him say it. Strong and dependable I may be, but not beautiful – except perhaps in his eyes. I am not sleek and shiny like my sister ‘birds One and Three. Nor am I built for speed like them, but I am proud of my capabilities. Still one of the fastest machines in the air despite my grand size and considerable weight, I am versatile and able to carry just about any cargo imaginable. Sometimes I wish I could be faster, but I know that some things are more important. Without me it would be impossible to get specialised heavy equipment to where it is needed, my medical bay is the best equipped and largest in International Rescue’s fleet, and I am capable of carrying a large number of people to safety. If I were to fail in my duties it would make the job of my pilot and his colleagues immeasurably difficult. So, I must not fail.
He sings to me. When he’s working on repairs or maintenance, when he’s tidying the cockpit or restocking the medical supplies, or sometimes, when we’re flying alone. His voice resonates through my systems and reflects off my surfaces and harmonises with my own sounds. I like when he sings. He seems to do it when he’s happy, comfortable – content. None of the others ever sing to me. The Co-pilot – the one who belongs to Four – he sings sometimes, but it’s not the same. He seems to sing as a distraction, to change the prevailing mood in the cockpit, or just for his own entertainment. His singing is loud and raucous, but not necessarily bad.
Others have flown me when my pilot has been unable to. It is never the same. The Commander, One’s pilot, is always trying to rush me, wanting me to be something I am not. He is impatient with me and grumbles that I am not fast enough. He gets frustrated if I do not respond immediately to the slightest adjustment of my controls, and yet he will often take an extra fraction of a second to find the switch or lever he needs because he is used to flying a different ‘bird. I understand his sense of urgency, but flying for him is sometimes hard work, as though he is fighting me instead of working with me.
The Co-pilot, Four’s pilot is better. Four and I are like the closest of sisters in many ways. We are often called to work together as I am able to carry her to locations she cannot reach fast enough alone. As a result her pilot and mine work together often, and he gets to see first hand how my pilot handles my controls. When he is required to take over piloting duties he emulates what he has seen my pilot do, right down to voicing encouraging words when needed. He is a good pilot, but he lacks a little confidence in himself, as though he is afraid of doing something wrong and causing damage to another’s ‘bird. He means well and he is trying to connect with me on some level, but it is not the same as the partnership I have with my pilot.
The little one, Three’s pilot is somewhere in between those two. He has that nervousness about him, the fear of making a mistake flying a ‘bird that’s not his, and he seems to have a desire to prove himself so he’ll try and do things his way instead of feeling and listening to what I need. At the same time he is inclined to want to rush and expect me to respond more like One or Three instead of doing things my way, but he seems more comfortable adjusting his piloting style than the Commander is.
The other – the Voice from the stars – only really flies me remotely. I have no tangible connection with him. Remote piloting is clinical, calculated, precise and impersonal. He does not communicate directly with me through voice or touch, only electronics. He relies on numbers and sensor readings rather than human senses like my pilot does. I know it is necessary at times for this intangible Voice to take control this way, but it is a lonely way to fly.
My pilot’s strong hands are gentle, nimble and sure in their movements across my controls as he completes pre-flight procedures. The module we need for the job has been selected, loaded and secured into place – part of me, but not. The modules, the pods, the machines and equipment I carry are perhaps like accessories or clothing for a human – it is possible to fly without them, but they are still a part of my complete work-ready attire.
The hangar door is opening and we are rolling. My pilot gently caresses a hand across my dash and quietly utters “Here we go, girl.” The launch pad tilts and the countdown begins. I am a Thunderbird, and my engines rumble into a roar. I bring the thunder, and with my pilot, together we ride the lightning.

You’re in yet another elevator room, having just explored the first part of Greed. As Sisyphus told you and you’ve expected, the Layer looks nothing like Dante's haunting yet beautiful description; the only thing that was Inferno-related were the boulders, and even then they only dragged those around, and even then they were dead Malicious Faces, really. It just wasn’t the same thing. You start to think you’re in for more artistic disappointment.
You also feel very bitter and very angry; between constant restarts, unfixable injuries and having to re-learn how to use your weapons after accidentally deleting the wrong files, a lot has happened in the last two hours or so, and now you just want to relax.
You're not worried about getting attacked out of nowhere. This isn't the surface, and the elevators are always safezones. Still, you wish you had someone close by, someone to talk to.
You don't want to talk to Sisyphus right now– and you already vowed to yourself to never speak to him ever again. You would let him languish in Heresy for all of time and you would ignore him completely, even if you have nobody else to talk to. Even if you miss him. Even if you really, really want to reply to those little beeps coming from the Terminal.
You're sure he meant it as an observation or even a compliment when he told you he thought you were a person – he simply couldn't be a humanist, it made no sense otherwise. He didn't even have VR in his time –, but at the same time... his words burnt you more than the searing gold of his kingdom. You stood up for yourself, but was it worth it?
You sit down and rest your back against the red and white wall, opening your wings as you do so. What to do, what to do... if the cat was here, she’d surely play with you, and you’d have something to distract your restless hands. They’ve been fidgeting more frequently, ever since you left Limbo. You wonder if you should run a diagnostic, but decide against it. Involuntary movement is a sign of malfunction for a machine, especially one like yourself, but at least it makes you more human. It makes you feel more human. You were making this difficult for yourself.
You’re getting distracted.
You expand your HUD and deactivate your visuals. A black void covers your vision, followed by text.

An ocean of files and folders floods your screen. Seeing all that disorder – all those digital papers stacked together like the real things – calms you somewhat. Your fingers don’t intertwine and squeeze each other as much now.
You wade your way through mp3s, mp4s and even wavs, until something titled “sunglasses” catches your interest. Was that file there before? You decide to check it out.

You’re sitting by a window. The sky outside is golden and blue and pink. It is 05:03:34 and it is summer, June 20th.
The room you’re in is bare. A white floor meets white walls and a white ceiling. The room is bathed in golden light. The lights don’t turn on until 5:15:00, so the only source of light is from that little slice of outside.
Aside from the sky and the sun, you can see a young specimen of Pinus pinea. The branches frame the light.
You stand up and look to see a male Corvus cornix hopping along the grass, looking for food. It picks up something but it soon dismisses it.
You wonder how its blood would feel on your plating while being absorbed. It certainly wouldn’t sustain you, though.
You hear the automatic door opening and sit back down. Senior Researcher Francis Sheeran has entered the room. He’s introducing someone to you.
You turn to meet them, and stay completely still.

A main cable curls inside you. Your primary sensory system sends false positives.
Asimov and his Laws, you remember now. These are all different videos from before. When humans were still around, and your kind still wasn’t quite as spread as it is now. Not now now, but the old now. The one talked about in the many books and movies and songs stored in this very memory bank.
There’s more files. You decide to live them.

You are in Room 030. It is large and featureless, with only a glass panel changing the scenery. The glass panel is obscured like frosted glass. You know they can see you.
“Starting test 1 for the prototype of the bot series V.” an old voice rings out from an intercom. As if on cue, you spread your poliglass wings open.
The voice continues. “In this experiment the prototype’s reflexes will be tested. Prototype is unarmed.”
From the floor itself three purple drones rise up. You put yourself in position. “Testing begins now.” A beep plays and the lights become harsher.
The first Drone gets closer and chirps in question. You zip towards it and grab it by its sides. The two others prepare for a charge but you jump up and ram its companion into one of them and the floor. There’s a dent on it and smoke coming out of the robots, which are now
inert. The final Drone jerks back and you grab it, but it flies up and drags you with it. It’s quite strong despite your difference in size and volume.
Regardless, you ignore its pleas and tear out its back carapace. You twist the circuitry inside it and with a dying trill it drops down like a rock.
You fall on your feet. You slam the geometric corpse into the wall and it’s soon reduced into a heap of scrap.
“Subject’s time is seven seconds flat.” the voice from the intercom states. You are unsatisfied.
You go to the Drones on the ground and pick one up, tearing it in half. It must have a blood bank inside, but you find nothing but batteries, wires and circuit boards.
“Hey, you. Over there.” the voice from the intercom doesn’t like what you’re doing. “You are ordered to stop.” it speaks.
And just like that, you place down the mauled body and stand still again. You fold your wings in.
“We’ve done enough for today.”

You are in Room 030. It is large and featureless, with only a glass panel changing the scenery. The glass panel is obscured like frosted glass. You know they can see you.
There is a human in the middle of the room. He is Junior Researcher Alberto Rossi, thirty-four years of age, blood group AB-. He is wearing a padded suit. It protects its most precious and blood-rich spots.
“Today on November 3rd of 2084 we will perform the first stealth test for the first prototype model of the V series.” an old and raspy voice speaks from the intercom. “Along with the V ‘bot we have Alberto Rossi, who offered to test our machine.”
“The pleasure is all mine!”
“We’re glad it is. Mr. Rossi is wearing full protection and the prototype is unharmed. If the machine cannot find you in 30 seconds it will fail the experiment.”
You open your wings and lower your stance. “We will begin after the beep.”
The same beeping sound from before comes in and the light dissipates. Parts of the floor rise up and form a labyrinth.
You activate your night sensors and stalk the tall hallways. The room is silent, so silent that you can hear your internal fans quietly whirring. You stop them. You can always cool down later.
You hear the trembling breathing of your target. You activate your see-through heat vision and see its shape. It’s just one wall over.
You break the wall open and jump on Rossi's back. The padding tears away like paper as the man is too stunned to fight back. With a precision and swiftness to envy even the most skilled of men, you unlatch his helmet and hit him on the head, again and again. Rossi tries to grab you and screams something, but you're too focused on the act to

The video suddenly cuts off. They must've turned you off remotely. You don't like how the sensation of his flesh caving in, of his blood entering your plating and filling you feels so fresh, as if it all happened just a second ago.
You imagine this is how flashbacks were like for people. There's another audio. With fear in your motor you decide to listen to it.

You are listening to the humans in the hallway outside your holding unit. They do not know you're recording them.
"Fuck, I told you that was a bad idea! Mister Rossi was supposed to be a blacklisted target and now he's in the hospital!”
“He'll be fine.”
“He has a concussion, five stitches and a broken nose.”
“He’s tough! Besides, he can brag about surviving a V model's attack now.”
“Let's just use other robots next time.”
“It’ll just break them. You saw what it did to those Drones, didn't you? I told you and I repeat, if we don't use people...”
They walk too far away to hear any further.

You are greeted with the face of someone you don't recognize.
You aren't curious about this person though, nor scared, nor happy. You can't feel much of anything really. You're just a robot, after all.
You cannot move, as your consciousness has been transferred to a computer for the time being. It's standard procedure. This doesn’t mean you are unable to visually record what surrounds you. You don’t believe he’ll notice you anyway.
The stranger speaks. “Hello, this is Doctor Diego Cimaroli, head researcher of the Fondazione di Ricerca Robotica Italiana, or FRRI. I am here to submit a progress report on our first-ever model of the V line. I’ll call them Vù for convenience.” he says into his phone. “Now, Vù has shown to be quite efficient at its task. It now takes less than five seconds on average to defeat his target!” he smiles. “It mainly uses its Feedbacker arm, but it can make and use improvised weaponry in a pinch. We plan on letting him use guns soon. But also...”
Cimaroli's expression becomes focused. You hear the clicking of keyboards and a click of a mouse.
“Perfetto!” Cimaroli looks satisfied. “I have downloaded a few little language packs. About a hundred, I'd say...” he says all coy. “I'd say it's a nice little gift for a ‘bot as hardworking as you!” he smiles. He pats something offscreen.
“This has been Doctor Diego Cimaroli, and this was progress report number 8! ...Okay, how do I turn this off aga-”

If you had tear ducts and eyeballs, you would have certainly started to cry now. The stuttering of your fans and the low buzz coming from your chassis get the job done.
That was Cimaroli. Ci-ma-ro-li. How long has it been since you last saw him? You couldn't believe your sensors. He was just... there, in your memory banks, flesh and all, and you never thought to check. What else was there?!
V2 and Greed and Sisyphus have to wait for now, there's a lot of catching up you need to do.

It's 14:45 CET and you are outside the facility, in the small park where the Pinus pinea is.
It's not summer anymore, but autumn - or fall, as some of the English and American researchers here call it - , and there are many leaves scattered everywhere. You yourself are hidden in a pile of the little things! Not even your optic is peeking out.
This, of course, is a tactical decision; you are training yourself for stealth attacks, and of course, what better way to learn than to stage something against Cimaroli? Those were all tactical decisions. It's all purely for the art of war, of course.
While you wait for your totally a victim to arrive in your total trap, something tiny and red with black dots passes you by. It takes you a moment to recognize it, but you realize it’s a ladybug! Specifically a Coccinella septempunctata.
You move your optic forward and something horrible happens. The insect opens its wings and flies to you - it’s on your optic, on your optic, on your eye!!
Startled by the sudden change in your visuals you immediately get up and produce a high-pitched scream. Someone takes your hand, it’s Cimaroli!
“Hey hey, it’s okay!” he says, flicking the wretched creature away and letting you see again. “It was a bug, it’s okay!” he laughs and he sounds like rain tapping against a window.
You huff and shake your optic again. You realize the Doctor is right in front of you and you tap them on the shoulder. You emit a little beep.
You have won the ancient game of Hide and Seek!

You are listening to the researchers in the hallway outside your bedroom. They don’t realize you're recording them.
“I can’t believe this!”
“About time those frog-eaters got some sense in their skulls.” someone sighs relieved.
“We’ll still finish with the current project though, right?”
“Eh, yeah! we need to dep- to use the V model on something after all.” a third person speaks.
“That ‘bot will be a gamechanger, I know it. We’re like Oppenheimer with Fat boy and Little Man!”

There’s the sound of shuffling.
“I have this little thing I can put inside you. It’s no bigger than a grain of rice and will go undetected. All of your information and memories will get transferred here as they delete everything from your hard drive. It has a capacity of 400 terabytes, you just have to input a password to access and everything will come back to you– and only YOU will know of it. Don’t tell anyone, alright my dear?”
He chuckles. “Ah, I don’t have to worry about that, do I? If you’ve found this recording it means you are one very good hacker, and got through those barriers that they put you under. Suck it, FRI!” he hams it up. “You can’t sto-”
He coughs again. There’s a painfully long silence. He speaks again but he sounds worried and worse.
“A-Anyway... I’m putting the memory bank inside of you as soon as I’m done with this recording. you're right here next to me, you look so beautiful when you are asleep. Before I go, though, I want to tell you something...”

“Hand me the halfdiamond,” said Ebby.
Nik pulled the pick from the small pouch and handed it to him, “One of these day’s you’re gonna have to show me how you do it.”
“Fat chance,” grunted Ebby, “Damn, didn’t anyone teach these idiots how to oil a lock, I’m surprised this thing hasn’t seized up on them yet.”
“They probably think it’s safer for it to stick a little.”
“Give me a hammer and I’d have this thing off in too whacks, it’s rusted right through I tell ya.”
“Too loud,” sighed Nik, “It’s a nice idea though, I wouldn’t mind taking a hammer or maybe even a torch to this building.”
“We’ll torch them in court once we get those papers. Ahha, got it,” Ebby crackled with glee as the lock popped loose, “Your turn Niki old pal!”
Nik gently pried the front plate off the badge reader and looked at the tangle of wires inside, “Hmmm, I see why they used a physical lock, the print scanner on this thing is fried, anyone with a badge and code could just waltz right in.”
Ebby grinned, “Don’t suppose you have the badge and code do you?”
“Not yet actually, my contact wanted an exorbitant amount for them.” Nik fiddled with the wires, “that ought to work,” they held up a pair of white cards to the reader, “here,” they handed one to Ebby, “should get you through most doors.”
Nik quickly punched in a fake code, “one, two, three, four. Think you can remember that old man?”
Ebby shoved the card in his shirt pocket, “I got your number all right Niki boy, got a cloak for me?”
Nik pulled two lengths of fabric from their backpack, “here ya go, make sure not to stand still for too long or the AI will pick up on it.”
They each ducked under their own cloaks, adjusting them to ensure everything was well hidden.
“Here we go,” Nik opened the door and the two quickly slipped inside.
The hall lights blinked on, “crap,” muttered Ebby.
“Hush, they’re old laser-style motion sensors, if the AI had seen us the alarms would already be blaring, so lets move quick.”
They headed down the hallway past several doors before Nik stopped, “here it is, Security Operations Center. Should be able to get everything we need from here.”
“That looks like a retina scanner,” Ebby said doubtfully.
Nik slowly pried the scanner away from the wall, “I can bypass it, it’s an older model…” they fell silent as they carefully rewired the machines' innards. “Try badging in now.”
The door obediently unlocked as Ebby tapped his badge on the small reader and typed in the simple code.
The security center was lined with several rows of desks and even more rows of clear glass monitors.
“Place is like a ghost town,” Ebby muttered as the automatic light’s switched on, “How’d you get em all out of here at the same time?”
“Corporate Christmas party, just worked a little magic on who was scheduled to go and who wasn’t, simple really.”
“It’s all easy for you ain’t it kid,” Ebby was rifling through paper and checking in unlocked drawers, “you think you got it made. Just don’t go getting too cocky, that’s how you end up with a prison sentence longer than the ride to Pluto.”
“I’m sure you’ll keep me in line ol’ man.” Nick smiled. They had slid into a chair and plugged in a small device to the computer there, “Any luck finding the keys?”
“Starting to wonder if I’ll even need them, don’t think anyone taught these boys basic security,” Ebby strode over and dropped a small sticky note in front of Nik, “I believe you owe me a drink though.”
Nik rolled his eyes at the small piece of paper but diligently typed in the username and password written on it, “I’m in,” they grumbled and unplugged the small machine. “People always take all the fun out of hacking.”
Ebby laughed, “somethings never change. They’ll come up with a way to pull the password straight from your mind and people will still be writing them down and hiding them under keyboards.”
“They could atleast invent an invisibility cloak small enough to hide em with.”
“Sounds like a great idea, just hope it doesn’t fritz out the first time you look at it wrong.”
“They’ve come a long way, heard they’ve deployed some back on Earth that are almost entirely silent.”
Ebby gave a disbelieving grunt and went back to digging through drawers, pulling out his lockpicks as needed.
“Got us registered with the AI, it shouldn’t sound any alarms now,“ Nik shrugged off the static cloak and looked around for any flashing lights.
“Don’t suppose you set the camera’s on a loop to did ya?” Ebby asked.
Nik gave him a withering look and Ebby reluctantly slid down the hood of his cloak.
“You can never be too careful, alright.”
“How about you let me do my job and you do your’s, unless you’ve already found those keys?”
“Bah, they’ll be in the last drawer I open, that’s how that always works.”
The two worked in silence for several minutes, interrupted only by Nik’s occasional curses as the computer failed to let them into one program or another.
“Got em,” Ebby said, dusting off his knees as he stood up, “I’m getting too old for this sort of thing.”
“Find us another job as good as this and you’ll have enough money to retire.”
Ebby chuckled, “it’ll be here sooner than you think, Nik. Ready to go get those papers?”
“I’m elevating the access for that badge, tap it here,” Nik motioned to a small card reader, “alright you should be good to go.”
“You’re not coming along?”
“Shouldn’t need me and I’d like to take a poke around their datacenter.”
“Be careful.”
“You too ol’ man, remember these papers aren’t worth getting killed over.”
Ebby nodded and slipped back under his static cloak before heading out into the hall. Once Nik had confirmed that no alarms were going to go off they headed over to the one other door in the room.
“Hello, Beautiful,” they said as they badged in and opened the heavy steel door. Heat and noise blasted forth from the cluttered room, “Oh…, Well that explains the slow connections.” The room was filled with two rows of ceiling height metal server racks connected by a jungle of cables and cords.
Nik pulled out their laptop and stepped gingerly through the mess of wires, pausing occasionally to plug a tiny device into an open port.
“Ahah, now you might have something useful,” Nik followed the cables from one server until they found an empty line and plugged it into their laptop, “username and password? Let’s just pretend I’m the admin why don’t we? And we’re in, really, it’s too easy.”
Nik tapped away at the keyboard for several minutes, mumbling to themselves about poor security practices. “It really isn’t my fault they just left the back door wide open is it? Ooo, what’s this file? Oh.”
Nik sat down hard on the ground.
The door to the security room clicked shut, “You almost done in there?” called Ebby, he poked his head into the server room, “you alright Nik? Look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Fine,” Nik stuttered, “just found some real interesting data.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, I’ll, um, show you later, Eb.”
Ebby eyed him curiously, “How much longer you need?”
Nik nodded, “ I just gotta get this stuff downloaded, should only take a few minutes. You go ahead though, I’ll meet you at the usual spot.”
“We’ve done a lot of good work together, yeah Nik?”
Nik hummed their agreement.
“Well I’ll see ya in a bit yeah?” Ebby hesistated, “Don’t wait to long, Nik, I’ve got a bad feeling.”
“Me too.”
Nik slammed the laptop shut and shoved it into their bag as soon as they heard the security center door close.
“What’s your game ol’man?” they muttered to themselves as they weaved back out through the jungle of cables. They gave a cursory glance at the security monitors to make sure that the coast was clear and then strode out into the hall.
Nik, stopped. The exit at the end of the hall was open, and just on the other side, lit by the wavering light of a streetlamp was the slumped over body of Ebby. “Shit”
The light outside shifted.
A shiver ran up Nik’s spine as the gentle click of the door closing was drowned out by the loud thud of heavy machinery. Their eyes darted around the hall, trying to make out the slight shimmer in the air made by the invisibility suit.
“Stay calm,” they muttered to themselves, trying to fight down the urge to turn and run, “you need a plan.”
There was a loud click, as of a gun loading.
Nik dove back into the security room just in time to avoid the gunfire. They shoved one of the light weight desks against the door.
“Shit, think, Ebby told you all about these damn machines.”
Nik looked hopelessly around the room for anything of use. The machine thudded slowly down the hall.
“What was it he always said about the older machines? You could hear them coming a mile away? Great yeah, well I figured that out on my own.”
Nik backed away from the door till they reached the datacenter. They grabbed the handle and cursed as it sparked. “These guys are gonna fry their machines.” Nik stared at the handle, tentatively reaching out to touch it again, this time without the spark.
A loud thud outside the door was all the urging Nik needed to put their half formed plan into action. As their pursuer tried to bash open the locked door Nik yanked a pair of cables haphazardly out of servers and drug them out into the security center. Nik held their breath, the suit whirred and clicked as it looked around the room.
“Think you can hide?” said a distorted voice, “think you can outrun me?”
There was a thud as the suit stepped inside the room. Nik glanced over at the gray wall panel by the door.
“If you come out now I’ll make your death quick, just like I did for your partner.”
There was a crash as a desk was lifted up and tossed across the room.
“I gotta say you got balls, trying to steal from Starline, I respect that, I really do.”
Nik scrambled out of the way as one of the desks came crashing down on their hiding spot. They could see the wavering light of the invisibility suit only a few yards away.
“Ah there you are”
They carefully stood, their legs shaking, “Why'd you kill the ol’man? It was a good setup. A fake heist. Starline gets the reward for catching another hacker. Somehow I don’t think getting murdered is part of the deal that ol’ Ebenezer struck.”
The disembodied voice laughed, “He said you were smart. But thats the problem with you smart types, always get too cocky for your own good. You’re so easy to fool.”
Nick tried to put desks between them and the machine, slowly inching back towards the door.
“You see I figure that catching both of you will be worth twice the reward. If he'd of had half the brains you do he’d of seen that and backed out on the whole heist.”
Nick bumped into the wall, their hand flung out to a small panel and popped it open. There was a click as the machine's gun reloaded.
“You see the problem with you smart types is sometimes you're too smart for your own good”
Nick flung open the breaker box and flipped the switches, power crackled through the cables and arced up along the invisibility suit lighting it up in a flash of blinding light.
There was a loud pop as the fuses blew and then silence fell on the now dark room. Nik blinked away the after image.
“You forget that older models of invisibility suits were terribly unreliable. Turns out they’re incredibly difficult to insulate against electricity.”
